England ratings: Pickford should be proud while maverick Jack Grealish should have got on earlier in Euro 2020 final

JORDAN PICKFORD should hold his head highest after England’s Euro 2020 final shootout agony against Italy.Luke Shaw’s emphatic second-minute opener was cancelled out by Leonardo Bonucci bundling the Azzurri level as the Three Lions swapped early energy for backfoot nervousness in the second half.

Jack Grealish came on to show glimpses of his genius but it proved too late to turn the tide as Italy eventually triumphed on penaltiesCredit: PA

And after a tense extra time, Italy lifted the trophy with a 3-2 shootout success as England subs Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all missed with poor spot-kicks.
Here’s our player-by-player assessment after England’s first final since 1966 World Cup glory began perfectly but ended with more penalty misery.
JORDAN PICKFORD 9 – STAR MAN
IN the end his penalty heroics came to little because of two silly substitutions. But sbould be proud. It is not just the keeper’s hair which has grown during these Finals.
    KYLE WALKER 8
YOU’LL never beat Kyle Walker (except for once in extra time)! But it was another assured performance from the pacey Manchester City defender.
    JOHN STONES 8
Another City defender, another outstanding display. Incredible to think he was not even in the picture for club or country not so long ago.
    HARRY MAGUIRE 8
DESERVES all the vodkas and Jager’s for his defensive display and coolness in shootout.

    KIERAN TRIPPIER 7
HE set up Shaw’s opener and his deliveries caused the Italians problems in the first half before he was subbed in the second.
    KALVIN PHILLIPS 8
THE Leeds ace went toe-to-toe with the Italy’s midfield and gave everything. Shame it neant nothing in the end.

    DECLAN RICE 8
WAS England’s best player before he was replaced by Jordan Henderson in the 74th minute.
    LUKE SHAW 8
CAPPED a fine Euro 2020 with his second-minute screamer. Shame England never built on it.

Declan Rice was impressive in the centre of midfield for the Three LionsCredit: Getty
    MASON MOUNT 6
THE CHELSEA attacker put in another lung-busting shift but did not react quick enough for Italy’s equaliser.
    HARRY KANE 7
SKIPPER started well with a brilliant pass to Trippier for Shaw’s opener, but was well shackled by the Italian defence and like his team faded. Pen never in doubt.

    RAHEEM STERLING 7
HAD been hailed as England’s player of the tournament but we saw only flashes of his brilliance. Scuffs too many final balls.

    SUBS
BUKAYO SAKA (for Tripper 71 mins) 5
THE Arsenal man was sent on to lift the lads after Italy’s leveller and showed some nice touches, except for his decisive pen.
    JORDAN HENDERSON (Rice 73) 6
THE LIverpool skipper’s experience could not help restore the Three Lions’ lead before he became a last-gasp sacrificial sub.
    JACK GREALISH (Mount 100) 7
VILLA’S maverick tried his best to spark England back into life. Should have been sent on earlier.
    MARCUS RASHFORD (Henderson 120) 4
SENT on specifically for the penalty shootout and hit the post. Football is cruel but such substitutions are risky.
    JADON SANCHO (Walker 120) 4
ANOTHER who proved the folly of the penalty sub. It ain’t the blooming NFL.
NOT USED: Ramsdale, Johnstone, Mings, Coady, Calvert-Lewin, James, Bellingham.

Jordan Pickford wins Euro 2020 Golden Glove after England keeper’s stunning tournament and FIVE clean sheets

ENGLAND goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has received the Euro 2020 Golden Glove award – despite final defeat to Italy. The 27-year-old kept five clean sheets during the tournament, two more than Italian stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

But the 27-year-old was devastated to lose the final against ItalyCredit: AFP
Pickford picked up the award after stopping Croatia, Scotland, Czech Republic, Germany and Ukraine from scoring.
He conceded just two goals during the tournament, the first being Denmark star Mikkel Damsgaard’s stunning free-kick in the semi-final.
Switzerland stopper Yann Sommer made the most saves at the Euros – 21 – with Pickford not appearing near the top of that list.
The Everton goalkeeper’s lack of action is testament to England’s defence, with a couple of defenders likely to be named in the team of the tournament.
Pickford has enjoyed a stellar summer, breaking the England record for most minutes without conceding.
He went 725 minutes without letting one in, surpassing Gordon Banks’ tally of 720 minutes – set during the World Cup in 1966.

Jordan Pickford finished the tournament with five clean sheets

But it did NOT prove to be a good omen as Italy defeated England at Wembley to win the Euros for the second time.
The game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes, with Leonardo Bonucci cancelling out Luke Shaw’s opener.
It went to penalties after neither team managed to get ahead in extra-time and Pickford heroically saved two – but England missed three.
The goalkeeper’s form has improved significantly since he grew his hair out at the beginning of the year.
Pickford has also matched Iker Casillas’ clean sheet record at the Euros, with the Spain goalkeeper letting just five in at Euro 2012.

