Boris Johnson makes World Cup 2030 bid to bring football home to UK and Ireland

BORIS Johnson has been lobbying to bring a World Cup home ahead of England’s semi-final clash with the Danes today. The Prime Minister has wished Gareth Southgate’s team the “best of luck” in getting to the Euro 2020 final as he stepped up his efforts to get a home soil World Cup.

Mr Johnson lobbied for a joint British and Irish based competition during a meeting at No 10 with the president of Uefa, Aleksander Ceferin on Tuesday.
But wishing the Three Lions luck tonight, the PM said: “Gareth Southgate and the England squad have done the nation proud in the Euros, and tonight we will all be wishing them the best of luck in getting to the final. Bring it home!”
Previously Cerefin, whose support is vital to the winning country, has stated that he would want a single European candidate for the 2030 World Cup so that the vote is not split.
In January Boris pledged that he would pump £2.8m towards a joint bid, adding that it was the “right time” to “bring football home”.
In an exclusive interview with The Sun in March, the Prime Minister said: “We are very, very keen to bring football home in 2030. I do think it’s the right place.
“It’s the home of football, it’s the right time. It will be an absolutely wonderful thing for the country.”

Mr Johnson hopes the image of plucky Brexit Britain, fresh from its vaccine success, hosting the European tournament this summer would be a great advert for the UK’s 2030 bid.
And he hopes it will encourage us all to play more sport so the country can “build back fitter” from Covid.
Britain and Ireland’s main competition is Spain and Portugal, who launched their own official bid last week.
After two failed attempts to host the tournament, the joint bid is thought to be more likely to get the contest on home soil.
The Chinese had also reportedly been planning a strong counterbid, but reports suggest that they are likely to back down.
The decision to allow up to 2,500 Uefa VIPs quarantine exemptions to attend the semi-finals and final at Wembley has been regarded as helpful in securing support.

The bid comes ahead of England’s biggest game on home soil in 25 years, with the Duke of Cambridge attending tonight’s match.
Southgate’s squad will have to battle with the pressure of performing on the big stage at Wembley – the biggest since losing the semi-final of Euro ’96 to Germany on penalties.
A source also said that the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall would be “closely following the outcome”.

Rio Ferdinand slams England’s Golden Generation for ‘sulking’ and praises Southgate’s ‘professional’ Euro 2020 heroes

RIO FERDINAND believes Gareth Southgate has managed everything in the right way and avoided the mistakes of the ‘Golden Generation’.The BBC pundit claimed England players in his era often sulked when not picked or gave reasons for not being able to play.

Gareth Southgate has played all but two outfield players in the tournamentCredit: AP
On BBC’s coverage of Italy vs Spain, as quoted by the Daily Mail, Ferdinand said: “You look at my team especially, players that were coming in with that situation they would have been sulking around the camp at some point, they would have been speaking to their agents at home probably.
“When they get their opportunity they would have been looking for an excuse going ‘actually, I’m not fit enough now’.”
Ferdinand argues Southgate has avoided a repeat of that and instead learnt from previous mistakes, most notably the 2018 World Cup semi-final defeat to Croatia.
He added: “It all comes from Croatia in 2018. This isn’t just something he’s (Southgate) built overnight.
“(Jadon) Sancho’s a great example, he comes in after not playing the first four games and is seamless.
“These lads (today) are professionals, they’ve got an understanding of what the job is and they all go out and do it to a tee.
“I think our squad at the time had more world-class players but this team have a much better squad.
“Players that can come in and change games, there’s not a drop off from the quality of players around them.”
COMPETITION: WIN A MERCEDES AMG A45S WORTH £51,000 PLUS UP TO £50k IN CASH

Southgate has used all but two outfield players so far in the tournament, Ben White and Connor Coady.
And though some have called for Jack Grealish to start, he has used the attacking midfielder to great effect, with Grealish playing a key part in both England goals against Germany.
Sancho also impressed against Ukraine in his first start of Euro 2020, a move that also allowed Bukayo Saka to recover from a knock.
The Arsenal star could return against Denmark as Southgate aims to create another iconic Wembley moment.

