Gary Lineker reveals Alan Shearer had to walk out of the room during England vs Slovakia as pundits slam ‘lost souls’

GARY LINEKER has revealed that Alan Shearer had to leave the room while watching “lost souls” England against Slovakia.Jude Bellingham’s brilliant overhead kick rescued the Three Lions at the death before Harry Kane’s header sealed a 2-1 win in the Euro 2024 last 16 clash on Sunday.Harry Kane’s header sealed England’s comeback against SlovakiaCredit: AFPJude Bellingham had rescued the Three Lions from a humiliating defeatCredit: GettyAlan Shearer walked out of the room as England looked set to be beaten, Gary Lineker saidCredit: PAGareth Southgate’s tactics have been heavily criticisedCredit: GettyJust days ago, BBC footie pundit Lineker called the team’s 1-1 draw against Denmark “s***” in his The Rest is Football podcast.Shearer had also torn into the side after the drab performance and insisted there can be “no excuses” for the ”no energy, no pace” that was displayed. That led to England captain Kane firing back at the pair before the dire 0-0 draw with Slovenia to finish off the group stage. However, despite advancing to set-up a quarter final clash with Switzerland on Saturday, things failed to improve much in terms of entertainment or attacking threat yesterday.READ MORE ON EURO 2024Bellingham’s equaliser in the fifth minute of stoppage time was the first shot on target with Kane’s effort being the only other effort. And England legend Lineker introduced the latest edition The Rest Is Football by revealing how Shearer’s frustration got the best of him as the Three Lions looked set to make a humiliating exit.Lineker, 63, said: “Not at one point did I think England wouldn’t win that game. Late, late drama, of course. And England, I think it’s fair to say, scraped through against Slovakia in the round of 16.“I don’t think any of us really expected what we saw, to be perfectly honest. It’s true, isn’t it?”Watch fuming England fans storm out of Slovakia game early and launch X-rated rant at Southgate BEFORE epic comebackShearer explained: “I was just, it was just desperation. I mean, it was, it was desperate. They were so bad, it was untrue.“I mean, I was thinking Iceland 2016, was it? Yeah. 2016 all over again, with much better players.“It was that bad. England were offering nothing, nothing at all. And I just couldn’t see where it was going to come from. And then, a piece of brilliance.”Lineker then stated that England’s players looked like “lost souls” playing Southgate’s “alien tactics”.Shearer firstly said: “It’s not a good watch. England route to the final at Euro 2024: How Three Lions could reach July 14 final

ENGLAND beat Slovakia on Sunday night to set up a quarter-final clash with Switzerland. The Three Lions will now be dreaming of reaching the showpiece final on July 14, having lucked out by being placed on the ‘easier’ side of the draw.England face Switzerland in the quarter-finals – and have an ‘easier’ route to the final than other top nationsCredit: AlamyEngland will NOT play any of France, Belgium, Portugal, Spain or Germany before the final. The strongest team on their side of the draw – according to Fifa rankings at least – is the Netherlands, who are currently ranked No 7 in the world.Who do England play next at Euro 2024?England next play Switzerland in the quarter-final stage – the match kicks off at 5pm on Saturday, July 6 in Dusseldorf.Switzerland have been one of the teams of the tournament so far and getting past them on Saturday will be no easy feat. They impressed in their opening game against Hungary, a 3-1 win before a scrappy 1-1 draw with Scotland. They then outplayed Germany in the final group game, with the hosts needing a 92nd-minute Niclas Fullkrug goal to save a 1-1 draw.In the last 16, Switzerland put on one of the best performances of the last two weeks, dominating Italy in a 2-0 win.England, meanwhile, laboured through the group stage – scoring just two goals in three matches – before being on the brink of an exit to Slovakia. Most read in Euro 2024Jude Bellingham saved the Three Lions with an audacious overhead kick deep into stoppage time, before Harry Kane scored early in extra-time in an uninspiring 2-1 win.Gareth Southgate now has huge questions to answer given the performance of his starting XI for 95 minutes.Marc Guehi will definitely miss the game, having picked up an early yellow card, but Southgate has question marks throughout his side.Kieran Trippier, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka and even Harry Kane appear at varying levels of risk of being dropped.Especially as the likes of Cole Palmer, Ivan Toney and Eberechi Eze impressed after they came on. Fans convinced Jude Bellingham’s dramatic equaliser was carbon copy of Pele’s goal in Escape to Victory

