Poland 1 Austria 3: Ralf Rangnick’s side show Man Utd what they’re missing to put Poles on verge of elimination

ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI’S Poland look on the brink of a Euros exit – after being sold a dummy by fellow old-timer Marko Arnautovic. It was a clever step-over from ex-West Ham striker Arnautovic, 35, that paved the way for Christoph Baumgartner’s crucial strike to put Austria 2-1 up.Austria cruised to a 3-1 win over PolandCredit: AFPGernot Trauner scored the opening goalCredit: GettyAustria made the most of their chances to seal the winThat was after Polish forward Krysztof Piatek had chalked off Gernot Trauner’s early opener before half-time.Arnautovic then killed the game off for good when converting a 78th-minute penalty after ex-Manchester United loanee Marcel Sabitzer had been tripped by Wojciech Szczesny.Legend Lewandowski, also 35 and fit enough only to be introduced on the hour, watched on as his nation faced up to the likely prospect of a third group-stage exit in four Euros.Austria chief Ralf Rangnick meanwhile had played a blinder, with two of his three changes from their opening defeat to France scoring the goals.Read More on Euro 2024Trauner was one of two centre-back switches – with Kylian Mbappe nose-breaker Kevin Danso dropping out – while Arnautovic was drafted in up top.It made quite the change from the last time he bossed a team in red, after that horrorshow spell in interim charge of Manchester United.EURO 2024 FREE BETS AND OFFERSKrzysztof Piatek equalised at the 30-minute markCredit: EPAChristoph Baumgartner restored Austria’s lead in the second halfCredit: EPAHere, you could see why Bayern Munich wanted him before they turned their attention to Vincent Kompany. His opposite number, dapper Michal Probierz, had been dealt a blow with the Lewandowski fitness news. Most read in Euro 2024Moment vast swarm of BEES invades Euro 2024 stadium just hours before Germany vs Hungary clashAt least Probierz, sporting a three-piece suit including a beige waistcoat a la Gareth Southgate in 2018, must have felt like he had home advantage in Berlin’s Olympiastadion. The Poland fans appeared to outnumber their Austrian counterparts three-to-one, and let off several flares during the national anthems. This ground will host the final on July 14, not that England supporters will expect to be here watching their team then given the sorry state Southgate’s side are in.Trauner provided the ideal start by heading in Philipp Mwene’s super cross inside nine minutes to send the red army in the stands potty.David Alaba, Austria’s best player but not in the squad due to injury, high-fived a team-mate on the sidelines in his unusual role of “non-playing captain”.Poland fluffed a chance to hit straight back when Nicola Zalewski blazed well over, and Probierz was not a happy bunny. The bald-headed coach was soon on the edge of his technical area going barmy at his players. On the half hour, he had his response.Wojciech Szczesny tripped Marcel Sabitzer to give Austria a penaltyCredit: AFPMarko Arnautovic scored the spot kick to seal the winCredit: AFPA ball cut back across the box found its way to Southampton man Jan Bednarek near the penalty spot. His initial effort was well blocked by Trauner but the rebound fell to Piatek, who kept his head to tuck into the corner from close range.Close shots were traded as Sabitzer fired narrowly wide from distance, before Polish skipper Piotr Zielinski had a fine free-kick saved. It was a case of cometh the hour, cometh the man as Lewandowski was introduced on 60 minutes for his 151st cap.His appearance meant he joined ex-Arsenal stopper Szczesny as the only Polish players ever to play at six major tournaments. The Barcelona forward was instantly booked for catching Austrian centre-back Philipp Lienhart with a stray elbow when battling for a high ball.Szczesny was soon picking his ball out the net again after a clever second from Rangnick’s side.Arnautovic’s clever dummy freed space for RB Leipzig star Baumgartner to pick his spot, which he duly did, before embracing Rangnick with a meaty hug in celebration. Then with 12 minutes to go, the excellent Sabitzer raced in behind the defence and was taken out by Szczesny, who was booked.READ MORE SUN STORIESArnautovic confidently fired home the spot-kick – leaving Lewandowski and Co staring down the barrel.Poland will be eliminated from the Euros if the Dutch fail to beat France tonight.EURO 2024 LIVE: KEEP UP TO DATE WITH ALL THE LATEST NEWS FROM GERMANY More

Why isn’t Kylian Mbappe playing against Netherlands at Euro 2024?

