I could have starred alongside Premier League icons at Euro 2024 – but instead I’m ready to win the Tour de France

REMCO EVENEPOEL could have lined up for Belgium at Euro 2024 but is instead preparing to win the Tour de France. The 24-year-old has never taken part in cycling’s grandest race before, yet is one of the favourites for this year’s competition.Remco Evenepoel is preparing for his first Tour de France but he could have been featuring at the EurosCredit: GettyThe cycling star captained Belgium at youth levelCredit: RexThe former world champion played alongside Jeremy Doku and Albert Sambi LokongaCredit: GettyHe is set to brush shoulders alongside previous winners Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, but could have been playing with some of his former team-mates in Germany.Evenepoel was a talented young player and spent time in the academies of Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven before quitting to focus on cycling. He also represented Belgium across different youth groups, captaining the Under-16 side.Evenepoel impressed from an early age with his incredible fitness levels a particular stand out characteristic, but what shone most was his professionalism and mentality.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLHe played alongside Arsenal midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga at Anderlecht, who believes Evenepoel’s fitness regime as a teenager may have served his cycling career well.Lokonga told The Athletic: “He was one year below me but sometimes the 1999 and 2000 players trained together, and so he trained with me.“It’s crazy what he’s done. I know that when he was young, when we had to run up and down, he was already one of the best so that maybe helped with the distances you ride when you are a cyclist.”Evenepoel was registering stress test results comparable to that of a triathlete when he was in the U10s, with one former coach likening his “incredible endurance” to a moped. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSThe 2022 Vuelta a Espana winner himself said his engine was a big factor in his football ability, saying: “My style of play was a bit similar to how I ride a bike.“I had a big engine and tried to cover every blade of grass.”Austrian supporters taunt French fans by snapping BAGUETTES in front of them ahead of Euro 2024 clash-Evenepoel was a prolific winner from early on in his cycling career, becoming road race world champion at the age of 22 before winning the world time trial a year later. His professionalism has been exemplary and it is a trait the Belgian picked up as a teenager, earning him the role of captain with the national team.Belgium U16s coach Bob Browaeys told The Athletic: “I spoke to him often in that role.“And I was always puzzled. He was so professional at such a young age; just 15, talking about his preparations for games, for his careers. He was special. Uncommon.“He was at the highest level, I never had a player with such a high-performance mindset. That was unbelievable.”He even became a right-hand man to Anderlecht coach Stephane Stassin, and had a big influence over his other team-mates.Stassin recalled in an interview with Cycling Weekly: “In the older age groups, you’re the right hand of the coach but that’s not always easy with the youth teams because they’re so young.“Remco, however, was the exception: he was effectively the right hand of the coach and he talked to his team-mates. When I asked him to do something, sometimes he would say that he had already talked with his team-mates and arranged what was needed.”Evenepoel began his football career as a midfielder but lacked tactical nous, so was moved to left-back shortly before he quit altogether. He once played alongside Manchester City and Belgium star Jeremy Doku as well as RB Leipzig defender Lois Openda, but as his peers overtook him technically Evenepoel found himself out of favour, before giving up football for good.READ MORE SUN STORIESHe told The Lanterne Rouge cycling podcast: “I was captain of the national team, then they put me on the bench and I started to ask myself questions: ‘Is it worth continuing?’. “Then, I wasn’t even on the bench anymore. Germany vs Hungary – Euro 2024: Hosts aiming to secure last-16 qualification with win – stream FREE, TV, team news