FOOTBALL fans have been left convinced that Jude Bellingham’s stunning last-gasp equaliser was something out of Hollywood.Bellingham netted a 95th minute equaliser for England to book them a spot in extra-time against Slovakia, where Harry Kane’s header then proved to be the difference maker to hand the Three Lions a 2-1 win.Jude Bellingham netted a stunning overhead kick against SlovakiaCredit: GettyFans were convinced it was a copy of an iconic sport moviePele scored an overhead in 1981 film Escape to VictoryThe hard-earned victory papered over the cracks of the performance. However, one fan noticed a striking similarity between Bellingham’s overhead kick and one produced in a movie more than 40 years ago.The fan shared a famous clip from the 1981 film, Escape to Victory, which showed Allied World War Two prisoners of war playing an exhibition match against a German team. The sports film starred a number of former professional footballers including Bobby Moore, Osvaldo Ardiles, Kazimierz Deyna, Paul Van Himst, Mike Summerbee, Hallvar Thoresen, Werner Roth and Pele.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLThe film also had some major names in the world of acting, with Michael Caine, Max von Sydow and Sylvester Stallone among the star-studded cast.In one scene, a cross is floated in towards Pele, who – accompanied by some slow motion camera work and dramatic music – then scores with a bicycle kick.Fans could not help but compare the goal to Bellingham’s own goal, with one saying: “Escape to Victory. Belgium, on the other hand, lost a chaotic match to Slovakia, beat Romania, and drew 0-0 against Ukraine.Neither team has shown their full potential in this competition so far and will be eager to make a statement, especially with a likely quarter-final match against Portugal looming.EURO 2024 FREE BETS AND OFFERSHistorically, Belgium have a better overall record against France, but recent encounters have favoured Les Bleus. France defeated Belgium 1-0 in the 2018 FIFA World Cup semi-final and won 3-2 in a UEFA Nations League semi-final in 2021.Despite their struggles, Belgium rank joint-third for most efforts on target in the competition and have lost only one of their last 18 international matches. Both teams are also strong defensively, with France conceding just three goals in eight qualification matches and Belgium close behind with four.Combined, they have achieved eight shutouts in their last ten games. We could be set for another nervy last-16 encounter in Dusseldorf, folks.France vs Belgium: Free betting tips, odds and predictions for Euro 2024 clashCredit: THE SUNFrance vs Belgium oddsOdds are correct at the time of publication and are subject to change.France vs Belgium betting tipsAllez Les Bleus! It’s tough to bet against France, and their Evens odds to win inside 90 minutes with William Hill are tempting.Didier Deschamps’ team has reached the final in three of the last four World Cup and European Championships, winning all four previous major tournament matches against Belgium.France have only conceded once, from a re-taken penalty due to Mike Maignan stepping off his line. They also boast the highest xG among last-16 teams and have more touches in the opposition penalty area than any other side in the tournament.France to win in 90 minutes at Evens with William Hill – CLAIM HEREKylian themFrance manager Didier Deschamps is poised to implement a new 4-4-2 diamond formation for tonight’s match.Despite creating numerous chances, France have yet to score from open play in the competition. Deschamps hopes this tactical change will better utilise players like Marcus Thuram and Antoine Griezmann. But the main beneficiary is expected to be Kylian Mbappe, who has had six shots on target at Euro 2024, trailing only Kai Havertz and Romelu Lukaku. With both teams known for their strong defences, the match could have limited opportunities. However, Mbappe, who has scored 48 goals in 81 appearances for France, is likely to capitalise on any chances. He is also the designated penalty taker and scored from the spot in his last head-to-head encounter against Belgium.Kylian Mbappe first goalscorer at 7/2 with William Hill – CLAIM HEREOffsideBelgium manager Domenico Tedesco is expected to stick with striker Romelu Lukaku for tonight’s crucial match. The Belgian star has had a frustrating tournament, with three goals disallowed by VAR, twice for offside.Lukaku, who has scored 85 goals for Belgium, will face a tough challenge against France’s centre-backs William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano, who are both blessed with pace.Belgium are anticipated to adopt a deep defensive stance, and that could result in numerous long passes aimed at Lukaku – increasing the likelihood of the 31-year-old being caught offside.Romelu Lukaku Over 1 Offside at 3/1 with William Hill – CLAIM HERERemember to gamble responsiblyA responsible gambler is someone who:Establishes time and monetary limits before playingOnly gambles with money they can afford to loseNever chase their lossesDoesn’t gamble if they’re upset, angry or depressedGamcare – www.gamcare.org.ukGamble Aware – www.gambleaware.orgFor help with a gambling problem, call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 or go to www.gamstop.co.uk *Ladbrokes. 18+ New UK+IRE Customers only. Three ways England could line up against Switzerland as key man suspended and Southgate forced into tactical tweak

