Arsenal 1 PSV 0: Gunners seal place in Europa League knockout stages as Xhaka’s winner keeps up 100% group stage record

NUMBER 10 may be a crumbling wreck at the moment but this grand old institution looks in fine fettle.Arsenal were the only Premier League team to win every single game they played during Liz Truss’ swift stint as prime minister.

And unlike the now former PM, who famously disliked North Londoners, they look set for a serious stint at the top.
The Gunners were burning through chances like they were Tory leaders before Granit Xhaka put Mikel Arteta out of his misery and fired them through to the Europa League knockout stages.
The hosts dominated the opening stages but just lacked the final clinical touch.
Kieran Tierney blazed an effort over the bar after a scramble in the box before Xhaka sent one wide after a smart lay-off from Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian striker then had a crack of his own, fizzing a low shot just wide of the near post from the edge of the area.
PSV were being well and truly pegged back but did manage one foray forward. Xavi Simons drove forward down the middle of the pitch but sent his shot just over the bar.
Eindhoven keeper Walter Benitez then had to be alive to tip a deflected Bukayo Saka cross over the bar.
During the next red wave, Ibrahim Sangare tripped Xhaka on the edge of the area, with Fabio Vieira sending the free-kick into the side netting.

It simply wasn’t coming off for Arsenal.
After a frustrating first half, Jesus took up the baton once more shortly after the restart – collecting the ball from Saka before weaving past a couple of blue shirts, though his effort was tame at the end.
PSV offered another warning that they could make Arsenal pay for wasted chances as Simons sent another effort just over Matt Turner’s bar.
Saka then took his turn to pass up a chance, firing straight at the PSV keeper, before Jesus followed up with another limp shot.
Even though this was an early kick-off, starting at 6pm so not to clash with the Prem games, Jesus could have been out there all night long without finding the back of the net.
He wriggled free of the PSV back line well to once again see Benitez get a hand to his left-footed effort.
With Jesus falling short, Eddie Nketiah looked to grasp the moment for himself, collecting a long ball perfectly on his chest, quickly cutting inside but bending his shot just wide of the top corner.
Arteta called for Martin Odegaard and Thomas Partey to try and sharpen the blunt attack, and it didn’t take long for the captain to get things going.

Odegaard fed Takehiro Tomiyasu down the right, whose cross was low to the feet of Xhaka. The midfielder had found space just behind the penalty spot and lashed home a first-time finish on his right foot.
Jesus was hooked shortly after the goal but Saka could have added to the lead when he broke free down the left but fired straight at the keeper.

Arsenal ratings: Jesus shines yet again but Vieira fails to impress as Gunners all but seal Europa League qualification

ARSENAL all but qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League with a 1-0 win over PSV at the Emirates.Granit Xhaka tucked home the only goal of the game with 20 minutes remaining to cap a dominant display from the hosts.