Euro 2020: England will beat Denmark if I eat three pies and wear my pants back to front

FOR the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Argentina were managed by Diego Maradona. Before and during most matches he could be seen crossing himself furiously, more than most priests do in a month of Sundays.
⚽ Read our Football live blog for the very latest news from around the grounds
England will beat Denmark if I eat three pies and wear my pants back to front, says Adrian ChilesCredit: Getty
With the help of slow motion in our TV truck, I think the most we counted was 14 crossings of himself in one go. His right hand was a blur of frantic devotion.
Here was a man who had let superstition run out of control.
I knew this was the case because I was the same — it’s about all I had in common with Maradona.
There are so many examples from my own football-supporting life, I plain don’t know where to start.
How about in the gents’ at West Brom? Just before kick-off in one game I went for a wee and found myself struggling because it turned out I’d put my boxer shorts on the wrong way around.
The gap was at the back instead of the front. I managed, but it was tricky.
Players of England stand for the national anthemCredit: Getty
When I got to my seat, I told my friends what I’d gone and done.
Upon winning that particular match one of them suggested I should do the back-to-front boxer shorts trick at the next home game.
This I did, and we won again. And the same for the following match.
Before kick-off at the game after that, someone checked with me that I’d gone back-to-front again.
When I confessed that I’d forgotten to do so, I was sent back to the gents’ to remove my trousers and don the boxers the right — or rather wrong — way around. We won again.
The next match, I made sure the boxers were back to front beforehand, but we lost.
Gareth Southgate speaks to the media during an England press conferenceCredit: Getty
And so, finally, this boxer nonsense could stop. But something else would soon come along. Ahead of one match, I ate two pies instead of one. And we won 2-0.
The god of football had obviously spotted something. Before the next game I downed three pies. Result? 3-0.
I spent the following game in a state of some digestive discomfort having downed four pies.
Needless to say, we didn’t score four goals and neither did we win. That was the end of the pie superstition.
When my daughter was too little to refuse to attend matches, I took her to The Hawthorns a few times. Every time I did so, we seemed to win.
Word of this must have got around because at one game a friend of mine was asked, anxiously, by someone I’d never even met if I’d brought my daughter to the match.
    TEAM TALK
This was too much for me. I couldn’t be dragging a four-year-old girl into the hopes and dreams of random football fans.
I resolved to call a halt to this superstition business and I’ve been a lot happier for it.
But as a special favour to our boys, I’m bringing all my old favourites out of retirement on Wednesday evening.
My boxers will be on back to front, I’ll eat three pies and I’ll force my daughter to watch with me.
Nothing can go wrong. And if Gareth wants to use that in his team talk, then he’s more than welcome.
Of course, players also have pre-game superstitions. Below are some of the England stars’ rituals.
    Jack Grealish
The attacking midfielder, 25, likes to roll down his socks so far that his shin pads are visible and says: “Obviously, your socks are supposed to go above your calves.
“But one year the socks shrunk in the wash, so they wouldn’t go higher.
The attacking midfielder likes to roll down his socks so far that his shin pads are visibleCredit: Getty
“That season, I ended up playing really well. So it became a superstitious thing for me. I thought, ‘I’m going to keep doing this because I’ve done well’.”
    Harry Kane
The captain and striker, 27, has previously attributed a goal streak at Spurs to ditching his razor.
In 2014, after scoring in three consecutive games, he said: “I have not had a shave since my first goal.

“It is the first time I have gone for the bearded look, and the missus might not be too happy if I score the next couple of weeks but it is a superstition I am keeping.”
    Luke Shaw
Left-back Luke, 25, was once given a pair of socks by his girlfriend Anouska Santos, adorned with the face of his baby boy.
Now he believes his customised socks, bearing the image of little Reign London, brings him good fortune in crunch matches.

He says: “I will always make sure I have them on. They are kind of like my lucky socks.”
    Tyrone Mings
The centre-back, 28, revealed he speaks to his psychologist for a few minutes before every game, to put himself into a hyper-competitive state.
He says: “We talk about settling down the inner child, and any feelings he might have, in what I’m about to do.

“Then we talk to the best version of myself and what he looks like, how he’s stood, how he feels, how he competes.”
    Marcus Rashford
Striker Marcus, 23, always points to the sky, remembering his Nana Cillian, who imparted valuable wisdom to him when he was a boy.
In his book, he wrote about the pain of losing her when he was 11.

He says: “Check out what I do before I get on the pitch – I do the sign of the cross then I point up to my nana. That’s my way of trying to share what big moments I can with her.”
    Kyle Walker
Defender Kyle, 31, will do anything to avoid a rotten performance – including wearing rotting shin pads.
He’s worn the same pair for 14 years, saying: “They’re hanging together a bit but are doing OK. I will never change them. I’ve never lost them.

