Belgium stars REFUSE Covid vaccine over fears jab’s side effects will wreck Euro 2020 chances

A number of Belgium players have reportedly rejected the chance to receive a Covid-19 vaccination before Euro 2020.Belgian outlet HLN claim some of Roberto Martinez’s players turned down the chance to take the Pfizer jab over fears it will wreck their chances.
A number of Belgium’s players are said to have refused the Covid-19 vaccine before the EurosCredit: Getty
The country’s government had given the green light for the Red Devils – the number one international team in football – to receive their vaccination.
Yet some players are worried about the potential side effects – tiredness, headaches, muscle and joint pain, chills and fever – that affects more than one in ten people.
Belgium, which reported 1,498 Covid cases on June 1, are set to begin their Euro campaign against Russia on June 12.
Premier League stars – past and present – including Toby Alderweireld, Timothy Castagne, Thibaut Courtois and Thomas Vermaelen are all said to have received their jabs.

But professor Dirk Ramaekers, who heads Belgium’s Task Force COVID-19 Vaccination Strategy, allayed fears about the refusals to be vaccinated.
He said: “A number of Red Devils had already been vaccinated abroad, a number of them have recently experienced Covid.
“The latter have antibodies and prefer to be vaccinated after the tournament.
“Of those who were not vaccinated, the vast majority had themselves vaccinated upon arrival in our country.”
Ramaekers said Belgium’s squad and coach Martinez were ‘very pro-vaccination’ and that only ‘one or two’ opted out of receiving their jabs.

He added: “I look at it positively and notice that the players – with guys like Mertens, Lukaku and Hazard in the lead – just like the association and the coach are very pro-vaccination.
“Within the group, the majority is protected. The group protection is great because those boys will live in a highly isolated environment for the coming weeks.
“On the field, all participating teams will protect their players as much as possible with vaccination and testing.”

Dream Team winner shares his Euro 2020 squad and tips after scooping ‘life-changing’ £75,000 jackpot

ANDREW FERGUSON celebrated pocketing a ‘life-changing’ £75,000 windfall from Dream Team by treating his family to beers and a curry before enjoying a three-day party. The 40-year-old from South Wales took first prize after brilliantly beating around 650,000 players in The Sun’s Dream Team fantasy football competition.

Andrew Ferguson pocketed £75,000 after winning The Sun’s Dream Team competition
His team, appropriately named Fergi Time, finished 13 points above second place following a nail-biting Champions League final and a nervous wait for the table to update.
Ferguson told SunSport: “Winning the whole thing and a life-changing amount of money – that definitely hasn’t sunk in.
“I was with my family out on the street and I went down on my hands and knees on the floor because it was such an emotional moment to share with my young boys and my wife.
“The money will change our lives in terms of us having the house we always wanted.
“We’ve always wanted loads of work on the house but never been able to afford it so now we can get that extension and kitchen we’ve always wanted.
“I’ve never had that kind of money before. I’ve always lived month-to-month and never had a massive disposable income so definitely changes mine and my family’s life.
“My son’s are all massive football fans so I said we’re going to do a trip around some stadiums in the UK – then maybe go off to Spain and do a tour of the Nou Camp and the Bernabeu and go to Italy.
“I definitely don’t want to spend all the money on sensible stuff.”

Ferguson, who works as Head of Content for Fantasy Football Hub, went top of the pile on week 21 after taking advantage of Manchester City’s blistering form in the New Year.
But with the cash prize in sight towards the end of the season, he rode his luck at times with a disallowed Harry Kane goal proving the difference between £50,000.
Ferguson added: “The nerves were awful.
“I was top for so long and the money is there in front of you – I was just determined not to make any mistakes.
“I did get myself into a mindset that was ‘what will be, will be’ and I didn’t want any regrets or to make any rash moves.
“Obviously the difference between first and second… £50,000. That’s a life changing amount so I had that feeling of my stomach churning and being really nervous.
“I spend hours a day planning, looking at fixtures weeks in advance.
“As soon as I saw Manchester United had that triple game week about a month back, one of the moves I made was bringing in Mason Greenwood for Kane.
“Kane had two goals disallowed against Leeds in that gameweek which was really fortunate for me because everyone around me had him. Greenwood scored a couple of goals and got the points.
“Research can get you so far and can get you into a position where you can have a good season but so much is down to luck.
“For example, if one of Kane’s goals have been allowed against Leeds I wouldn’t have come first. That’s how close it is – a VAR decision or missed penalty. It’s really fine margins.”
Ferguson is unsurprisingly locked and loaded for another assault on The Sun Dream Team for the Euros with £50,000 up for grabs.
With Kane, Romelu Lukaku and Cristiano Ronaldo spear-heading his attack, Fergi Time is bound to be pushing for a high finish yet again.
How England’s path to Euros glory could look

