Cristiano Ronaldo’s woeful free kick record at international tournaments exposed with Portugal star scoring just ONCE

CRISTIANO RONALDO’S woeful free-kick record at international tournaments has been exposed. The Portugal star failed to hit the target yet again in yesterday’s win over Sloveina as his Euros goal drought rumbled on.Cristiano Ronaldo’s terrible free-kick record at major tournaments has been revealedCredit: AFPHe fluffed three of the set pieces during Portugal’s shootout win over SloveniaCredit: ReutersRonaldo has now gone four games without scoring after his side edged into the quarters with a penalty shootout victory.Earlier in extra time, the legendary striker missed a spot-kick before being left in tears.Ronaldo was even trolled by BBC Sport, who received a telling-off from John Terry, after branding him ‘Misstiano Penaldo’.But Ronaldo’s free-kick technique during the game also left little to be desired.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLHe took three of the set-pieces yesterday but saw his efforts go nowhere near the goal. And it has now transpired that Ronaldo has a dismal record when it comes to free-kicks at major international tournaments. The 39-year-old is currently starring in his SIXTH Euros. While the 2022 World Cup was his fifth appearance at the tournament. Most read in Euro 2024EURO 2024 FREE BETS AND OFFERSDuring those 11 competitions, Ronaldo has taken a grand total of 60 direct free-kicks.However, he has only ever managed to score ONE of those efforts.BBC brutally troll Cristiano Ronaldo live on TV with pun about penalty miss during Portugal’s win over SloveniaRonaldo’s only free-kick success came against Spain in the 2018 World CupCredit: AP:Associated PressEURO 2024 LIVE: KEEP UP TO DATE WITH ALL THE LATEST NEWS FROM GERMANYAnd that leaves him with a dismal success rate of just 1.7 per cent. The one and only time Ronaldo hit the target was at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he netted in the 3-3 group stage draw with Spain. The figure is even more surprising considering Ronaldo has scored 63 free-kicks during his glittering career. He is seventh on the all-time list behind technique kings including Pele, David Beckham and leader Juninho Pernambucano.Ronaldo also trails Messi on the list by just two strikes. And stats show the World Cup winner has a much better success rate at international tournaments, netting five of his 53 direct free-kicks.Indeed, even former England star and Bayern Munich defender Eric Dier boasts as many free-kick goals as Ronaldo.READ MORE SUN STORIESThe centre-back netted one at Euro 2016 in the Three Lions’ 1-1 draw with Russia. But with Ronaldo fighting to see another day after Portugal set up a quarter-final clash with France on Friday, he may get another opportunity to double his tally from outside the box.How Portugal have performed at the Euros with Cristiano RonaldoCRISTIANO RONALDO has been a model of longevity for more than two decades in an outstanding international career.Euro 2004After making his international debut in 2003, Ronaldo’s first Euros came in 2004.Ronaldo marked his Euro debut with a goal in a 2-1 defeat to Greece – his first for Portugal. He scored his second in the semi-final win over the Netherlands, but Portugal met Greece again in the final, losing 1-0 in shock result.Euro 2008Ronaldo was Portugal captain four years later but Euro 2008 was the least impactful tournament he’s had. There was still time for a standout performance, though, as Ronaldo scored once and set up two more in a group-stage win over the Czech Republic.Euro 2012Playing at Real Madrid at the time, Ronaldo was the top goalscorer at Euro 2012, with three goals, including a brace in the group stage against the Netherlands.Portugal’s quarter-final against Czech Republic was heading towards a stalemate with 10 minutes to go and they needed a special moment from him.His powerful header in the dying minutes took Portugal to the semi-finals where they lost on penalties to Spain.Euro 2016Ronaldo scored three goals in Euro 2016, with Portugal crowned CHAMPIONS after defeating France 1-0 in extra time in the final. After suffering an injury inside the opening 16 minutes against France, he was forced to watch from the sidelines.Yet the Portugal captain became a cheerleader, and helped coach his team-mates to the historic victory. He matched Michel Platini’s record of nine goals by the end of Euro 2016.Euro 2020Ronaldo made history again with FIVE goals at Euro 2020, the most of any player at a Euros.Yet it was arguably Portugal’s least exciting affair, as they exited in the Round of 16 following a 1-0 defeat to Belgium. With his goals in this tournament, Ronaldo became the top goalscorer at the European Championship with 14 goals. Should Dream Team Euros gaffers ditch Cristiano Ronaldo after legendary forward’s psychodrama against Slovenia?

