The Prime Minister was among those heaping praise on team boss Southgate for masterminding Wednesday’s 2-1 win at Wembley.
Honours are decided twice a year by the Cabinet Office and announced at New Year and on The Queen’s official birthday in June.
In a major hint he would put the manager forward, Boris Johnson said yesterday: “I obviously wouldn’t want to anticipate anything the honours people may decide. But, clearly, I think Gareth Southgate has done an absolutely outstanding job.”
MPs and the public also joined calls for the 50-year-old England chief to be given a gong.
Julian Knight, Tory MP and chairman of the sports select committee, told The Sun that Southgate has “inspired a nation”

He said: “His contribution to football has been amazing. He definitely deserves a knighthood.” Meanwhile, fans nursed sore heads after sinking ten million pints.
During Wednesday’s game, nearly 60,000 a minute were pulled with a total of 6.8million downed.
Throughout the whole day, fans bought 9.7million pints. But the British Beer & Pub Association said that would have been nearer 12million with no Covid restrictions.
Chief executive Emma McClarkin said the Three Lions reaching the final was a huge boost to boozers.

Industry analysis shows that over England’s six games in the Euros, we have downed 21.1million pints, 1.2million gin and tonics, and three million glasses of wine.
The amount of boozing done yesterday no doubt added to emotions as celebrating fans poured into the streets from pubs and homes.
In Leeds, one man shed all his clothes and streaked along the A64 as cars drivers beeped their horns.
And in Headingley, a fan was caught by his mates after leaping off the roof of a Sainsbury’s store.

Traffic ground to a halt in central London as crowds blocked routes around Piccadilly Circus.
People clambered on to phone boxes and scaled the outside of Leicester Square Tube station. The Met Police made 23 arrests.
In Newcastle, traffic was also reduced to a crawl as supporters climbed on top of a bus while others banged on passing police cars, jumped up and down on bus shelters and leapt over taxis. One onlooker said: “I have lived in Newcastle all my life and never seen it like this. It was mental.”
In Leicester, crowds hurled plastic street bollards at each other.
And in Majorca, Spanish police used pepper spray and batons to try and clear streets in Magaluf.

Some went even further in showing their support. Courtney Harrison, 22, has had “It’s Coming Home” tattooed on her ankle.
The carer, of Workington, Cumbria, said: “I don’t even like football. My friends think I’m mad, although a few are thinking of doing the same before the final.”
Mum-of-three Lyndzi Harding, 35, of Diss, Norfolk, had her body painted in England colours with number ten on her back.

And he tipped his countrymen to also go all the way thanks to ex-Manchester City chief Roberto Mancini building a 33-game unbeaten run and a “proven defensive” record.
Ancelotti has been linked with his former Everton striker Richarlison as well as France frontman Kylian Mbappe after returning to the Bernabeu last month.
And his wily reputation will only have been strengthened by his successful breakdown of a thrilling, fluctuating Euros tournament.
Italy and England were both unbeaten group winners on seven points.
The Azzurri then squeezed past Austria after extra time and Belgium before overcoming Spain in a semi-final shootout following Tuesday’s 1-1 draw.
Meanwhile, the Three Lions notched a solid 2-0 win over Germany, a rampant 4-0 victory over Ukraine and Wednesday night’s tense but deserved 2-1 defeat of Denmark after extra time.
Premier League winners City provided three England starters in Raheem Sterling, John Stones and Kyle Walker, plus sub Phil Foden.

And City’s Champions League final conquerors Chelsea had Mason Mount in the England midfield, with Reece James unused on the bench.
Ancelotti said of England’s hopes: “There are six players returning from the Champions League final, a very important number for the competition.”
And during the group stages he added: “I said it before the European Championship started, and I repeat it now: I see England and Italy in the final.
“The first results seem to support my prediction. I hope it ends just like that.”
He was also gushing in his praise of Italy, saying: ” It is a great surprise and at the same time the novelty of the tournament.
“Because he (Roberto Mancini) plays offensive football, without any calculation, has a proven defensive organisation and has the youth that guarantees running and enthusiasm.”

Any victory parade is also expected to be delayed until after Freedom Day on July 19 so jubilant supporters can join their heroes free from curbs on crowds.
It comes as a whopping 300,000 footie-mad Brits have signed a petition calling for a bank holiday this Monday if we beat Italy in the finals.
While Chancellor Rishi Sunak predicted a victory will fuel a mini economic boom as euphoric fans go on a spending splurge after the win against Denmark.
Boris remained tight-lipped about the secret plans as he was quizzed on calls for a national day off while out on a visit in London.
He said: “I think that would be tempting fate – lets see.”
The PM has ruled out springing a surprise bank holiday on bosses this Monday as it will be too close to the final on Sunday night.

