Kiev strongman calls for Ukraine v England thriller at Euro 2020 – before re-gaining title from Brit champ

UKRAINE’S strongest man hopes for a dazzling Euros clash against England – before regaining his own world title from a Brit champion.Oleksii Novikov, winner of the World’s Strongest Man competition last year, is roaring on Andriy Shevchenko’s men to show their might in Rome tonight.

The 300lb weightlifting beast reckons his country have a fighting chance against the in-form Three Lions – but only if they believe.
He told The Sun: “I speak from my own success in my sport, belief is everything.
“It all starts in the mind. England might be a very strong team but Ukrainian character and nature means we have a strong backbone and will be difficult to beat.
“The whole country is behind the team and everyone is rooting for them and anxious for them to succeed.”

Novikov was the youngest-ever winner of the World’s Strongest Man when bagging the title last year at just 24.
He stunned the world by deadlifting an incredible 1,185lbs during the competition in Florida.
The Ukrainian can eat a staggering 7,000 calories a day during training – including 15 eggs a morning for breakfast.
But nothing would taste sweeter than a Ukrainian victory over the Three Lions in Rome, he admits.
Novikov said: “It would write a new chapter in our country’s history. Most of all though I wish for a fair and entertaining game that we can share together as two nations.”
Novikov winning the World’s Strongest Man in 2020, with Brit Tom Stoltman in second
Novikov, who lost his World’s Strongest Man title to British champion Tom Stoltman this year, has his sights firmly set on reclaiming his crown again in 2022.
He said: “What do I need to do differently to win my title again? I will tighten up my daily routine, my eating, my sleeping and recovery.
“I was also in a tough group last year. It seems I am regularly placed in one of the hardest groups of them all and it’s a very interesting experience for me so I will train with that in mind.
Raw power… The Sun took on Novikov in an wrestling boutCredit: Nick Obank, The Sun
“Tom is a great competitor and I congratulate him and all his family for his success.
“Now I am preparing for 2022 and working hard to make sure it is my title again – not Tom’s!”

Novikov travels to London on July 24 for the Strongman Classic – and warmed up by pressing Sun man Ben Leo over his head.
The Ukrainian powerhouse made light work of our 172lb reporter before taking him on in an arm-wrestling competition.
And in what is hoped will be the only Ukrainian victory over England in the next 24 hours, Novikov proved he was the real deal with an extremely close-fought win.

Kevin De Bruyne reveals he played Belgium clash with Italy with torn ankle ligaments im major worry for Man City

KEVIN DE BRUYNE played the entire Euro 2020 quarter-final with torn ankle ligaments in a major concern to Manchester City. The Belgium superstar, 30, was a doubt heading into last night’s crunch clash with Italy in Munich.

The Manchester City star could not inspire his nation to victory against ItalyCredit: EPA
He raced back from a fractured eye socket to be fit for the tournament but then picked up an ankle problem in the round-of-16 win over Portugal.
However, Roberto Martinez selected his creative talisman from the outset to take on the Azzurri – with De Bruyne believing he had a ‘responsibility’ to play.
The two-time PFA Player of the Year said: “For me personally it has been four or five weird weeks. But I especially want to thank the medical staff.
“It was a miracle that I played today because there was definitely damage to my ankle. A tear in my ligaments.
“But I felt a responsibility to play for my country today. Too bad I couldn’t do more.”
De Bruyne struggled to have the impact he would have wanted to have as Italy ran out 2-1 winners and set up a semi-final date with Spain.
Nicolo Barella and Lorenzo Insigne fired Roberto Mancini’s men into a 2-0 lead before Romelu Lukaku pulled one back for Belgium from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time.
De Bruyne added: “They had more possession and the ball didn’t go in for us, which is a shame. Getting eliminated is always a disappointment.

“It was a difficult tournament for us, we suffered many injuries. We fought until the end.
“Italy were better than us in the first half, but in the second we created more chances. We could have got it to 2-2 but we didn’t.
“We lost against a top-notch team. We’ll try to win next time, at the World Cup, but first I have to recover physically.
“I’ve had too many (injury) problems in the last few years but I’ve always tried to give everything for the team.”
De Bruyne was not the only player to end the night in pain.

Italy’s exciting left-back Leonardo Spinazzola, one of the standout performers for the Azzurri in this tournament, was stretchered off after tearing his Achilles tendon in a devastating blow for him and the team.
One of Mancini’s backroom coaching staff also required medical attention after appearing to sustain a facial injury in the dugout.
But on a lighter note, Ciro Immobile made a heroic recovery earlier on in the quarter-final clash.
He went down after slight contact with Jan Vertonghen in the Belgium penalty box and was rolling around in apparent agony.
That was until team-mate Nicolo Barella blasted in and Immobile jumped up to join in the celebrations.

