Fans convinced Cristiano Ronaldo appealed for OFFSIDE on himself for McTominay’s dramatic Man Utd winner in bizarre move

BAFFLED fans are convinced Cristiano Ronaldo appealed for offside on himself when Scott McTominay grabbed Manchester United’s dramatic winner against Omonia. The Scottish midfielder came off the bench to break the Cypriots’ hearts deep into injury time at Old Trafford.

The 1-0 win bolstered their chances of topping Europa League Group E.
But a hilarious moment seems to show Ronaldo trying to get McTominay’s low finish chalked off.
Jadon Sancho twisted and turned in the box before the ball deflected to the academy graduate, who took a touch before firing past the inspired Francis Uzoho.
Ronaldo was right on the shoulder of the last defender on the six-yard line as the ball flew past him and into the net.

And almost instinctively, the Portuguese superstar – who scored his 700th club goal last weekend – raised his arm and looked towards the assistant referee before he joined in the celebrations.
Ironically, there was not a single appeal from any of the Omonia defenders.
The bizarre move caught the attention of some confused fans on Twitter.
One said: “Did Ronaldo appeal for offside when McTominay scored?”

Another wrote: “Why does Ronaldo always put his hand up for offside when someone scores?”
A third joked: “Ronaldo calling himself offside cause he didn’t score the goal
Another user asked: “Is it me or does Ronaldo ask for offside? What team does he play for?”
And a final one commented: “Nah Ronaldo asking for an offside instead of celebrating the goal is killing me.”
McTominay’s winner was United’s 34th shot of the night as the likes of Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Antony and particularly Marcus Rashford failed to wind a way past Red Devils supporter Uzoho.
The Scot became the first substitute to score in injury time of a European game for the club since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s famous winner in the 1999 Champions League final.

He pulled off an incredible 11 saves to deny the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford as the Cypriot minnows looked set to earn a point against Erik ten Hag’s first-choice stars.
However, he was finally beaten in the dying seconds as sub McTominay secured a 1-0 win for United in the Europa League.

That earned the 25-year-old Scotland international not only a goal bonus but also a little chunk of history.
The midfielder became the first United substitute to score an additional-time winner in a European competition since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s famous Champions League strike at the Nou Camp in 1999.

The Norwegian’s late effort completed a dramatic turnaround against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.
It also ensured Sir Alex Ferguson’s star-studded team claimed an historic treble.
And 23 years later it was McTominay’s turn to be the dramatic late hero – although there was obviously much less on the line yesterday.
But the result does still keep United on course to reach the knockouts.

He did get a Europa League start away at Omonia Nicosia last week, where he contrived to not score despite several chances.
But after coming off the bench for an injured Anthony Martial against Everton a few days earlier, he only needed one opportunity.
Ronaldo hit a wonderful finish past Jordan Pickford to make it 700 club career goals – and even ditched his trademark celebration as he marked the occasion.
It could have been 701 on Thursday night if not for Omonio goalkeeper Francis Uzoho saving from close range as the ex-Real Madrid man looked to pounce on a chance.
It was one of a number of top-level saves from the Nigerian keeper before Scott McTominay rescued the Red Devils with a late goal.

He pulled off an incredible 11 saves to deny the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford as the Cypriot minnows looked set to earn a point.
However, he was finally beaten in the dying seconds as sub Scott McTominay secured a 1-0 win for United in the Europa League.
But it was 23-year-old Nigerian international Uzoho’s display that captured the headlines.
The star grew up a United supporter and his performance was even more remarkable by the fact that he is only Omonia’s second-choice and was only playing due to an injury to Fabiano Freitas.

Scholes, despite the huge fan-fare from everyone else, was less impressed by the stopper’s efforts.
And much like his fellow United legend Keane, he played it a lot more cooler than others and even claimed Uzoho only made ONE important save.
Speaking on BT Sport, he said: “I actually do feel sorry for [Uzoho] a bit.
“Lets have it right, it was the right result. [United were] so dominant in both games really.

“Sloppiness in front of goal though, United have saved themselves some embarrassment there.
“The keeper didn’t make any saves you wouldn’t expect him to make. United’s finishing wasn’t quite there tonight.
“The goalkeeper was good. I don’t think he made saves that were unbelievable. I think it was a mixture of poor finishing as well.
“He was lucky. He saved almost everything. He was great, don’t get me wrong, but he saved everything he should have saved.”
Fans quickly took to Twitter to slam Scholes, with one saying: “Scholes going full on Roy Keane over goalkeepers.”
Another agreed, tweeting: “Scholes channelling his inner Roy Keane!”
A fellow supporter said: “Can’t just give a guy credit playing in the biggest game of his life he saved a lot tonight, better keepers would let one in under that pressure.”
And some United fans were even calling for Erik ten Hag to snap him up, with one writing: “Can we sign this Omonia keeper please?”

