Three ways England could line-up at Euro 2024 in what could be Gareth Southgate’s final tournament as Three Lions chief

GARETH SOUTHGATE will already have his thinking cap on when it comes to how England could line-up at Euro 2024. The Three Lions cruised through qualifying and attention now turns to the tournament that begins on June 14.
Gareth Southgate has a selection dilemma on his handsCredit: Getty
That means players have the remainder of the season to force their way into the England squad.
Southgate has been on the receiving end of criticism after some dull performances in qualifying and his contract is up after the Euros.
However, he has a solid record when it truly matters, guiding England to the semi-final, final and quarter-final in the three major tournaments he has been boss at.
Ahead of the draw for Euro 2024 that takes place on December 2, SunSport have taken a look at how England’s starting XI could look in eight months time.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
    1. Southgate’s line-up
Trent Alexander-Arnold is regularly being used as a midfielder by Southgate in recent games – perhaps hinting it could be his place at the Euros.
He has looked accomplished further up the pitch and with the ability the Liverpool man has in possession and at set-pieces, it makes him a serious contender.
With Kavlin Phillips on the bench every week, Jordan Henderson in Saudi Arabia, Conor Gallagher being arguably just short of quality and James Ward-Prowse often overlooked – Alexander-Arnold will fancy his chances.
Southgate does not like to take too many risks in big games and a centre-back partnership of John Stones and Harry Maguire seems his preferred duo.
    Most read in Football
Kyle Walker and Luke Shaw offer tournament experience at full-back.
The gaffer might also value the pace of Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka on the counter-attack against stronger opponents.
Jordan Pickford, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane are certain picks.
This could be Southgate’s preferred team

    2. No Maguire
Harry Maguire has been in and out the Manchester United team this season.
If he cannot nail down a place at his club then Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi may come in.
The 23-year-old has earned the trust of Southgate, starting three of the last four competitive fixtures.
Henderson’s experience and leadership is also liked by the gaffer, who shows no signs of dropping him.
Phil Foden’s talent makes him a potential starter should Rashford’s goal drought continue.
Guehi could be the replacement centre-back
    3. No Kane
England fans dread an injury to skipper Kane – but what does Southgate do just in case?
The back-up striker race is impossible to call with Ollie Watkins, Callum Wilson, Eddie Nketiah and maybe even Jarrod Bowen making cases to be the sub No9 at the Euros.
And don’t forget Ivan Toney’s betting ban is over in January and he has the second-half of the season to force his way into the Three Lions manager’s thinking.
At the moment, Watkins seems to be leading the race with six goals and five assists in 12 Premier League games.
Meanwhile, Phillips, Ben Chilwell and Kieran Trippier could all remain rotation options as the tournament progresses.
Here is how England could look if Kane doesn’t play
    4. Three at the back
Southgate deployed a back-three as England nearly went all the way at the 2018 World Cup.
There’s not many better wing-backs in the game than Reece James and he is a viable option should he overcome persistent injury problems.
Walker has tucked into a back-three before and impressed.
Southgate has used a back-three in the past
    5. Attack Attack Attack
Many fans have demanded more attacking football from England to get the best out of our array of talent in forward areas.
Trippier’s crossing ability would help with that and Rice can sit deep in midfield to allow Bellingham and James Maddison to run the show and create in midfield, with the help of Phil Foden or Jack Grealish.
With players like this in the starting XI, England will want the ball as much as possible.
Lewis Dunk is comfortable in possession and can when start attacks by playing passes through the lines into the exciting front line.
This attacking line-up could get fans off their seats More

Minnows ranked 118th in world land Euro 2024 playoff place despite ZERO qualifying wins and fewer goals than San Marino

ESTONIA are one step away from qualifying for Euro 2024 despite winning ZERO games. The Minnows have lost seven of their eight matches in qualification – but have landed a play-off place on a technicality.

Estonia conceded 22 goals during those eight games, scoring just twice and suffering back-to-back 5-0 defeats to Sweden and Belgium.
That dismal goal return is lower than San Marino, who scored in three consecutive games during qualifying.
Estonia’s rotten record places them bottom of the group and, in normal circumstances, would see them eliminated from Euro 2024.
But not this time – after a technicality means the 118th ranked Minnows have sensationally landed a play-off space.

While they suffered a humiliating Euro group campaign, Estonia prospered in the Nations League.
They topped Group D – the lowest ranked group – ahead of Malta and the aforementioned San Marino.
In order to make the Euro play-offs, 12 teams are selected from Leagues A, B and C, who are then replaced by the next highest-ranked team in their league if they’ve already qualified for Germany.
But if fewer than four teams from the same league enter the play-offs, the highest-ranked team in League D are given the spot instead.

