Scotland rocked ahead of Euro 2020 as John Fleck self-isolates after positive Covid test and won’t face Netherlands

JOHN FLECK has tested positive for Covid-19 at Scotland’s Spanish training camp. The Sheffield United midfielder WON’T therefore be flying to Portugal for tomorrow night’s friendly against the Netherlands.

The SFA say the rest of the squad has been re-tested and returned negative results.
A statement read: “The Scottish FA can confirm that John Fleck has tested positive for COVID-19 at the Scotland National Team basecamp at La Finca.
“As a result he will self isolate as per Spanish Government guidelines and therefore not fly to Portugal for tomorrow’ match against the Netherlands.
“The rest of the squad was retested for COVI-19 and returned negative results today.”
John Fleck was one of Scotland’s 26 man squad for Euro 2020
Steve Clarke said Fleck was asymptomatic and reckons he had the virus before he arrived at the camp – rather than catching it whilst in Spain.
“He’s fine, no symptoms. Obviously he has to isolate for a few days now. So we will keep an eye on him, we will look after him as we do everybody. And hopefully it stops there.
“I am looking at the information we have got and relying on the doc and the medical opinion.
“He is 99% sure John brought it with him, into the camp. it is just one of those things. We know the state of the world at the moment with the pandemic and we just need to deal with it.
Che Adams wears a mask as he prepares for tomorrow night’s game
“As other countries might have to deal with it as well.
“In terms of John he will be in isolation until he returns a couple of negative tests.
“I am not quite sure what the guidelines are in Spain in terms of how many days he would have to isolate but we will be testing every day with John and waiting for him to return a few negative tests.
“For everyone else, it is just carry on the good work.

But ahead of the big kick-off a week on Friday, they must first negotiate this warm-up friendly against Franco Foda’s side in Middlesbrough.
Why are England playing at the Riverside Stadium?
After announcing his final squad on Tuesday evening, Southgate will run his side through its paces against the Austrians on Wednesday.
The game will be held at Championship side Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium, where kick-off is at 8pm.
The Three Lions are based in the North East for the next week and will face Romania at the same venue on Sunday.

Boro’s ground last staged an international in 2003, when England beat Slovakia 2-1.
The stadium has been selected due to it’s Covid-secure status and continues the trend of England heading out on the road for home internationals.
They’ve played at Manchester, Sunderland, Leeds, Leicester and Southampton since 2016 and the FA have leapt on this opportunity to branch away from London again.
There will be over 8,200 fans in attendance, with the game a sell-out – although that accounts for only 25 percent of the Riverside’s total capacity.
How can I watch on TV and live stream?

Who is referee Carlos del Cerro Grande and what games is he taking charge of at Euro 2020?

SPAIN’S man in the middle at the Euro 2020 this summer Carlos del Cerro Grande. The Euros is his first major international tournament as a ref.

But Grande is no stranger to big competitions, Grande was the fourth official for the 2021 Champions League final and has officiated some high-profile games in the past.
The Spaniard took charge of Manchester United’s 6-2 thrashing of Roma in this seasons Europa League semi-final and Manchester City’s 2-1 Champions League victory at Borussia Dortmund in April.
Who is Carlos del Cerro Grande?
Grande began refereeing in Spain’s third tier in 2006 and as his stock rose at lower level, he was promoted to the Spanish second division six years later.
A Police agent by profession, Grande continued to impress and made his La Liga bow in 2011 where he is now one of Spain’s top referees.
The 45-year-old oversaw his first Champions League qualifying game in 2013 and two years later, the Copa del Rey final between Barcelona and Sevilla where he sent off both Javier Mascherano and Ever Banega.
The Madrid native is unable to officiate El Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona but has been given the task of overseeing international and even had a short stint in Saudi Arabia’s professional league.
In 2016, Grande was the recipient of the prestigious Vicente Acebedo Trophy, an annual award by the Spanish Football Federation to the best referees in Spain.
He is no stranger to Wembley Stadium as he took charge of England’s 3-0 friendly win over Republic of Ireland in November 2020.
    What is his refereeing style?
Grande is known for a common-sense style of refereeing when making decisions, opting to allow games to flow.

