Switzerland went behind against Spain but a second-half leveller sent the match to extra time.
And at the half-way break during the added 30 minutes, Xhaka gathered his Swiss teammates round for a group huddle.
Cameras picked up the Roma transfer target giving an inspired speech to his fired-up pals, with the passion clear to see on his face.
Whatever Xhaka said clearly got the Swiss going as they ended the huddle with a huge roar before giving their suspended teammate a huge pat on the chest.
Viewers were clearly impressed as they took to Twitter praising the Gunners star.
One beamed: “Granit Xhaka even leading the team off the pitch!”
Another wrote: “Xhaka will be an elite manager.”
One tweeted: “Xhaka increasing his value even though he’s not playing.”

Another added: “Xhaka is a better coach than the one at his club.”
Unfortunately for Xhaka, he could only watch as Switzerland missed three consecutive penalties in the shootout to miss out on the semis.
But the midfield star can now look forward to his impending Roma transfer.
Jose Mourinho is eager to sign Xhaka from Arsenal, and a deal reportedly worth £15million is in the works.

Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Jack Grealish, Declan Rice and Mason Mount – as well as boss Southgate – looked in relaxed mood as they boarded the plan on Friday afternoon.
They were then seen checking into a hotel in Rome ahead of the huge match.
England booked their place in the last-eight with a convincing 2-0 victory over Germany on Tuesday evening.
Gareth Southgate has been left scratching his head with a plethora of selection dilemmas to mull over.
But on Friday he had a fully-fit and available 26-man group to work with in training.
The likes of captain Kane and centre-back Harry Maguire were spotted grinning throughout the session, with Southgate also beaming.
After their afternoon’s work was done, the Three Lions players hopped on the team bus and made their way to the airport.
After landing in the Eternal City this evening, England will want a good night’s sleep before having one final training session on Saturday morning at the Stadio Olimpico.

Southgate and Co take on Andriy Shevchenko’s Ukraine with kick-off at 8pm.
The England boss still has a number of things to consider going into the massive game.
The first conundrum surrounds the formation, with Southgate opting for a flexible 3-4-3 / 5-2-3 to combat Germany’s wing-backs in the last 16.
But the boss will likely revert to a back-four for Ukraine in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.
With FOUR players currently on a yellow card, Southgate may consider resting a handful of stars to avoid any suspensions before the semi-final stage, when previous bookings are wiped out.
Maguire, Rice, Kalvin Phillips and Phil Foden all currently have one yellow card to their name apiece.
Jordan Henderson and Mason Mount are likely to come in for Rice and Phillips – who has started every game.

And Jack Grealish could start in a No10 role behind Kane, with on-fire Raheem Sterling on the left-wing.
Bukayo Saka and Foden are set to fight it out for the starting right-wing berth, with Jadon Sancho also in contention.
Southgate has just 24 hours to make up his mind ahead of England’s biggest games in three years, when they lost in the 2018 World Cup semi-final to Croatia.
Should the Three Lions win, they will face one of Czech Republic or Denmark in the semi-finals.

Fans fume ‘games gone’ as Remo Freuler is sent off for Switzerland after clearly winning ball against Spain at Euro 2020

SWITZERLAND midfielder Remo Freuler was sent off against Spain but fans fellow professionals could not believe the decision. And although the brave Swiss held on for a 1-1 draw in the final 25 minutes and then extra-time, it was Spain who held their nerve in the penalty shootout to progress to the semi-finals.

Freuler dived in for a tackle on Gerard Moreno late in the second half and British referee Michael Oliver deemed the challenge a red card offence.
Peter Walton backed up the decision as part of ITV’s commentary, suggesting Freuler had lost control and endangered Moreno by leaving the floor in his lunge.
VAR backed up Oliver’s decision which meant Freuler headed for the tunnel, much to his dismay.
And he was not the only one bemused by Oliver’s decision, with one fan tweeting: “Games gone.”
Another added: “Games gone. Shock that Peter Walton backs the ref too.”
Gary Lineker also weighed in on incident, declaring he disapproved of both Oliver’s decision and the rules of the game.
He tweeted: “Another red card for virtually nothing.”
And Arsenal star Rob Holding shared the view of a current player on the situation.

A bemused Remo Freuler departs the St. Petersburg pitch

He wrote in an Instagram story: “Red card???! You can’t even tackle anymore. Games gone.”
Labour MP Andy Burnham also took aim at former referee Walton, tweeting: “Am I the only one who never agrees with Peter Walton?”
Despite going down to ten men with 13 minutes remaining in normal time the Swiss held onto the 1-1 scoreline until the end of extra time.
Spain piled on the pressure in extra-time but a combination of goalkeeper Yann Sommer and some brave defending from the Switzerland backline meant the Swiss went to a penalty shoot-out for the second game running in Euro 2020.
But Switzerland ran out of luck in the penalty shoot-out, losing 3-1.

