The incident happened late in the game between Jose Mourinho’s side and the Bulgarian outfit.
As Zalewski marked Verdon at a free-kick, the Roma man lost his footing and fell to the ground.
But as Verdon stepped over him, he stamped down horrifically on Zalewski’s neck.
His studs dug into the Roma man, leaving him in a dazed heap on the floor.

It’s unclear whether it was by accident or on purpose, but Verdon pleaded his innocence after being sent off.
Referee Nikola Dabanovic initially waved play on before being told by VAR to check the pitch side monitor.
He quickly overturned his original decision after seeing the shocking replay and gave Verdon his marching orders.
Fortunately Zalewski, who came on as a sub for ex-Manchester United ace Nemanja Matic, managed to soldier on for the rest of the game.

Mourinho’s side ran out 3-1 winners thanks to two penalties from Lorenzo Pellegrini and a Nicolo Zaniolo strike.
But they were forced to come from behind after Brazilian striker Rick out Ludogorets ahead just before the break.

Arsenal star Kieran Tierney’s shirt is almost ripped clean off by FC Zurich opponent who wasn’t even booked

KIERAN TIERNEY put in an impressive display to seal Arsenal’s passage into the Europa League last 16. And it seems it was so impressive that Zurich star Nikola Boranijasevic even wanted the shirt off of Tierney’s back – literally.

The Scot was left was a massive hole in his shirt after a grapple with Boranijasevic.
However, the 30-year-old Serbian was not even booked for the incident despite Tierney having the proof to back up a claim of shirt pulling.
And fans were quick to make some jokes about the incident.
One user online said: “Tierney was so good tonight they had to rip his shirt.”

A second user quipped: “And his shirt STILL never untucked – class.”
Meanwhile, others questioned the decision from the ref and how they did not conclude a card was an appropriate punishment.
Henry Winter sarcastically tweeted: “Easy to tell that Tierney’s shirt has been pulled as you can see most of his chest.”
A second user said: “How can Tierney be standing there with his shirt ripped wide open and no card.”

Arsenal verdict: Arteta’s Premier League title challenge given HUGE boost thanks to sealing Europa League top spot

SO MUCH for the Thursday/Sunday grind – Arsenal are making it look easy.Well, not as easy as it would be if they could put away more of the chances they create in the Europa League.

Takehiro Tomiyasu’s injury was the only negative noteCredit: Reuters
For Mikel Arteta this was mission accomplished, getting the result his team needed to avoid a play-off tie despite fielding only four of his first 11.
And who knows how important it will be NOT to have two extra games in February, potentially against very high calibre opponents such as Juventus and Barcelona, as the Gunners try to maintain a title challenge?
This being Arsenal, of course they had made it a bit more interesting by losing in Eindhoven a week earlier and so sending Group A into a last-night battle for top spot and automatic qualification for the last 16.
And it took a tight offside call to deny Zurich a second-half equaliser, before some nervous moments in five minutes of stoppage time.

But the Arsenal bandwagon rolls on.
Despite the Swiss side’s limitations, there was plenty to admire.
The way Arsenal are able to produce the required level of performance despite significant changes in personnel suggests Arteta really has bedded in a way of playing and a culture.
Apart from one early deflected effort that had Aaron Ramsdale scrambling a bit to save, the Gunners’ defence kept the visitors at arm’s length in the first half.

In the second they were untroubled until the 68th minute when Ramsdale made a good stop but was arguably lucky to see the follow-up ruled out for offside.
Granit Xhaka was absent through suspension, but Arteta still had enough confidence in Mohamed Elneny and Albert Sambi Lokonga to leave Partey on the bench for more than an hour. And they did not let him down.
Up front, the same lack of clinical finishing and/or final ball that had restricted Arsenal to a 1-0 home win over PSV was apparent. But at least they were causing problems and creating chances, staying true to their front-foot philosophy.
Some home fans – and Gareth Southgate – will have been nervous to see Bukayo Saka come on against such physical opponents after he had left the field injured inside half an hour at the weekend.
But Saka and fellow substitutes Partey and Martin Odegaard came through unscathed – although Takehiro Tomiyasu did have to go off again after replacing Ben White.
That minor worry aside, Arsenal should go into Sunday’s big game at Chelsea with a good level of energy and confidence.

Europe’s second-tier competition seems to have been more of a help than a hindrance to the momentum that the Gunners are building.
Which is another feather in Arteta’s cap. More

Who could Man Utd face in the Europa League knockout round play-off?

MANCHESTER UNITED beat Real Sociedad to qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa League. But the Red Devils failed to win their final group game by two or more goals, meaning they finished Group E in second place.