And after Czech Republic beat Moldova 3-0 on Monday, Estonia’s spot was confirmed.
But they face Robert Lewandowski and Poland in the play-off round – meaning they have a significantly uphill task.
If Estonia beat Poland, they will play the winner of the other Path A semifinal- Wales, Finland, Ukraine or Iceland- for a spot at Euro 2024.
Meanwhile, the draw for the final tournament will be made at a ceremony in Hamburg, Germany, on December 2. More

England move UP in latest Fifa world rankings despite uninspiring international break as fans say ‘lol what?’

ENGLAND will leap back to third in the Fifa world rankings next month – despite only drawing in North Macedonia.Gareth Southgate’s side are now back to equalling the Three Lions’ highest place in the rankings since they were introduced by Fifa in 1992.

England were fourth going into this month’s final Euro 2024 qualifier but jumped over Brazil – who dropped to fifth after losing to both Colombia and Argentina in their World Cup qualifying games.
Lionel Messi’s world champions retain top spot ahead of France but England are now within 45 ranking points of Les Bleus and a further 10 adrift of Argentina.
Southgate has publicly targeted top spot for the first time as a signal of England’s stature in the game.
England briefly reached third off the back of the delayed Euro 2020 final in the September 2021 ranking.

They also reached that position for two months in 2012 under Roy Hodgson before dropping as low as 20th within two years.
Southgate inherited a side which stood 12th in 2016 but England have been a permanent presence in the top six since the 2018 World Cup run to the semi-finals.
However, fans were left baffled by their return to third place after an uninspiring 2-0 win over Malta and a 1-1 draw with North Macedonia.
One said: “This ranking is literally pointless. Pointless in the sense it makes no sense. At all.”

The top 10 teams in the Fifa world rankings have moved around
While another simply replied: “Lol what?!”
Brazil and Belgium, who moved above the South Americans into fourth and just two points behind England, will be the next opponents for Southgate’s men in back-to-back Wembley friendlies in March.

Scotland are accompanying the Three Lions to the tournament in Germany and could still be joined by Wales if they progress through the playoffs.
Gareth Southgate’s side made it all the ways to the final last time out, only to lose on penalties.
He will be hoping Harry Kane and Co and go one better when the final rolls around on July 14.
Although their match ups at the group stage could be pivotal to achieving that goal.

In stunning twist of fate our simulation has drawn England and Scotland in the same group.
Turkey and Euro 2020 champions Italy have also been placed in Group 4.
Heavy-hitters France were handed a dream group against Romania, Slovenia and the winner of Play-off C.
Likewise, Spain have been pitted against Albania, Slovakia and Serbia.
Meanwhile, Belgium’s simulated group is no pushover, with a tricky selection against Hungary, Croatia and Switzerland.
Group 6, however, is the obligatory group of death.
Portugal, Austria, the Netherlands and the winner of Play-off B all feature in the set.
SunSport have also taken a look at who may and may not make the plane, with bad news expected for the likes of Mason Mount.

As England qualify for Euro 2024 who’s joining Harry Kane on the plane to Germany & who’ll be forced to watch from sofa?

HARRY KANE is doing some proper damage in Germany and let’s hope he is still delivering in his adopted country on July 14, the day of the Euro 2024 final.Because whatever he achieves with Bayern Munich this season, nothing would get remotely close to the achievement of lifting that trophy in Berlin.
Gareth Southgate will be deciding who to take in his squad for Euro 2024Credit: The Times
Harry Kane is certainly guaranteed a spot in the Euros squadCredit: Getty
Which players are under consideration for England’s Euro 2024 team?
England are the hot tip to win the competition next summer — although, if favourites always won, the bookies would be out of business.
Yet Kane, Jude Bellingham & Co firmly believe this, finally, is their time.
A lame 2-0 win over Malta and a laboured 1-1 draw with North Macedonia hardly got the pulses racing.
And those performances did nothing to dissuade critics of Gareth Southgate — of which there are many — who feel that England will not win a major title while he is in charge.
    READ MORE ON FOOTBALL
But regardless of the Three Lions’ potential goal threat, the key to winning Euro 2024 will be at the back.
In these last two qualifiers, England looked suspect defensively without the injured John Stones. His importance to the team is completely underestimated.
Manchester United’s Harry Maguire, 30, struggled on Monday in North Macedonia but, due to his previous tournament performances and the general lack of experience of those coming through, he is certain to play alongside Stones.
But if the 29-year-old Manchester City defender suffers any more injury issues going into the summer, then Southgate has one hell of a problem.

