England denied penalty after Harry Kane goes down against Denmark at Euro 2020 – but is this why VAR didn’t give it?

ENGLAND fans were shocked when Harry Kane wasn’t awarded a penalty in their Euro 2020 semi-final against Denmark.Kane appeared to be fouled in the box but the referee decided to penalise the captain instead, much to the disappointment of the Wembley crowd.

But it turned out not to matter as England were later awarded a controversial penalty when Raheem Sterling was brought down in extra-time.
Harry Kane stepped up and although he saw an awful effort saved by Kasper Schmeichel, the rebound fell kindly to him to score.
Gareth Southgate’s men held on to reach a major international final for the first time in 55 YEARS.
Earlier, with 74 minutes on the clock, Kane went down in the box after a tussle with Denmark international Christian Norgaard.
The Tottenham striker was clearly brought to the ground by Norgaard – but Dutch referee Danny Makkelie decided not to give a pen.
In the build-up to the incident, Kane fouled RB Leipzig forward Yussuf Poulsen in an attempt to win the ball.
But former Premier League referee Peter Walton thinks Denmark were fortunate to get the referee’s decision.
He told ITV Sport: “I think he’s unlucky there because the defender has come across him – and caught him late – so it could have gone either way.

“But obviously you can see it from these replays, here, where the foot goes through.
“It could have gone either way to be honest with you.”
Fans on social media were divided on whether Kane should have been awarded a penalty.
One tweeted: “You can clearly see that it is a penalty.”

While another wrote: “There was a foul beforehand so it was not a penalty.
“Referee should have called it quicker, though, but he probably takes his directive from the earpiece.”
Some were also taking aim at VAR, with one tweeting: “This is a beautiful example why VAR should go.”
Although Kane was denied a Penalty by VAR, England did get one in extra-time which the skipper, at the second attempt, dispatched.

Watch Mikkel Damsgaard score sensational free-kick for Denmark opener against England at Euro 2020

MIKKEL DAMSGAARD opened the scoring in Denmark’s Euro 2020 semi-final defeat to England with a sensational first-half free-kick.The Sampdoria star, 21, was one of the Danes’ best players at the tournament.

And Damsgaard continued to impress as he put his country ahead at Wembley after half an hour.
An indirect Denmark free-kick resulted in another set-piece closer to goal after Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen was fouled by Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw.
Damsgaard stood over the ball as England formed a defensive wall.
But no amount of bodies could have stopped the following strike.
Damsgaard hit a howitzer of a shot, sending the ball flying over the wall before dipping past Jordan Pickford’s outstretched arms.
The free-kick sent the Danish fans wild in the Wembley stands – and came just five minutes after Pickford had secured an England record.
Damsgaard’s teammates were equally jubilant after coming into the game as underdogs.
But Denmark’s lead last just nine minutes when captain Simon Kjaer turned the ball into his own net.

England then went 2-1 up in extra time after Harry Kane fired in a rebound from his saved penalty.
And the Three Lions held on to ride out the final ten minutes, sealing their place in Sunday’s final against Italy.
Damsgaard’s impressive tournament form is sure to attract interest this summer, with Leicester City reportedly eyeing him.
The winger only joined Sampdoria a year ago from Nordsjaelland for £6million.
But the Italians will only sell him for a huge fee, with Fabrizio Romano claiming they want £38m.
Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero said: “I expected Damsgaard to be this good at the Euros, but he is not for sale.
“Either they bring something that makes us excited, or he won’t be sold.
“It’s no longer then same as before when one offer arrived and we would sell the player.
“Now we want to make another stand. We want to keep the footballer, we want to enjoy him.”

Watch Kasper Schmeichel’s incredible fingertip save to deny England star Harry Maguire vs Denmark

HARRY MAGUIRE was denied a potential goal for England against Denmark by Kasper Schmeichel’s stunning stop. With the score at 1-1 during Wednesday’s Euro 2020 semi-final, the defender rose highest from a free-kick after 55 minutes.

The ball spun off Maguire’s head and appeared to be looping in at the far-post.
But Danish goalkeeper Schmeichel leapt across to his right and parried the effort away from the goal.
The Leicester City skipper was in inspired form in the Euro 2020 semi-final, but went home heartbroken as England won in extra-time.
Schmeichel made a number of quality saves and even saved Harry Kane’s penalty – only for the rebound to cruelly drop straight into the path of Kane to tap home.
The goal sent England fans into raptures and the team into their first major international final in 55 YEARS.
Schmeichel has previous in producing big saves at Wembley, too.
In Leicester’s FA Cup final victory over Chelsea in May, he managed to deny both Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount in fine fashion.
In fact, Maguire’s effort was almost a replica of Chilwell’s header which was saved by Schmeichel at the same end and by the same post.

The Manchester United centre-back had moments earlier been booked for contesting an attacking header with Simon Kjaer and sending the Denmark captain to the ground in the process.
Earlier in the game, Mikkel Damsgaard scored the first goal England had conceded at the Euros with a free-kick that beat Jordan Pickford.
Raheem Sterling battled Kjaer on the line for the leveller, which was awarded as an own goal by the defender.
Schmeichel had somehow saved the winger’s attempt only a minute earlier with a ‘starfish’ stance previously seen by dad Peter.
The 34-year-old keeper had teased England before Wednesday’s game, over their trademark tune of ‘Football’s coming home’.
He said: “Has it ever been home? Have they ever won it?”

