Gareth Southgate to DITCH iconic waistcoat for Euro 2020 after England boss stole show with outfit at Russia World Cup

GARETH SOUTHGATE will continue to ditch the iconic waistcoast for this summer’s Euros. The England boss stole the show at the World Cup in Russia three years ago with his stylish outfit.
Gareth Southgate confirmed he will not wear a waistcoat for England matches at Euro 2020Credit: PA:Press Association
But there will be no return of the waistcoat at the upcoming tournament, especially with most England matches played in London.
Southgate told BBC Radio 4 Today: “It was a lovely moment to have that connection with the public.
    “I haven’t worn a waistcoat on its own since… I don’t think I’ll be wearing a waistcoat this summer.”
Southgate set a major trend in England during the nation’s run to the semi-finals in 2018.
Fans across the country bought into the ‘Southgate effect’ – quite literally as the Three Lions’ suit providers Marks & Spencer reported a 35 per cent rise in waistcoat sales.
And the day of the semi-final against Croatia became known as ‘Waistcoat Wednesday’ with waves of fans wearing the attire.
However, in England’s first game after the World Cup – a 2-1 home defeat to Spain in the September – Southgate opted for a blazer instead, ending the trend, much to supporters’ disappointment.
Southgate named his provisional 33-man squad for the rearranged Euro 2020 on Tuesday.

Ben Godfrey and Ben White were included, as was Trent Alexander-Arnold, but there was no space for the likes of James Maddison and Eric Dier.
Seven of those players will be cut from the final 26 next week as Southgate makes his final preparations for the tournament.
England face Austria and Romania in friendlies in the first week of June before opening their campaign against 2018’s nemeses Croatia at Wembley on June 13.

    MORE FROM TIERNEY
The £25million Scotland star will board a plane on Thursday with the rest of a 26-man squad bound for a Spanish training camp to prepare for friendlies against Holland and Luxembourg.
Then, it will be the huge Group D fixtures against the Czech Republic, England and Croatia.
Tierney, 24 on Saturday week, added: “The injury happened at a time I was feeling great. I’d just got back from the Scotland camp where I’d done well.
“I had to wait three or four days before I got the news from the Arsenal physio Jordan Reece it was a grade two ligament problem and I’d be six weeks out.
“He told me: ‘You’ll be fine for the Euros. You don’t need to worry about that’.
“It was still disappointing to be out — but it was also relief it wasn’t for far longer.
“Thankfully, surgery wasn’t needed. I actually got back playing within four and a half weeks which was crazy and now I’m feeling great again and ready for the Euros.”

    HARRY UP
Garteh Southgate has lifted the lid on why injured Harry Maguire was included in his 33-man England provisional squad for Euro 2020.
Maguire’s ankle problem saw him miss Manchester United’s Europa League final against Villarreal, though he was surprisingly named on the bench.
Southgate said: “We had an initial assessment on Maguire, which was positive in terms of the tournament, but there was always a little bit more swelling and further investigation needed.
“When you’ve got a European final and information for the opposition is so tight, and things do leak, I understand why clubs want to keep their cards close to their chest.
‘It’s made it a bit more difficult for us but I don’t have a problem with United.
“We’ve got some injuries that are at various stages, (with) a couple that we have very little information about at the moment.”
    KNEE BOTHER
The FA are setting up plans to stop fans booing players taking a knee at Euro 2020, according to reports.
Since supporters have returned to stadiums this month, there have been a spate of incidents of some booing players taking the knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Ahead of Euro 2020, the FA is now thinking up ways to help prevent the protesting, according to The Telegraph.
One idea in the works is to release a film education fans as the the reason why England players will take a knee during the delayed tournament.
Euro 2020 will see the Three Lions play in front of fans for the first time since footballers began taking a knee before games.
And the number of matches where the gesture has been booed since a limited number of supporters were allowed into grounds – including the final day of the Premier League season – has worried the FA.
    MIDFIELD BATTLE
Gareth Southgate has declared that Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold could easily feature in midfield at Euro 2020.
He told BBC Radio 4: “I think there’s no doubt he could.
“The difficulty is he hasn’t had the opportunity to do that since he was a younger player and that’s where he came through in Liverpool’s academy.
“He’s a fantastic passer of the ball and has great passing vision. So he’s a playmaker from right-back.
“So why wouldn’t that lend itself at some point of his career to being in midfield?”