Do not be fooled, this team is not perfect. The squad does not have the strength in depth that some fans and pundits would have you believe.
There is also a huge issue at left-back. England need Luke Shaw, 28, fit again.
Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell, 26, is injury-jinxed and we do not have any other oven-ready players in this position.
Rico Lewis, 19, did well in Skopje and was unlucky to concede a penalty but he is one for the World Cup in 2026.

As Southgate knows, stability is the key. We keep hearing about the calls to ‘take the handbrake off’.
That attitude, however, did not get the Golden Generation very far.
Southgate is influenced by Germany at Brazil 2014 where boss Joachim Low insisted on a pragmatic approach even though he was getting panned by his critics — who, in the end, were proved wrong.
Equally, Portugal, despite having  Cristiano Ronaldo, were quite functional for much of Euro 2016 and did not even win a group match.
Jude Bellingham will be an important member of the teamCredit: Getty
They were simply horrible to play against and difficult to beat.Southgate’s hope of his team becoming the  world No 1 may have felt premature but those Fifa rankings are a pretty decent guide of where a team stands
With England currently at No 4, the only European team above them are France.
Last year’s World Cup quarter-final, which Les Bleus edged 2-1, showed that there is not much between those two.
Portugal remain a strong bet and could hurt the Three Lions but, elsewhere, this is a weak period in European football.
Reece James could make the plane to GermanyCredit: Getty
Hosts Germany, along with Spain and Italy — who scraped through qualifying — are not in particularly good places.
Southgate knows with some fine-tuning, a bit of luck with injuries and rock-solid performance from his big guns, England will take some stopping.
Captain Kane’s influence is obviously massive on and off the pitch. His absence during the match in Skopje was obvious and it was no coincidence he forced a mistake from an opponent for the equaliser 40 seconds after coming on.
Bellingham’s extraordinary rise under Carlo Ancelotti with Real Madrid will clearly continue over the next six months.
Mason Mount is not expected to make the squad after a poor start to life at Man UnitedCredit: Rex
He enjoyed a decent World Cup but this precocious talent will believe that Euro 2024 will be HIS tournament. Looking at how the 20-year-old’s career has blasted off into orbit, no one should doubt him.
Elsewhere in midfield and wide areas, England have Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Marcus Rashford, James Maddison, Jarrod Bowen, Bukayo Saka, plus Raheem Sterling, who has not played since the World Cup and made a silly mistake by making himself unavailable for the June qualifiers.
Grealish, 28, said: “There is obviously Harry up front and then behind him there is talent there. It is ridiculous.”
However, with the exception of Saka — while the impressive Cole Palmer has just come into the squad — all of those players have been inconsistent for Southgate.
Trent Alexander-Arnold could be an option in midfieldCredit: PA
In central midfield, Southgate will play with another defensive-minded player next to Declan Rice, 24, but we do not have a clue who that will be.
Jordan Henderson committed professional suicide by moving to Saudi Arabia, is 33 and looked off the pace. Kalvin Phillips is not playing for Manchester City and the 27-year-old needs to move clubs.
The Trent Alexander-Arnold experiment continued against North Macedonia and he must be given another chance against Brazil in March but it is not ideal that he will return into defence with Liverpool.
Southgate knows anything other than victory at Euro 2024 will be considered a failure. It is extremely harsh but that is the reality of managing this country, particularly with a couple of genuine world stars in the ranks.
As for England going one better than Euro 2020 and winning it in Germany, realistically, right now, it looks 50-50. More

Wales 1 Turkey 1: Rob Page’s men fail to land automatic qualifying spot for Euro 2024 and must face playoffs lottery

ROBERT PAGE saw Wales condemned to the Euro 2024 play-offs on a night of penalty controversy. But this was an ante-climax for the Dragons as Croatia’s win over Armenia means Page’s men face the lottery of knockout football in March.

Nottingham Forest wing-back Neco Williams gave Wales a glimmer of hope they could pip Luka Modric and co for an automatic spot at next summer’s finals with an eighth-minute curler.
The 2018 World Cup finalists made sure there was no final day Group D miracle after Ante Budimir scored in the 43rd minute against Armenia to ensure a top-two finish.
Yet Wales forward Brennan Johnson felt he should have been awarded two first-half penalties before Page’s men conceded one of their own when Ben Davies was adjudged to have fouled Kenan Yildiz by Slovenian referee Matej Jug.
Turkey substitute Yusuf Yazici sent Danny Ward the wrong way in the 70th minute for Vincenzo Montella’s side, who had already qualified for the Euros, to secure a point.