Watch Harry Kane’s sensational ‘slide rule’ pre-assist pass as England hit back against Denmark in Euro 2020

HARRY KANE turned creator for England’s equaliser against Denmark in the Euro 2020 semi-final.England fell behind to Mikkel Damsgaard’s free-kick in the 30th minute but responded well to the setback.

And Kane was at the forefront of The Three Lions attack, producing a sublime pass to cut through the Denmark defence.
That put Bukayo Saka through and his low cross, which was aimed at Raheem Sterling, was turned into the net by Denmark captain Simon Kjaer.
England could have scored moments before, with Kane playing a key role once again.
On that occasion he was found by Saka with a through ball before crossing into Sterling, but the Manchester City forward could only fire straight at Kasper Schmeichel.
Kane also had his own effort at goal, but sent a half volley from 20 yards flying over the Denmark bar.
But the captain led by example after England fell behind and was seen tapping his head to tell his team-mates to keep calm and keep their heads.
And Kane’s first-half performance earned him several plaudits on social media.

Watch Kasper Schmeichel emulate dad with stunning ‘starfish’ save denying England star Raheem Sterling at Euro 2020

After Mikkel Damsgaard’s fantastic free-kick put the Danes ahead, the Three Lions attempted to hit back immediately.
An eye-of-the-needle through ball from Bukayo Saka set Harry Kane away down the right wing and his low cross met the unmarked Sterling for a seemingly guaranteed goal.
But Schmeichel stood tall to parry the ball clear with his chest.
The 34-year-old Leicester star produced the ‘starfish’ stance to deny Sterling, who hit the ball right at him.
It was a startlingly familiar save for anyone who watched his dad, Peter, for Manchester United during the 1990s.
In particular, a 1999 clash with Inter Milan saw Ivan Zamorano fail to convert a golden opportunity at the far-post thanks to Schmeichel Snr’s use of the starfish.

Kasper has previous in producing big saves at Wembley, too.
In Leicester’s FA Cup final victory over Chelsea in May, he managed to deny both Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount in stunning fashion.
Yet he was powerless to stop England finally breaching his defence moments later.
Within a minute of Sterling’s miss, the winger got in behind again to help Simon Kjaer convert a Saka cross for an own goal to make it 1-1.

Although Harry Maguire was denied with a near replica of that Chilwell save in the second-half, as his far-post header was tipped away.
Schmeichel’s heroics took his side to extra-time where Harry Kane’s penalty sent England through to Sunday’s final.
Peter shared a throwback photograph with his son before the semi-final, of their trip on the Denmark team bus during the country’s Euro 92 triumph.
Kasper had teased England before Wednesday’s game, over their trademark tune of ‘Football’s coming home’.

Becks – who earned 58 caps during his time with England – is suited and booted for the occasion, while Gazza, who was capped 57 times, has been spotted donning sunglasses with plasters on his face.
Meanwhile, Duke of Cambridge – who is seated in front of Becks -was pictured smiling with the President of Uefa, Aleksander Ceferin, ahead of the 8pm kick-off.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie were also seen in the stands, roaring their support for Gareth Southgate’s side.
Bojo has donned an England shirt for the occasion, while Wills looked smart in a shirt and tie as his wife Kate Middleton self-isolates at home.
The Duchess is isolating after a Covid contact as she attended Wimbledon.
She was alerted after taking her seat in the Royal Box on Friday and left straight away at around 4pm before Briton Dan Evans took to the court.
Kate, 39, had her second Covid-19 jab within five weeks of her first dose.
Missing the match may come as a blow to the mum-of-three, who was seen enjoying what’s believed to be her first England men’s football international in person.

The family were spotted cheering as the Lions clinched an epic win over their old rivals on home turf.
And while they weren’t among the fans lucky enough to watch England’s sensational 4-0 victory over Ukraine in Rome, William looked thrilled to be back in his seat for the game.
William wrote on Twitter how he “can’t wait” for the England v Denmark match.
After Saturday’s game, he tweeted: “Another top team performance and clean sheet from @England tonight. #ThreeLions .
“Well played to Ukraine. Can’t wait for Wednesday’s semi final! Onwards W.”

George’s trip to the football was an after school treat without his younger siblings, Charlotte, six, and Louis, three.
Wills, who is the current president of the FA, was seen punching the air as Southgate’s men stormed to victory.
It was a long day for the future king, who travelled back from Scotland after visiting a shipyard to meet the team building HMS Glasgow.
But he’s regularly seen at games – and was at the stadium supporting England during their nail-biting 1-0 win against the Czech Republic.

England have beaten the Danes in 12 of their 17 encounters, although they haven’t recorded a competitive win since 2002.
And Southgate’s team failed to beat their semi-final opponents in the Nations League last autumn, drawing 0-0 in Copenhagen and losing 1-0 at Wembley.
The two teams last met at a major tournament in 2002, with England hammering Denmark 3-0 on the Japanese island of Niigata in the last 16 of the World Cup.

And Keane revealed he was a huge fan of American artist Diamond, before adding he went to a concert a decade ago.
However, the night didn’t go exactly to plan for Keane.
The Red Devils icon revealed he got into a bust-up with the woman sitting next to him.
That’s because she was singing too loudly!
