Boss who sacked England fan for pulling sickie to go to Denmark match insists ‘we had no choice – she lied’

A BOSS who sacked an England fan for pulling a sickie to go to the Euro 2020 semi-final against Denmark insisted they had “no choice”.Nina Farooqi found herself in hot water after cameras caught her and her friend jumping and screaming after the ball hit the back of the net.

But she realised the game was up after she ended up on TVCredit: Stacey Dooley/Instagram
The 37-year-old had wrapped an England flag around her and was seated right behind the goal at Wembley for the magical moment on Wednesday night as the Three Lions defeated Denmark 2-1 after extra time.
But she was brought back down to earth with a bump when her boss called her the morning after to fire her for pulling a sickie and going to the historic game.
Charles Taylor, director at Composite Prime where Nina worked, said she had “breached her contract”.
He said: “It’s an exciting time for everyone in England and given the opportunity, we would have encouraged attendance to such an important football match. Unfortunately on this occasion our employee lied, taking one day off sick to attend the football match on Wednesday.
“This was in breach of her employment contract and so we had no choice but to take the appropriate action. As a business we value honesty and integrity, and we don’t tolerate any employee taking advantage of our policies.
“Like many businesses will be doing across the county, our staff will be having Monday morning off to hopefully recover from celebrating an England win.”
Nina, from Ilkley, Bradford, had pulled a sickie to go to the game with her pal who had won a last minute ticket in a ballot.
Speaking to The Telegraph, Nina said: “It’s mixed emotions: we’re through to the final, I’m still on that high, but I’ve also lost my job.
“My friend won the ticket in her work ballot, and knew I’d do anything to get to the game – there was no way I was going to turn it down.
“This hasn’t come around since 1996, I vividly remember crying on my mum’s sofa when Gareth Southgate missed his penalty, and the football fan in me just couldn’t do it. Football is my life.”

The huge footie fan thought that it was unlikely that her work would approve her last-minute day off as they were short staffed.
She was nervous after realising that their seats were right behind the goal, but thought that in a crowd of 66,000 people she might get away with it.
But after checking her phone at half time, when England scored their equaliser, she realised that her cover had been completely blown.
Nina said: “We were all over the news, my face was on every television screen across the world – I had friends from Australia and America telling me they’d seen me.
“I was even on Stacey Dooley’s Instagram story. My phone blew up. The whole world had seen me celebrating. The rational part of me thought, ‘oh no, is this going to come back to haunt me?'”

Despite rushing back to Yorkshire on the 6am train, Nina was told not to bother coming in as the bosses at her office had spotted her.
She added: “They said they’d seen I’d been at the game, and I was honest about why I did it. But I didn’t get any sympathy at all and they said that’s it.
“That’s their call and the consequence of what I did. There is a bit of regret, no one wants to get fired, but then also I would have hated the regret of missing out. I’d do it all over again.”

Farooqi also undertakes work as a freelance photographer and video producer in men’s football and across the Women’s Super League.
She said that her friends within the footballing community have been fully supporting her since she lost her job.
Nina said: “They have all been incredible, and it will be incredible to watch the final with them on Sunday at home.”

Fury as Gary Neville insists booing national anthems is ‘not an attack’ after England charged for jeering Denmark song

Neville tweeted on Friday morning: “When I played in different countries our national anthem was booed, I always took it as the opposition fans trying to unsettle us, drown our fans out and never took it as some kind of attack on us as people.
“Same when we did it to other teams. Is it really that bad and disrespectful?”
The ex-England assistant manager’s comments were rejected by many on Twitter, with one replying: “It’s disrespectful for anybody to do it.”
While another added: “It’s the lack of class. Can’t see anyway around it.”
But many of his followers agreed with him, with one replying: “Exactly. It’s only the non-football fans that don’t get it.”
While another tweeted: “Completely agree. It’s about generating a hostile atmosphere towards the opponent and making Wembley as much of a fortress as possible!
“Genuinely don’t believe 95 per cent of fans do it as a disrespectful thing.”

The FA have been charged by Uefa for fans booing the Danish national anthem and expect to receive a substantial fine from European football’s governing body.
England supporters have also been accused of shining a laser pen in goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel’s eyes just before Harry Kane’s penalty and ‘letting off fireworks’.
Italy fans, meanwhile, united with Spain supporters to jeer Londoners chanting ‘football’s coming home’ during their semi-final clash.

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has also given his view on the boo boys.
He tweeted: “If you’re lucky enough to get a ticket for the final, please, please don’t boo the Italian anthem.
“It’s an absolutely belter and worth listening to. It’s bloody rude, disrespectful and utterly classless.”