Wales, who finished third in their group, still have a chance of joining England and Scotland at Germany next summer.
They will have to do it the hard way with the play-offs in March to come.
Wales reached last year’s World Cup via the same route after successes over Austria and Ukraine.
Thursday’s draw will confirm who the Dragons face in the ‘home’ semi-finals in Cardiff with one of three options of the Ukrainians again, Iceland or Finland.

Win that and a final against either Poland or Estonia – with the draw also to determine the final venue – awaits.
When Wales and Page, who was publicly backed by FAW chief executive Noel Mooney last month after a spat, reflect over the winter months, they will rue picking up just one point from Armenia over two qualification matches ahead of knockout football.
After the disappointing 1-1 draw in Yerevan last Saturday which made an automatic qualification place a low probability, Page shuffled his pack with three changes.
Johnson, Nathan Broadhead and Tom Lockyer replaced the Bournemouth trio of Kieffer Moore, David Brooks and the suspended Chris Mepham.
Broadhead sent an early effort wide of the post before Wales got the perfect start through Williams.
Jordan James fed Harry Wilson and the Fulham winger found Williams on the left flank, who cut in and curled his right-footed shot into the bottom corner.
Johnson caused Turkey’s defence problems with his pace but the Tottenham star was shown a yellow card by ref Jug after a clash with Abdulkerim Bardakci.
Johnson felt he should have been awarded two spot-kicks. The 22-year-old and his team-mates saw their appeal waved away after a sliding challenge by Turkey’s Samet Akaydin.
Rob Page will be in Nyon on Thursday to discover the play-off drawCredit: PA
Minutes later, Wales’ appeals were fiercer when Johnson appeared to be bundled over by the same player inside the box. Yet Jug did not point to the spot and there was no VAR intervention.
Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir came on for Ugurcan Cakir in the 33rd minute after the Turkey captain appeared to sustain a foot injury.
With the Red Devils’ No1 Andre Onana picking up a groin injury on international duty with Cameroon, Bayindir could be handed his debut in Sunday’s Premier League clash at Everton.
Bayindir, who played in Turkey’s friendly win over Euro 2024 hosts Germany on Saturday, looked the part to deny Johnson either side of half-time.
Turkey should have levelled when Kerem Akturkoglu fired over from close-range.
But news of Croatia’s opener through Budimir quickly deflated the Cardiff City Stadium.
Wales’ frustration increased further when Jug finally awarded a pen when Yildiz went down softly in the 68th minute following a nudge from Wales skipper Davies.
Johnson beat Bayindir but his effort was ruled out for offside but even a victory wouldn’t have been enough for automatic qualification. More

SunSport’s Big Debate: Does Gareth Southgate have to win Euro 2024 to be a GREAT England manager?

WITH Euro 2024 looming this has led to questions about whether Gareth Southgate needs to win to be a great England manager. And that is what our SunSport experts have been discussing on the Big Debate.
Gareth Southgate’s ability to be a great England manager is under scrutinyCredit: Getty
England qualified for Euro 2024 in Germany next year with two games to go after beating Italy 3-1 at Wembley last month.
However, despite Southgate’s success since taking over the leading role in 2016 many debate whether he needs to secure a European cup to become a great manager.
SunSport’s chief sports writer Dave Kidd believes the Three Lions boss is already one of the best and compared him to Sir Alf Ramsey who led the country to their only World Cup in 1966.
Kidd said: “No I don’t think he does. He absolutely is England’s best manager in 50 years since Alf Ramsey.

“His record speaks for itself. He got to the final of a major championship in the last Euros and performed very well at two World Cups.
“He’s transformed the culture around the place and players actually want to play for England and enjoy playing for England.
“He doesn’t need to win the tournament to prove his greatness. I do think he will win the Euros having said that.”
Coming up from the Three Lions ranks as an U21 coach he broke through into the senior position ahead of the 2018 World Cup.

Unfortunately, Southgate’s England side suffered a 2–1 defeat to Croatia during extra time in the semi-finals.
But he then led the team to a third-place finish in the Uefa Nations League.
Then England succumbed to a 3-2 defeat on penalties in the Euro 2020 final against Italy and were then knocked out in the quarter-finals by France in the 2022 World Cup.
And senior football writer Tom Barclay argued the reason why some fans doubt Southgate’s greatness as England are yet to bring home silverware.
Barclay said: “I do think there’s a reason why fans give him a bit of flack.
“Some of that is to do with short memory. We have forgotten where we are at when he first came in.
“And we also have the best generation of players that i can remember that he has got at his disposal. So there is a lot of responsibility that comes with that.”
Boasting a dazzling array of stars such as Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, the England squad is bursting with talent and potential.
Southgate will have to rise to the challenge if he is to lead his side to European glory next summer. More