GERMANY head into their second Euro 2024 group stage as the most in-form team of the tournament. The hosts hammered Scotland 5-1 to lay down a marker to their rivals. Germany are in fine form heading into their second group stage matchCredit: GettyMeanwhile, Hungary were beaten 3-1 by Switzerland in their very first match of the tournament. Germany showed ruthless all-out attack against Scotland with Jamal Musiala the star man. But Arsenal’s Kai Havertz also got a goal and assist to give him the perfect start to the tournament. Germany have failed to hit the same heights of their 2014 World Cup win in recent tournaments following a transitional period. But they look to have come out the other end of it with a fearsome mix of experience and prospect. Ex-Chelsea centre-back and two-time Champions League winner Antonio Rudiger at the heart of defence and former Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan in midfield. Hungary have it all to do to pull of what would be a remarkable upset but their form heading into the Euros offered some hope. But if the opening match is anything to go by, Germany are in no mood to show mercy. Most read in Euro 2024Watch Kevin De Bruyne WALK OUT of interview after Belgium stunned by Slovakia in shock Euro 2024 defeatWhat is their form like?Well, Germany are the top scorers after one game played following their rout over the Scots in which they had five different scorers. Germany’s last defeat came in November against Austria in a 2-0 friendly. Hungary’s form heading into the Euros was surprisingly stellar, losing just ONCE in two years, a 2-1 friendly defeat to Ireland. What is the team news and any injuries to worry about?Germany’s free-scoring squad came out unscathed after their opening day drubbing. But Robert Andrich and Jonathan Tah were both booked and could be rested to avoid any suspensions. Meanwhile, Hungary are still expected to be without Loic Nego or Callum Styles while Serge Gnabry misses the Euros through injury. Who will be the star men?Germany had many bright sparks against Scotland but none more so than Bayern Munich’s Musiala. He started out wide but he had influence all round the pitch, scoring a stunner in the first half. Hungary striker Martin Adam became an overnight sensation after fans picked up on his hulking physique. He has 13 goals in South Korea’s top flight. What have the managers said?Julian Nagelsmann said: “Hungary is an unpleasant opponent, they can sometimes be wild and they’re difficult to get a hold of. “There are a lot of free spirits out there.”Marco Rossi said: “Germany are a different team than the last Euros, they proved it against Scotland. “In my opinion they are the biggest favourite of the European Championship.”EURO 2024 FREE BETS AND OFFERSWhen is Germany vs Hungary?

Denmark vs England – Euro 2024: Three Lions aiming to secure last-16 spot as Southgate faces XI headache – stream FREE

ENGLAND will seal their place in the knockout stages with a win over Denmark on Thursday evening.Gareth Southgate’s men kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Serbia thanks to an inspired performance from Jude Bellingham.Jude Bellingham scored in England’s opening game win over DenmarkCredit: PADenmark need a win to improve their chances of reaching the second roundCredit: GettyDenmark could not muster a victory of their own just hours earlier as they drew 1-1 with Slovenia. It means their clash with England becomes even more important as they eye a spot in the second round.Failure to beat the Three Lions could leave Denmark outside the top two spots ahead of their final group game against Serbia.Defeat and a Slovenia win over Serbia would put Denmark thoroughly on the back foot. And they will be the underdogs heading into this one, despite England’s somewhat flat display in Gelsenkirchen.First place in the group will secure a last-16 tie against a third-place finisher, so it is there for England to clinch a smoother path towards the quarter-finals.But can they maintain their 100 per cent start in Frankfurt? Here is everything you need to know ahead of the game. Most read in Euro 2024EURO 2024 FREE BETS AND OFFERSWhat is their form like?Eriksen’s strike gave Denmark the perfect start to their Euros campaign against Slovenia. But they ended up holding on towards the end, a tactic that proved costly when Erik Janza pounced to equalise late on.England come into the game knowing three points could seal top spot in the group. But they will almost certainly need to improve on their performance against Serbia.Southgate’s men were criticised for dropping deeper in the second half and relinquishing control of the game – something that needs addressing if they have serious hopes of winning the tournament. What is the team news and any injuries to worry about?Denmark pair Christian Norgaard and Mathias Jensen are two players pushing to force their way into the Danes’ starting line-up following a disappointing draw to Slovenia.Morten Hjulmand and Jonas Wind could be the pair to make way.Captain Simon Kjaer may also come back into the fold after being rested for the opener.England are not expected to make any changes from the XI that began the win over Serbia.Luke Shaw is still not set to be ready to start the game, though he could come off the bench.Trent Alexander-Arnold and Phil Foden should keep their places ahead of competition from Conor Gallagher, Eberechi Eze and Anthony Gordon.Who will be the star men?Christian EriksenChristian Eriksen remains Denmark’s main manEriksen proved against Slovenia that he remains the Danes’ main man.Everything runs through the Manchester United midfielder when they go forward and they will need him to be their source of creativity against England. But at the age of 32 it remains to be seen whether he has the physical capabilities to perform at a high level every few days.Jude BellinghamJude Bellingham was sensational in England’s opening gameBellingham’s performance against Serbia was one of the standout in the tournament so far.The England man controlled the game in the first half, scoring and involving himself in everything positive that Southgate’s men created. But the Denmark game will be his 50th for club and country this season, so there is a question mark as to whether he can manage his fitness levels as the Euros unfold. What have the managers said?Speaking after the win over Serbia, England boss Southgate said: “I thought physically we had players that needed the game. We’ve had a lot of players that hadn’t played 90 minutes for a long time.”We expended a lot of energy in that first half. I knew that we would dip. And it was a good moment to bring Conor [Gallagher] into the game, who can get up to the ball and provide that bit more defensive solidity at that time.”There’s obviously a lot of new players, young players, so the team that started was a very experienced team in terms of international and club bar Marc, really, who had a brilliant game.”So we’re just going to have to assess as we go from game to game.”SunSport predictionDenmark 0-2 EnglandWhen is Denmark vs England?