ALBA OPENS THE SCORING FOR SPAIN!!!
    BRILLIANT GOAL!!!
    SWITZERLAND 0-0 SPAIN
    6. Torres breaks down the right flank and tries to get the beating of experienced left-back Rodriguez.
But Rodriguez times his tackle to perfection, sweeping the ball out of play.
Spain do, however, have a corner.
    SWITZERLAND 0-0 SPAIN
    5. Koke tries to win Spain a free-kick deep in Switzerland territory but referee Oliver isn’t having any of it.
    Switzerland break on the counter.
And Zakaria plays a slick one-two with Widmer down the right-hand side.
The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder looks to break into the penalty area.
But his final touch lets him down and the ball is cleared.
    SWITZERLAND 0-0 SPAIN
    4. Spain are seeing lots of the ball in the opening minutes of the game, as expected.
Switzerland are not keen to press high up the pitch in an attempt to win the ball.
The Swiss would rather maintain shape and wait for the perfect moment to strike.
    SWITZERLAND 0-0 SPAIN
    3. Pedri is looking to pull the strings in Spain’s midfield, bouncing the ball off his Barca team-mate Busquets.
He’s a terrific little player. Very young, but looks incredibly comfortable at the top level.
    SWITZERLAND 0-0 SPAIN
    2. Shaqiri breaks forward into Spain’s half for Switzerland, and the crowd lets up a roar.
The Liverpool man manages to get a shot off, but his effort takes a deflection and doesn’t trouble the goalkeeper.
    SWITZERLAND 0-0 SPAIN
    1. Spain get the game underway in Saint Petersburg, Russia!
Enrique’s men have looked strong in the last two games against Slovakia and Croatia.
But their defence was breached three times against 2018’s World Cup finalists in the last round.
Switzerland, on the other hand, pulled off the shock of the tournament against France.
And they’re looking to do it again!
    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!
AND WE’RE OFF IN SAINT PETERSBURG!
    HERE WE GO!
    HERE COME THE TEAMS
Both sets of players are making their way out onto the pitch at the Krestovsky Stadium.
Liverpool’s Shaqiri captains Switzerland, and they’re wearing their home colours of red.
And Barcelona’s Busquets captains Spain for his former Barca boss Enrique.
The Spaniards are in their white away shirt.
Spain will be hoping to be more defensively solid after letting in three goals in the last round.
But defender Laporte isn’t too worried about it.
He said: “You mention letting in three goals, but one of them was our own error – nothing we can do to prevent that.
“One of their other goals was terrific – just like we did brilliantly in ours! That’s football.
“The key lies in our specific, well-defined style of play.
“We’ve developed it and once we have begun to score goals, we simply have to follow that line of performance.”
Cue the national anthems……… Spain to go first!
    CITIZEN
Ferran Torres has been involved in eight goals in his last nine appearances in all competitions for Spain (7 goals, 1 assist).
Torres has scored in his last two games at the European Championship, with no Spanish player ever scoring in three in a row in the competition.

    BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK
Spain have become the first team in European Championship history to score 5+ goals in consecutive games.
They hadn’t scored more than four goals in any of their first 42 matches in the competition.
Spain are averaging 73.4% possession and have a passing accuracy of 89.5% at EURO 2020 so far.

    Team news
Belgium are beset by injury worries with Kevin de Bruyne and Eden Hazard BOTH touch and go for this game.
Manager Roberto Martinez said: “The initial information that we have from medical staff is positive for both, they will remain with the squad and they have no structural damage,
“But we are running up against time and it is very difficult to see them fully fit. So, we have to take it day by day to try and get them fit.
“We were all a bit concerned before we got the news from the scans and it was a relief to all that we can now work on trying to get them fit again.”
But in a his pre-match press conference, Roberto Martinez said it was more likely De Bruyne would play than Hazard.
He commented: “It will be difficult for Eden to play tomorrow because of a soft issue injury and maybe a little different for Kevin who’s had a ligament problem.”
Timothy Castagne has withdrawn from the squad after a double fracture in his eye socket.
Italy’s only doubt for this match is full-back Alessandro Florenzi, who has a calf injury.
Giorgio Chiellini is set to return to the starting line-up after missing the Austria game with a thigh injury.

    CUP A LOAD OF THAT
Roberto Mancini and Roberto Martinez haven’t faced off as managers in eight years.
But last time they did, it was pretty memorable.
Ben Watson headed home the only goal in extra time as Martinez’s Wigan stunned Mancini’s Manchester City in the 2013 FA Cup final.