Meet Vlada Sedan – wife of Ukraine star Oleksandr Zinchenko who has rowed with Guardiola and is huge TV star

THAT’S why they call it the beautiful game.Stunning Vlada Sedan clearly sets pulses racing when she’s interviewing the planet’s best footballers.
Vlada Sedan is the stunning Wag of Man City star Zinchenko
Sedan is a Ukrainian TV presenter
But the 25-year-old Ukrainian TV reporter has eyes for one man… Man City star Oleksandr Zinchenko.
The two were married in August 2020, a year after Zinchenko proposed to Sedan inside the 70,000-capacity Olympic Stadium in Kiev in front of a heart-shaped display of red roses.
Zinchenko, 24, confirmed his relationship with Sedan following Ukraine’s 5-0 win over Serbia in June 2019 where he planted a kiss on her cheek.
And he then embraced his partner after Ukraine beat Portugal 2-1 in October 2019 that secured their Euro 2020 qualification.
Fans were left wondering whether the two were an item for months before Zinchenko’s public display of affection, though his team-mates were well aware of his relationship.
It’s easy to see why the Premier League star is so enamoured with the beauty.
And Sedan took to Instagram last week to announce she is pregnant with the pair to become parents for the first time.
HIS TEAM-MATES KEPT THE ROMANCE SECRET
Despite her Instagram page alluding to the fact they were a couple, no-one really knew for sure.
Well no-one except Zinchenko’s Urkrainian and Man City team-mates, who were in on the secret.

“Some guys knew about it,” he said on Channel Football 1/2.
“It was also discussed by my Ukrainian team-mates.” We bet, probably with a hint of jealousy.
    FORGET MATCH OF THE DAY
Sedan reports for Channel Football 1/2, and has interviewed the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Andriy Shevchenko.
But it seems she has ambitions to work alongside Gary Lineker, Ian Wright and Alan Shearer on Match of the Day.
On a visit Manchester to see her beloved, she popped round to the BBC and posed in front of a snap with the footy presenters.

And she also went to a City game to cheer on her beau, enjoying a quick meeting with his boss Pep Guardiola.
    PEP TALK
Sedan hit out at Guardiola following City’s Champions League exit at the hands of Lyon last year.
She questioned the Spaniard’s tactics as Pep opted to start three centre-backs against the Ligue 1 side.
Speaking on her YouTube channel, Sedan said: “Perhaps I have no right to say this, perhaps Zinchenko will forbid me. But to put it mildly, and in order not to swear, this is completely Guardiola’s fault.
“At such a crucial moment, making such an experimental tactic for Man City is a bummer.
“I have no right to criticise, but why play three central defenders when the players themselves take their heads.
“I simply have no words, because to have such a line-up… look what players play at Man City, what a bench. Literally few clubs in the world can boast such reserves.”
Zinchenko interrupted his own wedding day to apologise to fans for comments from himself and his wife after Man City’s Champions League exit
    ZINCHENKO APOLOGY
The incident left Zinchecho to issue a statement on their WEDDING DAY where he admitted his wife was wrong to slam Guardiola.
It read: “Although my wife is a journalist, she is also a fan. During the season she was travelling with us for all away and home games because she is a massive City fan.
“In the video you can see her emotions straight after the game and she gave an opinion like all fans do because she wanted us to do better.
“We totally understand now that she shouldn’t post it on social media because she is my wife. But she was not trying to make a journalist’s opinion on the manager.
“She was simply reacting to the disappointment as a fan.
“I’m writing right now from my wedding and instead of enjoying that unbelievable moment I have to do this because I can’t skip it and leave it like that. I hope you understand.”

    TROUBLE & STRIFE
Zinchenko revealed in February how Guardiola has not yet forgotten Sedan’s rant.
Sedan alleged that the Spaniard told her footballer husband that the ‘most important thing is to be liked by your wife’.
She claimed that Guardiola brought up the incident in response to the Ukraine international making a joke on his 50th birthday.

“Zina (Zinchenko) is always Zina. Firstly compliments, best wishes, but then there must be a fly in the ointment.
“Zina told him, ‘already 50, old age’. Kidding in his own style. Pep looked at him and said: ‘Alex, the most important for me is to be liked by your wife and all will be okay’…”

    FAMILY FORTUNES
Both Zinchenko and his wife announced they will become parents on social media, much to the delight of their followers.
And Zinchenko dedicated his goal against Cyprus on Monday to his unborn child by placing a ball under his shirt.
He then shared the snap on Instagram.

    Corona
As Ukraine’s nickname is the ‘Blue and Yellow’ Corona is a suitably coloured beer label
4.5%, 12 x 330ml, £10, Sainsbury’s: We couldn’t find a beer from Ukraine, but as the team’s nickname is the “Blue and Yellow” we looked for a suitably coloured beer label: Corona. Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips are expected to start again but are one yellow card away from missing a potential semi-final.

