Rio Ferdinand says Bukayo Saka should play at LEFT-BACK for England as Luke Shaw still fails to train with team-mates

RIO FERDINAND reckons Gareth Southgate should deploy Bukayo Saka at LEFT BACK against Denmark.Kieran Trippier was forced to swap wings and fill in for the injured Luke Shaw in England’s Euro 2024 opener against Serbia but is a doubt for Thursday’s match.Luke Shaw is a doubt for England’s clash with Denmark on ThursdayCredit: PAKieran Trippier deputized for the Manchester United man in the Three Lions’ win over Serbia but is a doubt for tomorrow’s matchCredit: AlamyRio Ferdinand reckons Bukayo Saka should start at left back if Shaw is still outCredit: GETTYFirst-choice left-back Shaw is doubtful for the dust-up with the Danes, with his absence prompting former Three Lions defender Ferdinand to call for Saka to fill the void left by the Manchester United man.During the latest episode of his Vibe with Five podcast, he said: “If Shaw’s not fit then 100 per cent, we’re bang in trouble.”We would have to put Saka at left-back. I’d play Saka at left-back then I would.”If you ain’t got Shaw and you ain’t got Trippier then I would play Saka at left-back. READ MORE ON EURO 2024″I’d play it where as soon as we get possession Saka is a left winger.”Saka, of course, initially broke into Arsenal’s first-team as a left back – filling in for Sead Kolasinac – in 2018.The then 18-year-old impressed former manager Unai Emery and would eventually become a permanent fixture in the starting XI in a more advanced role.Saka shone at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup playing on the right wing and cutting inside with his wand of a left foot. Most read in Euro 2024EURO 2024 FREE BETS AND OFFERSBy Tom Barclay
BUKAYO SAKA feels it is his responsibility to help England’s less experienced players – despite being just 22.
The Arsenal winger is competing in his THIRD major tournament already and earned his 34th cap in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Serbia.
He does not feel like a veteran but is aware of the role he can play given 12 of Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad are at their first major tournament this summer in Germany.
Gunners star Saka told ITV Football: “No, I don’t feel like a veteran. I think I’ve got a lot to improve on and a long way to go.
“But I do feel like I have a lot more experience now and especially in the team, I have a bit more experience than some other players.
“So it’s my responsibility to help the players coming in.”
Marc Guehi made his major-tournament bow with his assured display against the Serbs.
Conor Gallagher, Jarrod Bowen and Kobbie Mainoo also made debuts at this level when coming off the bench in Gelsenkirchen.
Chelsea man Gallagher does have tournament experience having gone to the 2022 Qatar World Cup, but did not actually play a minute.
While squad-members Adam Wharton, Eberechi Eze, Joe Gomez, Ezri Konsa, Ollie Watkins, Anthony Gordon, Cole Palmer, Lewis Dunk and Ivan Toney are all at their first one.
Saka, who played at the last Euros and in Doha two years ago, added: “It’s about making everyone feel comfortable, speaking to everyone and making everyone feel included and helping create an environment where they feel like they can express themselves and be confident.
“Everyone is here because they are exceptional at football.”
Saka’s first major tournament came at Euro 2020, which was delayed by a year due to Covid.
England came so close to triumphing but lost out to Italy in the final on a penalty shootout, with Saka one of the Three Lions players to miss his spot-kick.
He played in that campaign with a maturity that belied his teenage years – but feels he is on a different level now.
Saka, who has 28 goal involvements in his 34 caps (11 goals, 17 assists), added: “I’d say I’ve matured a lot, on and off the pitch.
“Of course, my game has gone to another level. I feel like I’m a better player as well.
“(Looking back, the overriding feeling from Euro 2020 is) still disappointment at losing a final.
“But we’ve gained experience from that and are hoping to go one step further.”
Arsenal academy product Saka feels his dribbling, finishing and work-rate are his strong points – but is still working on his heading.
He dovetailed beautifully with Jude Bellingham on Sunday, teeing up the Real Madrid superstar to head home the only goal of the game in the first 13 minutes.
Saka has played with the 20-year-old for almost the last four years now, as his one and only Under-21s cap was alongside Bellingham in a 6-0 win in Kosovo in September 2020.
Yet even the Gunners winger has been blown away by what Bellingham has achieved this term, winning La Liga, the Champions League and the Spanish league’s player of the year.
Asked to sum up the ex-Borussia Dortmund man, who was sublime against Serbia, in one word, Saka replied: “Wow.
“Since he was 17, he was always so mature. He just knew how to carry himself on and off the pitch.
“What he’s done this season has been special.
“So I would say, yeah, I was a bit taken aback because 20 years old, going to Madrid and doing what he’s done, it’s unbelievable.
“But it’s no surprise when you know him as a person.”
An attack of Saka, Bellingham, Phil Foden and Harry Kane has England fans salivating if the latter two can produce what are capable of after quiet displays in Gelsenkirchen.
Saka summed up that excitement when discussing the awesome foursome by simply saying: “Everything is possible with that.”