His secret, however, is to go heavy on Italian defenders.
Talking through his team, Andrew added: “I think Italy’s group and their defensive quality speaks for itself.
“The three I picked are nailed on to play and expected to keep a couple of clean sheets at least.
“Vertonghen and Meunier too for Belgium, they’ve got a good group and Meunier does show attacking intent and tends to play out wide.
“Into midfield, this is going to be Foden’s breakout tournament, I think he should start every game.
“Wijnaldum has a much better scoring record for the Netherlands than for Liverpool so he’s great value and Gnabry is just so exciting for Germany, he scores goals and assists and gets heavily involved.
“Lukaku is a bit of a snip at £6m – £1m less than Kane and Ronaldo and I expect him to finish top scorer.
“Kane’s right in form too. Especially with his penalty record and Ronaldo is Ronaldo. He’s a no-brainer and he has a brilliant Portugal team around him too. I fancy Portugal to have a great tournament and they are playing Hungary, the weakest team at the Euros.”

How England could line up against Austria with Jesse Lingard set to start friendly clash despite Euro 2020 snub

GARETH SOUTHGATE will pick from a limited squad for Wednesday night’s friendly with Austria.England come into the 8pm clash at the Riverside with much of the 26-man squad picked for the Euros unavailable.

Players from Chelsea and Manchester City are set for a night off after Saturday’s Champions League final.
And the four Manchester United stars should also be kept out of the starting line-up following their gruelling Europa League final last week.
Therefore the side somewhat picks itself with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Coady, Tyrone Mings and Kieran Trippier the remaining defenders.
Injury concerns Jordan Henderson and Jack Grealish may not be risked, leaving Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips and Jude Bellingham in midfield.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Harry Kane are competing for the central striker’s role with Bukayo Saka set to be joined by Jesse Lingard in attack.
The West Ham loanee was left out of the Euros squad but Southgate has confirmed his inclusion for Wednesday with Jadon Sancho missing out due to a throat infection.
And other players dropped when the 33-man provisional squad was trimmed down may end up featuring off the bench if required.
Speaking after Tuesday’s announcement, Southgate admitted it had been hard to tell James Ward-Prowse, Ollie Watkins and Lingard that they were missing the Euros.

The Three Lions boss told reporters: “I said in March that [Lingard] had a fabulous few weeks but he was slightly fortunate because we were without three or four wide players at that time.
“He was excellent for West Ham and he plays so well for us – we have total trust in the way he plays. He’s reliable, he’s a great member of the group.
“He will play tomorrow because we’ve got Sancho ill, we’ve obviously got a lot of players not available and he’ll start to help the balance of the team.”

The reigning champions are looking to win the Euros back-to-back with an arguably stronger squad than the side that beat France in the 2016 Euros final.
But up first, Portugal will travel to continental neighbours Spain and play a warm-up fixture at the home of Spanish champions Atletico Madrid.
Portugal will then face Israel on home soil before preparing to face Hungary in their opening Euro 2020 fixture.

Etihad centre-back Laporte, 27, made the claim he did not receive a reply from the French World Cup-winning boss when he sent him a message – but Deschamps refutes that.
Deschamps said: “What makes me uncomfortable is what he might say, and that is a lie.
“The only message I received from him was in October about a precise situation regarding an injury he had sustained in September.
“He has that freedom. He hasn’t played for us? It could have happened, ten seconds would have been enough.
“He has always been in the list of players called up, but there has been competition for places.”
Chelsea’s trio of France stars linked up with Deschamps’ Euro squad yesterday and received a hero’s welcome on their arrival in Nice.
Following last Saturday’s Champions League triumph against Manchester City in Porto, N’Golo Kante, Olivier Giroud and Kurt Zouma were hailed by their team-mates and Deschamps ahead of tonight’s friendly with Wales.

While Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, 33, could play for his country for the first time since 2015 following his alleged role in the sex-tape blackmail of former France team-mate Mathieu Valbuena.
Deschamps has reportedly forced Benzema and Giroud to sit next to each other in a bid to end their feud.
Benzema, 33, has been critical of his fellow striker Giroud during his absence from the national set-up
In March last year he was asked to compare himself to the Chelsea striker.
He replied: “This won’t take long. You don’t confuse F1 with go-karting. And I’m being kind. I know I’m F1.
“It works because he’s there. That’s all. It’s not going to be spectacular, it’s not going to be anything crazy but in his way you see more of Griezmann or Mbappe because he will put the work in.
“Does everyone like that way of playing? I don’t know.”