    COAT OF ARMS
England boss Gareth Southgate has revealed his iconic waistcoat will not be worn at Euro 2020.
Having sported the piece of clothing at the 2018 World Cup, Marks & Spencer’s saw an increase of 35 per cent in waistcoat sales.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4 today, Southgate said: “It was a lovely moment to have that connection with the public.
    “I haven’t worn a waistcoat on it’s own since.
“I don’t think I’ll be wearing a waistcoat this summer.”
    TIER JERKER
EXCLUSIVE: Kieran Tierney heard his knee ‘pop’ — and feared his Euros dream was over.
The Arsenal star crashed to the ground in agony after a collision with Liverpool midfielder James Milner in a 3-0 home defeat on April 3.
Feeling sharp pain from his left knee, Tierney became deeply concerned he could be destined for the operating theatre.
He said: “I heard the pop from my knee and it immediately went through my mind ‘Is this bad? Is this my season done?’
“I was worried about it being long term. Arsenal were on course for a European final and I didn’t want to miss the ties we had coming up or the end to the season.
“Then there was Scotland and the Euros. There was everything to play for.”
    MIDFIELD MAESTROS
Five fantastic European Championship performances from these midfielders in the last five tournaments.
But who gets your vote as being the best?
    Vote below.

    AWAY WITH IT
Uefa club supremos will discuss plans to axe the away goals rule today.
SunSport revealed last month that Europe’s Club Competitions Committee was ready to change the much-criticised rule.
But a proposal for away goals to count extra in the first 90 minutes of the second leg was parked.
It was felt that stopping the advantage of away goals in extra-time would be too confusing.
Instead, panel members will debate scrapping the rule, originally introduced in the 1965-66 season.
Uefa is understood to be ‘neutral’ over the proposal, which must be approved by the ruling executive committee.
If club chiefs agree, it could end for 2021-22 European competitions.
    WAN OF A KIND
Former Manchester United and England star Andrew Cole believes that Aaron Wan-Bissaka was unlucky not to make Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man Euro 2020 squad.
He told talkSPORT 2: “When anyone gets mentioned regarding the right-back position, they always say they’re not sure about players defensively, especially Alexander-Arnold.
“Wan-Bissaka is the opposite. Defensively, he’s brilliant.
“Going forward, he doesn’t attack as good as he rest of the boys.
“But defensively, he’s up there with the best of them.”
    AMPED UP
Ethan Ampadu is fully focused on Wales’ Euro 2020 journey amid speculation surrounding his Chelsea future.
He said: “It’s a big summer – but it’s a big summer for whoever gets the chance at the Euros.
“It’s not a distraction for me. I’ve not been thinking of what can happen next year, because you never know, if you can perform to a new level that might change things.
“For now it’s just concentrating on the now for Wales and doing as best as I can.
“There’s been discussions throughout the season about the season, but not necessarily going forward. Hopefully this summer can be a big summer so that’s what the concentration is on.”
    GOOD MORNING EUROS FANS
Gareth Bale’s agent has rubbished reports in Spain that the Welsh star was hoping to retire after Euro 2020.
Spanish outlet ABC have claimed today that the Welshman is preparing to quit football at the end of Euro 2020.
It stated the ex-Southampton ace wanted to hang up his boots and attempt to forge a career as a pro golfer.
However, his agent Jonathan Barnett shot those rumours out of the water when asked about them by talkSPORT.
He said: “Sorry, I don’t speak about rubbish reporting.”
Meanwhile, Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Gareth Southgate’s decision not to include Patrick Bamford in his provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2020.
He told talkSPORT: “Bamford is very unlucky not to make it, but the sort of striker he is, Greenwood is better, Kane is better, and he’s similar to them.
“He’s not similar to Calvert-Lewin or Watkins, they can run the channels, they’re pests, they’ve got hold-up play. They’re different strikers.
“Bamford was in competition with Kane and Greenwood, and he’s not going to get in ahead of them.”
And finally, Ondrej Kudela has LOST his appeal after racially abusing Rangers star Glen Kamara – putting him out of this summer’s Euro 2020.
Slavia Prague’s Kudela was hit with a 10-match ban by European football’s governing body after he was found guilty of the comments towards the Gers midfielder at Ibrox in March in a Europa League tie.
That appeared to rule the veteran out of his side’s matches at the tournament this summer.
And that has proven to be the case after Uefa’s appeals committee heard evidence from several of his team-mates on video conference call this morning.
The Czech Republic controversially left open a Euros place for the disgraced defender in the hope he won his appeal.
But now, Uefa have dismissed that case after today’s hearing, meaning he WON’T feature at all against England in the Euros.
    SWISS ARMY
Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic has warned against unrealistic expectations at the Euros.
He told Swiss newspaper Neue Zurcher Zeitung: “When it comes to us, everyone is talking about the European Championship quarter-finals.
“That is arrogant, there is a lack of respect for our opponents in the first round, and for the possible opponent in the round of 16.
“First we have to play, then we can talk. Spain, France, Germany or other bigger nations may be able to look at things differently, but not us.”
    ZLAT’S THAT
AC Milan star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has avoided a ban from Uefa for having a financial interest in a betting company.
The Swedish striker has been fined €50,000 – around £43,000 – but will be able to play for the Serie A side in next season’s Champions League.
Despite evading suspension, Ibrahimovic will NOT represent Sweden at Euro 2020 after picking up an injury late in the season.