His experience and know-how of when to intervene has elevated him to the top of the Spanish game.
What games is he taking charges of at Euro 2020?
This has not yet been confirmed but he is expected to officiate in both the group stages and the latter rounds of the tournament. More

How Daniel Sturridge became England’s forgotten man with free agent having last played a club match 15 MONTHS ago

DANIEL STURRIDGE still had the world at his feet back in 2016 — despite being part of England’s shameful Euros exit. The striker, who had scored in the Europa League final for Liverpool a few weeks earlier, was expected to push on at Anfield under Jurgen Klopp.
Daniel Sturridge was enjoying his best football at the time of the last Euros in 2016Credit: Getty
But today — as England name their squad for this summer’s tournament — Sturridge is a free agent who last played a match 15 MONTHS ago.
The former Chelsea forward, now 31, claims he is training every day with his team of fitness coaches and is determined to make a comeback.
Maybe there will be a club who will benefit from a player with great natural talent even though, at times, he has not always been prepared to put his body on the line.
Sturridge is not the only one of Roy Hodgson’s squad in France who, after a humiliating 2-1 loss to Iceland in the last 16, saw their careers go backwards.
In Sturridge’s case, his last game came on February 22, 2020, for Trabzonspor in a 2-2 draw with Besiktas in Turkey.
But the foolish decision to advise his brother to bet on him potentially moving to Sevilla cost him.
Sturridge was banned for four months for breaching betting rules and saw his Trabzonspor contract ripped up.
Since then, he has spent a fair amount of time in Los Angeles, where his dog was stolen before being returned after an appeal to the public.

But his current, clubless plight is a far cry from 2016.
He went into the Euros on the back of scoring in Liverpool’s 3-1 Europa League final loss to Sevilla — his 13th goal of the season.
And he scored a 91st-minute winner as England beat Wales 2-1 for their first victory although disaster struck with that embarrassing defeat against Iceland in Nice.
Sturridge’s 26th and final England game was a 1-0 win over Lithuania in October 2017, a match which saw debuts for Harry Maguire and Harry Winks.
During that time under Gareth Southgate, the changes within the squad have been remarkable.
Southgate will name his 26-man squad for the Euros today and there will be only six survivors from France — John Stones, Kyle Walker, Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford.
It is easy to forget that the captain for Hodgson at Euro 2016 was Wayne Rooney.
Rooney is still saddened by the decision of Jamie Vardy to quit international football after the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The Derby boss said: “He may be 34 but Jamie is still a brilliant player, who was involved in 24 goals in the Premier League this season.
“He would have been a great asset — not only as an impact substitute but also as a potential starter.”
Sturridge, for sure, could learn a thing or two from Vardy about attitude and commitment.

And there are some incredibly tough decisions to make for the man who got England to the World Cup semi-finals three years ago.
But there has been a change of plan – Southgate will only name a PROVISIONAL squad for the Euros on Tuesday, May 25.
When will Gareth Southgate name his FINAL England squad for the Euros?
Southgate will name his England squad on Tuesday, June 1.
The deadline for all Euro 2020 squads to be named is that same day.
The announcement is set to take place at 1pm.
Why has Southgate delayed his final announcement?
Because there are so many England players involved in the Europa League final on May 26 and Champions League final on May 29.
Here are all the England regulars involved in both matches:
    CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL
Chelsea: Ben Chilwell, Reece James, Mason Mount.
Manchester City: Kyle Walker, John Stones, Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling.
    EUROPA LEAGUE FINAL
Manchester United: Dean Henderson, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood.

How many players can international managers name in their Euro 2020 squad lists?
Each squad can have 26 players in it.
How England’s path to Euros glory could look

Uefa initially announced that there could be 23 stars in each, but because of the threat of players having to isolate due to Covid, the European governing body expanded each squad by three.
Many think that can be an advantage for England, with some serious strength in depth in certain areas, such as right-back and attacking midfield.
But other countries like France, Spain and Germany will surely feel the same way.
Who is in the 33-man England squad?