Portugal’s round of 16 game against Slovenia quickly turned into ‘The Cristiano Ronaldo Show’ but not in the way the five-time Ballon d’Or would have liked. The 39-year-old happily adopted the the role of the game’s central protagonist on Monday night, a narrative amplified by commentators, pundits and social media users.Ronaldo endured an emotional roller coaster against SloveniaCredit: Dream TeamRonaldo let fly with a whopping eight shots in a barrage that included a succession of direct free-kick attempts of varying quality, accompanied by increasingly dramatic facial expressions.Matjaz Kek’s side defended resolutely but their resistance appeared to be at an end in extra time when Diogo Jota (£4.5m) won a penalty.Ronaldo stepped up and it appeared for all the world that his one-man play would end happily. But Jan Oblak (£3m) had other ideas. The Atletico Madrid stalwart saved the spot-kick, an act that brought Ronaldo to tears on the pitch in a dramatic scene – the BBC’s decision to dub him ‘Misstiano Penaldo’ prompted plenty of backlash.Ronaldo was emotional after his penalty miss in extra timeCredit: PAHowever, there was another twist still to come.Slovenia held firm and took Portugal to a shootout but quickly discovered that Diogo Costa (£4m) was in no mood for fairy tales. The Porto goalkeeper saved all three spot-kicks he faced to send Roberto Martinez’s side through to the quarter-finals.Most read in FootballAnd of course, Ronaldo scored his penalty in the shootout; a precise finish into the bottom corner well out of Oblak’s reach.Portugal will now meet France in the last eight where Real Madrid’s all-time top scorer will come face-to-face with Los Blancos’ newest Galactico, Kylian Mbappe (£7.5m).The whole situation is steeped in narrative but what’s the Dream Team Euros angle?Ronaldo attempted multiple free-kicksCredit: ReutersDespite playing a central role on the night, the fact is Ronaldo added just three points to his tally when all was said and done.Naturally, his returns were severely limited because of his extra-time penalty miss, which resulted in minus three points. And of course, actions that occur during penalty shootouts don’t count towards Dream Team Euros. At the time of writing, Ronaldo appears in just under 20% of teams which makes him the sixth most-popular striker in the game. He’s started every game at the tournament so far but his return of 18 points has to considered disappointing for an asset worth £6m.Gaffers are able to make up to five transfers before Matchday 5 and almost a fifth of them have a big decision to make regarding Ronaldo.Diogo Costa was Portugal’s hero on the nightCredit: GettyIt would be typical of the legendary No7 to save his best form for a massive knockout game against France but he will be up against it versus Dayot Upamecano (£4m) and William Saliba (£4.5m) on current form.Didier Deschamps’ side are yet to concede a goal from open play in Germany while Ronaldo is still waiting for his first goal at the tournament.Logically, Dream Team Euros bosses should probably seek a replacement ahead of the quarter-finals but it’s also true that betting against Ronaldo can backfire in spectacular fashion, such is his big-match pedigree.READ MORE SUN STORIESEven if Portugal get past France then they’ll meet the winner of Spain v Germany in the semi-finals – the top half of the draw is ultra competitive.Gaffers should wait until all the Matchday 5 fixtures are confirmed but it might be worth taking a punt on some attacking assets from the bottom half of the draw. Why Cristiano Ronaldo cried at Euro 2024 More

England squad get serenaded by Ed Sheeran ahead of Switzerland clash as star finally completes his Lego Hogwarts

ENGLAND stars have been serenaded by Ed Sheeran after their dramatic 2-1 victory over Slovakia. The Three Lions were on the brink of crashing out the Euros before a stunning overhead kick by Jude Bellingham and winner by Harry Kane booked their place in the quarter-finals.Ed Sheeran serenaded the England teamLewis Dunk has been building a Lego HogwartsGareth Southgate’s side face Switzerland next and ahead of the game on Saturday evening, the England squad enjoyed a break from training. And they were sung to by pop star Sheeran as he gave them a private performance of his hit ‘The A-Team’.The Ipswich fan ironically played his guitar behind a ‘Lego House’ built by Lewis Dunk.England masseur Ben Mortlock and the centre-back have been keeping busy at the team’s luxury Blackenheim base by building a huge Lego Hogwarts.