    HEAD-TO-HEAD
Italy enjoy almost total dominance over Belgium in the head-to-head stakes.
The Azzurri have won 14 of the teams’ meetings, drawn four and lost four.
And in competitive fixtures, Belgium have won just once against Italy, back in 1972 when they beat them 2-1 in a European Championship qualifier.
Last time the sides met was at Euro 2016 when Antonio Conte tactically outclassed Marc Wilmots as his unfancied side ran out 2-0 winners through goals from Graziano Pelle and Emmanuele Giaccherini.
    FINAL FOUR
The winner of Belgium vs Italy will take on the victor of today’s early quarter-final between Switzerland and Spain.
It gets underway in Saint-Petersburg at 5pm UK time.
You can follow all the action here with our live blog.
    FEELING THE BLUES
Italy are slight favourites to advance to the Euro 2020 semi-final, according to Betfair.
Belgium are 12/5 outsiders to win the game in 90 minutes with Italy 11/8 and the draw 21/10.
You can get the Belgians to qualify at 23/20 while Italy are odds-on at 4/6.
    SHOW OF UNITY?
The argument over players taking the knee has been just as vicious in Italy as in England.
The Azzurri have not collectively taken the knee in any of their Euro 2020 games so far, but five players chose to kneel when Wales did in Rome.
And the team have now agreed that they WILL take the knee when Belgium do, in solidarity with Roberto Martinez’s team.
Captain Giorgio Chiellini stated that this does not mean they support any political stance or indeed the view of the Belgian players.
He stated: “If in fact the opponents were to choose to kneel in that case the team would do the same, kneel, out of respect for the sensitivity of the opponents.
“This is where the group chose a line.”
And the Italian FA added: “As Chiellini explained, the team will kneel in solidarity with the opponents.
“Not for the [Black Lives Matter] campaign itself, which we don’t share.
“The Austrian players didn’t kneel and ours remained standing. If those from Belgium do so, ours too will in solidarity with them.”

    CITY SLICKER
Roberto Martinez has spoken positively about Kevin de Bruyne’s chances of featuring in today’s match after he was forced off against Italy through injury.
He said: “Every day that goes by, we see an improvement. We know we are fighting against time. We will take until the last minute [to decide].
“We are in tournament mode and by being with the team here, we are trying to get them fit as quickly as we can.
“That’s not being arrogant. We’re just trying to see if we can get them fit for the next few games.
“It will be difficult in Eden’s case with a soft tissue injury, and maybe Kevin is a little bit different.”

    FREE PASS
Italy fans will be delighted to have a game they can travel to after being banned from their last 16 win over Austria at Wembley.
Italians arriving to the UK are forced into quarantine, meaning it was impossible for them to see the game.
But both Italians and Belgians are currently allowed to travel freely to Munich where this game will take place.
And Italy will have a measure of revenge for tomorrow’s quarter-final in Rome, where England fans will be unable to watch their game against Ukraine.
    INVINCIBLES CLASH
Belgium are taking on Italy as the two most successful teams at Euro 2020 so far go head-to-head.
Both teams come into this game with hundred per cent records at the tournament so far, but only one will progress to the semi-final.
The Belgians cruised out of a group containing Denmark, Finland and Russia, dazzling the world with some mesmerising attacking football.
But a more pragmatic display was required in the last 16 as they held on to a 1-0 win over Portugal with both Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne going off injured.
Italy were equally impressive in the group stage, if not more so, as they hammered Turkey and Switzerland 3-0 on home turf before outplaying Wales in a 1-0 win.
But they looked far less comfortable against Austria at Wembley and would have been dumped out but for VAR disallowing a Marko Arnautovic header for offside.
Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina popped up with the crucial strikes in extra time to send the Azzurri through, despite a consolation goal from Sasa Kalajdzic.
Munich is the host city for this one with the game to be played in front of a 22 per cent capacity after German Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer criticised Wembley for its plans to host the semi-finals and final at a 75 per cent capacity.

Gareth Southgate has been left scratching his head with a plethora of selection dilemmas to mull over.
But on Friday, the England chief had a fully-fit and available 26-man group to work with at training.
The likes of captain Harry Kane and Harry Maguire were spotted grinning throughout the session, with Southgate also beaming.
After their afternoon’s work was done, the Three Lions players hopped on the team bus and made their way to the airport.
England will fly to Rome this evening, get a good night’s sleep and have one final training session on Saturday morning in Italy.
Southgate and Co take on Ukraine at the Stadio Olimpico, with kick-off 8pm.
And the boss still has a number of things to consider going into the massive game.

Maguire, Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips and Phil Foden all currently have one yellow card to their name apiece.

But their pursuit of the 21-year-old will have to put on hold until at least next season, according to Buli News.
The youngster’s contract expires in 2025 and he has no plans of changing that in the coming years.
Baumgartner reckons staying put at the Rhian-Neckar Arena is the best thing for his career right now.
When asked about his future, he said: “My clear plan is to play for Hoffenheim next season.
“I definitely extended my contract in March with the intention to play here next season.
“I believe I have the biggest opportunity to develop further here.
“For me, that means playing consistently at a high level with more room for improvement.”
And Baumgartner’s been developing at an alarming rate over the past few seasons.
Since joining Hoffenheim in 2017 at the tender age of 16 under ex-boss Julian Nagelsmann, he’s emerged as one of the Bundesliga’a brightest talents.

In his five years at the club, Baumgartner has made 71 starts, scoring 16 goals and providing 13 assists.
The playmaker’s impressive performances at Euro 2020 have also caught the eye of Liverpool.
After witnessing Baumgartner fire Austria into the last-16 of the competition for the first-time ever, Jurgen Klopp’s side were reportedly ready to rival United’s proposed offer.
