‘Oh dear, Paul’ – Scholes slammed by fans for Casemiro praise after admitting he is ‘surprised’ by Man Utd new boy

FANS slammed Paul Scholes after he admitted his “surprise” at Casemiro’s quality.Manchester United signed the 30-year-old Brazilian from Real Madrid this summer in a transfer worth up to £70million.

He has just one start for the Red Devils, the 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad.
But Scholes is already impressed by what the midfielder can offer as he initially doubted the five-time Champions League winner and 63-cap international.
Speaking ahead of United’s 2-0 Europa League win at FC Sheriff, in which Casemiro came on at half-time, Scholes said: “He’s surprised me a little bit with his forward passing, his range of passing.
“I thought he was more of a winner, getting the ball in midfield [and] passing to Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

“I think he will, eventually, with the quality he’s got, work his way into the team.”
But dozens of BT Sport viewers at home were shocked at the Old Trafford legend’s comments – suggesting his knowledge about football outside of England was rather limited.
One said: “Again I love Scholesy but this just proves most English pundits don’t watch European football.”
Another added: “Scholes thought that Casemiro was just a destroyer like Joey Barton.”

A third commented: “Tell me you don’t watch LaLiga without telling me you don’t watch LaLiga.”
One replied: “How these pundits are allowed to get away with watching zero European football and not even know how a five-time Champions League winner plays is embarrassing.”
And a final user simply wrote: “Oh dear, Paul.”
Casemiro will be hopeful of breaking into Erik ten Hag’s starting XI for United next’s game, the derby against Manchester City on October 2 after the Leeds clash was postponed.
He and his wife Anna have moved from the Lowry Hotel into a new home – and the Red Devils ace revealed he already feels settled in the North West.
Casemiro said: “I’m someone who likes to stay at home and relax with my family, I’m doing really well and am very happy to be here.
“It’s great, really good, a really friendly club where I’ve been made to feel comfortable from the first day.

Man Utd verdict: Erik ten Hag now knows his best XI and it’s bad news for Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of Manchester derby

ERIK TEN HAG now has 17 days to pick his team for the Manchester derby. The Red Devils breezed past Sheriff Tiraspol 2-0 in the Europa League on Thursday night.
Ten Hag appears to have found his best XI after five wins from six matchesCredit: PA
With their Premier League clash against Leeds postponed, this was United’s final match before the international break.
And Ten Hag chose to revert back to the side which beat Arsenal – albeit with Cristiano Ronaldo in for the injured Marcus Rashford.
And it is a team which seems to be forming a superb understanding… Ronaldo aside.
David de Gea is a certainty in between the sticks.

Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez look rock solid at the back, with the latter beginning to show off his brilliant range of passing.
Diogo Dalot and Tyrell Malacia look equally aggressive defensively and sufficiently creative going forward.
Scott McTominay is keeping five-time Champions League winner Casemiro out of the team and will be expected to start in the derby despite the ex-Real Madrid man’s experience on the biggest stages of all.
Christian Eriksen has been United’s standout player in recent weeks, with his effortless range of passing a highlight of the Ten Hag regime so far.

Bruno Fernandes remains a little underwhelming, but is offering glimpses of the form he showed during his first 12 months at Old Trafford.
And Jadon Sancho and Antony are providing the energy, pace and excitement on the flanks that has made United a force in world football over the years.
The only quandary for the Dutch boss ahead of the Manchester derby is whether or not to bring Rashford back in for Ronaldo.
The obvious choice, given Ten Hag’s thinking so far, is to do so, assuming teh born-again England ace is fit.
Ronaldo may have tucked away his first goal of the season from the penalty spot against Sheriff, but he looks well off the pace.
His inability to stretch the play like Rashford – something Ten Hag seems to depend on – would be forgivable if he was looking his potent best in front of goal, but right now he is not.
As a result, the side Ten Hag will choose to put out for the trip to the Etihad in two weeks looks set in stone.
Expected XI vs Man City: De Gea; Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Malacia; McTominay, Eriksen, Fernandes; Antony, Rashford, Sancho.
It is one which has already impressed in the Premier League and seems to need very little tinkering – if any.
SunSport exclusively revealed that the Dutch manager is set to receive £70million to spend in the January transfer window.
But given how his side are currently applying themselves, it is difficult to see where he would want to strengthen.

