Mount thanks Southgate for involvement in England’s Euro 2020 dream – even the time he spent alone in a hotel bedroom

MASON MOUNT has thanked Gareth Southgate for being involved in England’s Euro 2020 preparations – even when sitting alone in a hotel bedroom. The England midfielder, along with team-mate Ben Chillwell, was deemed as a close contact of Scotland’s Billy Gilmour who tested positive for Covid-19 after the 0-0 draw at Wembley.

The Three Lions pair were forced to self-isolate for 10 days.
That meant Mount, who helped England to deliver a 4-0 hammering to Ukraine last night, missed the 1-0 win over Czech Republic and was an unused substitute for the 2-0 victory over Germany.
Mount was also forced to self isolate in March 2020 after Callum-Hudson Odoi tested positive for coronavirus although he angered Chelsea after being pictured having a kickaround in the park with Declan Rice.
Mount and Chilwell took part in Southgate’s team meeting via Zoom as they were not allowed in the same room as their team-mates.
Chelsea midfielder Mount said: “It would have been easy to push us aside, not have us involved for ten days but we were in all of the meetings virtually through Zoom.
“We were involved in all the info going into games even though we weren’t involved.
“It was good to still be there, get the info, understand what the boys were doing and we watched the game, supported them from inside our rooms.
“When you’re in that situation, it’s frustrating but you have to keep focused and keep your head and see the bigger picture because we all want to win this tournament and if we’re going to do that, we have to do it together.

“I’ve experienced something similar to that but, for me, and for Chilly as well, we had to stay strong, look at the bigger picture and focus on when we could come out of the isolation and what we can do.
“We did that, we stayed strong and worked hard every day and for me to come out, play tonight and the performance we put on was brilliant.
“All that hard work we’ve been doing obviously pays off.”
Mount will be hoping to keep his place for the semi-final against Denmark on Wednesday.
Under Southgate, England also reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia and also the last four of the Uefa Nations league finals in 2019.

He added: “The gaffer said in the changing rooms that it’s three semi finals in three years so now our massive focus is to go further, is to go and win the game and then go into the final.
“We had a goal at the start of the tournament and we’re still pushing towards that. This is another step in the right direction.
“What a performance, there’s a lot of positives from the game, there’s stuff we can look at but it’s a special game but now we will look to the next one.”
England drew 0-0 away to Denmark in September 2020 in the Nations League but lost 1-0 at Wembley a month later.
Mount said: “We played them not too long ago. We know they’re a very good team, very passionate and it’s going to be a big, big test.
“It’s going to be a tough game so we have to be ready and bring the sort of intensity that we brought to the game against Ukraine.”

Brazil icon Roberto Carlos hails Luke Shaw Euro 2020 masterclass as England star grabs two more assists in Ukraine win

ROBERTO CARLOS has applauded Luke Shaw after his brilliant display against Ukraine in Rome. The Brazil legend took to Instagram after Shaw had expressed his delight with the 4-0 win.
Roberto Carlos was one of many to applaud Luke Shaw’s performance
Shaw has previously been compared to Carlos by Manchester United fans
He posted a photo of him and his team-mates celebrating at the Stadio Olimpico with the caption: “What a night! All eyes on the semis.”
In response Carlos posted several clapping emojis, showing even the greatest full-backs of all time are in awe of Shaw’s performances.
Carlos, 48, reached the World Cup final on two occasions, lifting the trophy in 2002.
He won 125 caps for Brazil and was part of the Galacticos side at Real Madrid, for whom he scored 43 goals.
With Madrid he won La Liga on four occasions and has three Champions League titles to brag of, so Shaw should be buzzing at the recognition paid to him.
And Shaw, with two assists on Saturday night to set-up Harry Maguire and Harry Kane shortly after half-time, put in a performance reminiscent of Carlos.
Like the Brazilian, Shaw marauded up and down the left-wing and posed a threat throughout, and he now has the second-most assists in the tournament,
Shaw’s inch-perfect free-kick against Ukraine presented Maguire with the perfect opportunity to head in, which the centre-back did in style.
The Manchester United left-back has been compared to Carlos by United fans previously, earning the nickname ‘Shawberto’.
But he is modest about his ability and said to the United website earlier this year: “I’ll be honest I’ve seen some things on it on social media and sometimes in my group chats my mates send me some stuff and I just laugh about it!”