Because of their second place finish, United will have to wait before playing at the last-16 stage of the competition.
The Red Devils will have to play in the knockout round play-off, which is essentially a new-look round of 32.
In the knockout round play-off, the eight teams who finished second in their Europa League groups will play the eight teams who finished third in their Champions League groups.
And the winners will go on to the Europa League last 16, with the ties to be played over two legs.

Who could Man Utd face in the knockout round play-off?
Let’s just say United’s final result against Sociedad has made things harder for them.
Ten Hag’s men now have the unenviable task of having to play Champions League-quality sides for a place in the last-16 of Europe’s secondary competition.
The eight teams that were knocked out of the Champions League after finishing third were:

    Barcelona
    Ajax
    Sevilla
    Juventus
    Bayer Leverkusen
    RB Salzburg
    Shakhtar Donetsk
    Sporting Lisbon

United will be looking to avoid a tie with Barcelona or Juventus, though the two sides have struggled for form this year.
Ties with both RB Salzburg and Sevilla could also been seen as tricky affairs.
And Ten Hag may even have to see in a reunion with old side Ajax, who were in a group with Liverpool, Napoli and Rangers.
The draw will be held on Monday, November 7.
Ties for the knockout round play-off will take place on February 16 & 23. More

Arsenal 1 FC Zurich 0: Tierney thunderbolt sends Gunners into Europa League last-16 and avoid dreaded play-off

There may be no rest for the wicked but even Jesus doesn’t get a night off at the Emirates these days. Gabriel Jesus might have played in all but one of Arsenal’s games this season but still has to answer the call of duty every three days.

News of the £45million striker’s inclusion in Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up inevitably went down like a s*** sandwich with the Emirates fans who couldn’t understand why he wasn’t being wrapped in cotton wool for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea.
In the absence of captain Martin Odegaard and the suspended Granit Xhaka, at least he got to wear the armband for the first time.
He still wasn’t able to end a goal drought which has now stretched to eight games after starting his Arsenal career like a house on fire.
But he couldn’t be denied the satisfaction of leading his team-mates to the victory which guaranteed top spot in their group.

And more importantly it means they will now sit out the round of 32 when the likes of Barcelona, Juventus, Ajax and Sevilla will be dropping into the competition from the Champions League.
Arteta’s problem is convincing the sceptical supporters that the Europa League is a competition actually worth pursuing while all the talk centres around their surprise title challenge.
So he was  understandably anxious to put this game to bed as quickly as possible so he could sub off his senior stars with Sunday’s game in mind.
He got his wish for an early breakthrough in the 17th minute when Kieran Tierney hammered an unstoppable shot into the far corner from the edge of the area after Fabio Vieira’s initial shot had been charged down.

That was the Scotland star’s first goal of what has so far been a frustrating season, so it was little surprise that he celebrated it like a mad thing.
They should have been further ahead in the 31st minute when Eddie Nketiah was blatantly pulled back by his shirt in the area by Lindrit Kamberi.
But referee Erik Lambrechts did not even refer the incident to VAR before Vieira’s follow-up shot was inadvertently blocked by Jesus in an offside position.
Nketiah had already tested the reflexes of keeper Yanick Brecher with a fierce shot from the edge of the area and was denied again when his powerful near post header drew another sharp save from the Zurich captain.
Considering that their team are currently bottom of the Swiss League and not even good enough to qualify for the Europa Conference League, the visiting supporters were remarkably chipper last night.

Despite his impressive performances it is now eight without a goal for Gabriel JesusCredit: Reuters
A thick smog of blue smoke shrouded the stadium after dozens of blue flares were released from the away end in direct contravention of yesterday’s edict prohibiting the use of pyrotechnics.
But all the fireworks were coming from Arsenal as they pushed on in search of a killer second goal.
It should have arrived two minutes after the half-time break when Tierney’s free-kick dropped to Jesus right in front of goal.
But even though his shot brushed the arm of Brecher it was clearly going well over anyway.
It was to prove his last contribution to a disappointing night for the Brazilian before being replaced by Bukayo Saka for the final half hour.
Yet his departure only seemed to galvanise Zurich, who thought they had levelled in the 67th minute until Adrian Guerrero’s effort was ruled out for offside.

And with news of PSV Eindhoven winning away to Bodo/Glimt, Arsenal’s place at the top of Group A suddenly didn’t look quite so secure.
They just about hung on for the victory but the way Arteta’s weary players are struggling to keep their foot on the gas for 90 minutes suggests that it’s not only Jesus who needs a breather. More

Arsenal player ratings: White enhances England World Cup chances but it’s EIGHT games without scoring for Jesus

ARSENAL won their Europa League group by beating Zurich but their performance was far from convincing.Mikel Arteta named a fairly strong side but the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Fabio Vieira did not hit their usual heights.

