Belgium boss Martinez fumes at ‘reckless’ Rudiger after Chelsea star’s challenge that leaves De Bruyne’s Euros in doubt

BELGIUM boss Roberto Martinez was left raging at ‘reckless’ Antonio Rudiger after his challenge in the Champions League final which has left Kevin de Bruyne a doubt for Euro 2020.The German defender blocked off the Manchester City playmaker’s run during the second half of Chelsea’s European triumph in Porto on Saturday night.

Rudiger caught De Bruyne in the face with his shoulder and, after a trip to the hospital, the Belgian has been left with fractures in both his nose and orbital socket.
Tweeting on Sunday, De Bruyne said: “Hi guys just got back from the hospital. My diagnosis is Acute nose bone fracture and left orbital fracture.
“I feel okay now. Still disappointed about yesterday obviously but we will be back.”

And Martinez, who is now less than two weeks out from Belgium’s first group game against Russia, believes Rudiger should have been punished harsher than the yellow card he received.
“For me, Rudiger is very, very fortunate,” he said. “When you look at the replay, there’s no clash of heads.
“He’s properly leaving the shoulder against Kevin. He seems concussed and we will see the state of that.
“But that leaves a sour taste, because Rudiger’s holding his head, it’s almost that he wants to show that he’s hiding something.

“For me, it was excessive force and it was reckless. And it should have been a red card.
“Kevin is not a player that goes down for no reason. You can see the pain and it’s a swollen eye.”
De Bruyne, 29, has 80 caps for his country and is one of Martinez’s key players heading into Euro 2020.
Belgium take on Russia in their opening game on June 12, before then facing Denmark and Finland.

Has Timo Werner suddenly remembered how to shoot? Get him in! Did North Macedonia really just beat Netherlands 7-0? Quick, swap Matthijs de Ligt for some bloke you’ve never heard of in your life!
Your players will score points based on their performances with goalkeepers and defenders mainly benefiting from clean sheets while the best midfielders and forwards will be the ones banging in the goals.
There’s also points for assists, hat-tricks, match ratings of 7+ – supplied by WhoScored – and the player with the highest match rating once the dust has settled will also be named Star Man – an accolade that earns them an additional five points.

World Cup holders France are among the favourites to triumph at Euro 2020
    When does it start?
You can sign-up for Dream Team Euros right now – it should be available via the Dream Team app (you may have to refresh your app) but users can also access the game through Dream Team’s site.
You’ll be able to pick a prototype XI before team entry opens on May 21st – all player prices are subject to change until then.If your prototype team is revealed to be over budget you’ll have to shuffle the pack until it’s valid but don’t worry, you can make as many changes as you want before the tournament gets underway.
Scoring starts once the first game kicks off, which is Turkey v Italy at 8pm on June 11th, and finishes after the final on July 11th.
You can still enter a team after the first match has kicked off but you won’t get any points for the games that have already taken place or started – it’s best to settle on starting XI before the first kick-off.
Harry Kane already has one Golden Boot at a major international tournament – could he fire England to glory this summer?
    Which players should you pick?
Goals are worth their weight in gold so you’ll want to include some Golden Boot favourites – Robert Lewandowksi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku and Kylian Mbappe all catch the eye but these big names will drain your budget so think carefully.
It’s a similar story in midfield, N’Golo Kante may be world-class at what he does but he doesn’t score many goals – the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Kevin De Bruyne are more likely to etch their names on the scoresheet.
At the back, you want a keeper and defenders capable of registering consistent clean sheets.
Belgium conceded just three goals in their qualifying campaign so perhaps Thibaut Courtois is a prime candidate?