He made five changes before the defeat to Real Sociedad – a stark warning that moving things around can create instability.
Expect him to revert to type for the trip to the Etihad – with Ronaldo, Casemiro and Co benched once more. More

Man Utd ratings: Cristiano Ronaldo struggles again despite first goal of the season as Eriksen shines in Sheriff victory

MANCHESTER UNITED eased past Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol 2-0 to kickstart their Europa League campaign.Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo both struck first-half goals in a comfortable victory away from home for Erik ten Hag’s men.

Christian Eriksen fed a lovely pass into Sancho in the 17th minute and the ex-Borussia Dortmund man fired a low strike into the bottom corner to give the visitors the lead.
And Ronaldo doubled their advantage from the spot shortly before the break after Diogo Dalot was brought down in the box.
The win gives United their first win in the Europa League this season following the 1-0 defeat by Real Sociedad last week.
Here is how SunSport’s Dylan Terry saw the performances of Man Utd’s players in Moldova.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
    DAVID DE GEA – 6/10
Was left unsighted by Sheriff’s snap shot in the first half and will have been relieved to see it whistle past his right-hand post.
Did all the basics as expected on a routine night for the Spaniard.
    DIOGO DALOT – 6
Dalot has been praised for having already improved a great deal under Ten Hag.
May have won the pen but struggled with both his passing and crossing in the first half, but got to grips with the game as it wore on.
Drilled a brilliant low cross in for Fernandes who was denied by the feet of Maksym Koval.
    RAPHAEL VARANE – 6
A commanding presence at the heart of United’s backline, Varane is developing an impressive relationship with Lisandro Martinez.
Never looks out of position or in any real trouble.
    LISANDRO MARTINEZ – 7
Martinez produced some inch-perfect long passes for Ronaldo which were not capitalised on.
His distribution is a great addition to this United side. He also looked untroubled when his physicality was called upon.
Moves seamlessly into midfield and acts as another creative player when United are in possession.
    TYRELL MALACIA – 6
Didn’t put a foot wrong defensively. Always took up the right position when Sheriff came forward.
Also linked up well with Sancho down the left, before showing his versatility in the final 20 minutes by switching to right-back.
    SCOTT McTOMINAY – 7
Making it incredibly difficult to see how Casemiro gets in the team at this moment in time.
Regained and retained possession superbly for Ten Hag’s men. Clearly forming a superb partnership with Eriksen in the middle of the park.

    CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN – 8
Delightful reverse pass into Sancho for the opening goal.
Eriksen is making this United team tick, acting as the link between McTominay and the front four.
Looks to be the classiest operator in Ten Hag’s team. Currently an undroppable talisman at the heart of everything for United.
    BRUNO FERNANDES – 6
Played a great pass which led to Dalot being brought down for the penalty.
Drifted in and out of the game, but definitely gives United a balanced midfield when playing in a trio alongside McTominay and Eriksen.
Denied by Koval in the second period after crisply striking a Dalot cross.
    ANTONY – 6
A couple of fancy tricks aside, he was incredibly quiet in the first half as Sancho saw much more of the ball on the other flank.
Did not impact the game how he would have liked, but did still cause one or two problems when he got his defender one on one.
    CRISTIANO RONALDO – 4
Ronaldo’s little flicks and deft touches were not coming off in the first half as he dropped deep to get more involved in the match.
He also missed a good opportunity, rashly rifling over from inside the penalty area after being found in behind the Sheriff defence.
Dispatched the spot kick down the middle, but still looks well off it.
Ronaldo struggled to have any real impact on the game aside from the penaltyCredit: AFP
    JADON SANCHO – 7
Having been left out of the England squad earlier in the day, Sancho responded with an accomplished finish just 17 minutes into the game.
Came within a whisker of a second before half-time but for a fantastic goal line clearance.
Sancho wore a shin pad given to him by a young fan earlier in the weekCredit: Reuters
    SUBSTITUTES
    CASEMIRO (FOR McTOMINAY, 46) – 6
Kept the ball well as United dictated the tempo of the game in a professional manner.
Didn’t clearly improve the side when replacing McTominay, though, and may still have to settle for a place on the bench after the international break.
    LUKE SHAW (FOR DALOT, 70) – 6
Malacia moved over to the right as Shaw replaced Dalot. Didn’t put a foot wrong but is expected to remain Ten Hag’s second choice left-back.
    ANTHONY ELANGA (FOR RONALDO, 81) – 6
Showed his pace with a couple of dangerous bursts down the left.
Ultimately had very little time to impact the match with the result already effectively decided.
    HARRY MAGUIRE (FOR MARTINEZ, 90) – N/A
    ALEJANDRO GARNACHO (FOR ANTONY, 90) – N/A
Unusued subs: Heaton, Vitek, Lindelof, Fred, Iqbal, McNeill. More

Sheriff Tiraspol 0 Man Utd 2: Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo seal vital Europa League win to move second in group

CRISTIANO RONALDO might be on the last lap of a glorious career but the appreciation for him has not dimmed. In this footballing outpost of Chisinau he was the star attraction once again.

