Brendan Rodgers claims James Maddison’s injury-plagued season cost him his place in England’s Euro’s squad.
He said: “James has been unfortunate the way the season has panned out.
“He didn’t start the season and it was difficult for him but then he got a run of games and was exceptional.
“He was creating and scoring goals. It was looking very good for him. Then, he’s picked up the injury and he hasn’t got back to the level of fitness he needs.”

    KAN DO ATTITUDE
France’s Euro 2020 hopes have received a massive boost after N’Golo Kante returned to Chelsea training today.
The midfielder took part in training on day one of the build-up to Saturday’s Champions League final clash with Manchester City.
Inspirational midfielder Kante has been struggling with a hamstring problem to the extent he missed Sunday’s Premier League finale at Aston Villa.
SunSports understands the Frenchman and compatriot Edouard Mendy both took part in full training with the rest of the group and then did a session on their own.

    ‘RUBBISH REPORTING’
Gareth Bale’s agent has rubbished reports in Spain that the Welsh star was hoping to retire after Euro 2020.
The forward is preparing to lead his nation at the next month’s showpiece after building up his fitness at Tottenham on a season-long loan from Real Madrid.
Bale, 31, scored 11 goals in just ten Premier League starts at Spurs but was hardly used by Jose Mourinho before the Portuguese boss was axed in April.
He still has a year remaining on his mega £600,000-a-week Madrid contract but Los Blancos are desperate to get him off the wage bill.
Spanish outlet ABC have claimed today that Bale is preparing to quit football at the end of Euro 2020.
It stated the ex-Southampton ace wanted to hang up his boots and attempt to forge a career as a pro golfer.
However, his agent Jonathan Barnett shot those rumours out of the water when asked about them by talkSPORT.
He said: “Sorry, I don’t speak about rubbish reporting.”

    THE ONES WHO GOT AWAY
England have named their provisional, 33-man squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 tournament.
And Three Lions fans will be left licking their lips ahead of next month’s competition after Gareth Southgate named one of the most exciting-looking groups ever.
For decades, England supporters have had to put up with uninspiring, humdrum squads, particularly since the so-called ‘Golden Generation’ called time on their careers.
During those years, a host of big-name, foreign Premier League players were being tipped to swap allegiances and represent England.
Even more recently, some superstars – including Erling Haaland – have been linked with a move to the Three Lions.
Here are some of the best players who could have chosen the Three Lions.

    AGBONLAHOR BACKS SOUTHGATE
Former Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Gareth Southgate’s decision not to include Patrick Bamford in his provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2020.
He told talkSPORT: “Bamford is very unlucky not to make it, but the sort of striker he is, Greenwood is better, Kane is better, and he’s similar to them.
“He’s not similar to Calvert-Lewin or Watkins, they can run the channels, they’re pests, they’ve got hold-up play. They’re different strikers.
“Bamford was in competition with Kane and Greenwood, and he’s not going to get in ahead of them.”

    HERE WE GO
England are now the favourites to win Euro 2020.

    WAN OF A KIND
Former Manchester United and England star Andrew Cole believes that Aaron Wan-Bissaka was unlucky not to make Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man Euro 2020 squad.
He told talkSPORT 2: “When anyone gets mentioned regarding the right-back position, they always say they’re not sure about players defensively, especially Alexander-Arnold.
“Wan-Bissaka is the opposite. Defensively, he’s brilliant. Going forward, he doesn’t attack as good as he rest of the boys.
“But defensively, he’s up there with the best of them.”

    LOW BAR
Hansi Flick has been announced as Joachim Low’s successor as Germany boss.
The World Cup-winning Low, 61, announced earlier this year that he’d be leaving his post with Die Mannschaft after the tournament.
Flick, his former assistant, had been approached by Spurs – following the news that he’d be departing Bayern Munich.
But the 56-year-old elected to to snub the North Londoners in favour of his country.