Shaw also received praise from his England team-mates.

While Maguire wrote: “Thanks for the present.”
And Declan Rice added: “Some player you” along with a heart emoji.

Unbeaten champion Fury, 32, referenced his 2015 win over heavyweight legend Klitschko as England marched through into the last four.
He tweeted: “iv not seen a beat down over Ukraine like this since Düsseldorf 28 November 2015.”
Anthony Joshua, 31, also has a win over Klitschko, 44, after finishing their 2017 thriller in round 11.
But Oleksandr Usyk, 34, will get the chance to claw back some bragging rights when he challenges for AJ’s unified belts in September.
Meanwhile, England will face Denmark in the semi-finals on Wednesday back at Wembley.
BBC pundits Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand and Alan Shearer know all about the big international stage.
And they agreed the time could be now for football to finally come home.
Lampard, 43, said: “We did every bit of the job right today. We ticked every box. Gareth will sit there and say what an evening.

Argentina 3 Ecuador 0 RESULT: Lionel Messi masterclass sends Albiceleste through to Copa America semi-finals

ARGENTINA are through to the Copa America semi-finals after beating Ecuador 3-0 at the the Estadio Olimpico Pedro Ludovico.Albiceleste captain Lionel Messi led the charge as he created Rodrigo de Paul and Lautaro Martinez’s goals before scoring a screamer of his own.
Lionel Scaloni’s men are not set to face Colombia in the final four next week.
    THAT’S ALL FROM GOIANIA!
Lionel Messi led Argentina to the Copa America semi-finals thanks to another masterful performance against Ecuador at the Estadio Olimpico Pedro Ludovico.
Messi created two goals and scored a stunner at stoppage time to bring the Albiceleste just one step away from the esteemed South American competition’s final.
Lionel Scaloni’s men dominated throughout the encounter, especially in the first half where they created a raft of goalscoring opportunities.
The Argentines came close to opening the scoring on 14 minutes when Lautaro Martinez got the ball inside the box and flicked it over Hernan Galindez before producing a volley that was blocked by Robert Arboleda.
Then Messi picked up a horrendous loose ball by El Tri’s defence and failed to beat Galindez one on one as his effort rattled the left-hand post after 23 minutes.
But Argentina finally got the goal five minutes before half-time when Galindez clashed with Nicolas Gonzalez on the edge of the box and that allowed Messi to set Rodrigo de Paul up in front of open goal.
Gonzalez then failed to beat the Ecuador goalkeeper twice from close range, first with a header and then with a shot that forced a couple of incredible saves, after 45 minutes.
Gustavo Alfaro’s men had a couple of chances to get on the score sheet as well.
First with Enner Valencia and Angel Mena who failed to get a touch in front of open goal following a crisp cross from the left in the 38th minute.
Then Valencia failed to equalise when Mena crossed him the ball from the right flank as his poor header went out for a goal kick.
Argentina sealed qualification in the second half when Piero Hincapie lost the ball at the back before Messi set Martinez up in front of Galindez and the Inter Milan star didn’t miss on 84 minutes.
The Albiceleste thought they would then score from the penalty spot when the referee believed Hincapie brought Angel Di Maria down inside the box.
However, VAR showed that the challenge took place at the edge of the area and thus the defender was sent off before the official awarded Argentina a free-kick.
That is when Messi fired a stunning curling shot and sent the ball to Galindez’s top left corner in the third minute of stoppage time to seal another triumph for Scaloni’s side.
Argentina are now set to face Colombia in the semi-finals next week after Reinaldo Rueda’s men eliminated Uruguay on penalties.