“They have to be there. It’s impossible not to have them. I’d rather lose my boots.”
He also eats spag bol every night before a game.
    Dean Henderson

Keeper Dean, 24, always has a quick chat with his lost loved ones, looking up at the sky to them.
He says: “I do it for my grandad and Pops. They’re always looking down on me, so I like to talk to them before the game. It’s just a weird thing I’ve always done, asking for their support in the games.

But it was the former Chelsea man Morata who missed from the spot in the shootout, allowing current Blues midfielder Jorginho to slide in the winner.
The Italians will now meet either England or Denmark in the final.

Italy will meet either Denmark or England (COME ON ENGLAND) in the European Championship final after a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Spain.
On a pulsating night at Wembley, Federico Chiesa put Italy in front before Spain substitute Alvaro Morata levelled 10 minutes from the end of normal time.
Morata’s joy would later turn to tears, however, as he missed the decisive spot-kick for his country before Jorginho won it for Italy.
In just a few hours it will be time for England to do their thing. A less nervy encounter would be much appreciated.

    ALBA PROUD
Jordi Alba felt that losing on penalties was harsh on Spain, but believes the future is bright for his nation.
He said: “It’s a hard blow. We deserved a little more. That’s how penalties are. The other day we won and today we lost.
“I’m proud of all the teammates, staff… we’ve formed a magnificent group.
“Today we played one of the best teams that I remember from Italy and now from Europe.
“I’ve been in the national team for nine or 10 years and I haven’t seen a group like this for a long time.
“We have shown that this team is for the World Cup. We were the team with the clearest ideas.
“People are proud of this Spain. We have left everything, we have worked a lot. I am convinced that it will still go further.”

    ROBERTO REACTION
Roberto Mancini insists his side’s Euro 2020 adventure is far from over after Italy booked their place in the final with a penalty shoot-out win over Spain.
The Italian boss told RAI Sport: “Penalties are cruel. Spain are a great side who play really well. We didn’t play the way we usually do but fought hard.
“They caused us problems, but then we got the right co-ordinates and didn’t risk much.
“We knew from the start that Spain were the masters of possession, so they’d cause us problems, but we had to adjust and fight hard.
“Football teams attack and defend, they cannot just attack. We both had chances, these are both great teams, all teams defend, not just Italians.
“The credit goes to the lads, because they believed in all this three years ago, but it’s not over yet.
“We’ve got to gather our strength, what is left, and prepare for the final.”

How England could line up against Denmark in Euro 2020 semi-final with Bukayo Saka replacing Man Utd newbie Jadon Sancho

BUKAYO SAKA looks set to return to the England side at the expense of Jadon Sancho for the crunch clash with Denmark. The Arsenal ace, 19, was given the nod in last week’s epic 2-0 victory over Germany in front of a raucous Wembley.
Gareth Southgate has some key decisions to make ahead of the Denmark clashCredit: AP
Arsenal star Bukayo Saka looks likely to get the nod in front of Jadon Sancho
Unfortunately the attacker picked up a knock and missed out on the squad that travelled to Rome to face Ukraine on Saturday.
Sancho, who will complete his transfer from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United after Euro 2020, stepped in and impressed as the Three Lions romped to a 4-0 win to set-up the semi-final showdown.
But it seems that was not enough to convince England boss Gareth Southgate to stick with him as his team look to secure a place in the final of Euro 2020.
Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling, both on three goals apiece at the tournament, are 100 per cent automatic starters.
That leaves Southgate with a decision to make on who completes his trio of attackers at Wembley against the Danes.
However, it seems he has decided to recall teenager Saka after he demonstrated his abilities to pick the ball up deep and dribble straight through the opposition and help pull England up the pitch against the Germans.
Jordan Pickford will remain in goal – and looks to continue his run of clean sheets at the tournament- with the same back four of Kyle Walker and Luke Shaw at full-back, marshalled by the centre-half pairing of Harry Maguire and John Stones.
The partnership of Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice in front of them has proven to be key to England’s rock-solid defence.

COMPETITION: WIN A MERCEDES AMG A45S WORTH £51,000 PLUS UP TO £50k IN CASH

And Chelsea’s Mason Mount seems a cert to start ahead of them and help support Saka, Sterling and Kane in attack.
Should Southgate opt for this XI then it is not just disappointing news for Sancho.
It also means Jack Grealish will be left sat on the bench waiting to be unleashed.