England 1 Italy 1 (2-3 on penalties): Brave Three Lions lose Euro 2020 final after penalty shootout heartbreak AGAIN

AFTER 55 years of hurt, the most painful blow – and the most heroic failure – of them all.England’s most famous footballing anthem mentions ‘all those oh-so-nears’ but there had never been an oh-so-near as close as this one.

Gareth Southgate consoled Bukayo Saka after he bravely volunteered for the crucial fifth penalty, only to see it savedCredit: EPA
Even after a national phobia of penalties had been overcome, defeat arrived in an agonising shoot-out – Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho both brought in the dying moments specifically to take penalties and both missing, then poor young Bukayo Saka failing with the decisive kick.
It was agonising especially as Gareth Southgate’s side had produced a first half of controlled aggression, to the soundtrack of unrestrained bearpit hostility from the terraces.
Especially as they had gone ahead within two minutes and then gone ahead in the shoot-out too.
But just as football had been battering on the door, desperate to complete its journey home, the Italians slammed it shut.
England led their first final since in 1966 for 65 long minutes – but Italy controlled possession, played most of the football and ultimately just about deserved their victory.
Wembley was wild, almost anarchic. As the tackles snapped, the atmosphere crackled and the concrete literally shook.

But in the end it was a tale as old as time – England throwing it away, beaten by a better team.
We’ve heard so much about Southgate, the urbane, decent, intelligent statesman – but this performance, this whole night, had little to do with any of those qualities.
England relied on old-school qualities of grit and guts and graft and grind – but they were never quite enough.
There have been significant improvements from England since the last World Cup but ultimately there were too many similarities to that semi-final defeat by Croatia.
England ahead early, but sitting back too deep, allowing their opponents to control the midfield, conceding an equaliser midway through the second half and falling to a

Before the tournament, at least three of Southgate’s squad were anointed as the new Gazza.
But this lot were the heirs to the toothless, ruthless Nobby Stiles and the bloodied, bandaged Terry Butcher and Paul Ince.
For an hour at least, there was an almost murderous intent about everything England did – an utter conviction in every challenge, every block, every run, every pass.
It felt as if Southgate’s men had made a pact to leave every drop of blood, every ounce of sweat, every last teardrop from 55 years of hurt out on that Wembley turf.
That they did but it ended up in glorious failure.

England raced over fans to celebrate their goal after less than two minutes

The lie-ins will be long this morning, hangovers will be brutal and the memories of this night will ultimately be bitter.
Italy were unbeaten in 33 matches for a reason.
Theirs is a footballing nation renowned for defensive resilience and alley-cat cunning but this team of Roberto Mancini’s play with great attacking verve too.
Still, just 16 months from now, England will surely head to the World Cup in Qatar, with a respect they have not enjoyed for decades.
This has not been the most gifted England side of the last 55 years but it is undoubtedly the best team.
Prince George was seen celebrating Shaw’s goal in the stands with his mum and dad, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

Defenders who can all initiate attacks, forwards who all defend from the front and between them the extraordinary duo of Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips, the missing links from that near miss of Russia three years ago.
When the sting of defeat fades, we will remember the efficiency of that ground-breaking defeat of Germany, the dreamlike ease of a quarter-final romp against Ukraine and that joyous comeback victory over Denmark.
This march to the final was brilliantly engineered by Southgate, even after a chaotic build-up, with injuries to key players and no meaningful warm-up games.
But there is always a conspiracy of fates whenever a grand plan comes together.
It is eight years since Southgate was interviewed for the manager’s job at League One Sheffield United and was rejected for being ‘too nice’. The man who got the job, David Weir, was sacked after 13 games, winning just once.
Jordan Pickford was forced into a smart save to keep England in the lead in the second half
Leonardo Bonucci stabbed home Italy’s equaliser as their pressure eventually paid off
Italy celebrated after equalising at Wembley through Bonucci’s goal-line tap-in
Sam Allardyce might not have been the victim of a sting, drinking pints of wine and Southgate may never have inherited the ‘impossible job’ in the first place, never mind redefining it as an entirely possible role.
Luke Shaw and John Stones were in long international exiles until the spring, Phillips had never played top-flight football last year, Rice might have stuck with Ireland…
Harry Maguire may not have been included in a standard 23-man squad after the ankle injury which kept him out of the previous two games.
Yet here they all were, as a perfectly-crafted unit, ready to embrace the game of their lives.
Southgate sprang a surprise by naming a back five – Kieran Trippier replacing Saka – but by this stage the England boss could have selected nine defenders and nobody would have doubted him.
Wembley Way had been a scene of anarchy and carnage hours before kick-off – the English undoubtedly proving themselves European champions of binge drinking and al-fresco urination.
Hundreds of ticketless fans were intent on storming the gates, which had to be locked for some time.