    KEEP CALM
Gareth Southgate insists he has no fears about his goalkeepers for the Euros – even though three of the four he has named in his squad have just ONE cap between them.
Jordan Pickford has come through a crisis in form to end the season well with Everton and is the clear first choice for England this summer.
Manchester United’s Dean Henderson is the back-up with Nick Pope injured but he only made his single appearances for the Three Lions in March.
Sam Johnstone of West Brom and Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale have never played at the highest level before – meaning England are woefully short of experience between the posts.
But Southgate said: “It doesn’t make me nervous because they’re the best we have and they’re the best available. We’re very unfortunate with the situation with Pope. He’s the one that we’ve given those more recent caps to.
“We know Jordan’s got great experience with us and we’ve got to prepare the others as best we can.
“We’ve known for a little period that the goalkeeping situation internationally for us is unusually inexperienced. The more experienced ones have found themselves out of their club teams and even those guys are limited caps.
“You’ve got to go back to the Joe Harts and perhaps Fraser Forster who’s had a little spell with Southampton. We’ve got to go with the next generation and give them the experiences.”

    ENGLAND’S PROVISIONAL 33-MAN EURO 2020 SQUAD
Here’s a reminder of England’s provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2020. Gareth Southgate will narrow that down to 26 on Tuesday.

    CITIZEN KANE
Gareth Southgate insists Manchester United transfer target Harry Kane will not be leaving Tottenham until after the Euros.
He said: “I don’t feel I need to talk to Harry Kane regarding focus or professionalism.
“He has one goal with us and that’s to win the European Championship. He knows how important that is at this moment in time. What’s happening at his club is a matter for him and Tottenham.
“He’s made some statements in the last few days, but that is out of the way now. It’s very unlikely that transfer deals will be done while we are away.
“It’s different when we meet up in September and I’m very realistic that you can’t stop phones ringing, but most deals will be done at the end of the tournament or in the first week before it starts.
“I would expect most deals in terms of our players to be done after the tournament.”

    DRIVES YOU MADD
Brendan Rodgers claims James Maddison’s injury-plagued season cost him his place in England’s Euro’s squad.
The Leicester boss said: “James has been unfortunate the way the season has panned out.
“He didn’t start the season and it was difficult for him but then he got a run of games and was exceptional.
“He was creating and scoring goals. It was looking very good for him. Then, he’s picked up the injury and he hasn’t got back to the level of fitness he needs.”
“When you are a very gifted technical player – as he is – you have to be able to move to be able to get on the ball.
“Then, when you have the ball, you need the fitness to produce at such a high technical level. That’s something, unfortunately, that’s just not quite been there.”

    INJURY TIME
Gareth Southgate admits he is in the dark whether Harry Maguire will be fit for the Euros – because Manchester United have kept his medical details secret from England.
He said: “At this moment in time, Harry might play tomorrow or he might be out for two months I just don’t know.
“We had an initial assessment, which was positive in terms of the tournament, but there was always a little bit more swelling and further investigation needed.
“Of course when you’ve got a European final and information for the opposition is so tight and things do leak I understand why clubs want to keep their cards close to their chest.
“It’s made it a little bit more difficult for us but I don’t have a problem with Manchester United at all, I totally understand it.”

    SUPER SNUBS
Euro 2020 will be a festival of football this summer with some of the world’s best players on show.
But there will be some huge names including Sergio Ramos, Erling Haaland and Virgil van Dijk missing from the tournament.

    TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF

Gareth Bale has headed to Madrid but the rest of the Wales squad are in Portugal for some tune-ups.