GARETH SOUTHGATE will be forced into at least one change for England’s Euro 2024 quarter-final – but could make a handful.Impressive performances from the substitutes against Slovakia in Sunday evening’s thrilling comeback could make the boss rethink the way he wants to set up against Switzerland.Gareth Southgate has plenty to think about ahead of England’s clash with SwitzerlandCredit: GettyJude Bellingham’s spectacular overhead kick helped spare England’s blushes against SlovakiaCredit: EPAEngland advanced into the next round in dramatic fashion after Jude Bellingham’s acrobatic finish levelled the scores in the dying embers of added time.Southgate tinkered with his system in extra time to force a winning goal, playing two up top with Ivan Toney partnering Harry Kane. And his gamble worked as Kane nodded home the crucial goal to make it 2-1 off the back of a Toney assist. There were also positive substitute cameos from Ezri Konsa, Eberechi Eze and Cole Palmer.READ MORE ON ENGLANDHowever, there were some blows to Southgate’s plans too as suspensions, and potentially injuries, could hamper England’s chances against the Swiss.Marc Guehi, arguably England’s best player at the tournament so far, picked up his second yellow card in Germany and will subsequently miss the Switzerland clash through suspension. And Kieran Tripper limped off the Gelsenkirchen pitch in 66th minute, raising concerns over an injury. Here’s three ways that Southgate could chop and change his side for Saturday’s quarter-final…Most read in Euro 2024Marc Guehi will miss the quarter-final through suspensionCredit: GettyKieran Trippier is a doubt for the Switzerland game through injuryCredit: GettyEURO 2024 FREE BETS AND OFFERSIF IT AIN’T BROKEMost England fans would suggest that the way the Three Lions have been playing isn’t good enough. But regardless of the style, England have done their job and advanced to the quarter-finals.England vs Slovakia player ratingsSouthgate has been stubborn with his lineups before and should Kieran Tripper be fit to play, then it’s likely that he will make just one change to his starting lineup against Switzerland.Guehi has to come out of the squad and the most likely replacement for him in central defence is Aston Villa star Ezri Konsa after he picked up his first minutes of the tournament – something Joe Gomez and Lewis Dunk are yet to taste.Konsa looked assured when he came on against Slovakia and could occupy the left central position with ease, having played there – as well as right-back, at times – under Unai Emery last season.Of course, Southgate would have to hope that Trippier passes a fitness test for this lineup.Ezri Konsa will likely come in for GuehiCredit: PASET THE TONEToney was arguably one of England’s best performers last night, despite playing just over 30 minutes of football. The Brentford bagsman won three free-kicks and set up a goal in his short cameo. While he was on the pitch he shared the spotlight with captain Kane, and Southgate may look at a way of getting both stars on the field at the same time for the full 90.A back five could facilitate that as an option with England using wing-backs to provide width instead of out-and-out wingers. The best of England vs SlovakiaCHECK out all the best action from England’s rollercoaster Euro 2024 last-16 win over Slovakia.Obviously this would mean England lose out on having Foden and Saka on the pitch, but it would allow for more direct goal-scoring threat with two strikers up top.Playing with a five would also allow the Three Lions to re-introduce Trent Alexander-Arnold to the fold – utilising his long balls to find Toney and Kane in the box.Luke Shaw would be the perfect fit on the left side, but if he isn’t fit enough to start then Tripper could also play that role.Should Tripper also be injured, England can gamble on playing Saka at left wing-back to add even more attacking threat, as he did for a chunk of the win over Slovakia. It’s worth noting that Switzerland play a back five themselves and matching them man-for-man might not be the worst idea.Luke Shaw is back in full training for England, but is yet to feature at Euro 2024Credit: AlamyKEEP PALM AND CARRY ONOne final option for England would be to swap out the wide men but keep the back four.Fans have been clamouring for Cole Palmer to start at this tournament and the Chelsea wonderkid could replace Saka on the right hand side.Another quiet night for Foden could see Southgate take a chance on Anthony Gordon on the left wing after his promising, albeit short, cameo against Slovenia.Kobbie Mainoo seems guaranteed to keep his spot next to Declan Rice after he impressed from the off last night.Southgate may have to think about who he plays at left-back for this lineup if both Tripper and Shaw are absent.READ MORE SUN STORIESIn a back four it would most likely mean Konsa comes in for Guehi at left centre-back and Gomez plays as a more defensive left-back.Gomez’s defensive tendencies would give even more reason to play a more direct winger ahead of him in Gordon.Fans are keen to see Cole Palmer start for EnglandCredit: PAJoe Gomez could come into the squad at left-backCredit: Rex More
