How England penalty success could be down to breathing guru and Radio 1 DJ as Rice urges stars to ‘manifest’ his methods

It was needed.”Meanwhile, Bellingham thanked England coach and former Chelsea star Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink for also helping the players remain calm from the spot.He said: “I was really confident in my preparation, confident in the things I talked through with Hasselbaink, he’s stepped up for us massively.“It’s the work he does behind closed doors, with the lads being willing to take on that information, that put us in those situations in order to be able to win.”Jude Bellingham thanked Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink for inspiring England’s penalty winCredit: PABellingham fired home his spot-kick with aplombCredit: GettyEngland’s five-point penalty shootout planEXPERT football psychologist Professor Geir Jordet has told Gareth Southgate and his players what they can do to give themselves the best chance of victory in any shootouts. And he has even thrown in a rogue, bold suggestion for the Three Lions manager…1. START PLANNING LAST YEAR “It’s about planning for the opposition’s penalty takers but also ‘how do we win the psychological game against each opponent?’2. SMART SOUTHGATE LEADERSHIP”Southgate will have two minutes to influence his players as effectively as possible, show he has a plan and get confidence across.”3. DICTATE AS A TEAM”A shootout is really a team performance. Have the goalkeeper walk with the penalty taker into the penalty area to basically create a two-versus-one against the other goalkeeper. Dominate the centre circle, support the players who missed.”4. ‘BULLETPROOF’ INDIVIDUAL ROUTINES “Have really good, individualised and rehearsed pre-shot routines that are bulletproof and polished so they’re more likely to be able to resist the stress and more likely to score.”5. SHOOT YOUR SHOT  “Practise the shot itself, trying to simulate penalty shootouts in training. Even recreating 20 per cent of a Euros final penalty shootout is going to have a benefit for your performance.”AND A JOR DROPPING IDEA…Jordan Pickford is the No1 but Dean Henderson actually has a far better penalty record – saving 8/22 (36 per cent) compared to Pickford’s 8/62 (13 per cent).Jordet said: “One could consider making a late substitution for a penalty shootout. I doubt that they dare to do it in case it fails and the pressure is even higher but it would be a very ballsy move.” More

All of their goals in their five tournament games have come from own goals or penalties.Despite all of their attacking talent, France have been ultra pragmatic and very unappealing on the eye which has contributed to four clean sheets in their five matches. But, as has often happened with the French in recent years, they remain on course to clinch a first Euros title since 2000.And their chances are somewhat boosted with Robin Le Normand and Dani Carvajal both suspended while Pedri misses out through injury.EURO 2024 FREE BETS AND OFFERSSpain vs France preview: Betting tips, odds and predictions for Euro 2024Credit: THE SUNSpain vs France oddsOdds are correct at the time of publication and are subject to change.Spain vs France betting tipsResultIt’s extremely difficult to see either of these nations running away with it. In fact it’s generous to see more than one goal being scored on Tuesday night. As mentioned, pragmatic France have been fantastic at the back with four clean sheets in five matches, while goalkeeper Mike Maignan boasts the best save percentage in this competition with 94%.But French have stuttered in attack with talisman Kylian Mbappe continuing struggle. Les Bleus have carved out 89 attempts at goal but not a single chance has found the back of the net.Spain have managed to find the net on 10 occasions, but France’s rearguard action and organisation could see these sides cancel each other out.The match to be drawn 0-0 at 5/1 with William Hill – CLAIM HEREDramaIn for a penny…There have only been four goals scored in France’s five Euro 2024 matches. And given we think a draw and extra time are likely it looks as though penalties are inevitable in Munich on Tuesday. Both sides are available at 8/1 to win via spot kicks if you’re looking for bigger prices. The match to go to penalties at 10/3 with William Hill – CLAIM HEREHe’s backWith Dani Carvajal suspended for Tuesday’s contest, it looks as though 38-year-old back-up right-back Jesus Navas will be drafted in.Navas will become the oldest player to win the Euros if Spain go all the way and the veteran should have his hands full marking Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe all night. He collected seven yellow cards and a red in LaLiga last season, and could add to his tally of 101 career cards against the French.Jesus Navas to be carded at 4/1 with William Hill – CLAIM HERERemember to gamble responsiblyA responsible gambler is someone who:Establishes time and monetary limits before playingOnly gambles with money they can afford to loseNever chase their lossesDoesn’t gamble if they’re upset, angry or depressedGamcare – www.gamcare.org.ukGamble Aware – www.gambleaware.orgFor help with a gambling problem, call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 or go to www.gamstop.co.uk *Ladbrokes. 18+ New UK+IRE Customers only. Jordan Pickford’s incredible record at saving penalties for shows why he’s left past England keepers far behind

The game insights lead Chris Markham reached out to Geir Jordet – a Norwegian sports psychologist who is a leading expert on spot kicks, dubbed ‘The Penalty Professor’.Markham had read Jordet’s book, Pressure: Lessons from the psychology of the penalty shootout, and wanted to pick his brains.Among the tips they received was to slow down and control momentum. Pickford cleverly dragged things out before Akanji’s shot.Jordet told SunSport: “What Pickford showed particularly leading up to the Akanji penalty was a very smart move.”This was all part of his plan. He had him wait for 14 seconds. “This is one of the most consistent findings in my data on goalkeeper involvement.”If goalkeepers are able to stall or delay so that penalty takers have to stand in that position and wait eight or more seconds then these players score on just 44 per cent of their kicks.”England penalty takers were also encouraged to develop a routine before their shots to control nerves, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink helping with penalty preparation.