The undefeated champion, who hung up his gloves last year, is convinced England’s pace will prove too much for Italy in Sunday’s historic showdown at Wembley.
Nurmagomedov said: “England have very good and young Lions. It’s a very good team with Sterling, Kane, Mount, Phillips, Walker and Pickford.
“They’re a very good team and they’re going to play at home. The last time they won was in 1966.
“After that they don’t win nothing but right now they have a bold team.
“Italy have a big chance because they are a very experienced team with guys like Chiellini and Immobile.
“But in my opinion England have to win because they have speed. Italy have the experience but England have a very good, young team with speed.
“I hope England are going to win. I think they deserve it.”

Excited fans cheered as the newlywed couple kissed and hugged in Shoreditch
With Covid restrictions in place, the pair from London had just 38 friends and family at their ceremony in Islington Town Hall.
But by that evening, they were showered in congratulations by hundreds of Three Lions supporters.
When they booked their wedding day – on their eight-year anniversary – they had no idea their big day would clash with England’s victorious semi-final match.
Jay said: “After the ceremony, we had a restaurant booked out for all our friends and family at 6pm
“But there was a pub across the road so we were keeping track on the match by listening to the cheers and checking our phones.”
With the win secured, the blushing bride and groom took to the streets – still in their tuxedo and stunning white gown.
Artist Rengin, who runs a small business with her new husband, said: “When we went to our hotel in Shoreditch we checked in around midnight and we dropped off our bags and decided to go straight out to outside Boxpark where there was a really nice atmosphere.
“It was really nice because obviously I was in my gown and everyone was congratulating us.
The couple stole the show in Shoreditch after England’s win

“There were so many people and when they saw us they just ambushed us in a nice way. It really topped off our night.
“It was for sure a night to remember and it felt like England were bringing it home just for us.”
Video shows fans, who spilt out onto the street, surrounding the pair after the squad made it to the country’s first major tournament final in 55 years.
Crowds gathered around them demanding a speech, and when Jay calmed the crowd he simply let out a roar saying “It’s coming home!”
Despite the fact that the couple are no strangers to attention, as together they run a YouTube account with 80,000 subscribers, they were still shocked by the reaction from the crowd.
Rengin said: “There were obviously so many fans that were out and had been drinking and celebrating but we were not expecting that that amount of people would approach us but it was a really nice experience.”

And Jay added: “What wasn’t on video was, we went down the road and a completely different massive group started cheering for us again and they lifted me up and carried me and were throwing me up in the air.
“It was a bit insane having that many eyes on us.
“It was just an amazing feeling to have everyone smiling and congratulating us. Really positive radiating vibes.”
On Wednesday night, the nation backed the boys for two hours during the electric semi-final in packed pubs, bars, front rooms and in Wembley itself.
England fans joined the players in singing the iconic Sweet Caroline as the team celebrated their monumental win after a nail-biting finish in extra time.
After a tense 90 minutes finished 1-1, Three Lions fans were forced to endure the familiar pain of extra time in a semi-final.
In the first few minutes, England continued to drive forward – but could not find the back of the net.

But in the 12th minute, Raheem Sterling went crashing to the ground – winning England a PENALTY.
Harry Kane’s shot was saved by Kasper Schmeichel – but the Spurs ace smashed the ball into the net on the rebound – putting England into the lead.
When the final whistle finally blew on a historic win – scenes of jubilation erupted across the country.

Harry Kane could get knighthood alongside Gareth Southgate if England win Euro 2020

HARRY Kane could get a knighthood alongside Gareth Southgate if England win Euro 2020. The England skipper, who netted the winner against Denmark in the semifinal, could be rewarded if the Three Lions win their first final in 55 years.

Ministers are scrambling to find ways to mark the Three Lions’ achievement should they triumph against Italy on Sunday night.
The captain has been pivotal to the team’s success in the knockout round of Euro 2020, bagging crucial goals against Germany and Ukraine.
And it was England’s talisman Kane who netted the winner in Extra Time against Denmark – sending Wembley and the nation into dreamland.
Kane already has an MBE and is certain to be rewarded if he leads England to victory  – even if it is not ultimately a knighthood.
A government source told The Times that officials were in “uncharted territory” in their approach to how to recognise the team’s success.
Former England rugby manager Clive Woodward received a knighthood after his team won the World Cup in 2003 – though the squad was given lesser honours.
Other England football legends have had to wait years for a knighthood, including the World Cup-winning 1966 team.
Bobby Moore, the captain, was appointed OBE but never received a knighthood before his death in 1993.
Meanwhile only two of the ’66 starting line-up received knighthoods. Sir Bobby Charlton received his in 1994, while Geoff Hurst, who bagged a hat-trick in the final against West Germany, was not knighted until 1998.

The Sun reported yesterday how gaffer Gareth Southgate, who was appointed OBE in 2019 after England’s legendary World Cup run the year before, could also be knighted.
Southgate would become just the third Three Lions manager to be knighted after Sir Alf Ramsey in 1967 and Sir Bobby Robson in 2002.
He said: “If we win, surely that knighthood is nailed on!
“Gareth will have made history and it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.”
Meanwhile, bosses have been urged to let staff start late on Monday after the clash – as millions of employees face a rough morning at work after boozy celebrations.