West Ham 2 Anderlecht 1: Benrahma and Bowen send Hammers into Europa Conference League knockouts before fan chaos

SAID BENRAHMA and Jarrod Bowen fired West Ham into the knockout stages of the Europa Conference League in a 2-1 win over Anderlecht – before ugly scenes in the stands. The Hammers, last season’s Europa League semi-finalists, ensured a second successive run to the latter stages of continental competition with a fourth win from four Group B matches.

They now need just a point from their last two games, against Danish side Silkeborg and Romania’s FCSB, to ensure they finish top of the group and move straight into the round of 16, avoiding a play-off in February.
But some of the gloss was taken off their achievement by crowd trouble which required riot police to intervene.
The hosts took the lead in the 13th minute when Anderlecht enforcer Amadou Diawara fouled Benrahma on the edge of the box.
Aaron Cresswell had moments earlier curled a free-kick over but this time he stepped over the ball, allowing Benrahma to whip his shot right-footed over the wall and inside the near post.

After half an hour the Hammers had their second, Emerson Palmieri galloping down the left before pulling the ball back for Bowen to finish from 15 yards.
The goal made Bowen West Ham’s joint leading scorer in Europe with six, alongside Johnny Byrne and David Cross.
He should have moved out on his own with seven just moments later when Cresswell cut the ball back, but the England hopeful fluffed his lines.
Anderlecht, whose boisterous fans lit five flares in the way end, one of which landed near the pitch, threatened to spoil the party when Yari Verschaeren drilled narrowly wide and Sebastiano Esposito forced a fingertip save from Alphonse Areola.

But it was largely plain sailing for the hosts and Pablo Fornals, on at the break for Lucas Paqueta, should have hit a third only to see his shot blocked by Diawara on the six-yard line.
Bowen was given a rest after an hour by David Moyes with Gianluca Scamacca sent on, and the Italian almost converted a cross from Fornals while Benrahma put a header narrowly wide from Vladimir Coufal’s centre.
It should have been an ultimately comfortable night for West Ham, although the scenes in the stands were depressingly unpleasant.
A pitch invader briefly halted play to tackle Areola before missiles were hurled between sets of rival fans including another flare which landed in the home end and police officers were injured.
While attentions were focused on the nonsense in the crowd Anderlecht scored a consolation from the penalty spot through Esposito after a foul by Ben Johnson.

Man Utd’s Champions League star Casemiro takes Omonia Nicosia game seriously despite having probably never heard of them

CASEMIRO may have been dumbing down in the second tier of European competition. After all, he arrived at Old Trafford having won the Champions League five times.
Casemiro is proving his worth as Manchester United’s new holding midfielderCredit: Getty
Chances are, given the heights the Brazilian has reached in his career, he hadn’t even heard of a team called Omonia Nicosia – or at least they have never been on his radar.
Yet as he displayed against Neil Lennon’s pesky side, nothing is beneath him when it comes to his job as a holding midfielder.
While those in front of him struggled to break down their Cypriot opponents, the 30-year-old showed exactly why boss Erik ten Hag persuaded Manchester United to pay £70million for his services.
There were those who said he flattered to deceive because he formed the defensive part of a triangle that was completed by Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.

His doubters suggested that he lacked pace and could be caught on the turn.
That, in fact, he would be an accident waiting to happen within the greater intensity of the Premier League.
And so there would have been quite a few saying “told you so” when he got ambushed on the ball by Amadou Onoha before Alex Iwobi opened the scoring for Everton on Sunday night.
Yet he never put a foot wrong after that punishing early moment.

Indeed he grew impressively into the game, showing that he is not only a destroyer but can be dangerous going forward, too.
He should have scored with a diving header then two minutes later caught Iwobi in possession.
His instant through-ball for Cristiano Ronaldo to bag the landmark 700th goal of his career – which turned out to be the winner in United’s 2-1 comeback triumph, was perfectly measured.
Against Omonia, when he did venture forward late in the first half, he accepted a pass from Marcus Rashford, took one step forward, and slammed a shot from 25 yards against the bar.
Soon after he could, and probably should, have scored with a header amidst a ruck of players.
But he was brought in to provide protection for the back four.
And against Omonia, like he also did after that initial mistake on what was his first Premier League start, he showed that he takes his job very seriously indeed.
His calculated caution is starting to bring stability to the central core of Ten Hag’s side.