After scoring from the penalty spot in the 39th minute for Manchester United’s second the whole ground seemed to shout out his trademark ‘Siu’ celebration as he jumps to the sky arms outstretched.
Seeing Ronaldo scoring a goal is still something special for those who don’t get to see him live – even if they are viewing it through a camera phone, even if it is a penalty.
They don’t come along that often nowadays.
That was his first goal for United in 455 minutes going back to the 3-0 victory over Brentford last May.

The penalty was awarded after a foul by Patrick Kpozo on Diogo Dalot who had got forward on one of his rampaging runs from full-back.
There was no question who was taking it as soon as the referee pointed to the spot.
The shot was drilled down the middle of the goal with venom – ‘Viva Ronaldo’.
That doubled United’s lead after Jadon Sancho had shaken off his England disappointment from earlier in the day with the opener.

He was ignored once again by Gareth Southgate who named his squad for the up and coming Nations League games against Italy and Germany with Sancho’s names once again absent.
He has not appeared for England since a World Cup qualifier against Andorra in October of last year.
Yet while his form in his first season with United did not warrant a call, Erik ten Hag has got him ticking again.
Can Southgate ignore him if he continues this form between now and when he names his final squad for the World Cup in the second week in November?
This was his third goal in six appearances after also netting in the 2-1 win against Liverpool and grabbing the only goal of the game away to Leicester.
The winger is not just scoring but linking well with his team-mates as was shown in the build-up.

Cutting into a central position he exchanged passes with Bruno Fernandes before laying it back to Christian Eriksen.
The Dane has been sensational for United since those opening two league defeats, dictating play.
Eriksen’s chipped return ball was perfect for Sancho, but he still had much to do, and did it.
Controlling the ball with his right he then flicked it onto his left and shot low back across the goalkeeper and into the far bottom corner.
Sancho celebrated by lifting up the personalised shin pads given to him by a young United fan recently after he had stopped his car to sign an autograph.
He very nearly had the chance to repeat the celebration when found by Eriksen again but this time his shot was cleared off the line by Stjepan Radeljic.
After United’s surprise defeat at home by Real Sociedad in their opening Group E game this was then back on course.
Ten Hag had made plenty of changes for that game one of which saw Ronaldo return in Marcus Rashford’s absence.
With Sunday’s league game against Leeds postponed this was his chance to play his strongest side but Rashford remains sidelined with a muscle injury so Ronaldo was in.
After a spirited opening from the Moldovan champions, United just took control of this game.
    And Ronaldo looked interested again.
    Shouting, cajoling, pointing.
Clapping his hands to tell teammates to sharpen up if he sensed a dip.
His pace is not what it was and two through balls that would have resulted in goals in the past did not.
Then again, a chase of what looked like a lost cause – when those little short steps went into overdrive in the second-half – and he got a ball across goal brought applause from the home fans.
He would also be found back on the edge of his box heading the ball clear when FC Sheriff threatened.
When he was subbed with ten minutes to go he was applauded by all sides, a Portuguese flag amongst one section of the home fans was waved.
They were just happy to have him here, to say I saw Ronaldo live.
His return to United has not been the dream end for him, but can it still be?
Of course, playing at the 10,500 capacity Zimbru Stadium in the Europa League is not what he envisaged just over a year ago.
Playing second fiddle to Rashford when fit is something he may have to get used to.
As he crossed the pitch to go down the tunnel at the end of the game he was greeted with cheers.

A young fan who ran on to get a selfie was intercepted. Ronaldo gave him a pat on the cheek.

The Portuguese forward, 37, converted from the penalty spot as Manchester United took on FC Sheriff in Moldova.
Not only was that his first goal of the season – but it was also his first goal in the Europa League.
That means he has surpassed fellow GOAT Messi’s grand total of zero in the B-list Uefa club competition.
And Ronaldo supporters on Twitter enjoyed the gentle ribbing at Messi’s expense to laud the Red Devils legend.

One joked: “Goal scored in Europa League [or Uefa Cup] since it was founded in 1971: Cristiano Ronaldo: 1, Messi: 0. This is why Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest player of all time.”
Another quipped: “Ronaldo with his first ever Europa League goal. I’d bet that Messi will never be able to catch up to him in that category.”

