BBC showcase pointless new feature for Euro 2024 that even the most passionate football fan won’t care about

FOOTBALL fans seem to be united in their indifference towards the BBC’s new feature on their Euro 2024 coverage. The Beeb have been showing fans at home how many times the ball spins per second when a goal is scored.Fans are being shown ball data from every goal at Euro 2024Credit: BBCEuro 2024 has got off to an exciting start with 25 goals netted in the opening eight games of the tournament. And every time the ball hits the back of the net, the BBC’s coverage is showing fans the stats behind the goal in a neat little graphic tucked in the bottom corner of the screen.Fans are informed of the distance from goal, the speed of the effort and the spin of the ball. Some supporters are intrigued by how far out a shot is when it nestles in the corner, while others think it is interesting to see how hard the ball was hit.READ MORE ON EURO 2024However, it seems nobody is interested in how many times the ball revolves on its own axis per second – also known as RPS.After learning that Romanian captain Nicolae Stanciu’s stunner against Ukraine racked up 10rps, fans were quick to sarcastically tease the BBC’s feature. On social media, one fan wrote: “When Nicolae Stanciu’s goal went in I said ‘The spin on that looks like 11rps to me’ and then this stat popped up on screen and everyone laughed at me for being so stupid. While another joked: “Rare to see anything above 10RPS these days.”Most read in Euro 2024EURO 2024 FREE BETS AND OFFERSAnd a third commented: “We have spin rate on football shots now? For a team that came into the tournament with a reputation for being makeweights that couldn’t score goals, they have produced a thrilling, determined and organised showing that was simply too much for Ukraine.

    88. Substitute Puscas nearly gets his name on the scoresheet!
Mind you, it would have been for the wrong team.
In defending a right wing corner, the forward beat his goalkeeper to the ball to flash a header narrowly wide of his own far post.

    86. Bogdan Racovitan is on to shore up the Romania defence. Not that it needs much shoring at this stage.
The 24-year-old defender replaces captain, goalscorer and standout performer Nicolae Stanciu, who comes off to a hero’s reception.

    84. There’s the Mykhailo Mudryk we all know and love.
Bursting through on the left at a pace too quick for his own good, rather than considering his options, the Chelsea swipes wildly at the ball with his left foot to send it swerving into the crowd.

On in their place come Valentin Mihaila and Ianis – son of Gheorghe – Hagi.

    59. There are shocked faces among the Ukrainian ranks, none more so than Andriy Shevchenko in the stand who led his country to the Last 16 at Euro 2020.
Both teams are readying changes, albeit for very different reasons.
    Copy linkCopiedRomania 3-0 Ukraine
    57. And now Romania do have another!
Edward Iordanescu’s side score their third, and their second within four second half minutes thanks to Denis Dragus.
The striker is on hand to covert from close range after Dennis Man had made short work of a short corner and some more half-hearted defending, notably from Mykhailo Mudryk and Mykola Shaparenko.
There’s a momentary VAR check while it’s confirmed that the Romania goalscorer was onside, and eventually he and his countrymen are giving the green light to celebrate all over again.

WHAT Gareth Southgate said about his axed England stars after confirming his 26-man England squad for Euro 2024.
    Harry Maguire
“The decision on Harry [Maguire] is totally about his physical condition and his recovery from the injury. There is no other reason as he is one of our strongest centre-backs.
“Harry has made some progress, but it’s been complicated and we wouldn’t have had him in the group stages. There were too many hurdles to get through without being clear where we might get to.
“Knowing we haven’t got a clean bill of health across the rest of the backline, we need players who are fit and ready to go from the start.
“It was a really difficult call, you know how I feel about Harry, what he’s done for England and for me as a manager. ”
    Jack Grealish
“I have just delivered a really difficult conversation to a lad who is devastated.
“I think the world of him as a kid.“It certainly doesn’t get any easier.
“You put yourself in the shoes of a player, a parent. You understand that for these players this is a devastating moment.
“We knew we had a couple of really difficult days coming up.”
    James Maddison
“Madders [Maddison] and Jack [Grealish] would have provided us with something different as well and they’ve been tough calls.
“They’re calls we’ve gone over and over and over as a group of staff to try to be fair and to try to use the right rationale.
“We back our decisions but we recognise we could have gone a different route. The boys are big characters, fabulous team-mates and great boys to work with.
“It’s sad to have to deliver that news to them.”
    Jarrad Branthwaite
“It’s a bit early for Jarrad [Branthwaite]. He has had a fabulous season, it was good to get him on the pitch the other night.
“But of course, in an ideal world, you’d like that balance of left-footers. For him to be in ahead of the others, I don’t think it would have been the right call at this stage.”
    Jarell Quansah
“Jarell Quansah has stayed with us. He’s not had the experience of an England international at Wembley. It’ll be great for him to be us for the game.
“Hopefully we’re not needing to call anyone else in.” More

Unsung Spain hero Fabian Ruiz currently features in just 1.3% of Dream Team Euros sides

DREAM TEAM EUROS managers should be paying close attention to which players are thriving in Matchday 1.One individual who certainly falls into that category is Fabian Ruiz (£3.5m).Ruiz and Spain sent out a statement of intent against CroatiaCredit: Dream TeamThe Spain midfielder produced three minutes of magic to put his side firmly in the ascendancy against Croatia on Saturday, an advantage Luis de la Fuente’s side converted into a 3-0 victory.Just before the half-hour mark, Ruiz slipped a perfectly-weighted throughball into the path of Alvaro Morata (£5.5m), who finished in a one-on-one situation to break the deadlock.Moments later, the PSG playmaker exhibited great skill and composure to beat two defenders on the edge of the box and fire home a second.Ruiz’s goal is among the best scored at the tournament to date and would perhaps have been lauded more had it been scored by one of Spain’s more celebrated players. The 28-year-old is the unsung hero in midfield alongside Rodri (£4m), widely acknowledged as the best player in his position in world football, and Pedri (£4m), Barcelona’s supremely talented 21-year-old.Ruiz scored and assisted on SundayCredit: APAnd it’s probably because Ruiz has a lower profile among Dream Team Euros bosses that he features in just 1.3% of teams at the time of writing. What matters most is that is that he returned 13 points against Croatia in a fixture that, on paper, promised to be among the most competitive at top end of the scale in Matchday 1.As it turned out, La Roja overwhelmed Luka Modric (£4m) and company in the first half and while they had to withstand some pressure after the break, they ultimately completed a statement win that has made them favourites to top Group B.Most read in FootballAs one of the most successful Dream Team Euros assets in his position so far, Ruiz will be viewed as a potential differential option ahead of Matchday 2.However, Spain will once again be involved in arguably the standout match-up of the lot when they meet Italy in Gelsenkirchen on Thursday.Spain are among the most impressive sides at the Euros so farCredit: ReutersThat being said, gaffers who stayed clear of Spain assets in Matchday 1 because of their potentially tricky fixture missed out plentiful points.Ruiz is a typically Spanish midfielder in that he is an accomplished technician who is comfortable in tight spaces and progresses the ball smoothly.Truth be told, he generally does his best work in the middle third of the pitch but it’s worth noting he also scored in his side’s final pre-tournament friendly; a real poacher’s effort too.If Spain outclass Italy then gaffers will surely be keen to back them in Matchday 3 (vs Albania) and the round of 16 (potentially a third-place finisher).