But he is considering holding one in August, when social distancing and restrictions on big groups meeting will have been swept away.
As football frenzy reaches fever pitch, the PM urged bosses to be soft on workers who turn up late nursing monster hangovers next week.
Around eight million lionhearts have booked the day off to recover from monster hangovers after Sunday night’s do-or-die decider against Italy.
Fan fever led to around one in four of the nation’s 32 million workers to schedule annual leave on Monday – double the number on normal Mondays in July.
Millions more are expected to throw sickies, leaving offices, factories, building sites and roads half empty as we recover after the historic soccer showdown.
Asked if he would urge leniency on cheeky workers turning up late, the PM’s spokesman said: “We would want businesses who feel able to consider it if they can.

“But we recognise it will vary depending on the business and company.”
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer backed calls for a bank holiday.
He told The Sun: “Gareth Southgate and our England heroes have made history and made us all incredibly proud.
“If we win on Sunday, the country should get the chance to celebrate it properly, I’d absolutely back a bank holiday and I hope bosses are flexible on Monday morning.”
England’s awesome cup run has lifted the entire country and is set to become the springboard for an economic recovery after months of covid lockdown misery.
Predicting  amini boom off the back of their dazzling performance, Mr Sunak said: “The team has brought an enormous amount of joy to the country after a very difficult year.
“Consumer confidence is important to our country and our economy because we are a consumption driven economy. The football just adds to it.

“Consumer confidence has already returned to pre crisis levels. And things that make us feel good are good for the economy.”
Employers were yesterday urged to embrace the footy feelgood factor set to fuel a £12 billion boost for the economy.
Beer sales alone this month are worth £1.5 billion with the same being spent on food for England games, Centre for Retail Research studies show.
Analysts say happy people spend more and are more productive at work – which boosts company turnover injecting up to £9 billion into the economy.
The Centre for Economics and Business Research said: “The Euros are breathing new life into spending.”
The Federation of Small Businesses said: “A good run is good for the economy and great for the nation’s spirits after the past year.”

Officers discovered more than 200 people outside of the property who were also blocking the entire road.
On their arrival officers then went into one of the houses and issued the hefty fine to its occupants for breaching Covid rules.
Supt Mark Runacres said: “Officers accessed one of the properties and the occupants were issued with a £10,000 fixed penalty notice for breaching COVID-19 legislation and sound equipment was seized.
“Enquiries are ongoing to identify and issue an equivalent fixed penalty notice to those responsible for playing the loud music from the second property.

The police officer added that the parties had caused “significant disruption” to people living nearby and had “put public safety at risk”.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s final, he added: “We have well-practised plans in place for the conclusion of the tournament this weekend, including high-visibility proactive patrols, to allow people to enjoy themselves but more importantly, to stay safe.

“Few people have been able to attend games or socialise and watch matches together over the past year and we’re not trying to stop people having fun.
“However, we would ask the public and businesses to make sure they continue to comply with legal restrictions around COVID-19 and follow the current health advice.”

That was his fourth goal in three knockout games for the Three Lions, after a goalless group stage, and it was enough to seal a showdown with Italy in Sunday’s final.
However, his hot-streak came after he was subbed in England’s first two matches in the competition.
Another duck in the last group game against Czech Republic followed and that led to some questioning whether the wantaway Tottenham star should continue to lead the attack.
Now former Manchester United and Spurs star Berbatov believes the England captain can tell those doubters to do one.
Speaking to Betfair, the Bulgarian said: “Harry Kane has been excellent in the knockout stages.
“He received some criticism in the group stages but Kane can tell his critics to f*** off.
“Even great players have their ups and downs. Even when he wasn’t scoring he was doing a lot for the team. But now the goals are coming.”
Kane’s extra-time winner came in fortuitous circumstances after his penalty was initially saved by Danish keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

But he reacted fastest to slot home the rebound and cement his status as a national hero.
Berbatov added: “The pressure on him with the penalty against Denmark was immense.
“You cannot imagine what it feels like to take a penalty with a nation’s hopes on your shoulders.
“As a player you know that everyone is depending on you, even if you don’t want to think about it.
“It wasn’t a good penalty but he got a bit of luck.”