KYLIAN MBAPPE is NOT in France’s starting XI to play Holland tonight at Euro 2024. The France captain is still looking to win his first Euros after disappointment in 2020. Kylian Mbappe was forced off in the game against AustriaCredit: APLes Bleus got things off to the perfect start against Austria, beating them 1-0 thanks to an own goal. It was Mbappe’s cross, however, which was deflected in and the Real Madrid man nearly made it 2-0 in the second half. Mbappe had to come off towards the end of the game, however, and his availability coming into tonight’s game was questioned. Why isn’t Kylian Mbappe playing vs Holland?Mbappe is on the bench tonight and may not come on because he broke his nose against Austria. The 25-year-old collided with Austrian player Kevin Danso late in the game and went down to receive treatment for several minutes. Mbappe’s nose immediately swelled up and blood began to pour down his face and onto his shirt while on the floor. There were fears that Mbappe would need to have an operation but a decision was made not to do so. But he does, however, have to wear a protective face mask, if and when he gets on the pitch. Most read in Euro 2024Mbappe was seen in training with a France flag-coloured mask, but if he does play, he’ll have to wear something plain-coloured instead, according to UEFA’s rules. Mbappe is expected to come back into the French side at some point, but it remains to be seen whether that will be before the knockout rounds. Even though Mbappe is on the bench tonight, there’s every chance he won’t come on as every player who isn’t in the XI but part of the 26-man squad is named on the bench. Last week, Robert Lewandowski was named on the bench for Poland against Holland but didn’t play because of an injury. More

It’s the end of day eight at Euro 2024, and the end of the scoring streak that has seen at least one goal in every game.
Every game that is, until tonight.
France’s 0-0 draw with Netherlands edges the pair closer to the knockout stage – eliminating Poland in the process – but did little to excite football fans watching across Europe.
Still, if you thought England’s lacklustre performance yesterday sparked conversation, it may pale in significance compared to the decisions made by the English officials here.
Referee Anthony Taylor, linesman Adam Nunn and VAR Stuart Atwell combined to rule out a Xavi Simons goal that surely should have stood – and took an age in doing so in the process.
Hopefully, everyone will have calmed down by the time we return tomorrow to cover every kick of three games that include Georgia v Czech Republic, Turkey v Portugal and Belgium v Romania.
    Goodnight.

The BBC punditry team of Alan Shearer, Cesc Fabregas and Wayne Rooney were unanimous in their belief that Xavi Simons’ strike should have stood during the Netherlands’ goalless draw with France.
The goal was ruled out – a decision upheld by VAR – because of an offside against Denzil Dumfries, who was said to blocking the path of France goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

90+2. This game is limping towards its conclusion.
Kante and Weghorst have shots blocked at either end, but neither team are committing men forward at this late stage.

    88. Rabiot breaks free down the left flank! Is this the moment?
The midfielder has Coman charging through the middle, and will pick him out for the winner if he gets the cross right…
IF he gets the cross right.
    IF.
Sigh. He curls it out for a throw-in on the far side instead.

    86. Frenchman Arsene Wenger is spotted in the crowd, having been at the Ukraine v Slovakia game in Dusseldorf earlier today.
He’s getting around more than that England fan who is always front and centre of any party atmosphere.

    84. As William Saliba shows a touch of class on the ball, the Opta nerds have been in touch to tell us that none of the last 50 games at the European Championship have finished goalless since England’s draw with Scotland at Euro 2020.
It’s funny, but living in Glasgow, I’m always led to believe that Scotland won 0-0 that night at Wembley.

The Netherlands players cannot believe, and – I reckon – when they see the replays, their indignation will be that much greater.
    A cruel, controversial moment.

