Lee Carsley ready to banish host of regular England stars in first Three Lions squad – but Ben White to remain in exile

LEE CARSLEY is promising changes for his first England squad – but Ben White is poised to remain in exile. The interim boss wants to put his “own stamp” on the Three Lions after Gareth Southgate departed following Euro 2024 final woe against Spain.Temporary chief Lee Carsley is likely to bring in some U-21 heroesCredit: GettyKieran Trippier is one of several senior players whose future is in doubtCredit: RexBen White has not spoken to Carsley since his appointmentCredit: GettyThe start of a new chapter in English football, which could be incredibly brief or last for years, will begin at St George’s Park on Thursday afternoon. But although Carsley will usher out some of the old squad there’s no sign of a new start for White. The Arsenal defender has not spoken to the 50-year-old nor indicated that he will make himself available to play for the Three Lions. And do not expect half of the  summer squad to have a knife plunged into their backs by Carsley.READ MORE TOP STORIESHowever, he will still show some players the international exit door while welcoming new faces to the senior set-up.Carsley has stepped up from the Under-21s on a temporary basis for  Uefa Nations League games against Ireland and Finland. He insisted: “It’s important that we put our own stamp on the squad.”After eight years under Southgate, Carsley must be determined to prove he is very much his own man and will want to make some clear changes. Most read in FootballVilla’s Morgan Rogers is one of the youngsters pressing for a placeCredit: GettyFOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALSWhile he might officially be a temporary boss, Carsley will  treat this like a permanent job — and  be planning with the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada and  Mexico firmly in his mind.Carsley oversaw England’s first U-21 Euros title in 39 years in Georgia last summer, so expect some of those younger players to earn call-ups.Former England and Prem star Andros Townsend admits ‘I don’t know who owns me’ as freak hold-up wrecks move to TurkeyNewcastle full-back Tino Livramento is also in contentionCredit: RexYet the big decisions will be which senior players to axe. Here is a squad with some supremely-gifted individual players — but the England team is in no way perfect. It does have weaknesses, as we saw during the summer in Germany.Kieran Trippier did not enjoy a good Euros, even though he was being played out of position at left-back, and the season has not started well for him at Newcastle. He is at risk of being dropped.Kyle Walker was talked out of quitting after Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup by Southgate and will be 36 by the time of  the next global tournament. Again, Carsley has a decision to make.Jack Grealish, who missed out on the Euros squad having featured little at the end of last season for Manchester City, has only played 19 minutes this season, against Prem new-boys Ipswich.Striker Ivan Toney, although part of the Euro 2024 squad, will also be sweating — and might not help his chances if he moves from   Brentford to Saudi Arabia.Ben Chilwell is not wanted by Chelsea so will presumably not be considered by Carsley. And Marcus Rashford also seems set to remain out of the picture, although his Manchester United team-mate Harry Maguire — who missed the Euros  through injury — looks certain to be included. As for younger players, Carsley, loves Newcastle full-back Tino Livramento, 21, who is a strong bet for inclusion. Man City’s Rico Lewis is expected to be includedCredit: AlamyMan Utd striker Marcus Rashford is likely to be left out once moreCredit: GettyRico Lewis, 19, has started well with champions City and it would be a surprise if he is not selected.Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest are also in contention.Liverpool’s Curtis Jones, who scored the winner against Spain Under-21s in July’s final, would normally have been included but is struggling with an injury — as is Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite.FA chief exec Mark Bullingham says he is continuing the recruitment search for a new boss.Yet if England win in Ireland a week on Saturday and against Finland three days later – then do the same in October’s Nation League clashes with Greece and   Finland – the solution will be right under the FA’s noses. In contrast, there is still no answer in sight over the future of White. He returned home during the World Cup in 2022 due to personal reasons. And in Qatar there was tension between White and assistant boss Steve Holland. But there were also other factors which led to him deciding to return to England.READ MORE SUN STORIESCarsley, who turned down the Ireland job last year, will have Ashley Cole as his assistant. Joleon Lescott and Tim Dittmer, the FA’s head of coaching, will also be part of the temporary backroom team.Forest attacker Morgan Gibbs-White has put himself in the pictureCredit: Rex More

