Zlatan Ibrahimovic OUT of Euro 2020 as AC Milan striker needs treatment on knee injury

AC MILAN star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has NOT ruptured his anterior crucial ligament – but will still miss the Euros.Sweden’s official Twitter account has confirmed the 39-year-old has damaged his ACL and will miss the rest of the season.

Although the ligament is not broken, he will not be fit enough to play at this summer’s tournament.
Sweden coach Janne Andersson said: “I spoke to Zlatan Ibrahimovic today, who unfortunately told me his injury will prevent his participation in the European Championship this summer.
“Of course it is sad, especially for Zlatan, but for us too. I hope that he is back on the pitch again as soon as possible.”
The former Paris Saint-Germain star announced his intention to play at Euro 2020 in March.
He initially retired from international duty after Euro 2016, missing Sweden’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals in 2018.
Ibrahimovic made his international return two months ago, starting in the 1-0 home win against Georgia.

England boast the most-valuable squad of all Euro 2020 nations
He was initially expected to be part of Sweden’s 26-man squad for the Euros but will now focus on getting himself fit for the start of next season.
Ibrahimovic is currently being investigated by Uefa for allegedly being financially interested in a betting company and could be banned from playing if found guilty.
The Swede has been in excellent form this season, scoring 15 goals in 19 Serie A appearances for Milan.
His impressive performances have seen him rewarded with a new one-year deal at the San Siro, meaning he is set to play top flight football at the age of 40.

Milan are also on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League as they sit third in Serie A with two games to go.
And Ibrahimovic isn’t the only veteran to sign a new one-year deal at a big European club, with his ex-teammate Edinson Cavani agreeing an extension at Manchester United.
Another one of the Swede’s former colleagues – ex-LA Galaxy star Michael Ciani – has claimed Ibrahimovic hated the Uruguayan striker during their PSG days.

The 10 most expensive players to miss Euro 2021, including Erling Haaland, Jan Oblak and Miralem Pjanic

THE SUMMER’S European Championship promises to be a festival full of football’s top stars. But not everybody can make it…

From up-and-coming youngsters to established stars, a whole host of players will have to watch Euro 2021 from their living room.
Here, SunSport looks at the most expensive players, via Transfermarkt, who missed out on qualification.
    #1 – Erling Haaland – Norway – £99m
There is no doubt that Erling Haaland would have been a fascinating watch this summer, had Norway not been knocked out of qualification play-offs by Serbia.
Already, the striker has six goals in 10 games for Norway and is now considered among the best players in the world thanks to a stunning season at Borussia Dortmund.
    #2 – Jan Oblak – Slovenia – £81m
Had Jan Oblak played for England or Spain, he might be widely seen as the world’s best shot-stopper with a bucketload of international caps.
Alas, Slovenia have not qualified for a major tournament since the Atletico Madrid star’s debut and he spent years as second-choice to Inter Milan’s Samir Handanovic.
Jan Oblak’s Slovenia crashed out of Euro 2021 qualifying at the hands of Poland and AustriaCredit: Getty Images – Getty
    #3 – Sergej Milinkovic-Savic – Serbia – £63m
Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has long been tipped to leave the Serie A club and sign for the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea.
The opportunity to impress on the big stage this summer was lost with Serbia’s penalty shootout defeat to Scotland last November.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic could not lead his team past ScotlandCredit: PA:Press Association
    #4 – Miralem Pjanic – Bosnia – £36m
Few know that Miralem Pjanic represented Luxembourg at youth level before switching to the country of his birth in 2008.
Having featured at a World Cup for Bosnia, the Barcelona star will miss Euro 2021 after Northern Ireland knocked his side out of the play-offs.
    =4 – Martin Odegaard – Norway – £36m
With Haaland and Martin Odegaard, Norway should be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
But this summer comes too soon for the attacking midfielder, who has starred on loan at Arsenal.

    #6 – Filip Kostic – Serbia – £28.8m
Serbia are the most-represented nation on this list having been the favourites to win their play-off path.
Eintracht Frankfurt winger Filip Kostic will miss Euro 2021 despite being a star of Bundesliga for a number of years.
    =6 – Kostas Manolas – Greece – £28.8m
Greece are now far from the team that won Euro 2004 and were a common fixture at major tournaments.
Coming third in Group J of qualifying, behind Finland, and a poor Nations League performance deprived Napoli defender Kostas Manolas his first Euros.
Euro 2004 winners Greece haven’t reached a major tournament since 2014Credit: AP:Associated Press
    #8 – Nikola Milenkovic – Serbia – £25.2m
Serbia must be wondering what might have been after stumbling to Ukraine and Portugal in Group B before the penalty heartbreak at the hands of Scotland.
Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic, 23, is one of the starlets who would have fancied making a name for themselves at Euro 2020 with Juventus reportedly tracking his progress.
    #9 Marash Kumbulla – Albania – £24.3m
Albania made their only trip to a major finals in France four years ago, famously beating Romania having almost snatched a point off the hosts.
Roma’s 21-year-old defender Marash Kumbulla would have been a key talent to watch had his nation made it out of qualifying.
Roma signed Marash Kumbulla for £11m from Hellas Verona last summerCredit: Reuters

    #10 – Stefan Savic – Serbia – £22m
It is little surprise that Atletico Madrid’s LaLiga title challenge has been built on a very strong defence.
The star of Diego Simeone’s backline has been former Manchester City man Stefan Savic, who watched on as Serbia were knocked out in last year’s play-offs.