    UNSUNG HEROES
Gareth Southgate has paid tribute to the England stars who have yet to feature at Euro 2020.
He said: “It’s enjoyable but immediately I’m thinking about the players that I didn’t get on the pitch because the likes of Conor Coady, Ben Chilwell, Aaron Ramsdale, Sam Johnstone, Ben White.
“We’ve had 21 on the pitch but those guys have been as important. The spirit that they’ve created, the togetherness.
“I regret not getting them on the field and I hate this thing of having to leave three out every match.
“It takes more energy from me than anything else because none of them deserve to be out of the 26.
“The fact that the guys have shown the respect that they’ve shown is why we’re in the position that we’re in.”
    NOT DANE YET
England will need to be at their best to get past Denmark in the Euro 2020 semi-final, Gareth Southgate has said.
    The Three Lions boss commented:
“They beat us in the autumn, we only drew to them in Copenhagen [in the Nations League]. They’re a very underestimated team.
“As a football nation they’ve done incredibly well, they’ve produced so many good players considering their population.
“This is going to be a really tough test and we’ll have to be at our best to get through it.”

    SOUTHGATE PRAISE
England manager Gareth Southgate paid tribute to all of his players, including the substitutes.
Southgate told BBC One: “The players have been fantastic. To play as well as they did in a game with so much resting on it was impressive.
“It’s a strange feeling. I’m thinking of the lads we didn’t get on the pitch – Conor Coady, Ben Chilwell, Sam Johnstone, Aaron Ramsdale, they’re the ones making this team successful. The spirit in the group is phenomenal.
“Whoever comes in does the job, wheoever isn’t in – it is really difficult to leave three out of the matchday squad – the squad mentality is fantastic. That’s uppermost in my mind, looking after those guys.
“I’m spending more energy worrying about the three I have to leave out because they’re all good players. None of them deserve to be left out. They’re all giving everything in training. None of it is because I don’t think they’re up to the level but we have to make the decisions. We have to make the right call for the right game with the right system. All of the players have been brilliant, tonight all the way through the group they’ve been fantastic”
    GETTY IMAGES
    SANCHO REACTS
Jadon Sancho is on his way to Manchester United but right now he is only focusing on England.
Sancho told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I’m feeling over the moon. Today was must-win and I’m just happy to have got an opportunity to play. This is a special moment for me.
“Every time I haven’t been playing I’ve been going back to training and been giving it everything.
“I’ve just been focusing on myself while I’ve been at England. I’ve always been ready if I needed to come on.
“We knew today was going to be a big game, Ukraine are a very good side. I’m delighted.
“To be fair, I don’t want to talk about Manchester United. Right now I just want to focus on England”
    GETTY IMAGES
    KANE SPEAKS
England superstar Harry Kane admits the team is on the right path but insists the job is not yet done.
Kane told BBC One: “What a great performance in a big game.
“We were favourites, there was a lot of pressure and a lot of expectations. The performance was top-drawer. Another clean sheet, four goals, it was a perfect night for us.
“We’re building on [clean sheets]. We have a great unit here from front to back. It’s a vital part of winning games and tournaments.
“We’ve got a big semi-final coming up. We’re on the right path.
“It’s where we wanted to be. We set out a vision before the World Cup of what we want to achieve. We are knocking it off step by step. The World Cup was great but we fell short, we had a good run in the Nations League. We’re in another semi-final.
“Now it’s about getting over the line, the next step that we have got to do on Wednesday.
“We have more experience [than 2018]. We’ve been playing for our clubs in big games – Champions League finals, Premier League title races. We’re looking confident. Hopefully we can continue that.
“The job is not done yet. There’s a lot more football to play.
“It’s always nice to score early in a game. It’s a great feeling to help the team. There was a lot of talk about me and my performances. But I’m just ready for the next game and try to lead this team to the European final”
    GETTY IMAGES
    SHEAR THING
Alan Shearer praised Harry Kane, who equalled him on international goals in major tournaments after scoring his ninth cracker.
Shearer is also impressed with England manager Gareth Southgate’s decisions.
The Premier League Hall of Famer told BBC: “It is incredible the difference in Harry Kane. You can see he has a spring in his step.
“In the first minute of this game he picked up the ball 40 or 50 yards and pinged it and you thought, yes that will do. Then he scored soon after.
“Another tick for Gareth Southgate – he has come up with another formation, he has put in Jadon Sancho and all his decisions again have worked perfectly.
“He is not influenced by what goes on outside the camp. He is making all of the decision and he is making all of the right decisions”
    HENDERSON BUZZ
England star Jordan Henderson is ecstatic with the big win over Ukraine that sent the Three Lions through to the semi-finals.
But Henderson is also over the moon with the fact that he finally scored his first ever international goal after 62 attempts.
The midfielder netted the fourth goal of the night and had no doubt it would ultimately happen one day.
Find out what the Liverpool ace had to say:

    FERDINAND REACTION
Rio Ferdinand hailed Manchester United star Harry Maguire’s performance and claimed he is a special centre-back.
Ferdinand told BBC: “Harry Maguire looks so comfortable at international football.
“In an England shirt he looks like a man mountain to me. He comes out with the ball and picks the right passes.
“He always tries to come out, bring someone to him and then play the ball and that is the difference, he wants to commit someone and that is the difference between him and other centre-backs”
    MAD REACTION
Leicester star James Maddison didn’t make the England squad but that hasn’t stopped him from supporting his national team from afar.
Maddison claims Tottenham star Harry Kane is the “best centre-forward in the world” after tonight’s performance against Ukraine.
Kane scored twice on his second consecutive match for the Three Lions after a long goalless spell.
    More below:
Harry Kane… best centre forward in World football for me. People tried to talk because he didn’t score for a couple of games but goes back to that old saying, form is temporary but class is permanent 🤝— James Maddison (@Madders10) July 3, 2021

    RICHARDS REACTS
Micah Richards sang England manager Gareth Southgate’s praises.
Richards claims a lot of the Three Lions’ current success comes down to Southgate’s worl.
He told BBC: “Gareth Southgate… What he’s done with this team, the belief and the way he’s changed the whole mentality.
“The belief he gives the players, it’s a joy to see, and they’re repaying him with performances like these”
    MAGUIRE REACTS
England star Harry Maguire is ecstatic with tonight’s result but warns there’s still work to do.
Maguire told BBC: “It’s a great feeling, back-to-back semis is a great achievement. I don’t want to be a party pooper but we don’t stop here, we want to go further than we did at the World Cup. It’s big progress we’re making as a country, long may the improvement continue.
“We have great belief in the dressing room. The first half was tough, but I think the second goal settled us down a lot. We deserved the third and fourth on the night.
“We have to recover for another big one coming up. It’s hard to soak it all in when there’s another big one coming up. The dressing room will be great tonight, but tomorrow we’ll wake up and be focused again, because this group of players won’t settle for a semi-final”
    GETTY IMAGES

    ENGLAND 4-0 UKRAINE
    88. Ukraine are controlling the ball in the late stages, as expected – but England are happy for them to have it!
England have thumped four past Ukraine in Rome tonight and they’re pretty much through to another semi-final.

    ENGLAND 4-0 UKRAINE
    82. Sancho shows some quick feet to get the beating of Mykolenko down the right-hand side.
But the winger takes an extra touch, allowing the wing-back to get back into position and win the ball back.
    ENGLAND 4-0 UKRAINE
    80. Southgate gets a lot of stick, and a lot of criticism for his line-ups.
But he’s guided England to back-to-back major international tournament semi-finals. Phenomenal achievement.
And he’s got an incredibly young side to work with. Bellingham, for example, just turned 18 the other day.

    79. Zinchenko works the ball out wide to Yarmolenko on the right-hand side.
The Ukrainian captain uncharacteristically shifts the ball onto his right foot and gets a shot off.
But his effort is blocked behind for a corner.