The TUC, which represents most trade unions in the UK, has today urged firms to discuss flexible working arrangements with employees – with millions likely to call in sick if England win.
Downing Street said employers who are able to should be flexible about allowing staff to go into work late on Monday or take the day off if England triumph in the final.
The PM’s official spokesman said: “We would want businesses who feel able to consider it if they can, but we recognise it will vary depending on the business and company.”

Bank holiday petition calling for day off if England win Euro 2020 passes 300,000 signatures

A PETITION calling for a bank holiday if England wins the Euros on Sunday has passed a whopping 300,000 signatures – in less than 24 hours. The man behind the call, Lee Jones, organised the petition just yesterday after arguing it was “beneficial and sensible” to give the country the day off.

And since then, hundreds of thousands of people have added their names – and Boris Johnson refused to rule out a day off for millions of hungover workers.
The PM remained tight-lipped when quizzed on any plans yesterday.
He said: “I think that would be tempting fate – let’s see.”
But the Sun has learnt officials are already drawing up proposals for a national day off so fans can celebrate a Three Lions triumph free from hated Covid restrictions.
It’s understood it could take place in August.
And Mr Johnson urged bosses to be soft on workers who turn up late nursing monster hangovers next week.
Around eight million lionhearts have booked the day off to recover from monster hangovers after Sunday night’s do-or-die decider against Italy.

England will take on Italy in the final
Fan fever led to around one in four of the nation’s 32m workers to schedule annual leave on Monday – double the number on normal Mondays in July.
And plenty of bosses will be lenient with their staff, while some schools say kids can come in late without punishment.
HR experts and unions yesterday urged bosses to let staff take Monday off to avoid clashes with workers who will phone in sick if denied leave.

Headteacher Gemma Donnelly, of Braywick Court School in Bray, Berks, was among many telling parents she will accept pupils not coming in until 10.30am after staying up late to watch.
TUC boss Frances O’Grady said: “Bosses should talk to staff and try to let people who want to watch games do so — either at work, or at home — and claim back working time afterwards.”
Meanwhile, Chancellor Rishi Sunak predicted a win will fuel a £12billion euphoric spending splurge.
England are now favourites amid a betting spree at bookies.

And streets will be packed with revellers partying into the nightCredit: AP
But Gareth Southgate and co will be hoping history doesn’t repeat itself as the country gears up for our biggest game for 55 years.
England have won just ONE major tournament – the stunning 4-2 victory against West Germany to win the 1966 World Cup.
But now captain Harry Kane has the chance to lead his troops into the record books in front of 60,000 screaming fans at Wembley Stadium.
Hopes are high after England laid the semi-final curse to rest with a fantastic 2-1 victory over Denmark on Wednesday night at Wembley.
But it’ll be a nail-biting clash – and the Lions have never beaten Italy in a major tournament.
The last time they faced each other was at the 2014 World Cup, with the Italians winning 2-1.
Football hero Sir Geoff Hurst told Good Morning Britain today an England win would be bigger than the victory in 1966.
“The timing couldn’t be better – we’re fortunate to hold the semis and finals in this country,” he said.

“Many of the crowd on Sunday will have had issues relating to pandemic – that does elevate this game particularly.”
And after the win 55 years ago, he said celebrations were much more mundane.
“I went home the morning after the game, cleaned the car and cut the lawn – that’s what you did in those days,” he said.

Ministers ground flights packed with ticketless Italy fans for the Euro 2020 final against England

MINISTERS have grounded flights from Italy to STOP a Roman invasion for the Euros final. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has ordered airlines to cancel flights to stop thousands of ticketless Italians turning up at Wembley for the do or die clash.

He revealed canned direct flights to stop thousands of ticketless Romans breaking quarantine rules to descend on Wembley to support their side on Sunday.
But around 1,000 Italian fans WILL be allowed to skip isolation rules under an agreement with UEFA struck during the tournament,
Mr Shapps said: “We’ve still got a very strict border regime in place, including at the moment amber list countries, which includes Italy.
“If we detect people are coming in just for the football, they won’t be allowed in and in fact lots of charter flights and direct flights have been cancelled on that basis.”
He added: “I have to say every time we pointed out to a charter company that that looks like a flight that’s just bringing football fans in, they have cancelled it, so there have been no direct flights for that purpose.”
Italy’s semi-final clash with Spain was packed with Roman fans – but only those who live in the UK.

But under an exemption Italian fans based on the continent will be allowed over but only with an official UEFA ticket package.
They won’t have to isolate for ten days, but will have to stay in a designated hotel, and only be allowed out for the final.
They will still have to produce a negative pre-departure test and will be kept in tight bubble.

The Italian Football Federation will dish out the tickets costing £525 each to fans.
Another 2,500 Uefa VIPs and executives will also be able to skip quarantine for the final. More