The 22-year-old tormented Serbia left-back Strahinja Pavlovic throughout the first half of the Three Lions’ Group C opener and set up Jude Bellingham’s 13th-minute winner.Ferdinand said of the winger’s display: “I thought Saka was really good.Saka gives two-word response after being asked if goal was ‘world class’ just days after Ferdinand questioned talents”First 45, the wing-play he showed… you know what I liked about it? He mixed it up.”He didn’t always come inside. He went on the outside a couple of times.”The defender didn’t know which way he was going to go but second half, when they put pressure on us, that was the problem.”We didn’t respond well to that.” More

Belgium vs Romania previewBelgium’s golden generation couldn’t reach their potential. This new crop have somehow started even poorer than that. It’s still a strong Belgian side that took to the field on Monday night to face Slovakia, which makes the 1-0 defeat even more of a shock. They’ll still fancy progressing out the group – and probably still have eyes on being group winners – but their defeat was the first big shock of the tournament and HAS to kick them into gear.Romelu Lukaku did have the ball in the net on two occasions, both ruled out by VAR.EURO 2024 FREE BETS AND OFFERSWith Ukraine still to come, Kevin de Bruyne and co won’t be panicking yet but it was far from a decent start. To the contrary, Romania started splendidly with a momentous 3-0 win over Ukraine in their opening match.Nicolae Stanciu opened the scoring with an absolute screamer, only for Razvan Marin to double their lead with an equally special goal. There was lots to like about the performance and avoiding defeat here would put them into an incredible position for the knockout rounds.Belgium vs Romania oddsPrices from William Hill and are correct at the time of publishing though subject to change.Belgium vs Romania tipsBouncebackThey need a result and you have to assume Belgium will get exactly that. There’s too much quality in that squad for them not to get up and running sooner rather than later, even with Romania’s impressive start.Question marks at the back though so fancy the Romanians to get on the scoresheet.

Slovenia vs Serbia – Euro 2024: Serbians look to get off mark as Slovenians eye historic run – stream FREE and team news

NARROW results in Group C’s opening games have set up a group that could go in any direction.Every game is pivotal in three-match group stages, but the result of the Slovenia and Serbia match could end up sending one of the sides home.Serbia will be hoping to get some goals and points on the board at Euro 2024 after defeat to EnglandCredit: AlamySlovenia got off the mark with a 1-1 draw against DenmarkCredit: GettySlovenia, competing in their first Euros since 2000, fought tooth and nail and Denmark to earn a 1-1 draw in their opening game.Christian Eriksen’s stunning goal was equalled by a powerful strike from Erik Janža as the ball fell to him outside the box from a corner. Benjamin Sesko also hit the post before that, and Slovenia – ranked 57th in the world by Fifa – appeared to be good value for a win.Slovenian newspaper Delo said the national side had taken their “first step toward fulfilling their dream in Germany”, and their second mighty step will need to be to pick up a result against Serbia.Read more in Euro 2024Meanwhile, Serbia were defeated 1-0 in a slugfest of a match against England as Jude Bellingham’s late run into the area proved the difference following a deflected Bukayo Saka cross. After a slow start Serbia – ranked 33rd in Fifa’s rankings – grew into the game and bombarded the box, almost finding reward as Jordan Pickford was forced into action. The likes of Dusan Vlahovic proved to be a handful, and on another day they may have scored. Serbia are a physically imposing team with the hard graft to match, and they should be able to use that to their advantage to get some goals and, crucially, points on the board at Euro 2024.Most read in FootballEURO 2024 FREE BETS AND OFFERSSlovenia Euro 2024 guideTHE SCOTLAND of the Balkans – Slovenia have qualified for three tournaments since independence in 1990 but never reached the knockout stages.
However, striker Benjamin Sesko is touted as the next Erling Haaland and gives the Slovenes reason to be more optimistic this time.
    MANAGER: Matjaz Kek
In his second spell as boss and has been in charge since 2018 – lost just two qualifying games despite having to overcome the death of his father.
    STAR MAN: Jan Oblak
The Slovenes will hope that Sesko can provide the goals at one end while Oblak, one of the best goalkeepers in the world, can keep them out at the other.
    How Slovenia attack
Slovenia will be one of few teams at the Euros to play a 4-4-2, with Sesko partnering former Middlesbrough striker Andraz Sporar up front.
When Slovenia attack, the two wingers will come inside to play as makeshift attacking midfielders in a front four. They are also dangerous on the counter-attack.
    How Slovenia defend
Slovenia will play in two banks of four and drop deep to deny the opposition space.
They will not break out of their shape to press under almost any circumstances.