    PAT-TRICK
Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Gareth Southgate’s decision not to include Patrick Bamford in his provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2020.

    RACE RAP
Ondrej Kudela has LOST his appeal after racially abusing Rangers star Glen Kamara – putting him out of this summer’s Euro 2020.
Slavia Prague’s Kudela was hit with a 10-match ban by European football’s governing body after he was found guilty of the comments towards the Gers midfielder at Ibrox in March in a Europa League tie.

    WAGS WARNED
England’s Wags and families will be banned from seeing the England players in the team hotel for the duration of the Euros.
Gareth Southgate said: “We’re not going to be able to let people in.
“There’s a clear edict from Uefa on what the bubbles need to look like to be as secure as we can make them.
“It’s never going to be 100 per cent failsafe but we’ve got to comply with as much as we can.
“We’re hoping that we might at some point be able to let the players have a little bit of time at home.
“But that’s constantly being assessed. It’d be a preference for us if we can.
“But of course, we’ve got to monitor not only our own situations, but where we are as a country, what are the variants, what the government guidelines are.
“That’s we hope to do that and we’re working towards that, but it is going to be limited access which we have to accept is going to be harder for some players to cope with than for others.
“You know everybody’s going to react to that and respond to that differently.”
    BERG OUT
Tottenham star Steven Bergwijn is the major casualty of the Netherlands’ Euro 2021 squad but there is room for Brighton defender Joel Veltman.

    IT’S COMING HOME
Here’s a reminder of England’s provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2020. Gareth Southgate will narrow that down to 26 on Tuesday.

    DRIVEN MAAD
Brendan Rodgers claims James Maddison’s injury-plagued season cost him his place in England’s Euro’s squad.
He said: “James has been unfortunate the way the season has panned out.
“He didn’t start the season and it was difficult for him but then he got a run of games and was exceptional.
“He was creating and scoring goals. It was looking very good for him. Then, he’s picked up the injury and he hasn’t got back to the level of fitness he needs.”