A BIT OF ALP FROM LADY LUCK
Austria’s poor showing at the last European Championship might have been sobering – but a favourable draw means they again have high hopes of making a mark when Euro 2020 finally kicks off.
Austria have been paired with the seeded Netherlands in Group C but will expect to finish above North Macedonia and Ukraine to reach the knockout stage.
Boss Franco Foda said: “The Netherlands are the favourites. The Ukraine remained unbeaten in qualifying and topped their group ahead of Portugal and Serbia.
“At the tournament, everything is possible and details will be decisive. We will do everything we can to qualify for the round of 16.”
First priority for Austria, however, is to win a game. Their previous two appearances at the finals, as co-hosts in 2008 and in France in 2016, produced two drab draws and four defeats.
They had high hopes last time after an unbeaten run in the qualifiers with nine wins out of 10 and an eight-point gap over the chasing pack in their group. But in the finals they flopped.
    MORNING, EUROS FANS
Gareth Southgate announced his provisional 33-man England squad yesterday, with four uncapped players getting the nod.
Ben Godfrey, Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone all made the cut, although there were some difficult omissions for Southgate to make.
Hopefuls Patrick Bamford, Danny Ings, James Maddison and Eric Dier all missed out, with the Three Lions boss admitting that it was ‘difficult’ not to pick the latter.
He said: “He is a man who I have tremendous respect for and he has been, as you’ve rightly identified, a key player in some of our biggest nights, some of our biggest moments.
“Unfortunately I just don’t think his season has been strong enough to be in the squad.”
There was room for some exciting young talent, however, with Mason Greenwood, Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden among a number of players that could be heading to their first tournament.
Southgate, 50, is expected to announce his 26-man squad for the finals next week.
Meanwhile, Germany announced boss Joachim Low’s successor.
His former assistant Hansi Flick will take the reins after the tournament, having turned down Spurs following his Bayern exit.
Low, 61, will go into his final competition joined by two of his formerly trusted lieutenants in Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels.. despite having previously vowed to never pick them again.

London’s first game is June 13 at Wembley Stadium between England and Croatia
Euro 2020 was originally scheduled for June 12 – July 12 last year but was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Each city has assured UEFA that 25% of their capacity will be filled with spectators for the tournament this summer.
Who are the eleven host cities for Euro 2020?

    Amsterdam Arena – Amsterdam
    Olympic Stadium – Baku
    Arena Nationala – Bucharest
    Puskas Arena – Budapest
    Parken Stadium – Copenhagen
    Hampden Park – Glasgow
    Wembley Stadium- London
    Allianz Arena – Munich
    Stadio Olimpico – Rome
    La Cartuja – Seville
    Krestovksy Stadium – St. Petersburg

The Olympic Stadium in Rome hosts the tournament opener on June 11
Thirteen cities were initially selected as venues for the tournament but that number is now down to eleven.
The first host city to be removed was Brussels in 2017 due to delays with construction of the Eurostadion.
Then in April of this year it was announced that Dublin would no longer be a host city due to the Irish government being unable to guarantee 25% of the Aviva Stadium could be filled.
The 51,7000 seater Aviva Stadium will no longer host any Euro 2020 fixtures
The Royal Spanish Football Federation have also changed their host city from Bilbao to Seville due to the local Basque government being unable to guarantee fans would be able to attend games.
Estadio de La Cartuja will now host Spain’s Euro 2020 fixtures

    When is Euro 2020?

Opening game – 11 June, Stadio Olimpico Rome – Turkey vs Italy
Final – 11 July, Wembley Stadium London

Twenty-four teams will contest the tournament across six groups in venues all over Europe.
The top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout rounds, as well as four best placed third-teams.
Holders Portugal will try to retain their title after winning the 2016 tournament in dramatic fashion thanks to an extra-time winner from striker Eder.
    Where are the knockout rounds?

Last-sixteen – Amsterdam, London (2), Budapest, Seville, Copenhagen, Budapest, Glasgow
Quarter-finals – St. Petersburg, Munich, Baku, Rome
    Semi-finals – London (2)
    Final – London

Best XI of superstars who will NOT be playing at Euro 2020 including Sergio Ramos, Erling Haaland and Virgil Van Dijk

EURO 2020 will be a festival of football this summer with some of the world’s best players on show. But there will be some huge names including Sergio Ramos, Erling Haaland and Virgil van Dijk missing from the tournament.
The best XI stars to miss out on Euro 2020
Gareth Southgate named his provisional 33-man England squad on Tuesday.
But he left some huge names out including Patrick Bamford and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
SunSport put together an XI of the best England stars – with 126 combined caps – to be left out the squad.
And we have done the same for superstars from other European countries who will miss the flagship tournament.
Check out who will not be playing here…
    JAN OBLAK
Atletico Madrid’s world class keeper Jan Oblak will watch on from home as his country Slovenia failed to qualify.
They haven’t reached a major tournament since the 2010 World Cup.
FREE BETS: GET OVER £2,000 IN SIGN UP OFFERS HERE