How former teacher Sven-Goran Eriksson became ice cool England hero and unlikely playboy – before tragic cancer battle

THE scoreline still makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end: Germany 1, England 5.In the dugout, masterminding the demolition of the old sporting enemy that day, was a thoughtful Swede who stayed ice cool amid the pandemonium around him.Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has died aged 76Credit: ReutersSven with Italian former girlfriend Nancy Dell’OlioCredit: Rex FeaturesEngland’s first foreign manager, Sven-Goran Eriksson, seemed like nothing would ruffle him.Few would have guessed — from his owlish exterior at least — that away from the football pitch he led such a tumultuous personal life. That crazy night in Munich in 2001, now part of English footballing folklore, proved something of a high watermark for Sven and his Golden Generation of players. His three international tournaments with England all ended at the quarter-finals.READ MORE ON FOOTBALLBroken metatarsals, bodged penalties and a Ronaldinho free kick that looked to be a mis-hit denied him sporting immortality. And his time as Three Lions coach will be remembered as much for his shenanigans off the pitch as his successes on it.With receding grey hair, rimless specs and a demeanour seemingly as chilly as a Scandinavian fjord, he didn’t seem like a ladies’ man.Yet appearances were very deceptive. Most read in FootballHis glam Italian former girlfriend Nancy Dell’Olio wrote breathlessly of their first meeting: “The attraction was electric before we touched — but one touch was all it took.”And there were affairs with Britain’s other famous Swede Ulrika Jonsson and FA secretary Faria Alam — both while he was still dating Nancy.Elk huntingSven, who has died of pancreatic cancer aged 76, landed the Three Lions job after Kevin Keegan quit the post after England lost 1-0 to Germany in October 2000. David Beckham shares heartbreaking tribute video after tragic death of former England manager Sven-Goran ErikssonTerry Venables — who had guided England to the Euro 96 semi-final — was overlooked. Instead, the FA chose Sven, who had won Italy’s Serie A with Lazio but was largely unknown in Britain. The elevation of a foreigner to the top job in the motherland of football was not welcomed by all.One leading sports writer complained that England had “sold our birthright” to a “nation of seven million skiers and hammer throwers who spend half their lives in darkness”.When Eriksson’s name was announced, I was dispatched by The Sun to his remote home village of Torsby, set in thick pine forest not far from Sweden’s border with Norway. Many of the 4,000-odd inhabitants of the village, where temperatures can drop to -30C, were as well versed in elk hunting as they were in football. Some said that, away from footie, Sven enjoyed Tibetan poetry and tennis — quite a departure from the usual lifestyle of the English game.Known as Svennis in Torsby, the truck driver’s son had worked as a sports teacher before a short-lived career as a pro footballer.A solid, right-footed defender for teams in Sweden’s lower leagues, Sven was forced to retire in 1975 after an injury, aged just 27.After the appointment of Tord Grip — one of his old managers and later his No2 at England — at part-timers Degerfors in Sweden’s third division, he asked Sven to be his assistant. The pair aped the English game, playing 4-4-2 formations. When Grip took over as boss of the Swedish national team, Sven was given the Degerfors top job.A boyhood Liverpool fan, he later said: “I was always drawn to the physical strength and commitment of the English game. It was my model in the early days in Sweden.”In March this year he achieved a life-long dream when he was invited to Liverpool’s Anfield ground to manage the club’s Legends veterans for a day, and led the side to a 4-2 win against Ajax Legends. At Degerfors he brought in a sports psychologist and the side won promotion. He was on his way.In 1979, when he was just 30, Swedish giants Gothenburg gave him the manager’s job, and three years later they won the Uefa Cup.In 1982 he left his homeland for successful stints at Benfica in Portugal — twice — plus Italian sides Roma, Fiorentina and Lazio, before securing the England job.In 1977 he had married Ann-Christine Pettersson, daughter of the principal of a teacher-training college where he had been a student. They