Gabriel Jesus’ troubles in front of goal continued – it is now eight games without a goal for the BrazilianCredit: Getty
It is possible fatigue is catching up with the Gunners with this their tenth game since the start of October.
But there were other concerning signs for Arteta as fringe players Albert Sambi Lokonga and Fabio Vieira did not impress.
Kieran Tierney was the matchwinner on his return to the side and he should be fit to play Chelsea on Sunday – a big boost for the Gunners.
And with key players such as Granit Xhaka enjoying a rest tonight and the likes of Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Thomas Partey appearing from the bench, Arsenal should be fresh for their trip to Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Here is how SunSport’s Kealan Hughes rated Arsenal’s display in their final Europa League group game
    Aaron Ramsdale – 6
One smart save to keep out a deflected effort in the first half and showed brilliant reflexes to keep his side ahead midway through the second half.
    Ben White – 8
Was a lot more ambitious supporting the attack than he was against Nottingham Forest and it was his cross that resulted in Tierney’s goal.
He roamed forward on several occasions, with and without the ball and was taken off for the final 20 minutes to rest his legs.

    Rob Holding – 6
Another assured European display from the centre-back who cut out Zurich’s counter-attack all night long.
In truth he had little to do as Arsenal dominated possession for much of the night and the defence was well protected by midfield.
    Gabriel – 6
A quiet night for the Brazilian which he will be grateful for given this was his tenth game in just over a month.
    Kieran Tierney – 8
Returned to the side with a bang as he fired in from 20 yards out to open the scoring with a finish Jesus would be envious of.
Played a lovely ball into Vieira and the midfielder should have buried the chance. He was a little sloppy in possession but that is to be expected as he has not played much recently.
    Mohamed Elneny – 6
Got on the ball time and time again and was effective in playing the holding role despite this being only his second game of the season and first since August.
Taken off on the hour mark with Arteta not wanting to push the Egyptian too much following his injury lay-off.
    Albert Sambi Lokonga – 6
He was okay in Granit Xhaka role as he snuffed out danger and kept possession flowing for his side.
The 23-year-old was tidy if a little unadventurous on the ball and Xhaka’s absence was felt with Arsenal’s midfield rather flat overall.
    Fabio Vieira – 5
The Portuguese had two great opportunities to score in the first half, one was blocked by Jesus and the other was a tame effort blocked by a Zurich defender.
Took up clever positions in the box as usual but snatched at chances all night.
    Reiss Nelson – 5
Played a lovely cute pass to cut open the Zurich backline in the build-up to the opening goal.
But he was wasteful on the ball and did not threaten enough to show why he deserves a place in the side, although the Swiss side sat deep which prevented him from taking on players and causing problems.
    Eddie Nketiah – 7
A constant thorn in the side of Zurich playing down Arsenal’s left flank. He almost got on the scoresheet when his near-post header from a corner was well saved.
Was a little quiet in the second half until he moved centrally, but Arsenal carved out few chances for the striker.
    Gabriel Jesus – 6
Handed the captain’s armband in the absence of Martin Odegaard but his problems in front of goal continued.
He fluffed his lines on several occasions against Nottingham Forest and somehow had an effort from four yards saved when it looked easier to score.
    Subs
    Thomas Partey (for Elneny, 63mins) – 6
Broke up play effectively and was a commanding presence as Arsenal held onto their 1-0 advantage.
    Bukayo Saka (for Jesus, 63mins) – 5
Provided an injection of pace without being able to find a key pass or shot to increase the Arsenal lead.
    Takehiro Tomiyasu (for White, 73mins) – 6
Dealt well with Zurich’s pressure for ten minutes before going off injured.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
    Martin Odegaard (for Vieira, 73mins) – 5
Did not have an effect on the match when he should have put his foot on the ball and tried to dictate play to run the clock down.
    Cedric Soares (for Tomiyasu, 88mins) – 5
Came on for the injured Tomiyasu and helped to see the game out but provided one brilliant cross which Nketiah almost headed in. More

With United needing another goal to qualify top of their Europa League group, Ten Hag turned to the 29-year-old defender.
His thinking was quickly explained when Maguire went and stood up front next to Cristiano Ronaldo.
The defender was put up front in the hope of winning knockdowns from hopeful long balls forward.
But Maguire is unlikely to retain his position, despite Ronaldo’s recent woes, after failing to make the desired impact as a striker.