Ruben Dias, Goncalo Inacio and Joao Palhinha are all capable of building attacks from the back, given Portugal a unique dimension to their attack.
Attacking midfielders Bruno Fernandes and Joao Felix can cause any defence problems as they look to feed Ronaldo and/or Ramos.
    How Portugal defend
In contrast to the approach under Santos, Portugal will play with a medium-to-high block and look to win possession up the field.
Players will press aggressively to provide support for Ronaldo, who clearly tends to do less work defensively.

Lineker sparked an impartiality row in March 2023 after saying the Government rhetoric on immigration was similar to that of 1930s Germany.
But after a review, BBC bosses decided to allow its top stars to share their own views on social media and only ruled they should stop short of political campaigning.
Then, in December the same year, the former England footballer turned pundit Lineker was among a group of celebrities urging ministers to scrap their Rwanda scheme and come up with a “fair new plan for refugees”.
Samir Shah, the BBC’s new chairman, said Lineker appeared to breach social media guidelines when he used X to apparently mock Tory MPs after signing an open letter criticising the policy.
But Tory MPs hit back with Cabinet Minister Grant Shapps saying that Lineker should stick to presenting football.
In Janurary this year, he sparked another BBC row and was slammed as “ignorant” after sharing a tweet calling to ban Israel from world football.
The Match Of The Day presenter reposted a statement on X, formerly Twitter, from a pro-Palestinian campaign calling for Israel to be ousted from global tournaments and games “until it ends its grave violations of international law”.
However, the original tweet seems to no longer appear on the former England star’s account.
Lineker, 63, reposted the tweet from the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic & Cultural Boycott of Israel.
It included a statement from the Palestinian Football Association which called upon Fifa and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to join all regional and global sporting bodies in sanctioning Israel.
The statement demanded that they “take an urgent stance towards Israel’s grave violations of human rights and subject it to legal accountability measures”.
The post went on to demand that the public and officials pressure organisations “to suspend Israel’s membership and ban it from international tournaments and games until it ends its grave violations of international law, particularly its apartheid rule and the crime of genocide it is perpetuating in Gaza”.
But MPs demanded that the BBC intervenes to sanction its highest-paid presenter with some slamming the repost as “ignorant”. More

GARETH SOUTHGATE has plenty to think about ahead of Thursday’s second Group C game against Denmark.
SunSport’s CHARLIE WYETT looks at the major issues facing the England boss…
    TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD
Southgate believes the Liverpool right-back could ultimately be an outstanding partner for Declan Rice in midfield. Alexander-Arnold did OK in the 1-0 win over Serbia but he is a work in progress in this position — to put it mildly. Asked about his display, Southgate said: “It seemed he was great when we were in control but struggled a bit when we lost control.” Conor Gallagher was introduced and he made England more solid. If Alexander-Arnold is dropped for Denmark, the entire experiment is over.
    PHIL FODEN
The Manchester City star is becoming an enigma, which is such a shame. Particularly as he has come off an absolutely terrific season for City. Foden has now played 35 times for England and you can count the good games on one hand. Southgate will surely stick with Foden for the Denmark match rather than unleash Anthony Gordon or Eberechi Eze. If Foden struggles on Thursday, Southgate has to make the call and replace him after an hour.
    KIERAN TRIPPIER
The Newcastle defender did well against Serbia even though he is not fully fit, having only just returned from a long lay-off. Add the fact he is right-footed and neither is he a perfect fit on the left. Southgate aims to start Luke Shaw when he is 100 per cent but this is unlikely to be against Denmark.
    HARRY KANE
The England captain nearly scored his 64th international goal when he hit the bar — but it was still a struggle. He only touched the ball twice in the first half. Kane is certainly not dropping as deeply as he has in the past so the service has to be better. Equally, he does not look totally match sharp. He missed the end of the season with Bayern Munich with a back injury although he returned as a sub for England against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The slight concern over Kane was one reason a third striker, Ivan Toney, was added to the  squad, with both James Maddison and Jack Grealish missing out. More