    Dean Henderson (GK)
    Sam Johnstone (GK)
    Jordan Pickford (GK)
    Aaron Ramsdale (GK)
    Trent Alexander-Arnold
    Ben Chilwell

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta tells Kieran Tierney to prove he is one of Europe’s top defenders in pre-Euro 2020 pep talk

MIKEL ARTETA rates Kieran Tierney one of the top defenders in the English Premier League. Now the Arsenal boss has urged former Celticidol KT to prove over the next month he’s one of the best in EUROPE.
Mikel Arteta told Kieran Tierney to go and prove himself at the Euros after starring for ArsenalCredit: PA
Scotland defender Tierney told SunSport the Spaniard — a title winner with Rangers in 2003 — requested a meeting with him at the end of the season.
Massive fan Arteta sought to inspire his left-back ahead of the Euros by telling him to unleash the full range of his ability on the Czech Republic, England and Croatia.
Tierney was signed by Unai Emery for £25 million in 2019, but the manager was sacked three months later.
Arteta was appointed Emery’s replacement within three weeks, and ever since the 23-year-old’s game has risen to new heights.
Kieran Tierney has become one of Scotland’s most valuable playersCredit: AFP
A grateful KT, loved by Gunners fans who view him as a future skipper, opened up on Arteta’s pre-Euro finals pep talk — and the extent of his influence on him.
Tierney said: “I had a meeting with the Arsenal manager and he just told me, ‘Go and express yourself with Scotland, enjoy yourself, bring energy to the team, bring energy to the camp’.
“He’s always so supportive of me, and tremendously positive.
“The manager always brings the best out of me.
“With regards Scotland for the Euros he also said, ‘Give everything you have, that’s how you get the best out of yourself, and it will help the team the most’.”

Kieran Tierney has come on leaps and bounds after swapping Celtic for ArsenalCredit: PA:Press Association
Arteta recently eulogised about Tierney, who was a shining light in a rocky campaign for Arsenal. He said: “The right words to describe Kieran would be determination, passion and energy — that’s what is he about.
“He is determined in every action and puts it all into every game, and we enjoy the energy levels he provides to the team.”
Tierney admits it’s a feeling of mutual respect with his gaffer, and added: “I listen to everything the manager tells me, word for word.
“I love working with him, he’s helped me massively.
“If you can see the differences in my game in the last 18 months or so it’s because of Mikel Arteta and what his coaching staff have been telling me to do.
“I’ve been working on their advice every day. I’m really grateful for what the gaffer’s done for me.”
Tierney flew out last week with the rest of Steve Clarke’s squad to the luxury La Finca training camp on the Costa Blanca.
They have been preparing for two friendlies — against Holland on Wednesday, and Luxembourg on Sunday.

But this is also where head coach Clarke is laying the foundations for the Scots’ bid to make history at the Euros — by being the first-ever Scotland side to get out of the group stage at a major tournament.
Tierney is keen to ensure the backroom staff get the plaudits for the work they do away from the limelight . . . especially the CHEF.
He said: “I think there’s great optimism in the country for our chances at the Euros and it gives the players a lot of confidence.
“I think it’s a great squad and we’ve got to believe in ourselves.
“But I know every single player feels extremely grateful for the superb support we get from the backroom staff.“The manager is due massive credit for our qualification, but the coaches and everyone else involved have been brilliant too.
    “Graeme Jones organises absolutely everything.

“But the chef, Johnny McCallum, is one of the most important people in the Scotland set-up.
“I’d actually say he is more important than all the players!
“If I missed a Scotland camp I don’t think anyone would bat an eyelid — but if the chef missed one everyone would be gutted.
“The players know the importance of Graeme and Johnny, but all of our backroom staff are fantastic and we’re lucky to have them.
“No one should underestimate their part in our qualification for a first tournament in over 20 years.
“The atmosphere within the squad is brilliant right now.
“We have a laugh when the time is right, and when there is a need to be serious then we are completely focused.
“Off the pitch you spend a lot of time in the hotel not doing much, so it’s all the more important the spirit is strong.
