Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all missed their efforts as England lost 3-2 after five penalties apiece.
And now Shaw – who scored the opening goal of the match in the opening two minutes – has revealed what Southgate told his heroes before they collected their runners-up medals.
After Saka’s decisive penalty was saved by Player of the Tournament Gianluigi Donnarumma, Southgate gathered the England players in a huddle.
And Shaw, 26 today, revealed Southgate told the squad to ‘keep their heads up’ and look to the future, with the 2022 World Cup just 18 months away.
Shaw said: “He just said to keep our heads up.
“He also said what a fantastic group everyone is a part of and of course things are going in the right direction.
“The squad in general, the togetherness, is definitely there.
“You could seen that even after the game and that huddle and the way we were with the lads who missed.”

On Monday morning, Southgate confirmed he wanted to stay on as England boss until at least the end of the 2022 World Cup.
However, the boss – who took full responsibility for the choice of penalty takers – insisted he would not ‘outstay his welcome’.
Southgate revealed: “I don’t want to commit to something longer than I should.
“I never want to outstay my welcome.”

When asked about the World Cup immediately after Sunday’s defeat, Southgate said: “That feels a million miles away.
“For certain this team can be better and can improve.
“You have seen the young players we have blooded in this tournament and been absolutely fantastic.
“The players have been incredible to work with and tonight is going to be extremely difficult of course and you have to feel that disappointment because the opportunities to win trophies like this are so rare in your life.
“But when they reflect what they have done they should be incredibly proud of themselves.”

Ex-Italy star Altobelli taunts England for having ‘one rusty cup’ in trophy cabinet and ‘thinking they are the greatest’

ITALY LEGEND Alessandro Altobelli has slammed England for thinking that their one ‘rusty’ trophy in 55 years makes them the greatest. The ex-striker launched his unprovoked rant after his country narrowly beat the brave Three Lions 3-2 on penalties in the Euro 2020 final, after a tight 1-1 draw in normal time at Wembley.

He lambasted the nation for clinging onto the heroic 1966 World Cup triumph which he claims is paltry compared to the Italians four trophies in the same competition.
The 65-year-old, who only won one World Cup trophy himself with Italy in 1982, revealed it was a joy to watch his countrymen humble Gareth Southgate’s troops on their home turf.
Football Italia reported he told RAI Sport: “It’s joyful winning at Wembley against England.
“Who always think they are the best, the greatest, the most talented, the most beautiful.
“And yet if you look in their trophy cabinet there’s one rusty cup from 1966! Go look at our trophy cabinet, it’s packed!”
The Juventus veteran’s attack follows a barrage of tasteless jibes from the Azzuri towards the Three Lions after their first-ever Euro trophy win.
Gianluigi Donnarumma, who clinched the Italian’s victory when he saved Marcus Rashford’s and Bukayo Saka’s spot-kick’s in the tense shoot-out began the trolling.
The 22-year-old couldn’t resist belting out England’s anthem ‘It’s Coming Home’ shortly after the game.
His childish antics were followed up by Chelsea star Jorgino and Leonardo Bonucci who remixed the national treasure by singing ‘It’s coming to Rome.’ while Giorgio Chiellini wore a crown to their parade.
Bonucci continued the onslaught of taunts by posting a picture of himself on social media with the trophy with the caption: “Cup, croissant and cappuccino, Italians do it better.”

Meanwhile, the Three Lions were dealing with the heartache of coming within touching distance of the European Cup.
They were in no mood to be rewarded for finishing runners-up and some players quickly removed their medals upon receiving them.
It was clear to see a runners-up medal was not the reward England wanted for their valiant efforts over the last four weeks.