    ENGLAND 4-0 UKRAINE
    76. Ukraine are enjoying a good spell of possession inside England’s half.
But the Three Lions look incredibly comfortable to sit off the men in yellow, and wait for the right opportunity to win the ball back.
Maguire, in particular, has to stay disciplined for the final ten minutes or so.
He is one booking away from a suspension and he’s been pivotal for England at the back.

    74. Henderson plays a lovely ball wide to Sancho on the right-hand side.
Sancho manages to deliver a late cross into the box.
But the ball is cleared out of play by Matviyenko for an England throw-in.

Harry Kane’s double blast, a Harry Maguire effort and Jordan Henderson’s first international goal gave England their biggest win in the knockout stages of a major tournament.
Three Lions boss Southgate roared: “I know what will be happening at home and that’s great – beers in hand, in the air, wherever it is.
“They should do that, they should enjoy. Party hard – well, within the rules.
“It has been a long year for everybody. I’m chuffed that the performances have brought so much happiness to people.
“It’s fabulous for the country. A semi-final at Wembley everyone can really look forward to that.
Three-semi finals in three years, but we want to go a step further, two steps further.
“We didn’t want to take a backward step we wanted to really grasp the opportunity rather than hope that we might win or let fate have a chance to play its part.
“I thought the players were decisive and ruthless all night.”

England blew Ukraine away with their best performance of the tournament and took control when Kane opened the scoring within four minutes.
Kane bagged a double to banish any fears over his form and immediately set his sights on helping England overcome the Danes to end their semi-final hoodoo.
Southgate has seen his side lose World Cup and Nations League semi-finals over the past three years and Kane insists the players are ready to put the record straight.
He said: “It’s where we wanted to be. We set out a vision before the World Cup of what we want to achieve. We are knocking it off step by step.
“The World Cup was great but we fell short, we had a good run in the Nations League. We’re in another semi-final.
“Obviously there are a few of us in this team who played in that semi and we know how much it hurt not getting to the final and go all the way.
“It has been a great tournament so far and we have ticked off the boxes as we have gone along but the bottom line is we have a vision of where we want to be and it has to be winning major tournaments.
“We have a very tough game coming up. We have our supporters there as well we are going to have 60,000 in the stadium and we want to do them proud.”
Southgate added: “We’ve had to suffer a bit to get to where we are. Some difficult nights and tough performances but we are now playing with a lot belief and the players can see what’s possible.
“We still have a long way to go and we are not satisfied. Tonight is a really enjoyable night for everybody but I’ve got to say I was already thinning about the next challenge before the end of the game.
“That’s the one for us – we’ve never been to a European Championship final it’s another opportunity to make history.”

Three Lions legend Alan Shearer said: “Something special is happening.
“We started the tournament slowly but we are improving with every game. My head is telling me to calm down but my heart is getting carried away.
“Really, really positive, well done Gareth and well done England!”

But they are still haunted by Mario Mandzukic’s extra-time winner for Croatia at the World Cup in Russia three years ago.
This time, when they lead England out next Wednesday at Wembley against Denmark, they promised to book their place in a first final since 1966.
Maguire, 28, told BBC: “It is a great feeling. Back-to-back semi-finals at a major tournament is a great achievement.
“I don’t want to be a party pooper. We have another big game coming up. We want to go further this time than at the World Cup.
“It is a great feeling that we are here and the way we have done it shows the progress we are making. Long may the improvement continue.
“We have great belief in the dressing room. It was an impressive performance. We now have to rest and recover.
“It is hard to soak it up when you have another big game coming and you know who you are playing and when.
“The dressing room will be a great atmosphere tonight and then we will wake up tomorrow and be focused again.

“We’ve got a big semi-final coming up. We’re on the right path. It’s where we wanted to be.
“We set out a vision before the World Cup of what we want to achieve. We are knocking it off step by step.
“The World Cup was great but we fell short, we had a good run in the Nations League. We’re in another semi-final.
“Now it’s about getting over the line, the next step that we have got to do on Wednesday.
“The job is not done yet. There’s a lot more football to play. But I’m just ready for the next game and try to lead this team to the European final.”