Why isn’t Virgil van Dijk playing for Holland at Euro 2020?

VIRGIL VAN DIJK has been one of the best defenders in world football over the past three years. But the Liverpool centre-back has had to sit the majority of this season out with a nasty knee injury he sustained in his side’s 2-2 draw with rivals Everton early in the campaign.

Van Dijk’s Holland side will be competing in this summer’s European Championships, but the Dutch stalwart won’t be there.
Why won’t Van Dijk be playing for Holland at Euro 2020?
Van Dijk’s anterior cruciate ligament injury occurred when Everton goalkeeper collided with the defender during their Merseyside derby clash last October.
Ever since then, the £75million man has been out of action and on the injury table.
And although he’s nearing recovery, Van Dijk has ruled himself out of competing at this summer’s Euros with Holland.

“I feel physically it is the right decision that I’ve decided not to go to the Euros and to go into my last phase of rehab in the off-season,” said Van Dijk.
“It’s tough, but I’m at peace with it.
“I think the decision to not go is the right decision in the grand scheme of things.
“I am very gutted to miss the Euros, to miss the European Championship and leading out my own country there, but things have been like they have and I have to accept it – we all have to accept it.
Virgil van Dijk will not play for Holland at thos summer’s EurosCredit: PA
Van Dijk will be hoping to return for the first game of Liverpool’s 2021/22 Premier League campaign instead.
“I am aiming for that and it looks like it is going to happen, but obviously you never know in football and you never know in life, but I am feeling very positive and ready to go. We’ll see,” he added. More

    Group A
TurkeyItalyWales – Daniel James, Dylan LevittSwitzerland
Winger Daniel James is nailed-on to make the Wales squad. The 23-year-old has started every single competitive fixture for his nation since March 2019.
Dylan Levitt, who’s currently on loan at Croatian club Istra 1961 could join his colleague having been a regular in recent Wales squads.
    Group B
    DenmarkFinlandBelgiumRussia
The only group without any United players.

    Group C
Netherlands – Donny van de BeekUkraineAustriaNorth Macedonia
Donny van de Beek will be back on the world stage having missed out on Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup. However, a starting role looks unlikely given his minutes since the arrival of Frank de Boer.
    Group D
England – Harry Maguire, Dean Henderson, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Luke Shaw, Jesse LingardCroatiaScotland – Scott McTominayCzech Republic
Group D sees the majority of Manchester United’s travelling contingent, by some distance.
Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford are dead certs to make Gareth Southgate’s squad and are likely to start the opening fixture.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is vying with the likes of Reece James, Kieran Tripper and Trent Alexander-Arnold for a spot and will probably miss out. UEFA expanding the permitted squad sizes from 23 to 26 could see in-form Mason Greenwood sneak in.

    Group E
Spain – David de GeaSweden – Victor LindelofPolandSlovakia
David de Gea should make the squad despite losing his position as United’s No.1. He also played second-fiddle to Robert Sanchez in Spain’s recent World Cup qualifiers.
    Group F
HungaryPortugal – Bruno FernandesFrance – Anthony Martial, Paul PogbaGermany
Every international tournament needs a Group of Death and this one features three of United’s biggest stars.
Bruno Fernandes’ outstanding campaign will see him line up at the heart of Portugal’s midfield. And he can expect a tussle with midfield partner Paul Pogba.
Anthony Martial will need to prove his fitness having sustained a serious knee injury in April.

    The favourites

    Harry Kane – 11/2
    Kylian Mbappe – 9/1
    Romelu Lukaku – 9/1
    Cristiano Ronaldo – 10/1

It’s no surprise to see these four leading the market. Harry Kane is the outright favourite at odds of 11/2.
The Tottenham talisman is currently the Premier League’s top scorer and has previous having finished as the leading goalscorer at the 2018 World Cup.
But there’s no shortage of competition with Kylian Mbappe is just behind at 9/1. France are considered favourites to take the top prize with the talented youngster their most in-form attacker.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who shared the award with five others in 2012, is available at 10/1 with Belgian superstar Romelu Lukaku a fraction ahead at 9s.

    Best of the rest

    Memphis Depay – 16/1
    Alvaro Morata – 20/1
    Antoine Griezmann – 20/1
    Ciro Immobile – 20/1
    Raheem Sterling – 20/1
    Serge Gnabry – 20/1
    Timo Werner – 20/1
    Eden Hazard – 25/1
    Olivier Giroud – 25/1
    Robert Lewandowski – 33/1

Some huge prices on offer – especially considering these are some of Europe’s most lethal finishers.
Poland’s Robert Lewandowski is the top scorer in Europe’s top five domestic leagues this season and can be backed at 33/1.
Italy’s Ciro Immobile, who wrestled the 2019-20 European Golden Boot away from Lionel Messi, is on offer at 20s.
And don’t forget Netherlands striker Memphis Depay at 16/1. He’s notched up 21 goals for Lyon this term and is his nation’s designated penalty taker.
