Bukayo Saka hailed by Arsenal hero Ian Wright after becoming youngest star to start semi-final for England at Euro 2020

BUKAYO SAKA was ‘destined’ to make a record-breaking start for England against Denmark, according to Ian Wright.Arsenal legend Wright, 57, detailed how the winger’s emergence for the Three Lions did not happen overnight.
Bukayo Saka became England’s youngest-ever semi-final starter at WembleyCredit: AP
He told ITV: “We’re talking about someone that joined Arsenal’s academy at age seven.
“He’s progressed through, he’s always been somebody that’s played at a higher level.
“He’s played for England since he was 16, he’s played at every level.
“He’s not just arrived here, he’s somebody that was destined to do what he’s doing right now.
“That’s why everyone at Arsenal knows what he’s capable of, and we’re seeing it right now.”
Saka became the youngest-ever player to start a semi-final for England’s senior men’s team on Wednesday, at the age of 19 years, 10 months and two days.

It was his third appearance at Euro 2020 having been brought into the starting line-up for the group clash with Czech Republic.
Fellow pundit and former England defender Gary Neville paid tribute to Gareth Southgate for giving Saka the opportunity.
He stated: “It’s a massive achievement, but I think it’s typical of Gareth’s reign, where he’s ripped up the rule book.
“You don’t have to be a starting player for a club, you don’t have to be at a fashionable club, you don’t have to be at a Champions League club, you don’t even have to be the most popular with the media or with the fans.
“If you’re in form in training, he’ll pick you in a game, and it’s paying off.
“The lads that are out on the pitch are the ones who have been in the best form, and Saka’s been electric in the games that he’s played.”
What Saka’s done in the previous matches, he’s really embraced that challenge. Gareth Southgate

Southgate explained before England’s heroic 2-1 extra-time victory that Saka provided a better balance to the team than Jadon Sancho, who started the win over Ukraine.
He said: “What he’s done in the previous matches, he’s really embraced that challenge.
“We were very pleased with Jadon at the weekend.
“Everybody knows we’ve got fantastic options in those areas but we felt for the balance of tonight that Bukayo is the right choice.”

Jordan Pickford breaks record for most minutes without conceding goal overtaking Banks – but let’s in five mins later

DENMARK opened the scoring against England – just moments after Jordan Pickford broke the record for most minutes without conceding. The 27-year-old had gone 725 minutes without conceding before Mikkel Damsgaard’s stunning free-kick put the Danes 1-0 up at Wembley.

England rallied, however, and Bukayo Saka forced an own-goal to take the game to extra-time where Harry Kane scored a penalty winner to set up a final against Italy.
Pickford broke the record in the 25th minute, overtaking Gordon Banks’ tally of 720 minutes.
Banks set the record at the World Cup in 1966 – the only major tournament England have won to date.
But Pickford’s impressive tally was stopped five minutes later when Damsgaard’s powerful effort smashed into the back of his net.
The England goalkeeper will be disappointed to have conceded as the ball landed near the middle of his goal.
Speaking to ITV Sport, ex-England assistant manager Gary Neville said: “Jordan Pickford should have done better.
“The goal was coming. Denmark was getting through us far too easily, our back four were getting pulled apart.
“It’s a long way out and I always think if the ball goes in the corner, then no problem. But that’s in the middle, the goalkeeper’s got to save that… he’ll be really disappointed.”

Gareth Southgate is yet to beat Denmark as England manager

The last time Pickford let one in while wearing the Three Lions was against the Danes last October in their Nations League clash.
He’s already guaranteed to win the tournament’s Golden Glove award after Italy stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma conceded against Spain in the other semi-final.
Pickford’s blushes were spared in the 39th minute when a low cross from Arsenal youngster Bukayo Saka found the back of the opposition net.
Denmark captain Simon Kjaer has the unwanted honour of an own goal after pressure from England’s man of the tournament Raheem Sterling.
There have now been ELEVEN own goals at Euro 2020 – the most scored at single major tournament.

In fact, the hit has become so popular the Coldstream Guards played it in a rousing brass rendition in the hours before the Euros semi-final against Denmark.
Why do England fans sing Sweet Caroline?
Aston Villa and Chelsea fans will well know Sweet Caroline being played at Stamford Bridge and Villa Park.
And boxing fans have been known to sing Sweet Caroline at the top of their lungs, particularly during Anthony Joshua fights.

In a chat with talkSPORT, Wembley DJ Tony Parry made the decision to play Sweet Caroline in the win over Germany.
He picked it instead of France 98 hit Vindaloo.
“I was going to play ‘Vindaloo’, but went with my gut,” he said as he decided to play Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond.
“Even the German fans were belting it out in the end. It’s a song that all fans can enjoy.
“The match director said in my in-ear ‘the world’s been closed for 18 months… let ’em have it’.”
What are the lyrics to Sweet Caroline?
Where it began, I can’t begin to knowing
But then I know it’s growing strong
    Was in the spring
    And spring became the summer
Who’d have believed you’d come along
    Hands, touching hands
Reaching out, touching me, touching you
    Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
    I’ve been inclined
    To believe they never would
    But now I
Look at the night and it don’t seem so lonely
We filled it up with only two
    And when I hurt
    Hurting runs off my shoulders
How can I hurt when holding you
    One, touching one
Reaching out, touching me, touching you
    Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
    I’ve been inclined
    To believe they never would
    Oh no, no
    Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
    Sweet Caroline

    I believe they never could
    Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good More

And ex-Blues boss Sarri has joined Italy striker Lorenzo Insigne in rating the back-to-basics midfielder as a shock rival to six-time world player of the year Messi at this year’s individual awards.
The Lazio chief said: “If Italy were to win the European Championship, it is clear that he would become one [a favourite for the Ballon d’Or].
“He is a refined player, probably not understandable by everyone.
“You have to set your eyes on him and only watch him in the game.
“He is so good and intelligent that he makes everything seem easy, rarely anything spectacular remains in your eyes. This is his greatness.”
Meanwhile, attacking wizard Messi had his 34th birthday as he helped Argentina to Sunday’s Copa America final with hosts and big rivals Brazil.

He grabbed, pushed and even playfully punched the Barcelona left-back despite then giving him a hug.
According to the Mail, Alba was under the impression that referee Felix Brych’s coin had fallen for Spain.
It had a blue an a red side, and when it came up red the left-back thought he had the pick of the ends – but red had actually been designated to Italy by German official Brych.
Two tosses took place, first to decide the ends and then who shoots first, and both landed for the Azzurri.
Fans picked up on the bizarre embrace and were convinced Juventus legend Chiellini was doing his best to get in Alba’s head.
Some even suggested he was ‘bullying’ his smaller rival.
