Arsenal icon Arsene Wenger baffled by England penalty and blasts VAR for ‘letting referee down’ in Euro 2020 semi-final

ARSENE WENGER has blasted VAR for ‘letting the referee down’ during England’s 2-1 win over Denmark last night. The Three Lions were awarded a penalty when Raheem Sterling went down in extra time with the score level at 1-1, with Harry Kane’s subsequent rebound proving to be the winner.
Arsene Wenger explained his reasoning on beIN SportsCredit: beIN SPORTS

But Wenger, 71, felt that the contact on Sterling was too minimal to be a penalty.
He said on beIN Sports: “No penalty.
“And in a moment like that I believe that the VAR… I don’t understand why they don’t ask the referee to have a look at it and have a clear (look).
“In a moment like that it’s important that the referee is absolutely convinced it’s a penalty.
“It was not clear enough to say ‘yes it is’.
“At least he should have had a look on the screen, I don’t know why the VAR didn’t ask him to go.”
Host Richard Keys then asked if VAR had ‘let Denmark down’.
To which Wenger replied: “I think that VAR has let the referee down.

“Not Denmark. Denmark is a bit unfortunate and I understand it’s difficult for the referee – but he must have a look at it.”
The Danes were also furious at a laser beam being projected at Kasper Schmeichel’s eyes while the penalty was taken, with Uefa taking action against England.
And a petition has even been started by angry fans to have the game REPLAYED.

This is the petition one angry fan has set up to get the England vs Denmark game replayed
And it was also revealed that in the build up to that penalty there were TWO balls on the pitch.
England have also being hit with three charges for Uefa, one being for a fan shining a laser in Denmark keeper Kasper Schmeichel’s eyes for the spot-kick.
The other two are for fans booing the Danish national anthem, and for fireworks being set off.
One angry football fan, Cris Pinto, has started a petition on Change.org titled ‘Rematch England vs Denmark’.
It reads: “We wish to overule the penalty decision against Denmark.
“It was a wrong call, there needs to be contact for a penalty and there was absolutely no contact.
“If this is not overuled, it would show a failure by Uefa and the beautiful game of football.”
Over 1,500 people have signed the petition so far.

Last England XI to face Italy includes just four of Southgate’s Euro 2020 team and managed 1-1 draw

ONLY four of England’s Euro 2020 heroes made the cut the last time England faced Italy three years ago.Gareth Southgate and his men are currently the toast of the nation after securing a place in a final of a major tournament for the first time since 1966.

The Three Lions came from behind as Harry Kane’s extra time strike fired them to a 2-1 victory over Denmark in front of a raucous Wembley last night.
Now Southgate and his men are hoping to go all the way and lift the European Championship trophy when they return to the national stadium on Sunday.
Roberto Mancini’s Italy – who come into the game on the back of an astonishing 33-match unbeaten run – stand in the way of immortality for our England icons.
And the Three Lions will be hoping for better luck than the last time they took on the Azzurri at Wembley on March 27, 2018.
That night they were led to a frustrating 1-1 draw on home turf – and only four members of the current squad started it.
Southgate was in his final preparations for the World Cup in Russia, which England would go on to suffer semi-final heartbreak, and included several players fighting for a seat on the plane for that showpiece.
Current No1 Jordan Pickford was on the bench with Jack Butland, now back-up at Crystal palace, favoured in goal.
This year’s defensive stalwarts Kyle Walker and John Stones were both part of the back three in front of him but there was no Harry Maguire next to them.

The man lovingly known as ‘Slabhead’ was an unused sub as Burnley’s James Tarkowski made up the backline instead.
Eric Dier, who was left out for the squad this summer after a disappointing campaign at Tottenham, was marshalled with sitting in front of them and offering protection – a role duo Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips seem certain to continue doing against Italy.
Kieran Trippier, who came on as sub in the epic victory over the Danes, was deployed as right wing-back that night with AShley Young on the left.
And the midfield was a combination of Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard, who was unfortunate not to make the final cut this year after his sensational West Ham loan.

Raheem Sterling was the fourth member of the current crop who played that evening, and he won the free-kick that Lingard took quickly to tee-up strike partner Jamie Vardy to break the deadlock on 26 minutes.
Unfortunately for England they were unable to hold on to the lead, and it was Tarkowski who was punished late on after a debatable VAR check for Lorenzo Insigne to equalise with a penalty.
One other notable mention from that evening should be Jordan Henderson.
The midfielder, who scored his first England goal in the 4-0 quarter final hammering over Ukraine last Saturday, came off the bench to replace Stones with 17 minutes remaining to take the total number of the current crop involved to five.

Jose Mourinho stunned by England’s penalty decision vs Denmark but says ‘fantastic’ Three Lions deserved Euro 2020 win

JOSE MOURINHO doesn’t believe England deserved a penalty against Denmark – but he does think they deserved to win.SunSport columnist Mourinho said the Three Lions were worthy winners following their historic victory.