PSV rarely troubled Mikel Arteta’s men, resorting to a containment exercise for much of the 90 minutes.
And, with the Gunners only needing a draw to secure a place in at least the play-off round, Xhaka’s goal gave them the security they needed to see out the game with relative ease.
It is Arsenal’s fourth win from four games in Europe and an eighth in a row in all competitions.
Here is how SunSport’s Dylan Terry saw the performances of the Arsenal players.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
    MATT TURNER – 6/10
Probably felt like he was watching the game in the same way he does from the bench most weeks.
Had one routine shot on target to deal. Will have had a better workout in the warm-up.
    TAKEHIRO TOMIYASU – 8
Never looked troubled defensively throughout the 90 minutes.
Always available on the overlap for Saka which allowed the England man to chop back inside onto his more favoured left and wreak havoc.
Set up the winner by making the run outside and provided the cross for Xhaka to tuck home.
Subbed for White inside the final 15 minutes.
    GABRIEL – 6
Was caught on his heels when Xavi drove forward midway through the first half. The Brazilian centre-half backed off until suddenly he found himself on the edge of his own penalty area. Will have breathed a sigh of relief when the PSV man rifled well over.
Other than that, a routine night’s work.
    ROB HOLDING – 7
Positionally always kept himself in the right place.
Has just 11 minutes of Premier League football in the bank so far this season, but is yet to miss a second of Arsenal’s European campaign.
Could prove to be a key figure in this competition once they reach the latter stages – particularly if Arteta’s men are still going for the title come March/April.
Holding was a calming presence all evening for the Arsenal defenceCredit: EPA
    KIERAN TIERNEY – 8
Celebrated his 100th Arsenal appearance with a stellar performance, linking up superbly with Nketiah down the left-hand side.
Effectively playing as a winger, he blazed a half-decent chance over the bar when the ball dropped to him inside the penalty area.
Delivered a few wicked crosses which were begging to be tapped in.
    GRANIT XHAKA – 8
Produced a bizarrely brilliant flick to Jesus which the Brazilian should have finished off.
When you see how Arsenal line up in the flesh, you appreciate why Xhaka is so important. Quite clearly the link between the back six (including Lokonga) and the front four.
Scored the winner with a smart finish.

    ALBERT SAMBI LOKONGA – 6
Showcased a good range of passing, marshalling the back four and distributing the ball well.
Guilty of a couple of lapses in concentration which led to him getting caught in the middle of the park.
Replaced by Partey midway through the second half.
    BUKAYO SAKA – 8
His first contribution of any note was to fizz in a dangerous cross which eventually reached Tierney, only for the Scot to fire over.
Then sold two PSV defenders down the river with a lovely piece of footwork which captivated the Arsenal crowd.
Did the same again before the break, laying it in for Nketiah whose cross/shot was well cleared away.
Could have put the game to bed late on but fired too close to Benitez from a tight angle.
    FABIO VIEIRA – 5
Had a very, very quiet first 30 minutes but then came alive with a deliciously delicate cross that Jesus was inches away from turning goalwards.
But that was his only real moment of the game. His delivery into the box was a low point of the evening.
Replaced by Odegaard in the 67th minute and looked dejected by his own display.
Vieira failed to take his chance in the starting line-up as he struggled against PSVCredit: Getty
    GABRIEL JESUS – 9
Lively as ever. Linked with the rest of the front four with a classy ease, dropping into pockets of space where no-one was picking him up.
Went closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half with a low shot which rolled just wide of Benitez’s right-hand post. Also had two chances after the break but was forced off balance for both.
His best opportunity came on the hour mark when his low effort was tipped away by Benitez.
Jesus was a constant threat and a nightmare to defend against all evening.
He also put a huge effort in chasing back, often being the one to regain possession for the hosts.
Came off for Martinelli with 15 minutes remaining.
Jesus was Arsenal’s standout player yet again on Thursday nightCredit: Getty
    EDDIE NKETIAH – 8
Incredibly energetic early on. He and Tierney ensured Arsenal started on the front foot as they pinned PSV back on that left side.
Almost scored a breathtaking goal when he took the ball down on the touchline, drove inside and fizzed a venomous effort just wide of the top corner. Would have been special.
Led the line for the final quarter of an hour when Jesus went off.
    SUBSTITUTES
    THOMAS PARTEY (FOR LOKONGA, 67) – 6
    MARTIN ODEGAARD (FOR VIEIRA, 67) – 6
Drove Arsenal on and clipped a couple of cute balls in behind which narrowly missed their desired target.
    GABRIEL MARTINELLI (FOR JESUS, 76) – 7
Forced a good save from Benitez immediately after coming on.
A truly devastating player to bring off the bench when the defenders’ legs are tiring.
    BEN WHITE (FOR TOMIYASU, 76) – 6
Did a solid enough job without ever really catching the eye.
    REISS NELSON (FOR SAKA, 85) – N/A