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLDunk explained: “Ben, he has done more than me so far. START PLANNING LAST YEAR “It’s about planning for the opposition’s penalty takers but also ‘how do we win the psychological game against each opponent?’2. SMART SOUTHGATE LEADERSHIP”Southgate will have two minutes to influence his players as effectively as possible, show he has a plan and get confidence across.”3. DICTATE AS A TEAM”A shootout is really a team performance. Have the goalkeeper walk with the penalty taker into the penalty area to basically create a two-versus-one against the other goalkeeper. Dominate the centre circle, support the players who missed.”4. ‘BULLETPROOF’ INDIVIDUAL ROUTINES “Have really good, individualised and rehearsed pre-shot routines that are bulletproof and polished so they’re more likely to be able to resist the stress and more likely to score.”5. SHOOT YOUR SHOT  “Practise the shot itself, trying to simulate penalty shootouts in training. Even recreating 20 per cent of a Euros final penalty shootout is going to have a benefit for your performance.”AND A JOR DROPPING IDEA…Jordan Pickford is the No1 but Dean Henderson actually has a far better penalty record – saving 8/22 (36 per cent) compared to Pickford’s 8/62 (13 per cent).Jordet said: “One could consider making a late substitution for a penalty shootout. I doubt that they dare to do it in case it fails and the pressure is even higher but it would be a very ballsy move.”Sheeran will be hoping for more Bellingham magic against the Swiss as he is in Germany cheering on England. He was spotted in the stands against Denmark and Slovakia – but will be hoping that less ‘Bad Habits’ creep into the next performance.Meanwhile, England players have been unwinding by playing darts and golf in their spare time. The Sun’s Martin Lipton on Jude Bellingham’s potential ban as UEFA investigate gesture vs SlovakiaThe best of England vs SlovakiaCHECK out all the best action from England’s rollercoaster Euro 2024 last-16 win over Slovakia. Footage of Bellingham’s goal celebration months ago proves gesture was NOT insulting as England star waits on Uefa probe

FOOTAGE has resurfaced that proves Jude Bellingham did his controversial England celebration months ago with Real Madrid. The Three Lions star faces a possible ban for the X-rated gesture performed after netting a last-gasp equaliser in Sunday’s 2-1 Euros win over Slovakia.Footage proves Jude Bellingham has performed his celebration against Slovakia beforeCredit: GettyBellingham did the same thing when he netted a last-gap winner in the El Clasico derbyCredit: AlamyUefa are investigating Bellingham’s gesture, but footage from earlier this year shows him doing the same motion – and to his own fans.On Sunday, Bellingham saved Gareth Southgate’s side from a last-16 exit with a magnificent overhead kick just 90 seconds before full-time.The goal sent the game to extra time, and England set up a quarter-final tie with Switzerland thanks to a timely header from Harry Kane. However, Bellingham courted controversy as he performed a bizarre celebration in the wake of his strike.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLThe ace appeared to gesture grabbing his crotch, with some claiming it was made in the direction of Slovakia’s bench.Bellingham has denied the accusation, claiming: “It was an inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game.”He added: “Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight.”Despite pleading his innocence, Bellingham now faces a Uefa probe and could even end up being banned from Saturday’s last-eight fixture against the Swiss. Most read in Euro 2024However, it has now emerged that Bellingham has performed the same celebration before, proving it was NOT aimed at the Slovakia bench.EURO 2024 FREE BETS AND OFFERSThe midfielder did the exact same gesture when he netted a late winner in Real Madrid’s 3-2 El Clasico victory against Barcelona in April.Bellingham scored the winning goal in stoppage time and celebrated wildly with his team-mates as the Bernabeu crowd went mad.And after enjoying the moment with his fellow Real Madrid stars, he turned to the crowd and gestured to the adoring fans with his hands in front of his shorts. There was NO reaction from Spanish authorities afterwards and Bellingham was not sanctioned. The revelation that he has done it before could be enough to see him spared by Uefa ahead of the weekend. The Sun’s Martin Lipton on Jude Bellingham’s potential ban as UEFA investigate gesture vs SlovakiaAtletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone was fined £17,000 for a similar celebration in 2019Credit: BT SportCristiano Ronaldo got the same punishment when he scored against Simeone’s sideCredit: GettyEURO 2024 LIVE: KEEP UP TO DATE WITH ALL THE LATEST NEWS FROM GERMANYA statement from the football chiefs confirmed an investigation is underway today for a “potential violation of the basic rules of decent conduct.”But Uefa’s decision was blasted by former England star and BBC host Gary Lineker. He tweeted: “For crying out loud, the Euro celebration police are looking into Jude Bellingham. Ridiculous!”Crimes and punishmentsOther players have had the book thrown at them for making crude gestures. Here’s a list of some of the most famous offenders…Dele Alli was banned for one match by Fifa and fined £3,500 for raising his middle finger in a World Cup qualifier against… SLOVAKIA… in 2017. He claimed it was just a friendly joke aimed at Kyle Walker.Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone was slapped with a £17,000 fine for improper conduct for his bizarre crotch-grabbing celebration against Juventus in a Champions League first leg tie in 2019.Then-Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo then repeated the act when he scored against Atletico in the return leg and was hit with an identical fine. He escaped a ban though.Montpellier coach Rene Girard was hit with a one-match European ban and fined £4,000 for raising his finger to opposite number Huub Stevens at the end of a 2012 Champions League clash against Schalke 04.Previously, Uefa fined Diego Simeone £17,000 for a similar gesture during Atletico Madrid’s 2-0 Champions League win over Juventus in February 2019.READ MORE SUN STORIESThe following month, Cristiano Ronaldo mocked Simeone with the same celebration as his hat-trick saw Juve overcome their first-leg defeat against Atleti. He was fined a similar fee, but neither man received a ban for their actions.Gareth Southgate could be forced into some changes if Bellingham is bannedHe could decide to play Phil Foden in midfield with two strikersAlternatively, Cole Palmer could be move into midfieldEngland ratings: Bellingham rescues woeful Three Lions as big names, and manager, have a shockerJUDE BELLINGHAM’S majestic overhead kick deep into stoppage time saved England from a humiliating Euros exit.Gareth Southgate’s side had been utterly woeful and looked to be heading home thanks to Ivan Schranz’s clever finish. But Bellingham came to the rescue in the 96th minute, brilliantly firing into the corner after Marc Guehi had flicked on Kyle Walker’s long throw.Remarkably, it was England’s first shot on target, summing how poor they had been. But another one came soon after, as 53 seconds into extra-time, Harry Kane headed home from close range to set up a quarter-final with Switzerland. It was as close a shave as it comes, and if they play like this against the Swiss, then they will be toast. Here’s how Tom Barclay rated England’s stars… and manager Southgate.Jordan Pickford: 5Appeared to hurt his left hand when taking a big whack in the warm-up, but still played. Fired a lot of long balls and was lucky not to be lobbed by David Strelec’s 45-yard strike.Kyle Walker: 4England’s second-most experienced player had a shocker. He looked uncharacteristically slow, his touch was heavy and his crossing was nowhere near good enough. But it was his long throw that led to Bellingham’s magic.John Stones: 4Said it was time for the senior pros to step up in the build-up to the game, but there was little sign of that until Bellingham did his thing, and he is only 21. Stones fired aimless long balls, gave it away and it was his mistake that almost led to Strelec’s trying his luck from range.Marc Guehi: 5Booked early after Kieran Trippier’s underhit pass meant he had to take out the excellent David Strelec, meaning he is out of the quarter-final. Ivan Schranz bamboozled him for Slovakia’s opener but his flick-on to Bellingham brought the leveller.Kieran Trippier: 4When Jude Bellingham’s good ball found Trippier on the edge of the box early doors, on his favoured right foot, you thought, ‘Here we go’. He smashed it into Row Z.Declan Rice: 5An old-school reducer on Juraj Kucka was a fair tackle, even if it left the 37-year-old hobbling. His curling effort with ten minutes to go cracked against the post.Kobbie Mainoo: 6FIRST start at a major tournament and our only decent performer in an horrendous first half from England. Blasted a volley over but was also booked for a late tackle.Bukayo Saka: 5We all know what a fantastic player Saka is for Arsenal, and for England in games gone by, but he rarely threatened here. Did go the distance though, and in a number of positions.Jude Bellingham: 7 and STAR MANCometh the hour, cometh the man. He had underwhelmed again until the 96th minute, but who cares when you step up like that.Phil Foden: 4Thought he had levelled early in the second half but his tap-in was ruled out by VAR after he was caught being, inexplicably, offside. Just off it all night, in danger of being dropped.Harry Kane: 6Still way off his best – he was nowhere to be seen in the first half and missed a free header after the break – but got it right when it counted in extra time.SUBSTITUTIONSCole Palmer (on for Kieran Trippier, 66): 7FANS were on their feet applauding when Southgate finally made a change and brought him on. So lively and with a lovely delivery, must be in with a chance of starting against the Swiss.Eberechi Eze (on for Kobbie Mainoo, 84): 6Did enough to put off Slovak full-back Peter Pekarik from turning home at close range in extra-time. Looked like he had been hit by a train when Denis Vavro walloped into him.Ivan Toney (on for Phil Foden, 90): 7GRABBED the assist for Kane’s winner by flicking on after a free-kick – which he had won with his strength – had been cleared.Conor Gallagher (on for Harry Kane, 105): 6Southgate rolled the dice in extra-time by trying to shut the game out, taking his captain off for the Chelsea midfielder.Ezri Konsa (on for Jude Bellingham, 105): 6Ditto to Gallagher as Konsa got his first minutes of the tournament in place of the hero Bellingham, which felt a risky strategy.MANAGERGareth Southgate: 3.A lucky, lucky man. Tactically, his team were all long ball, lacked any movement, and did not conjure up a shot on target until Bellingham’s wonder strike – and that came from Walker chucking it in the mixer. Subs took ages in the 90 and then felt risky as he sought to see the game out in extra-time. More