What are the groups at Euro 2021?
Your strategy will likely depend on the fixtures. Players facing tough opponents are less likely to score points than those with a relatively easy ride – at least in theory.
With that in mind, here’s a reminder of the groups…
GROUP A: Italy, Turkey, Wales, Switzerland
GROUP B: Belgium, Denmark, Russia, Finland
GROUP C: Netherlands, Austria, Ukraine, North Macedonia
GROUP D: England, Croatia, Scotland, Czech Republic
GROUP E: Spain, Sweden, Poland, Slovakia
GROUP F: France, Portugal, Germany, Hungary
Good luck in that one, Hungary!
Belgium have serious firepower in the form of Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne
How much does it cost to enter? Can you win money?
Dream Team Euros is completely free to play so there’s no reason not to get involved.
Not only that, the overall winner at the end of the tournament will win £50,000!
That’s right, your football knowledge could earn you a life-changing amount of money.

Wales name Euro 2020 squad with teen Rubin Colwill a shock inclusion alongside Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey

RUBIN COLWILL is the shock name in Wales’ Euro 2020 squad – after just SIX first-team games for Cardiff. But Dragons boss Rob Page, who has replaced Ryan Giggs for the finals, has included rookie Colwill, 19, alongside captain Gareth Bale and star names Aaron Ramsey and Dan James.

Real Madrid attacker Gareth Bale, on loan at Spurs, faces an uncertain club future but is still a mainstay for WalesCredit: PA
Pacy Man Utd ace Dan James is also in the Dragons’ squad for the summer finals
Uncapped midfielder Colwill’s inclusion will evoke memories of Theo Walcott, who was a bolter for England’s 2006 World Cup squad under Sven Goran Eriksson.
Colwill only made his first league start for Mick McCarthy’s Cardiff on April 24 in a 2-1 Championship win over Wycombe.
He started the season playing for Cardiff Under-23s in a 5-1 defeat to Welsh rivals Swansea last September.
In total, Colwill has played 191 minutes of senior football since his Bluebirds debut against Coventry in February.
He got the nod over the likes of Schalke winger Rabbi Matondo and Tom Lawrence of Derby, who has suffered Euro heartbreak for a second time after an ankle injury ruled him out in 2016.
Matondo, like Hal Robson-Kanu, who was overlooked for last week’s five-day Portugal training camp, was sent home by Page in March for breaking Covid-19 rules.
Swansea centre-back Ben Cabango was picked ahead of Tom Lockyer of Luton, who has been recovering from an ankle injury.

Reece James’ Champions League final masterclass for Chelsea adds to Southgate’s England right-back headache for Euros

FOR Gareth Southgate, there could be such a thing as having too much choice at right-back.Just as the England boss looked like whittling it down to a straight shootout between Premier League winner Kyle Walker and La Liga champion Kieran Trippier, Reece James performs out of his skin on the biggest club stage of all.

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold will hope he is still in contention for Euro 2020 but his situation is unclear after a difficult seasonCredit: Getty
Where this leaves Liverpool ace Trent Alexander-Arnold is anybody’s guess.
But James was immense in Chelsea’s Porto fairytale — along with England pals Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount.
He could arrive at the England camp this week with Raheem Sterling still in his pocket. James made seven tackles in the game — FOUR more than any other player — and also produced the most clearances with five.
He epitomised the body-on-the-line approach of Thomas Tuchel’s side, whose plan to be “a stone in City’s shoe” worked a treat.
Southgate seems to have doubts over Alexander-Arnold’s defensive capabilities and you can see why he may turn to James.
Like so many of his team-mates, 21-year-old  James’ game has  progressed under Tuchel, who initially benched him in favour of Callum Hudson-Odoi when he first took over.

Asked of Tuchel’s qualities, James summed up how the German  turned the Blues from a season of collapse to champions of Europe.
The right-back said: “He’s  honest. He believes in us and that we can win many titles together.”
Southgate’s dilemma is slightly less painful on the left, with Chelsea’s  Chilwell battling Luke Shaw.
Shaw has had his best season yet in a Manchester United shirt but Chilwell has been scintillating in the last few months.
He was excellent in  Saturday’s 1-0 Champions League final win over City, keeping former Leicester colleague Riyad Mahrez at bay — and not far behind James in the statistics.
Surely Chilwell’s  Estadio Do Dragao display will have firmed up his spot v Croatia in England’s Euros Group D opener on June 13.