    KAN DO ATTITUDE
France’s Euro 2020 hopes have received a massive boost after N’Golo Kante returned to Chelsea training today.
The midfielder took part in training on day one of the build-up to Saturday’s Champions League final clash with Manchester City.
Inspirational midfielder Kante has been struggling with a hamstring problem to the extent he missed Sunday’s Premier League finale at Aston Villa.
SunSports understands the Frenchman and compatriot Edouard Mendy both took part in full training with the rest of the group and then did a session on their own.

FA setting up plans to stop fans booing England stars taking knee at Euro 2020 after incidents since supporters return

THE FA are setting up plans to stop fans booing players taking a knee at Euro 2020, according to reports.Following the return of supporters to stadium this month, there have been a spate of incidents of some booing players taking the knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
The FA will set up a plan to prevent fans from booing England stars taking a knee at Euro 2020Credit: AFP
Ahead of Euro 2020, the FA is thinking up ways to help prevent these protests, according to The Telegraph.
One idea in the works is to release a film educating fans as to the reason why England players will take a knee during the delayed tournament.
Euro 2020 will see the Three Lions play in front of fans for the first time since footballers began the symbolic gesture.
And the number of matches where those taking the knee have been booed – including the final day of the Premier League season – has worried the FA.
Aston Villa’s final-day win over Chelsea saw a small number of fans boo players taking the knee, leaving England star Tyrone Mings fuming.
In an angry post on Twitter, Mings wrote: “To anyone that booed us taking the knee, have a look at yourself and ask if you truly support equality and equal opportunity for the black players on the pitch.
    “It’s tiring. Educate yourself.”
Some have reservations over footballers taking a knee due to the politics of Black Lives Matter, rather than anything involving race.

As reported by The Telegraph, the decision of the Three Lions to observe the gesture before their games this summer divided opinion on the England Supporters Travel Club’s official Facebook page.
One member wrote: “I’m all for a stand against racism.
“But I won’t support anybody or anything that shares its symbolism with a Marxist communist ideology.
“If you want to take a stand against racism then maybe stand arm in arm.”
But another disagreed, adding: “What is it about a quiet, short, respectful gesture designed to keep the anti-racism message alive and well that so triggers some people?
“For the life of me I can’t understand. Unless they don’t like the message of course.”

Ethan Ampadu out to impress Thomas Tuchel at Euro 2020 for Wales and prove he can become first-team Chelsea star

ETHAN AMPADU is out to impress Thomas Tuchel at Euro 2020.The Chelsea and Wales midfielder, 20, is due to return to Stamford Bridge next term following a season-long loan at Sheffield United.

During Ampadu’s stint at the relegated Premier League outfit, the Blues brought in Tuchel as their new boss to replace Frank Lampard.
Ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League final showdown with Manchester City in Porto this weekend, Ampadu says he has not spoken to Tuchel yet with his Bramall Lane progress monitored by loan player technical coach Carlo Cudicini.
Ampadu said: “Hopefully this can be a big summer for me. I’ve been speaking to Carlo this year but I haven’t spoken to Tuchel because they are concentrating on the Champions League final and I wish them all the best for that.
“My future is not a distraction. I haven’t been thinking about what could happen next year. If you perform to a good level that might change things. I just have to concentrate on Wales for now. I will have discussions with Chelsea after the summer.”
Ampadu, currently in Portugal on Wales’ five-day pre-Euro training camp, will watch Chelsea’s European final with his Welsh team-mates following their return to Cardiff on Saturday.