    AARON WAN-BISSAKA
Manchester United star Aaron Wan-Bissaka is one of the most defensively sound full-backs in the Premier League.
But his lack of impact going forward has seen him left out of England’s squad while his United team-mate Luke Shaw has been included after arguably the best season of his career.
    SERGIO RAMOS
For the first time in history there will be no Real Madrid players in the Spain squad.
Ramos is captain of both teams and has been left out of his country’s squad for the Euros.
He missed several games for Los Blancos through injury recently which is why he was left out. Manchester City star Aymeric Laporte has been called up in his place.
    VIRGIL VAN DIJK
The Liverpool star has been out injured for most of the season after Jordan Pickford crocked him in the Merseyside derby in October.
His knee ligament injury has not cleared up in time meaning Holland’s captain will miss out.
Having failed to qualify for Euro 2016 and the last World Cup, Van Dijk is yet to represent the Dutch at a major tournament.
Is this the best XI players not to make Gareth Southgate’s England squad?
    JEROME BOATENG
The Bayern Munich ace was exiled from the international setup along with fellow stars Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels in 2019 as Joachim Low sought to bring through the next generation of stars.
Low is leaving after the Euros and has recalled Muller and Hummels for his last major tournament.
But he did not extend that courtesy to Boateng – who broke down in tears during his last game for Bayern – despite the centre-back playing 39 games in all competitions for the Bavarian giants this season.
    FERLAND MENDY
Another Real Madrid star who is unlikely to feature at the Euros.
He was struck down with tibial periostitis (severe shin splints) earlier this month and has not been included in France’s squad as a result.
    MIRALEM PJANIC
Since moving to Barcelona from Juventus last summer, the Bosnian has struggled for form.
But none of that matters as his country were beaten by Northern Ireland in the qualifiers.

    SERGEJ MILINKOVIC-SAVIC
Serbia were beaten by Scotland in a dramatic penalty shoot out in the play-offs.
As a result, the much fancied Lazio star will not be able to showcase his talents to potential suitors this summer.
He has 22 caps and is being linked with a move to Manchester United and Chelsea after Lazio failed to qualify for the Champions League.
    ISCO
One of several victims of the ‘No Real Madrid players for Spain’ situation.
The playmaker has 38 Spain caps but has only managed 29 games for Los Blancos this season with his relationship with Zinedine Zidane somewhat strained.
    ERLING HAALAND
The Norwegian is one of the most exciting young stars in the world.
He became the first player since Brazilian Ronaldo to score 40 goals in a season in Europe’s top five leagues before the age of 21 last week.
But Norway were knocked out in the play-off semi-finals by Serbia so will not be taking part.
    ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC
Having made a remarkable comeback to the international stage aged 39, the AC Milan star will miss out on Sweden’s Euros campaign with a knee injury.
The icon has scored 62 goals in 118 Sweden games and was welcomed back into the fold earlier this season after a five-year break but will miss what would surely have been his last opportunity at a major tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo will be popular with fantasy football managers once Euro 2020 gets underway
How do you play Dream Team Euros?
The premise will be familiar to many: pick the best possible XI from the players participating in Euro 2020 without exceeding a set budget – £50million to be exact.
Once we’re underway, you’ll have 20 transfers to use throughout the tournament to react to the unfolding drama.
Has Timo Werner suddenly remembered how to shoot? Get him in! Did North Macedonia really just beat Netherlands 7-0? Quick, swap Virgil van Dijk for some bloke you’ve never heard of in your life!
Your players will score points based on their performances with goalkeepers and defenders mainly benefiting from clean sheets while the best midfielders and forwards will be the ones banging in the goals.
There’s also points for assists, hat-tricks, match ratings of 7+ – supplied by WhoScored – and the player with the highest match rating once the dust has settled will also be named Star Man – an accolade that earns them an additional five points.