    72. BBC co-commentator Jermaine Jenas is not amused.

Meanwhile, Xavi Simons is close to tears at the thought of his goal being chalked off.

    71. The check is still going on.
The linesman’s flag went up against Denzel Dumfries, who was clearly standing in an offside position.
But the question is was he interfering with Mike Maignan’s ability to get to the ball? He certainly doesn’t seem to be in the goalkeeper’s eyeline.

    69. Against the run of play, Netherlands takes the lead!!
After Memphis Depay’s shot on the turn is blocked by the feet of Mike Maignan, Xavi Simons powers the ball into the net from the edge of the area.
Wild scenes from those in orange, but wait…
    …wait…
…the offside flag is up on the near side!
The Dutch are devastated, but there is a VAR check going on.
    Over to you, Stuart Attwell.

Kante quickly feeds the perfect pass back into the area after the Netherlands had panic-cleared away from Dembele.

Here’s how SunSport’s Tom Barclay rated the Three Lions team.
    Jordan Pickford: 6
Looked a little jittery early doors, though there was nothing he could do about Morten Hjulmand’s corker and he made a decent parry after the break.
    Kyle Walker: 7
Made England’s opener by racing round a sleeping Victor Kristiansen – he’ll be having nightmares of that forevermore – and teeing up Kane via a deflected cross.
    John Stones: 6
OK but you have got to wonder how fit he feels having barely played for Man City in the second half of the season, plus his injury and illness issues over the last month.
Marc Guehi: 8 and my star man
Really encouraging again from the Crystal Palace centre-back, looking sharp with his interceptions and assured in distribution.
    Kieran Trippier: 6
Like Stones, he was fine, but England really need Luke Shaw back ASAP because having no natural left-footer at left-back is a problem.
    Trent Alexander-Arnold: 5
This experiment of playing Trent in midfield is far from convincing, especially when his passing was off it like it was here, barring one good ball to Saka. Subbed on 54 minutes.
    Declan Rice: 5
Had to cover so much ground as England dropped worryingly deep in the first half and also lost it a few times in front of his back four.
    Bukayo Saka: 7
Not quite as electric as his first half against Serbia, but another solid showing from our right winger who has been our most consistent attacker across the two games.
    Jude Bellingham: 6
Nowhere near the majestic display he put in against Serbia and one of many who looked tired.
    Phil Foden: 7
Was far more involved than against Serbia – although that was not hard – and had a few dangerous efforts from range, including one that smacked the post after the break.
    Harry Kane: 6
Netted his 64th goal for his country with an opener he could not really miss, but then gave the ball away from Denmark’s leveller. Surprisingly subbed.
    SUBS:
Conor Gallagher (on for Trent, 54): 7
Vital clearance on the stretch when Christian Eriksen was lurking and was not afraid to put his foot in.
Ollie Watkins (on for Kane, 70): 6
Played in by Bellingham’s lovely ball after coming on but could not finish from an acute angle.
Jarrod Bowen (on for Foden, 69): 6
Copped a nasty tackle which saw Joakim Maehle booked.
Eberechi Eze (on for Saka, 69): 6
On for his tournament bow though he was rarely involved.

‘We’re struggling with and without the ball’, admits Harry Kane
HARRY KANE admits England “haven’t been good enough” at the Euros.
Here’s what skipper Kane said after the disappointing 1-1 draw with Denmark:
“We’re struggling with and without the ball.
“The pressing in both games hasn’t been quite right. We haven’t been good enough, from top to bottom, from me to Picks (Jordan Pickford).
“Everyone is dropping below their level a bit, in terms of retaining the ball, playing under pressure.
“We know there’ll be a bit of noise and disappointment back home.
“But it’s a time to stay calm and we’ll get there step by step.
“It wasn’t our greatest game but we got away with draw.
“We are starting games well. But when the teams are dropping a few players deeper we are not quite sure how to get the pressure on, and who is the one who is supposed to be going.”
“In the second half, we changed it with me and Jude (Bellingham)  playing in front of their two midfielders. But it was difficult.”