Gareth Bale joined the squad in the Algarve on Wednesday after spending a couple of days with his family in Madrid and Ampadu hopes the Dragons captain does not retire after this summer’s finals following further speculation on his future in Spain.
Ampadu said: “He’s had a fantastic career and everyone in the Welsh squad hopes not. Nothing has been said.”
Asked if Real Madrid’s Bale, who had a season on loan at Tottenham, will continue for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Ampadu replied: “I hope that can happen. Going on form, he scored a couple of goals in the last game of the season and I hope he can bring them here. He’s a world-class player.”
Ampadu has been on the sidelines since April 17 with a pelvic issue but he is fighting fit to be named in Robert Page’s 26-man squad on Sunday for the finals where Wales face Switzerland, Turkey and Italy in Group A.
He added: “Towards the end of the season I had a little pelvic problem but I’m preparing to be an option if selected.
“Every footballer has niggles. It’s not too serious and it is progressing well. I’m feeling good and ready to go.”
Ampadu was a teenager doing his GCSE’s when Chris Coleman’s Wales reached the semi-finals at Euro 2016.
He said: “It was unreal and a proud moment for me to train with the senior squad before they went to the last Euros.

“My exams went well and my parents were pleased, which is the main thing.  But I have great memories of that tournament. They did so well last time. It pushes everyone on to want to do the same again. It whets your appetite. If you get the taste of something you just want a bit more.
“It was disappointing to get relegated with Sheffield United. It was a difficult season but I got so much experience. I have learnt the demands of playing week in, week out in the Premier League and how ruthless it is.
“Any mistake or half an inch given and they score. I was fortunate to play so much and I will try to learn from the hard times and use it as a positive.”

Players who perform above expectations are the real heroes of fantasy football.Individuals widely tipped to flourish at Euro 2020 come with an appropriately high Dream Team Euros price: Harry Kane (£7.0m), Kevin De Bruyne (£6.0m), Kylian Mbappe (£7.5m), etc.
Gaffers aiming to top their mini-leagues and put themselves in contention for the £50,000 jackpot will be able to recognise the hidden gems.
Imagine if you had known Patrick Bamford would score 17 league goals before the Season game got underway.
Or that Joao Cancelo would go from a peripheral figure at Man City to a central protagonist.
Here we hope to unearth some players with similar potential to score points beyond their price tag in Dream Team Euros with five midfielders priced at £3.0m or cheaper…

    Hakan Calhanoglu (£3.0m)
According to our ratings providers WhoScored, the Turkish playmaker was among the top ten players in Serie A this season.
The 27-year-old ended the league campaign with nine assists to show for his creativity and was a key contributor to Milan securing Champions League qualification for the first time in eight years.
A set-piece specialist, Calhanoglu was in great form for Turkey in the recent World Cup qualifiers, scoring twice and providing three assists in 213 minutes of action.
Italy are favourites to top Group A but Turkey will fancy their chances of progressing to the round of 16 with Wales and Switzerland for company.

    Davy Klaassen (£2.5m)
Everton fans are unlikely to be convinced by this suggestion as the Dutchman made little impact after his £24m transfer to Goodison Park.
Now back at Ajax, Klaassen has rediscovered the form that initially titillated the Toffees of his talent in 2017.
Only Dusan Tadic scored more goals for the Amsterdam club in 2020/21 and the 28-year-old impressed during his most recent outings for his country.
Gini Wijnaldum has an excellent scoring record for Netherlands but Klaassen could be a smart option for those looking to spend under £3.0m on a Dutch midfielder capable of goals and assists.

    Ruslan Malinovskiy (£1.0m)
The Ukrainian midfielder is the standout bargain of Dream Team Euros.
Despite starting just 22 games for Atalanta in Serie A this season, the 28-year-old finished as the league’s top assist-provider, creating 12 goals and scoring eight himself.
Ukraine finished top of their qualifying group ahead of Portugal and have been drawn in Group C alongside Netherlands, Austria and North Macedonia.
Malinkovskiy will take most of Ukraine’s set-pieces and could prove to be an absolute steal at £1.0m.

Somebody has to give the ball to Lewandowski…Credit: Reuters
    Piotr Zielinski (£2.5m)
If you’re wondering who is going to be assisting Robert Lewandowski’s goals at Euro 2020 – Zielinkski is the most likely candidate.
Only the aforementioned Malinovskiy and Romelu Lukaku provided more assists in Serie A this season.
Poland’s stylish technician also chipped in with ten goals for Napoli in all competitions – the best season return of his career.
However, Zielinski has been relatively goal shy on the international stage having not scored for Poland since 2018.