    ‘Van’ the villain returns
Are we yet to witness another chapter in Van Nistelrooy’s fascinating affiliation with Arsenal?
The Dutchman was branded a villain after seemingly diving after Patrick Vieira looked to kick out at the forward.
His last minute penalty miss then sparked a number of players, led by Martin Keown, to surround the Manchester United man in an infamous brawl.
He recently discussed events that day:
I didn’t react to what happened after the miss because of the incredible dissapointment I felt at not bringing the win for my club.
The pressure was intense for both teams because you are competing for the Premier League and it’s possible it will be decided in those games. It’s 20 years ago now.
It doesn’t define me but coming back to England and to Arsenal, memories come back of my time there and those two infamous games are part of it.Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ajax boss

    Van Nistelrooy expecting hostile reception
Ajax manager Ruud van Nistelrooy faced no side more often than Arsenal during his playing career, making 12 appearances against the North London side.
He scored a whopping 150 goals in five seasons at Manchester United. Yet arguably, he is most famous for a miss.
His last-minute penalty failure against Arsenal in a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford in 2003 led to Arsenal’s invincible season, cementing him in the Gunners’ history books.
When asked about his return to the Emirates earlier in the week, the Dutchman joked: “I expect a warm welcome. I kept them invincible because of my miss.”
The 46-year-old went on to admit that he expects a level of abuse from fans, but believes it is all part of the banter. He said: “I don’t think I will get a good reception but that is good. It is part of the banter of football stadiums.”

    The stage is set
It’s a sunny evening at the Emirates.
It’s been a fortress of victories so far this season. Will Arteta’s men record another win today?
Kick-off is just over an hour away.

    Martinelli on Gunners bench
Gabriel Martinelli is available from the substitutes bench this evening.
Reports emerged concerning his fitness after he missed training yesterday. But his inclusion today suggests the Brazilian’s absence was just precautionary.

Ruud van Nistelrooy names an unchanged 11 from the side that beat Zurich this time last week.

    Jesus starts for Arsenal
Mikel Arteta looks to have opted to a more orthodox 4-4-2 formation for this evening’s contest.
Tomiyasu switches to his favoured right-hand side with Tierney starting on the left.
Saliba makes way for Holding and Vieira gets the nod ahead of Odegaard.
Nketiah is set to lead the line alongside Jesus.
Turner, Tomiyasu, Holding, Gabriel, Tierney, Lokonga, Xhaka, Vieira, Saka, Nketiah, Jesus

    Good afternoon from the Emirates
Hello SunSport family and welcome to coverage of tonight’s Europa League clash between Arsenal and PSV. Two points separate the pair after peeling away from the competition at the top of Group A.
Ruud Van Nistelrooy will hope his return to the Emirates will be a positive one as he looks to put a dent in the Gunners perfect start to their European campaign. However, it won’t be an easy task. Mikel Arteta’s men have won every game here this season. Another one tonight would see them qualify for the group stages with two games to spare.
Meanwhile, Ajax come to North London in rampant form themselves. They are off the back of a 6-1 win over Utrecht leaving them one point off top spot in the Eredivise. A 5-0 Europa League trouncing of Zurich last week will have filled the Dutch side with confidence heading into this one.
Can Van Nistelrooy get his revenge over the Gunners, or will it be Mikel Arteta’s day again in North London?
The action is set to begin at 18:00 and we will bring you all the gossip and team news as we build up to kick-off.

Arteta will be keen to seal top spot in Group A as quickly as possible. Not only would it allow the Gunners boss to rest players for any final group stage games but would see them head straight into the last-16.

And fresh off the back of a 6-1 win at the weekend, Van Nistelrooy has declared his stars can outgun their opponents when the two sides finally meet on Thursday.
But this is partly down to the return of former Tottenham star Noni Madueke.
The English winger has not featured for the Eredivisie title challengers yet this season after suffering an ankle injury in July.
However, he has recovered quicker than expected and could be involved against Arsenal on Thursday.