Shaw says England stars will be there for ‘devastated’ Saka, Rashford and Sancho after Italy penalty shootout misses

LUKE SHAW says he and his England team-mates will be there for ‘devastated’ Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho. And when the pain has eased, the Manchester United defender, 26, is looking forward to the Three Lions’ young squad embarking on a ‘new adventure’ towards next year’s World Cup.
Luke Shaw has revealed the England squad will support Saka, Rashford and Sancho after their missed penalties in the Euro 2020 final shootoutCredit: Getty
Shaw, who has become close to Arsenal teenager Saka during the five weeks in camp, said: “He’s devastated.
“But I think the most important thing is for us now as a team to be there for him and give him a big hug and tell him to keep his head up.
“It happens. It is a penalty shoot-out – anything can happen, as a lot of people know.
“It is an experience he will learn from but we will all be behind him, he knows that.
“It is not just him, though. There’s Rashy and Sanch also. We’re with them all. With this team there are no individuals who cost us.”
For Shaw, it was the second time in a matter of weeks that he had suffered the agony of defeat in a final on penalties.
United lost a dramatic, long shootout against Villarreal in the Europa League and Shaw said: “It is devastating. Gutting.
“It is of course not what we wanted. I think we felt very confident about the final.

“We felt like we were going in the right direction with our performances. We are devastated. We gave everything and just came up short.
“But it was a step in the right direction in terms of what we wanted to achieve – a [European] final, that’s the first time in history that has happened.
“But it is not just me, it’s the team. That is not enough. We wanted to win but as I say we came up short.

“We are all really gutted tonight and it hurts a lot.”
Manager Gareth Southgate gathered the England players in a huddle before they were presented with their runners-up medals and tried to help them look forward with confidence.
Shaw said: “He just said to keep our heads up. He also said what a fantastic group everyone is a part of and of course things are going in the right direction.
“The squad in general, the togetherness, is definitely there. You could see that even after the game and that huddle and the way we were with the lads who missed.”
Shaw and the England players will not have long to lick their wounds, with the new Premier League season due to begin on August 11.
And on September 2 they will be in Hungary for a qualifier for the World Cup in Qatar that will start in November 2022 – barely 16 months away.

Shaw said: “First and foremost I obviously hope we made the nation proud – that is always important to us.
“Like I said, it wasn’t what we wanted and I’m sure it wasn’t what they wanted.
“But I hope this tournament brought smiles and joy to people even if it ended on a low.
“I think overall, the experience we have all had as a team with the fans being here will be memories we won’t forget.
“But we know as a team we can always keep improving.
“The good thing about the team is there are a lot of good young players in the squad that are only going to mature and grow up and gain experience from matches like tonight.
“It is going to hurt for a while but I think we are back in camp towards the end of the next month and a new adventure in the World Cup and we want to qualify for that.
“We know there are things to improve on as a team but I am sure we will get there.”

Five England stars who could complete club transfers after Euro 2020 exit including Kane and Grealish to Man City

FIVE England stars could have decisions to make over their futures following their Euro 2020 final heartbreak at Wembley.Gareth Southgate’s squad are set to take a well-deserved summer break following their exploits in the penalty defeat to Italy last night.

During the tournament, Three Lions captain Harry Kane had insisted that he would deal with his club future after he finishes national duty.
But the Tottenham striker is just one of many England players that may be on the move following their standout displays over the past month.
Jadon Sancho has already agreed a £73million deal in principle to move to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund.
Yet which of his international teammates could end up sealing transfers of their own? SunSport takes a look…

    Harry Kane
The England captain insisted he was ignoring rumours about his club future during the tournament – and so it proved with his four goals.
But there will be no denying that Manchester City will now be ramping up their efforts to sign Kane following the end of Euro 2020.
SunSport revealed last month that Pep Guardiola’s side have offered Spurs £100million for the 27-year-old as they look to replace Sergio Aguero.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is determined to keep Kane, who has three years left on a £230,000-a-week deal.
If the Premier League Golden Boot winner is allowed to go, rumours suggest the North Londoners are not interested in a swap deal.
Manchester City are interested in deals for both Kane and Jack GrealishCredit: Rex
    Jack Grealish
Kane is not the only England hero that Champions League finalists City are keen on making a move for this summer.
SunSport revealed last month that Grealish’s camp believe he can leave Aston Villa — paving the way for a £100m move to the Etihad.
The Villains have remained insistent they do not want to sell the 25-year-old, who has four years left to run on his current deal.
Yet with Grealish wanting to step up to Champions League football, Villa understand they cannot stand in his way.
And City are expected to make their move in July so the playmaker can begin pre-season training with them.