Gareth Southgate’s heroes needed extra-time to beat the Danes after it finished 1-1 at the end of normal time.
They will meet Italy in Sunday’s final at Wembley – with touts flogging tickets for up to £50,000.
With the scores level at 1-1 at the end of normal time, Three Lions fans were sent to dreamland with just one minute of the first extra period to go.
Sterling was caught in the penalty area with ref Danny Makkelie pointing to the spot. Although it was arguably soft, VAR did not see a clear and obvious error as there was contact and Harry Kane stepped up.
The usually clinical hitman took a deep breath and hit a weak effort low to Kasper Schmeichel’s left and the Leicester goalie kept it out.
But the ball deflected back into Kane’s path and he slammed it in from close range to trigger glorious scenes inside the national stadium.
England held on against a shattered Denmark to set up a final Wembley showdown against Italy on Sunday and although he wasn’t sure about the penalty decision, new Roma boss Mourinho said they deserved it.
The Special One told TalkSPORT: “It was never a penalty.

“The best team won. England deserved to win. England was fantastic but for me it was never a penalty.
“The best team won. England is a better team than Denmark.
“Denmark played the way I was expecting them to and they played until their limits.
“England were really really good and no doubt deserved to win that match. But for me it was never a penalty.
“And I think at this level – especially at this level – the semi-final of a Euros…
“I don’t understand really the referee’s decision and I understand even less the fact the VAR didn’t bring the ref to the screen or didn’t overturn the decision.
“For me it’s never a penalty. Not with [Jannik] Vestergaard or with the second defender.
“So as a football man I’m very happy England won, don’t get me wrong, and they deserved to win.
“But as a football man I’m disappointed the penalty was given.”
Mourinho wasn’t the only one baffled by the penalty decision with angry Danes and Italians accusing England of cheating and Sterling of diving.
As well as that, fans were also furious there were two balls on the pitch in the build up to the award.
And one mindless supporter also shone a laser pen at Schmeichel as Kane prepared to take the spot-kick and the Leicester man still saved it.

Raheem Sterling equals all-time record for dribbles in a Euros game after England star’s masterclass in Denmark win

RAHEEM STERLING is firmly in the running to be named player of the tournament for Euro 2020.The Manchester City winger put in another mesmerising performance to help England to a 2-1 semi-final win against Denmark.

Raheem Sterling set the record for the most attempted dribbles at a Euros gameCredit: AP
And the 26-year-old also equalled a record along the way.
Sterling made the joint-highest number of attempted dribbles in a European Championship match.
He ran at the Denmark defence 15 times – and is tied with four football legends for the feat.
Eden Hazard managed the same number in 2016 against Hungary.
Dutch winger Arjen Robben terrorised the Latvia defence in 2004, and France star Franck Ribery did the same against Ukraine in 2012.
The awesome quintet is finished off with Three Lions hero Steve McManaman, who was just as fleet-footed against Spain in 1996.
Sterling completed nine of those 15 runs – not quite matching Hazard’s successful total of 12 from that 2016 match against Hungary.

Sterling won the penalty that ultimately led to Harry Kane sending England into the finalCredit: EPA

One of the England man’s mazy runs saw him felled in the penalty area, leading to the match-winning goal from Harry Kane.
But furious Danish and Italian fans have branded England cheats and Three Lions hero Sterling a diver.
Despite the anger from fans of other teams, streetwise Sterling was adamant it was a pen.

He said: “I went into the box and he stuck his right leg out, and it touched my leg so it was a clear penalty.”
Sterling has scored three goals so far this tournament – one behind captain Harry Kane.
And he has clearly not been affected by transfer speculation having being linked with a move away from the Etihad.

Jack Grealish’s brilliant reply to Gareth Southgate after England boss hauled off sub in Euro 2020 win over Denmark

FANS have been clamouring for Jack Grealish to see more action this summer at Euro 2020.But the man himself is focused on just one thing – winning the tournament.

Wembley was abuzz with excitement when the Aston Villa ace came on in the 68th minute of last night’s 2-1 semi-final victory over Denmark.
But he lasted just 36 minutes on the pitch, before being sacrificed by Gareth Southgate for a more defensive option in Kieran Trippier after England went ahead.
Some players might have been miffed by such an incident.
Grealish, however, only cared about his team winning.
As reported by the Independent, Southgate went to Grealish to explain his decision at the final whistle.
But the midfielder, 25, replied: “Gaffer, it doesn’t matter. I’m not bothered.
    “We’ve got to the final!”
Southgate, 50, explained to talkSPORT, saying: “Jack had a brilliant influence on the game.

“Denmark threw four forwards forward and we needed five [defenders] back.
“Raheem [Sterling] was such a threat that it was either going to be Phil [Foden] or Jack to get the solidity without the ball.
“We still needed to get that pressure up the pitch. We sank a little bit too deep for five minutes or so.
“We just needed to keep the ball and it took us five minutes to work that out. When we started to keep it, we were running the clock down with a lot less anxiety.”
After the match, Grealish posted on Instagram: “I love this team!! What a night at Wembley! One more to go.”