Jordan Pickford saved two penalties in the shootout, doing what he could to bring football homeCredit: AFP
Italy eventually ran out winners after Gianluigi Donnarumma’s shootout heroicsCredit: Reuters
It certainly wasn’t the decent, inclusive modern England which Southgate had been campaigning for.
But inside just 117 seconds England were ahead, Shaw’s half-volley from Trippier’s sweeping centre – who said five at the back was negative?
Italy passed and moved with speed and intelligence but until Leonardo Bonucci poked home after England failed to deal with a corner midway through the second half, it felt as if there was a steadfast belief inside Wembley that Southgate’s men would not be moved.
They were ragged after the equaliser, they improved in extra-time, but after all of the practice, all of the psychology, all of the study, three penalty misses out of five sealed a familiar fate.

The goalkeeper had an excellent game against the world’s No1 ranked team, making several quality saves to keep Italy’s lead in tact.
The Predator range is famous for its boots, with Premier League legends Steven Gerrard and David Beckham wearing them during their careers.
But top goalkeepers, such as Donnarumma, are sporting Predators on their hands too.

Cristiano Ronaldo wins Golden Boot 2020 after beating England heroes Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling

The 35-year-old crashed out of the competition during the round-of-16 following his country’s 1-0 loss to Belgium.

However, Ronaldo also boasts an assist and led the Golden Boot charts due to UEFA’s criteria in handing out the award.
Four of CR7’s goals at Euro 2020 came from the penalty spot with his sole effort from open-play coming in the 4-2 defeat to Germany.
And Ronaldo was ultimately crowned the winner after England heroes Kane and Sterling failed to score in the Euro 2020 final against Italy.
To add insult to injury, the Three Lions’ heroes then missed out on lifting the great prize of all as they lost in a penalty shoot-out.
Meanwhile, Gianluigi Donnarumma has been crowned Euro 2020’s Player of the Tournament.

The towering keeper saved Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka’s spot-kicks as England suffered a heartbreaking shootout defeat in the final.
Donnarumma, 22, kept three clean sheets during the tournament having lived up to his sky-high potential.
He was also the hero in the semi-final as Italy triumphed over Spain in another penalty shootout.

ONE of Britain’s least-loved baby names is set to make a comeback after more than 20 years in obscurity – thanks to England’s Euros success.Neil Diamond’s 1969 hit ‘Sweet Caroline’ has become the tournament’s unofficial anthem, sparking a revival of interest from parents in the retro girl’s name.

The moniker, which means ‘strong’ was last popular in 1996 when it was ranked at 182 in the national baby name charts.
But last year it had sunk to 1,119, meaning just a handful tots are given the name each year.
However, new research reveals a third of parents would now consider the name for a girl.
Overall, the Three Lions success has seen a surge of parents planning patriotic baby names.
One in eight mums and 23 per cent of dads say they would back a footie-related choice if England win, the study from the Baby Names Envy podcast found.
The fastest-rising football name is Sterling, which rocketed 630 places up the name charts last year.
While it is still only ranked at 1,369 in the boys’ chart, experts predict it will hit the top 500 this year thanks to goal machine Raheem.

    CAROLINE COMEBACK
Also popular is Kane, loved by 18 per cent of parents.
The most popular player name is Jack, with 46 per cent of parents happy to consider it.
Meanwhile Mason is now the nation’s 42rd most popular boys name, up from 127 in 1996
However, 79 per cent of mums would even consider the wacky moniker Lion and 21 per cent England if the team lift the trophy.

Baby names expert SJ Strum from the Baby Names Envy podcast said: “Football is the beautiful game and it is responsible for some beautiful names too.
“Caroline is a strong and elegant name which is long overdue for a comeback.
“And if you want to honour the squad, what could be better than naming your son or daughter with one of their names?”

It was no more than Italy deserved after England could barely get hold of the ball.
But Three Lions fans were adamant Bryan Cristante handballed in the build up to Bonucci’s slotting home.
In truth, the ball appeared to hit the substitute’s shoulder – but England fans were still not impressed.
Thomas Trangmar was stunned it was ‘not picked up by VAR’, with many labelling it as ‘blatant handball’.
One Chelsea fan was fuming that the goal came from an ‘Italy handball’ and yet England ‘have Uefa in their pocket’.
That came after The Three Lions’ route to the final came in for some criticism for having so many games on home turf.
Italy’s leveller took the game to extra-time and after 30 nail-biting minutes, England fell to a cruel shootout defeat.
Luke Dolan tweeted that England had been dealt with unfairly TWICE, and that as well as the goal being as a result of a handball, Raheem Sterling should have been awarded a penalty.