    Tomas Soucek (£2.5m)
How could we not include one of the biggest surprise packages of the Premier League campaign?
The Czech midfielder formed an effective partnership with Declan Rice during West Ham’s impressive campaign and his goalscoring exploits were instrumental in securing the Hammers Europa League qualification.
A potent aerial threat, Soucek is the most-popular Dream Team Euros midfielder under £3.0m at the time of writing.
The 26-year-old scored a hat-trick for his country in a World Cup qualifier as recently as March and is a guaranteed starter at Euro 2020.
Czech Republic face a tough task in Group D alongside England, Croatia and Scotland but Soucek has a knack of defying expectations.

Arsenal star Kieran Tierney admits he feared knee ‘pop’ would end his Euro 2020 dream with Scotland

KIERAN TIERNEY heard his knee ‘pop’  — and feared his Euros dream was over. The Arsenal and Scotland star crashed to the ground in agony after a collision with Liverpool midfielder James Milner in a 3-0 Premier League home defeat on April 3.

Mercifully, £25million Scotland key man Tierney will board a plane on Thursday with the rest of a 26-man squad bound for a Spanish training camp to prepare for friendlies against Holland and Luxembourg.

Arsenal missed out on the Europa League final, losing in the semis to Villarreal.
But Tierney is now rested for a big summer. He added: “I feel strong and I’m massively excited about the Euros.
“It will be brilliant to be reunited with the squad again and we’ll be giving it everything we’ve got over the next month.”

Man Utd sealing Jadon Sancho transfer ‘no brainer’ this summer but might affect Harry Kane signing, fears Gary Pallister

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Gary Pallister thinks his former club should sign Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho this summer. The ex-England defender also believes Tottenham forward Harry Kane needs to sort his future before Euro 2020 begins – and claims Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is United’s best manager since Alex Ferguson.

Speaking to SBK sportsbook about Sancho, Pallister said: “That right-hand side has been a problem for United all season.
“Sancho is exciting and has had a great time in Germany scoring goals and getting assists.
“He looked as though he was going to come in last season but Dortmund played hardball and it didn’t get over the line. I think he’s eager to come… a real no-brainer.
“He’s the type of player that would excite the United fans next season. These kinds of players are going to cost a pretty penny and that’s the worrying thing.
“After the pandemic and the way clubs have been hit I don’t know whether you can afford to bring in two massive signings like Harry Kane and Sancho.”
Sancho, who is reportedly interested in joining United this summer, has been in terrific form this season, scoring 16 goals in all competitions for Dortmund.

Pallister was also keen to discuss Kane’s transfer saga, telling SBK sportsbook: “Kane will have an idea of where he wants to go.
“He will want it sorted out as soon as possible because it can linger and it can affect a player’s concentration so hopefully for England’s sake, for Harry’s sake and for Tottenham’s sake, it does get sorted.
“If Daniel Levy doesn’t want him to go or he plays hardball this has to be dealt with before the Euros kick-off.
“Harry Kane has given great service to Tottenham and at this moment in time it doesn’t look like they’re going to compete for major honours.
“Kane deserves [a move] because he’s been very fair with Tottenham over the years and now is the time to cut him loose and let him fulfil his dreams.”
Kane has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season, winning both the Golden Boot and Playmaker award for most assists.

And Pallister, who won 15 trophies during his nine years at Old Trafford, thinks his former team-mate Solskjaer is the right man to lead the club forward.
He added: “He [Solskjaer] needs to put a trophy in the cabinet and I’m sure he feels that way.
“Ole and this Manchester United team is the best side United have had for quite a while. They try to play in the image of Manchester United and Ole gets that, the fans are happy with the way it is going.
“I think this is the closest the club has been to the top since Sir Alex left and I think that’s because Ole has been the first manager to understand the club.
“United is different from most clubs around the world in that they expect entertainment and unfortunately they never really got it from previous managers.”