England vs Denmark football results: Head-to-head record between Euro 2020 semi-finalists

ENGLAND reached the semi-finals of the European Championship for the first time since 1996 with a 4-0 win against Ukraine in Rome.Standing between the Three Lions and the final is an inspired Denmark side, who have a good record against Gareth Southgate’s team.

Here, SunSport takes a look at England’s record against the Scandinavian nation since the two first met in September 1948.
    England vs Denmark head-to-head
England have beaten the Danes in 12 of their 17 encounters, although they haven’t recorded a competitive win since 2002.
And Southgate’s team failed to beat their semi-final opponents in the Nations League last autumn, drawing 0-0 in Copenhagen and losing 1-0 at Wembley.
The two teams last met at a major tournament in 2002, with England hammering Denmark 3-0 on the Japanese island of Niigata in the last 16 of the World Cup.
Gareth Southgate is yet to beat Denmark as England manager
Here are the highlights of their previous encounters:
    England 5 Denmark 2 – Molineux (1956)
Their first competitive match between the two nations was 59 years ago at Wolves’ stadium.
Walter Winterbottom’s England side eased to victory in the West Midlands, with Manchester United icon Duncan Edwards scoring twice.
Preston legend Tom Finney, inaugural Ballon d’Or winner Stanley Matthews and 105-cap international Billy Wright also played for England in the drubbing.
    Denmark 0 England 0 – Malmo (1992)
England have played Denmark just once before at the European Championships – 29 years ago in Sweden.
The game finished 0-0 as Gary Lineker, Paul Merson and Co failed to beat Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel.
If you’re an England fan looking for a bad omen, Denmark went on to win Euro ’92 – and Schmeichel’s son Kasper will be in goal for the semi-final.

EURO 2020 FREE BETS: GET OVER £2,000 IN NEW CUSTOMER DEALS

    England 3 Denmark 0 – Niigata (2002)
The two teams last met at a major tournament 19 years ago and it was a fairly comfortable game for Sven Goran Eriksson’s team.
An own goal from ex-Premier League goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen and one each for Liverpool pair Michael Owen and Emile Heskey sealed victory in the last 16 of the World Cup.
England went on to lose to eventual winners Brazil in the next round, with Ronaldinho famously lobbing Arsenal stopper David Seaman to win the game.

    England 1 Denmark 0 – Wembley (2014)
England’s last victory against Denmark came seven years ago as Roy Hodgson’s team sealed an uninspiring 1-0 win at Wembley.
Current squad members Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling and Luke Shaw all played in the forgettable match.
A late goal from Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge secured victory, although both teams have changed significantly since that game.

    England 0 Denmark 1 – Wembley (2020)
Denmark were victorious in the last meeting between the two teams, with Christian Eriksen scoring a first-half penalty in their Nations League clash.
Perhaps most concerning for England is the strength of the team manager Southgate played that day, with seven of the 11 also starting against Ukraine in the quarter-final.
But Sterling, Shaw, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish did NOT play in that defeat – and England fans will be hoping one of those stars can unpick the stubborn Danish defence at Wembley on Wednesday, July 7.

But who will be their opponent at the national stadium, should they get past the Danes?
Who will England play in the Euro 2020 final?
England will face Italy if they make it past the Danes on Wednesday evening.
The Italians are the only team to have won every game they have played at the tournament so far and impressed by beating Belgium’s ‘Golden Generation’ in the quarter-final.
Spain were less impressive in the tournament, finishing second in their group behind Sweden.
They then won an epic last 16 match 5-3 against Croatia after extra time before limping past ten-man Switzerland on penalties in the quarter-finals.
But they took the Azzurri all the way at Wembley, with the match finishing 1-1 after 120 minutes.
A penalty shootout followed, with Jorginho rolling in the winning spot-kick for the Italians and booking their place in the final on Sunday.

What is England’s record against Italy?
England have a negative head-to-head record against Italy, having won eight, drawn eight and lost eleven.
And their record against the Italians major tournaments is nothing short of dreadful.
The Three Lions have met the Azzurri four times at European Championships or World Cups, winning zero, drawing one and losing three.
The draw came in the Euro 2012 quarter-final when Roy Hodgson’s men held onto a 0-0 against Cesare Prandelli’s Italy before being knocked out on penalties.
Last time the sides met competitively, Prandelli’s Italy beat Hodgson’s England 2-1 in the 2014 World Cup group stage.
The sides have since played out two 1-1 draws in friendlies.