had two children, Lina, now a charity worker, and Johan, a football agent. The couple divorced in 1994, then in 1998, while at Lazio, Sven was introduced to a raven-haired Italian with a taste in plunging necklines. The Swede was a boyhood Liverpool fanCredit: Sunday TimesA young Sven Goran Eriksson in uniformCredit: Nina PerssonMarried lawyer Nancy Dell’Olio later recalled her first impression when she met Sven at a Tuscan spa resort was that he appeared “quite distinguished but nothing special”.She added: “Later he told me that he was completely transfixed from the first moment he saw me.”Sven invited her to lunch and Nancy later said she had “hated” deceiving her husband Gianfranco, also a lawyer and a friend of Sven’s.Eventually Sven asked her to leave her husband, and they broke the news to Gianfranco together. At Christmas 1999 Sven produced “a beautiful diamond engagement ring” and they seemed set for a happy marriage.Yet Nancy later wrote in her life story My Beautiful Game: “Little did I know that even stormier waters were lying just ahead.”England had come calling for Sven in October 2000.He was one of world football’s sharpest and most decorated managers, with the BBC calling him “the man with the Midas touch”.Sven said of what has been called an impossible job: “All England managers have been declared idiots at some times in their career, even Sir Alf Ramsey.England’s ‘first lady’“I knew what to expect. I didn’t take the job for the money or the weather. I took it because it’s England.”He and Nancy moved into a luxury home overlooking London’s Regent’s Park and she later described herself as “the first lady of English football”.His first game in charge — a friendly against Spain at Villa Park in February 2001 — saw England win 3-0.Victories against Finland, Albania, Mexico and Greece followed, with Sven the first England manager to win his first five games. Then, on September 1, 2001, came a far greater challenge — the might of Germany in a World Cup qualifier at the Olympic Stadium in Munich. The Germans had only ever lost one World Cup qualifier at home.Since losing to England in the 1966 final, they had beaten the Three Lions at tournaments in 1970, 1990 and 1996.Yet Sven’s England destroyed them, with the fifth goal scored by Liverpool’s Emile Heskey, who had a reputation for being goal shy.To this day England fans still chant to the tune of the Village People’s Go West: “5-1 — even Heskey scored.”Then automatic qualification for the 2002 World Cup was secured ahead of Germany with a 2-2 draw with Greece at Old Trafford.Yet in April 2002, with the World Cup just weeks away, came news that left many flabbergasted.Sven had been having an affair behind Nancy’s back with Ulrika Jonsson, who was 19 years his junior. But the TV presenter later said: “This was no great passionate affair.“It was devoid of passion. He had all this power and money, yet he was the weakest man I have ever met.”The pair had met when she had asked for his autograph at a party thrown by Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell. It was devoid of passion. He had all this power and money, yet he was the weakest man I have ever metUlrika on SvenUlrika added: “When news of our affair broke he didn’t confirm what went on between us.“This meant I was left high and dry, even to the point that people believed I had made it up to get Press attention. That really angered me.”Yet Nancy stayed with Sven, despite the affair.Ulrika added: “I sensed he feared her. He admitted to me that she loved the attention she was getting from the media, so it’s little wonder if she didn’t want to give that up.”In the group stage of the 2002 World Cup England beat Argentina — in one of international football’s biggest grudge matches. In the quarter final against Brazil England scored first, then Brazil equalised in injury time.SGE played for Swedish division III team SK SifhallaCredit: Pressens BildWhen Sven was just 30, Swedish giants Gothenburg offered him the manager’s jobCredit: EmpicsGareth Southgate — then a player — allegedly said of Sven’s half-time talk: “We needed Winston Churchill but got Iain Duncan Smith [referring to the “quiet man” former Tory leader].As Sven stood on impassively in the second half, Brazil won it with a fluke free kick from Ronaldinho that wrong-footed goalie David Seaman. It was best summed up with what became a Sven catchphrase: “First half good, second half not so good.”Perhaps the most glorious missed chance for Sven and English football was Euro 2004 in Portugal, when teen sensation Wayne Rooney limped off with a cracked metatarsal in the quarter-final with the host nation.England went on to lose on penalties. That year Sven had a fling with another far younger woman — ex-model Faria Alam, an FA secretary. She later said: “After he’d filled the dishwasher, he led me upstairs to his bedroom. He didn’t have the mindset of a super-rich man.