World Cup holders France are among the favourites to triumph at Euro 2020
    When does it start?
You can sign-up for Dream Team Euros right now – it should be available via the Dream Team app (you may have to refresh your app) but users can also access the game through Dream Team’s site.
You’ll be able to pick a prototype XI before team entry opens on May 21st – all player prices are subject to change until then.If your prototype team is revealed to be over budget you’ll have to shuffle the pack until it’s valid but don’t worry, you can make as many changes as you want before the tournament gets underway.
Scoring starts once the first game kicks off, which is Turkey v Italy at 8pm on June 11th, and finishes after the final on July 11th.
You can still enter a team after the first match has kicked off but you won’t get any points for the games that have already taken place or started – it’s best to settle on starting XI before the first kick-off.
Harry Kane already has one Golden Boot at a major international tournament – could he fire England to glory this summer?
    Which players should you pick?
Goals are worth their weight in gold so you’ll want to include some Golden Boot favourites – Robert Lewandowksi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku and Kylian Mbappe all catch the eye but these big names will drain your budget so think carefully.
It’s a similar story in midfield, N’Golo Kante may be world-class at what he does but he doesn’t score many goals – the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Kevin De Bruyne are more likely to etch their names on the scoresheet.
At the back, you want a keeper and defenders capable of registering consistent clean sheets.
Belgium conceded just three goals in their qualifying campaign so perhaps Thibaut Courtois is a prime candidate? Sergio Ramos will be popular in defence but bear in mind, any player that gets sent off will be docked points…

What are the groups at Euro 2021?
Your strategy will likely depend on the fixtures. Players facing tough opponents are less likely to score points than those with a relatively easy ride – at least in theory.
With that in mind, here’s a reminder of the groups…
GROUP A: Italy, Turkey, Wales, Switzerland
GROUP B: Belgium, Denmark, Russia, Finland
GROUP C: Netherlands, Austria, Ukraine, North Macedonia
GROUP D: England, Croatia, Scotland, Czech Republic
GROUP E: Spain, Sweden, Poland, Slovakia
GROUP F: France, Portugal, Germany, Hungary
Good luck in that one, Hungary!
Belgium have serious firepower in the form of Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne
How much does it cost to enter? Can you win money?
Dream Team Euros is completely free to play so there’s no reason not to get involved.
Not only that, the overall winner at the end of the tournament will win £50,000!
That’s right, your football knowledge could earn you a life-changing amount of money.

There is still a hope he can give players some time off to pop home during the tournament.
However, the Three Lions boss admits he is unsure if he will even get the clearance to allow that to take place.
Southgate said: “We’re not going to be able to let people in.
“There’s a clear edict from Uefa on what the bubbles need to look like to be as secure as we can make them.
“It’s never going to be 100 per cent failsafe but we’ve got to comply with as much as we can.
“We’re hoping that we might at some point be able to let the players have a little bit of time at home.
“But that’s constantly being assessed. It’d be a preference for us if we can.
“But of course, we’ve got to monitor not only our own situations, but where we are as a country, what are the variants, what the government guidelines are.

“That’s we hope to do that and we’re working towards that, but it is going to be limited access which we have to accept is going to be harder for some players to cope with than for others.
“You know everybody’s going to react to that and respond to that differently.”
Southgate named his provisional 33-man squad yesterday with Ben White and Ben Godfrey called up – but Eric Dier dropped.

Harry Maguire’s fitness for Euro 2020 a mystery to England, admits Southgate as Man Utd are keeping details secret

GARETH SOUTHGATE admits he is in the dark whether Harry Maguire will be fit for the Euros – because Manchester United have kept his medical details secret from England.Maguire was named in the provisional 33-man squad for this summer despite being sidelined with ankle ligament damage and the Three Lions boss is desperate to have his centre-back available.

But because United have not divulged any fitness info to protect their Europa League final planning, it has left Southgate uncertain just how fit the 28-year-old will be by the time the Euros kick off next month.

Maguire was joined in the squad by Jordan Henderson who has not played since February after a groin operation and the two senior stars are causing the biggest headaches for Southgate.
He added: “It’s a concern because we just don’t know the level they are at.
“With Jordan we know he’s on a good path. He’s got a load of good work into his legs.
“He chose to go that route in terms of his rehabilitation rather than pushing to be on the bench.

“We were in communication through that. He’s maybe ahead physically one or two others who have had injuries but have got back on the field, so look fit, but have got they intensity, can they raise the level?
“We’ve got to manage those players very carefully through this first period. We need to push but we don’t want to break them and we’ve got to get that balance right.
“They’re all important players without doubt but the two are more of a concern because of the unknown really.”