ENGLAND are stepping up their bid to bring football home after travelling to Rome to take on Ukraine in the Euro 2020 quarter-finals.The Three Lions secured a famous 2-0 win over Germany in the last 16 – their first in a tournament knockout stage since the 1966 World Cup Final.

Jack Grealish will hope to join Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling in attack against UkraineCredit: AFP
Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling netted in the historic victory at Wembley with the country beginning to dream again.
And next up it’s Ukraine in the Italian capital after Andriy Shevchenko’s men beat Sweden in extra time.
Playing away from home for the first time in the tournament, England will need to be at their best to avoid a shock upset like Iceland in 2016.
Gareth Southgate has already revealed he was a ‘party pooper’ in the dressing room on Tuesday to stamp out any complacency.
England’s clash with Ukraine will kick off at 8pm at the Stadio Olimpico – the home stadium for both Roma and Lazio.
It will be aired on ITV1 – and streamed on the ITV Hub – with a preview starting at 7pm.

    Team news
England have a clean bill of health tonight but boss Southgate has a number of selection issues to juggle for the quarter-final.
Jack Grealish shone during his cameo against Germany and will be pushing for only his second start of the tournament.
Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane are both guaranteed starters so it remains to be seen whether England will revert to the 4-3-3 set-up that they used in the group stages.
Four players – Harry Maguire, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice and Phil Foden – are also one booking away from suspension.
The Three Lions shifted to three at the back to match Germany but the formation could be tweaked to accommodate Mason Mount.

Mount and Chelsea team-mate Ben Chilwell were forced to quarantine after coming into contact with Billy Gilmour following England’s draw with Scotland on June 18.
The 22-year-old was available to face Germany but wasn’t risked after missing out on tactical work with the rest of the team during training.
Mount could now return against Ukraine as the most attacking of a midfield three alongside Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice.
Yet the latter duo are both one booking away from missing the semi-final meaning Jordan Henderson could come in.

Ukraine meanwhile will be without striker Artem Besedin after he was ruled OUT of the remainder of the Euros.
The 25-year-old was the victim of a horror challenge from Marcus Danielson that saw the Swedish defender shown a straight red card.
    Form guide
Ukraine have won only one of their seven matches against England.
Their only previous fixture at the Euros was in 2012 when Wayne Rooney scored the only goal at Donetsk’s Donbass Arena and current coach Andriy Shevchenko was a second-half substitute.
Yet the Blue and Yellows have proved one of the surprise packages of this summer’s tournament.
Artem Dovbyk’s late header was enough for Ukraine to edge past ten-man Sweden
Ukraine – who have now reached the last eight for the first time in their history – came through Group C despite two defeats.
Oleksandr Zinchenko and Co were unlucky to lose 3-2 to the Netherlands before they bounced back with a 2-1 win over North Macedonia.
A narrow 1-0 defeat to Austria followed but Ukraine stunned Group E winners Sweden on Tuesday.
It was Artem Dovbyk who broke Swedish hearts deep in extra-time in the last-16 to set up a clash with the Three Lions.
England are a great team, they have a deep bench, an outstanding coaching staff and we are fully aware how tough this game is going to beAndriy Shevchenko
Shevchenko said: “England are a great team, they have a deep bench, an outstanding coaching staff and we are fully aware how tough this game is going to be.
“They are incredibly difficult to score against but their strength shouldn’t scare us.
“It should motivate us because everything is possible in football as in life and we will play our hearts out to give our fans even more to cheer about.”
England meanwhile finished top of Group D above Croatia and the Czech Republic after beating both, with a draw against Scotland, before that famos win over Germany.
Raheem Sterling will be looking to net his fourth goal of the EurosCredit: AFP
    Watch out for…..
Raheem Sterling. The 26-year-old winger has been England’s leading hope in the tournament so far with three goals.
And his Manchester City team-mate Zinchenko named him as one of the best in the world.
He told reporters: “Raheem Sterling is one of the best wingers in the world. Right now he is in amazing form.
“He is great, he makes the difference. We obviously need to pay attention to him and we will need to try to somehow stop him because he’s on a roll now.”
    If the game is rubbish….
Vlada Zinchenko – married to City ace Oleksandr – will hope to report on a famous win for Ukraine as one of the country’s most talented reporters.
Vlada was working on the team’s 5-0 win over Serbia in June 2019 when he planted a kiss on her cheek to confirm their relationship.
They were again in the spotlight as he helped Ukraine qualify for Euro 2020 a few months later, hugging on air.
And Oleksandr proposed with a heartfelt display of roses inside the national team’s 70,000-capacity Kiev stadium before their big day last year.