Of course, Messi has no Europa League goals because he has never featured in it.
Barcelona were an ever-present in the Champions League during his time in the first team at the Nou Camp and has continued in the elite club tournament with PSG.
Ronaldo, however, was forced to settle with Europa League action after United finished sixth last season and he failed to secure a summer transfer away – but will push again in January for an exit.
The United star also boasts the most Champions League goals of anyone – with his tally of 140 currently 14 better than Messi.
However, the Argentine has a whole season to try and cut that gap down.
And he made a start with his finish to equalise against Maccabi Haifa last night.
That goal ensured Messi broke a different Ronaldo record with the Israeli side the 39th different Champions League opposition the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has scored against. More

Former Dortmund ace Sancho was perfectly picked out by Christian Eriksen on the edge of the area.
He jinked past one defender before then placing the ball in the bottom corner.
However, it was his actions after the goal that got supporters talking on social media.
As his teammates came to congratulate him, Sancho reached down to pull out one of his shin pads.

He was handed a start in last week’s Europa League opener against Real Sociedad, but he was unable to stop his side from slipping to a 1-0 defeat.
But Fernando Santos, who named him in his latest Portugal squad this afternoon, has revealed that his star man will be playing for United today in their Europa League game at Moldovan outfit Sheriff Tiraspol.
He made the claim as he insisted that he had no concerns over Ronaldo’s fitness regarding his lack of match action.
Santos said: “I have no worries, he will play later, he will start against the Sheriff.”

He returned to the starting XI the following week, but he and his teammates were left humiliated as they were thrashed 4-0 at Brentford.

Sheriff looking to lay down law
Not since being eliminated by Viktoria Plzen in Champions League qualifying have Sheriff suffered defeat in any competition.
Since bombing out of Europe’s elite competition, the Moldovan side have won six and drawn two of their eight encounters since.
The Moldovan giants will be looking to continue their fine form this evening.
Chișinău ready for Red Devils’ arrival
The Zimbru Stadium is all kitted out ready for the Europa League game against one of the biggest names in European football.
ten Hag’s star-studded United team will be looking to set the record straight this evening.

    ten Hag lauds United fans
The Man Utd manager has spoken about how great the support is from the United fans.
Following his team to Melbourne, Bangkok and Perth in pre-season they now follow The Red Devils to Moldova.
Tonight’s journey should be given far more credit with it being close to the Ukrainian border in the current climate.
    Dutchman well aware of challenge
The Man Utd manager was asked of his team’s approach tonight following their defeat in their opening group game of the competition:
Pressure is for every game, we have to win every game. When you lose the first game, you have to win the second, so we know what our task is. We always play a strong team, so also tomorrow we will play a strong team.Erik ten HagMan Utd
    Keep the run going
Man Utd have scored in their last 15 European games and have not failed to score on the road since prior to the covid-19 pandemic.
Goals seemed hard to come by at Old Trafford in their last Europa League outing and the Dutch manager will be keen to see his attacking players firing on cylinders again.
The stern defence of Sheriff Tirapsol will ask questions of that record in Moldova tonight.
    The Cristiano Conundrum
For the majority of the transfer window, the incoming signings were overshadowed by their wantaway striker looking to play Champions League football this term.
ten Hag could be seen to slump in his chair, every press conference, as more questions were fielded about the Portuguese striker’s time at Man Utd.
Tonight will offer Ronaldo to show why he is regarded as one of the best strikers in Europe.
Welcome to Sheriff vs Man Utd
Erik ten Hag takes his Man Utd team to Moldova this evening, hoping to get their first win of their Europe League campaign against Sheriff Tiraspol at the Zimbru Stadium.
Having lost their opening group game, losing 1-0 to Real Sociedad at Old Trafford, their hosts tonight ran out convincing 3-0 winners over Omonia Nicosia.
Pressure will be on the United manager to bounce back from the Real Sociedad defeat which ended their run of four consecutive wins, ten Hag will be keen to get his side off to winning ways in Europe this season.
Sheriff have come through their last two fixtures without any fresh injury concerns and only goalkeeper Dumitru Celeadnic should be absent following a positive covid-19 test.
United’s injury concerns are far more complicated with striker Anthony Martial still dealing with an achilles problem.
The Frenchman has been left out alongside Facundo Pellistri, Donny van de Beek, Martin Dubravka, Marcus Rashford, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Brandon Williams.
Luke Shaw’s foot injury has cleared up in time for him to be included in the squad, while Marcus Rashford’s absence should mean Cristiano Ronaldo leading the line for United this evening.