“He was saying how he did yoga and things like that. And I just fell in love with him, I guess.”Sven with ex wife Ann-Christine and son Johan in 1980Credit: Pressens BildMatters were complicated by the fact that Faria had also had a fling with FA chief executive Mark Palios.Yet again, Nancy stayed with Sven, who later admitted there were other lovers, including a singer, a Romanian ex-gymnast and a Swedish employee of Scandinavian Airlines. In January 2006 it was announced he would leave his £4.5million-a-year job after that summer’s World Cup.The tournament again ended in failure at the quarter-finals and will largely be remembered for Sven perhaps wisely allowing the Wags to grab centre stage. But his record of 40 wins and 17 draws in 67 fixtures was not matched by his successors until Gareth Southgate’s reign.Don’t be sorry, smile. Here we take a look.THE HIGHS:Colombia 1-1 England (3-4 on pens,) 2018 World CupThis was the night that long-suffering supporters finally started to believe that it was coming home.Despite conceding a late equaliser, England held their nerve to advance to the quarter final of the World Cup 2018 on penalties. It was our first shootout victory for 22 years.Spain 2-3 England, 2018 Nations LeagueFollowing on from the World Cup, England won in Spain for the first time in 31 years with a brilliant Uefa Nations League victory.Southgate’s boys stunned the Seville crowd into silence with a thrilling performance that saw them lead 3-0 at the break thanks to a Raheem Sterling brace and Marcus Rashford.Although the hosts scored two after the break, the way the Three Lions tore La Roja apart excited every fan.England 2-1 Denmark, Euro 2020 semi-finalSouthgate led England to their first major final in 55 years as they beat Denmark after extra-time in the Euro 2020 semi-final.Having fallen behind after half an hour, the Three Lions battled back to send it to extra-time courtesy of an own goal. Then it was captain Kane who converted a rebound after Kasper Schmeichel originally they breezed past Senegal. The free-scoring Three Lions recorded another big win to set-up a mouthwatering quarter-final against France – what could go wrong?Italy 1-2 England, Euro qualifiers, 2023On a night when Harry Kane became England’s all-time top scorer, the Three Lions recorded a first away win over Italy since 1961.It was the first game since their 2022 World Cup exit, and it ensured a perfect start to their Euro 2022 qualifying campaign.England 2-1 Holland, Euro 2024 sem-finalThe nation doubted Southgate’s men in the semis of Euro 2024, but they responded with a barnstorming display.Xavi Simons opened the scoring for the Dutch but Harry Kane’s penalty drew us level. And Ollie Watkins slotted in a brilliant winner in injury time to see the Three Lions into their second successive Euros final.AND THE LOWS….Croatia 2-1 England, World Cup semi-final, 2018Having led England to a first World Cup semi-final since 1990, Southgate men made a dream start as Kieran Trippier put them ahead in the early exchanges. But Ivan Perisic equalised as the Croats began to take control. Some of Southgate’s substitutions were then questioned after his team were beaten in extra-time, although many gave him the benefit of the doubt as he returned a hero.Italy 1-1 England (3-2 pens) Euro 2020 finalWill probably never get a better chance to have secured a trophy for the Three Lions than this final of the last European Championship.Luke Shaw gave us the lead after just seconds, but just like against Croatia three years earlier, we sat back and let our rivals back into it.Leonardo Bonucci duly equalised in the second half and the game eventually went to penalties. The unfortunate Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were all brought on to take a spot-kick, but the brave trio all missed as the Azzurri broke our hearts to take the prize.England 0-4 Hungary, Nations League 2023A year on from the Euros and it was utter embarrassment for Southgate in this Nations League game at Molineux. It was our biggest home defeat since 1928 and the result led to England being relegated from the top group of the Nations League and back to one that contained the Republic of Ireland, Finland and Greece.England 1-2 France, World Cup 2022 quarter-finalsAnother case of what could have been.Having been free-scoring throughout Qatar 2022, many fancied us to go all the way at the World Cup despite taking on the holders in the quarters. We fought back from going behind to level through Kane and many believe that France were then there for the taking