    Kieran Trippier
The England defender has been linked with a return to a more permanent return to these shores despite a stunning season in Spain.
Trippier lifted the LaLiga title with Atletico Madrid but soon emerged as a key target for Manchester United.
His manager Diego Simeone is a huge fan of the Euro 2020 runner-up and does not want to see the 30-year-old leave.
But a £30m offer for Trippier could persuade them to sell with Arsenal even been linked with a surprise move for the ex-Spurs man.
West Ham are hoping to hold onto Declan Rice following interest from Chelsea
    Declan Rice
England’s midfield enforcer put clubs on alert after SunSport revealed he rejected two new contracts with West Ham.
The Hammers are desperate to tie the 22-year-old down to a new long-term contract amid interest serious from Manchester United and Chelsea.
And in a huge boost to the Blues – the club that released Rice as a teen – the 21-year-old has reportedly told friends he doesn’t want to leave London.
The England international is best friends with Mason Mount while his dad and agent Sean is a Chelsea supporter.
But any hopes of a return to Stamford Bridge appear to have taken a dent with West Ham said to have put a £70million price tag on Rice.
    Raheem Sterling
The City winger found himself the subject of transfer speculation amid Guardiola’s plans for a big summer rebuild.
Arsenal and Real Madrid have both been linked with the England star in recent months – with Sterling even mentioned as a potential makeweight in a deal for Kane.

As revealed by SunSport, the Gunners are willing to stump up for his mammoth wages as they have done for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Real Madrid meanwhile, continue to monitor Sterling’s situation – with the 26-year-old entering the final two years of his £300,000-a-week deal.
Yet it remains to been seen whether City decides to shelve any plans to sell the Boy from Brent following his Euro 2020 heroics for England.

PRINCE William has slammed vile racists who posted messages of abuse to three young black Lions after last night’s heartbreaking defeat. The royal – who was at yesterday’s game with wife Kate and son George – said he’s “sickened” at the disgusting trolls who targeted Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho after their penalty misses.

And Gareth Southgate has told journalists the attacks are “unforgiveable” – and it’s “just not what we stand for”.
The Duke of Cambridge, who serves as president of The FA, tweeted: “I am sickened by the racist abuse aimed at England players after last night’s match.
“It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this abhorrent behaviour.
“It must stop now and all those involved should be held accountable. W.”
    It comes as:

The prince was seen punching the air last night – before the evening ended with tears for England after a mighty fight against Italy.
After the loss, racist morons began attacking three of the team’s black players with monkey emojis and vile abuse.
Boris Johnson is among those to condemn the sick jibes.
“This England team deserve to be lauded as heroes, not racially abused on social media,” he said.
“Those responsible for this appalling abuse should be ashamed of themselves.”
The Met Police has vowed to launch a probe.
The force said: “We are aware of a number of offensive and racist social media comments being directed towards footballers following the Euro 2020 final.
“This abuse is totally unacceptable, it will not be tolerated and it will be investigated.”
And Home Secretary Priti Patel tweeted: “I’m disgusted that England players who have given so much for our country this summer have been subject to vile racist abuse on social media.
“It has no place in our country and I back the police to hold those responsible accountable.”
Twitter said today it has removed more than 1,000 posts within the past 24 hours which violated its policy, as well as permanently suspending a number of accounts.
William, Kate and George were seen looking sombre last night after England’s loss.
It is totally unacceptable… all those involved should be held accountablePrince William
It was a late night for the seven-year-old, who was comforted by his dad after the loss.
The stadium erupted within the first two minutes of the game after Luke Shaw netted the ball, bringing the team one step closer to bringing the trophy home after a 55-year drought.
And little George looked on top of the world as he celebrated the goal, beaming at William and hugging his mum in celebration.
But Italian Leonardo Bonucci managed to nab an equaliser in the 67th minute, before clinching a win on penalties.
Despite the initial excitement, George, dressed smartly in a suit and tie, was left devastated – and Kate too was pictured with her head in her hands.

And after the game, William described England’s Euro 2020 defeat as “heartbreaking”.
He told the team: “You’ve all come so far, but sadly this time it wasn’t our day.
“You can all hold your heads high, and be so proud of yourselves — I know there’s more to come.”