Serbia Euro 2024 guideSERBIA have qualified for three of the last four World Cups but been non-existent on the European front in the past 24 years.
When they last appeared at the Euros, back in 2000, they were still called Yugoslavia and played in blue, as opposed to the red they wear today.
    MANAGER: Dragan Stojkovic
Captain, leader, legend of the old Yugoslavia. Was named in the team of the tournament at Italia 90.
    STAR MAN: Dusan Tadic
His best years may be behind him, but the 35-year-old is still capable of controlling games in midfield with a creative spark that cannot be ignored.
    How Serbia attack
Serbia have a slow and patient build-up as they look to work the ball into the middle of the pitch.
But when they reach those areas they will rapidly change the pace and look to find foxes in the box, Aleksandar Mitrovic and/or Dusan Vlahovic.
    How Serbia defend
Serbia’s striker tends to press high while the rest of the team sit deeper.
But their press can be inconsistent, leaving them easy to pass through or beat with a ball over the top.

What does their form look like?Slovenia, nicknamed The Dragons, are unbeaten in any of their last seven games, with four wins and three draws. Their last defeat ironically came against the Danes last November in Euro 2024 qualifying.Serbia’s form is less impressive, with only four wins, five losses and one draw in their last ten games.Their warm-up games saw the White Eagles beat Sweden 3-0 and lose 1-0 to Austria, so their form is volatile. The two nations have only ever met each other four times, all of which have been competitive fixtures. The record stands at two draws and one win each, so game five could tip the win column in one team’s favour. What is the team news and any injuries to worry about?Slovenia have no fresh injuries to worry about so will likely play a similar team to the one in their opening match.Meanwhile, Serbia will be without the services of Juventus winger Filip Kostic after he suffered a knee ligament injury.Filip Mladenovic came on for him that game so could be in line to start, unless his manager favours the creativity of Dusan Tadic more in a game suhch as this.Who will be the star men?Jan OblakHis country’s most experienced player and a genuine world class talent, Atletico Madrid stopper Jan Oblak will be called into action against Serbia. His saves will prove vital in thwarting Serbia’s attackers, who will be up for this game after being locked out by England.Dusan VlahovicVlahovic didn’t have his finest game against England but still proved a handful.Should have more joy against Slovenia this time around where he can use his strength, speed and remarkable technical quality to punish his markers. What have the managers said?Slovenia coach Matjaž Kek, rued his side’s lack of tournament experience, but said they grew in confidence and will use that against Serbia. He said: “Many of my players have never played in such a big competition. When we saw something was possible [in the opener against Denmark], they started playing. “I think we will learn from this. When this team play their second or third big tournament, they will be much stronger from the outset.”Serbia boss Dragan Stojkovic said his team would do everything to try and win this game after their “frustrating” result. He said: “We’re going to do whatever we can against Slovenia – we have to win that. “I congratulate all the players [after the match against England] – there are no frustrations apart from the result. I don’t like losing but it’s part of the job.”SunSport predictionSlovenia will come out of the blocks firing after their learning curve against Denmark, however, Serbia’s quality should prove too much and tournament experience will play a huge role.Slovenia 1-2 SerbiaWhen is Slovenia vs Serbia?
Slovenia’s clash against Serbia will take place on Thursday, June 20.
The game will kick off at 2pm BST.
The Allianz Arena, home of Bayern Munich, will play host to the fixture.