had Southgate deployed a more attacking approach.Instead, they seemed content with what they had until Olivier Giroud pounced 12 minutes from time to win it.But there was still one more twist of the knife for England as the usually-reliable Kane skied a late penalty over the bar uncharacteristically as we crashed out.Carsley may well be in the frame if he impresses during his temporary stint.Eddie Howe and Graham Potter both remain in contention while Harry Redknapp wants either Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard to get the gig.Teddy Sheringham, though, wants to see the FA “break the bank” and go all out to land Pep Guardiola at the end of the season, when his current Manchester City deal expires.Sheringham said: “If England want to take the last step and win a major trophy, if they want to go one step further from where Gareth – who was phenomenal – has taken us, then you have to look at Pep Guardiola.”Go out and have the ambition to get him, paying him whatever it takes to get involved.READ the respect of the footballing world.Spain proved a last-gasp comeback too far in Berlin, but defeat did not change the fact that Southgate’s eight-year transformation put respect back into the world of England football.Critics will pick apart his cautious tactics, his selection choices and his record in the most high-pressurised games – with some legitimacy.Yet what is quickly forgotten is the laughing stock our national side had become before he took over in 2016.A shambolic Euros exit to Iceland that summer had been followed up by Sam Allardyce quitting just one game into his tenure thanks to his pint of wine with undercover reporters. Then came Southgate, with his decency, his humility, his understated eloquence and his vision for a better, different future. He had analysed why England had so often failed in the past, from lack of preparation at penalty shoot-outs to players being bored out of their minds during major tournaments.Southgate took those findings and implemented a culture where players wanted to play for their country again – and it led to back-to-back finals for the first time in our history.Instead of going to war with the media, he opened his doors to them and discovered, shock, horror, that it was met, generally, with support. It did not stop him from being criticised when required – we are no cheerleaders, here – but the vitriol of yesteryear – or today on social media – was largely gone.No manager is perfect and neither was Southgate. We cannot pretend his teams played like those of Pep Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp. But in the fullness of time, his feats will likely be revered because the results speak for themselves.Hopefully his successor can go one step further and bring football home. To do that, they must show respect to what Southgate has created and build on it, rather than rip it down.To read more from Tom Barclay click HERE. James Maddison shows his class with message to Gareth Southgate after Spurs star was left out of Euro 2024 squad

JAMES MADDISON says he could never hate Gareth Southgate.Even though he broke his heart by leaving him out of England’s Euro ’24 squad this summer.James Maddison insists there is no bad blood between him and Gareth SouthgateCredit: GettySouthgate left Maddison out of his 26-man Euro 2024 squadCredit: AlamyInstead, Maddison intends to harness the searing pain of that rejection to fuel his anger and frustration at being snubbed by his nation. And use it to inspire him to reach greater heights than ever before this season.”I was devastated to miss out on the Euros,” confessed the straight-talking Spurs midfielder in his first interview since England lost to Spain in the final… without him.At 27, Maddison was in his prime, yet he was one of three high-profile shock omissions from Southgate’s 26-man squad when he named it in June – along with Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire.Read More in FootballIt’s taken time for the hurt to heal.”I trained really well in the build up. I trained well with England as well,” Maddison revealed.”We had the warm-up game against North Macedonia and I felt I played well in that, so it was disappointing to miss out.”But you’ve got no choice other than to accept it because you can’t change it, once it’s happened. Most read in FootballFOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALSSouthgate’s England legacy should be celebrated, not torn downBy Tom BarclayGareth Southgate claimed that only winning Sunday’s final would earn England the respect of the footballing world.Spain proved a last-gasp comeback too far in Berlin, but defeat did not change the fact that Southgate’s eight-year transformation put respect back into the world