After Chelsea’s heroic defending landed  their second Champions League title, Chilwell said: “We knew their strengths going forward. We defended for our lives.
“We’re all tired but when the Champions League’s up for grabs, it doesn’t really matter.”
One man who looks certain to be in Southgate’s line-up is Mount.
The Blues playmaker, 22, teed up Kai Havertz’s 42nd-minute winner with a perfect pass from deep.
Mount consoled England pal Phil Foden, 21, at the final whistle as the City star lay on the turf.
Mount said: “I said they deserve to be here because of what they have done this season.”
Mount also paid tribute to his family, adding: “I dreamt of this as a kid.

England could  be reaping rewards this summer if Southgate goes with Chelsea’s terrific trio.

Wayne Rooney ‘would have tried everything’ to lure Jamie Vardy into playing for England at Euro 2020 to star with Kane

WAYNE ROONEY ‘would have tried absolutely everything’ to persuade Jamie Vardy to play at Euro 2020  – as he rates him an ideal strike-partner for England skipper Harry Kane.Vardy, 34, retired from international football in 2018 but is still in hot form for Leicester.

And Three Lions’ record scorer Rooney believes the pacy poacher could solve tactical problems for England chief Gareth Southgate.
Derby boss Rooney, 35, wrote in his Sunday Times column: “One man I wish was in Gareth’s squad is Jamie Vardy.
“I would have tried absolutely everything to lure him out of retirement for these finals.
“I know some people may be surprised at this, especially with the legal case between my wife and Jamie’s wife, but this is my honest football opinion.
“He may be 34, but Jamie is still a brilliant player, who was involved in 24 goals in the Premier League this season and would have been a great asset – not only as an impact sub but as a potential starter.
“Look at how Kane has been playing for Tottenham Hotspur, dropping deeper and playing through balls – Jamie could have been running on to them.”
Vardy supplied 15 goals and nine assists this season as Leicester won the FA Cup and finished fifth in the Premier League.
He quit playing for England after struggling for starts following his debut aged 28 in 2015.

But he still finished up with seven goals in his 26 internationals.
Rooney also reckons it’s crucial for the Three Lions’ hopes this summer that Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire and Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson recover from injuries.
He said: “England have a good chance and will be very hard for any team to beat if they reach the last four, with the semi-finals and final at Wembley.
“But to succeed I think Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson have to be fit.

‘Those two plus Harry Kane are the spine of England’s team. Gareth needs them on the pitch.
“Those players being there allows Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford to go and express themselves, and every side has those leaders, those rocks, whom the rest depend on in a crisis.
“If the going gets tough in a game, Jordan and the two Harrys are the ones all the other players will look to.”

And this time he has a new way to show off his fantastic achievement of winning both the Golden Boot and Playmaker award for the 2020/21 Premier League season.
The 27-year-old scored 23 goals for Spurs in what was a poor season for the club overall.
He also pipped Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes to the most Premier League assists, setting up 14 goals.
Tottenham finished seventh place behind city rivals West Ham and Chelsea, qualifying for the latest European competition – the Europa Conference League.
England boss Gareth Southgate does not want his captain and star man distracted for the upcoming Euros.
And Southgate believes that if Kane was to move away from Tottenham, it would happen after this summer’s tournament.
He said: “I don’t ever need to have a conversation with Harry Kane regarding focus or professionalism.
“He has one goal this summer while he’s with us and that’s to win a European Championship.

“I know how important that is for him at this moment in time. What’s going on at his club is a matter for him and Tottenham.
“He’s obviously made some statements in the last few days, so in many respects that’s out of the way now. I am talking across the board here, I think it’s very unlikely transfer deals will be done while we’re away.
“I think that’s different when we have our camps in September, and we’re on that deadline and every now and then we’ve had to help facilitate a medical or a meeting between a player and manager.
“I’m very realistic about those things.
“We’re not going to stop phones ringing. We can’t control conversations that are going on in private, but I wouldn’t expect it – I think most deals are done at the end of tournaments or they are done in the first week after the end of the season.
“I would expect, across the board, for anything with our players to be after the tournament.”