of England football.Critics will pick apart his cautious tactics, his selection choices and his record in the most high-pressurised games – with some legitimacy.Yet what is quickly forgotten is the laughing stock our national side had become before he took over in 2016.A shambolic Euros exit to Iceland that summer had been followed up by Sam Allardyce quitting just one game into his tenure thanks to his pint of wine with undercover reporters. He explained his reasoning. It was never personal. The Sun’s Shaun Custis and Charlie Wyett discuss Gareth Southgate quitting as England manager and who could replace him”He’s a good person. We have a great relationship.”I messaged him not long ago to congratulate him on his managerial career with England.”There’s no hatred towards him.”I knew it was a business decision and he did what he thought was best for the team.”I didn’t agree with him – no doubt about that – I felt I could have bought something to the squad.”Maddison says it took some fatherly advice from his dad to help him deal with the bitter disappointment – and admits he has a point to prove this season.”Of course I have something to prove,” he said.”Setbacks are set-ups for comebacks. I’ve seen that quote somewhere.”It’s how you deal with adversity. My network around me, my parents, partner, agent, the manager – they wouldn’t let me dwell on it.”I knew I would come back with a hunger. I knew I’d be ready by game one to have a good season.”I want to show the gaffer, the fans, my team-mates that I can be back consistently to my best.”I couldn’t quite find that post-injury. But it’s always about how you respond.”My support network – and my dad especially – would never let that define me.”Dad would never let me be upset. Even though he was upset for me, like any parent would be.”He was hungry for the new season and I’m hungry to do well this season.”He wanted me to use my disappointment as motivation to remind me that I can and should be at that level.”It’s about using it as fuel to be good for Tottenham this season.”I’m desperate to be a top player for the whole season, stay fit and show everyone the best version of myself.”For 45 minutes against his old club Leicester City on Monday night, Maddison showed the watching world what England had been missing in the summer. He found pockets of space between the lines and tormented the Foxes defence with his clever flicks and laser-accurate crosses.Maddison has just started his second season with SpursCredit: GettySouthgate’s England recordHere is a look at Gareth Southgate’s record as England manager.Overall recordGames: 102Wins: 61Draws: 24Losses: 17Goals scored: 213Goals conceded: 72After 33 minutes he shared a knowing look with Brennan Johnson before a free-kick.Then as Leicester’s players braced themselves for a shot at goal – Maddison picked Johnson out at the back post with a delicate disguised cross which the winger volleyed inches wide.”I never ever doubt myself,” he said.”There’s always going to be outside noise. Every player has to deal with it.”I had no doubt that in the first game of the season I was going to be ready to go and put in a good performance. I felt like I did that.”I did some of the build-up stuff well, maybe I could have been a bit more clinical with the final pass if I’m being harsh on myself. But I’m always self-critical.”Pre-season is pre-season but when the Premier League comes and the big games and it’s furious, it’s a completely different ball-game.”But that’s where I thrive and I knew I was ready. I’m just disappointed we didn’t get three points.”We should have been three or four up in the first half. If we were a little bit more ruthless we could have been out of sight.”But I know this place better than anyone. When they get a little bit of momentum, the fans here get behind the team.”We didn’t have as much control over the second half. But we should be getting three points at places like this.”It’s Tottenham Hotspur, no disrespect to Leicester, of course, but they are a newly-promoted team.”We’re a big club, what we want to achieve and what we are striving for, we need to come away with three points.”The fact that Spurs couldn’t seal the deal will be seen by many as further proof that Ange Postecoglou’s men are too flaky to mount a serious challenge.Maddison disputes that analysis and said: “The only important messages we need to listen to are the manager’s. We know what we are capable of.”Nights like this, you lot in the media will get carried away about Spurs dropping points from winning positions but it’s all outside noise.READ MORE SUN STORIES”It’s about what we do within the walls of the training ground and our stadium.”It’s about blocking you all out to get to what we want to achieve.” More
