England keeper Sam Johnstone will treat Euro 2020 just like a game at Barnsley, says his ex-West Brom boss Slaven Bilic

SAM JOHNSTONE is so chilled he would treat the Euros exactly like a night game at Barnsley. At least that is what Slaven Bilic believes following the keeper’s classy England debut in Sunday’s 1-0 friendly win over Romania.

Sam Johnstone enjoyed a hugely impressive debut for England – but former boss Slaven Bilic is not surprisedCredit: PA
Bilic was Johnstone’s manager when they clinched promotion to the Premier League with West Brom in 2020.
The Croat reckons Johnstone’s upbringing in the Manchester United academy and his naturally ice-cool temperament helps him spread reassurance through his defence.
Bilic said: “Sam is a terrific guy, he is so calm and such a hard worker.

“He never played for Manchester United but it doesn’t matter. You know when people are coming from the big clubs, they know how to behave.
“In our first season at West Brom it was promotion and in the second he was one of our key players in the Premier League.
“And although they got relegated, he has marked his name in the Premier League.”
He added “Sam is not a loud guy. He is very calm and doesn’t speak a lot.
“He is one of those guys that gives you confidence with his calmness.

“He is relaxed but not sleepy. He is totally in a zone and in the beginning I was telling him to be louder.
“But after that, I noticed he is one of those who can calm a team down with his attitude. He is not fazed. For him it would be the same if it were a Monday night in Barnsley or a match at Euro 2020.
“It comes from your character but also from when you are at a big club and always being scrutinised.”
Bilic’s old club West Ham are one of a number of Premier League teams linked with Johnstone, 28, who could be sold by Albion following their relegation.
His superb reaction save from Romania striker Andrei Ivan was one of the few highlights from England’s performance in their final Euros warm-up.
And it puts pressure on first choice Jordan Pickford.
Johnstone had dived to his left to stop Alex Cicaldau’s shot but the ball was blocked and fell perfectly for Ivan to volley home . . . only for the Three Lions keeper to spring straight back up and leap to the other side to brilliantly palm the ball away.
Bilic, now boss of Chinese Super League side Beijing Guoan, said: “Sam is a great shot-stopper, great with his feet, great technique and so quick that he can dive one side and then save impossible things the other way.
“It doesn’t surprise me, he is great on and off the pitch.

“He is a good trainer and I am big-time pleased for him.
“Before games you have people who shout and scream in the dressing room ‘Come on, let’s do this or that, blah, blah, blah’.
“He says just a couple of words because he’s in the zone. He knows what to do, you don’t have to tell him twice.”

Aaron Ramsey back in a ‘good place’ ahead of Euros as Bale and Wales stars fly out to Baku for tournament

AARON RAMSEY was absolutely flying when Wales qualified for the Euros in November 2019.The ex-Arsenal star had signed for Italian giants Juventus and scored twice in a 2-0 win over Hungary which sealed back-to-back final appearances for the Dragons.

But, in those 20 months since, Ramsey’s career for club and country has stalled.
The midfield playmaker, named in the Euro 2016 Team of the Tournament after Wales’ unexpected run to the semi-finals under Chris Coleman, has struggled to recapture that form and shake off the constant threat of injuries.
Since that golden summer in France, Rambo has played in just 19 of Wales’ 44 games as a lack of consistency in form and fitness has let him down.
And his start in Saturday’s goalless friendly bore draw with Albania was just a second start for his country since qualification was secured to tee up only a third finals appearance in Welsh history.
The statistics of Ramsey’s common absences has brought immense frustration and disappointment for a small nation, who have relied on the 30-year-old and Gareth Bale over the last decade.
In fact, a section of fans have even questioned his commitment to playing for his country.
Ramsey was on the plane that left Cardiff for Baku on Monday and his availability for Group A games with Switzerland on Saturday followed by Turkey and Italy is a hot topic.
His quality is undoubted but his fragility remains.
BETTING SPECIAL – GET ENGLAND TO WIN EURO 2020 AND HARRY KANE TO BE TOP SCORER AT 18/1

Now the burning question is can one of Wales’ best players survive the intensity of three games in eight days when the tournament kicks off?
Ramsey said: “It’s been a frustrating couple of years to try and get any consistency going. Different environments, different methods and things like that.
“It’s not something I’ve been used to because I was at one club for a very long time and I think adapting to that took a lot longer.
“I’ve had to change a few things but now I feel like I’m in a good place.
“I’ve definitely worked hard over the last few months to get my body back into a good place.
“I’m a proud Welshman who wants to play for Wales and help my team as much as I can.
“For me to have missed a few games over the last few years has been very frustrating and difficult for me.
“Hopefully now that’s behind me and I can look forward to all these games in the European Championships.”
Ramsey and the Welsh squad jetted off to Baku on Monday for the tournamentCredit: Instagram / @aaronramsey
Ramsey is typically optimistic but his fitness concerns will linger on heading into the finals.
Even against Albania, the Welsh nation winced as he collided with Ardian Ismajli at the start of the second half and the relief was palpable when boss Robert Page delivered the post-match medical update of, ‘It was just a kick on the shin.’
Ramsey has managed 92 minutes across two pre-Euro friendlies but it is clear he will need to be managed at the finals.
This week, boss Page, standing in for absent manager Ryan Giggs for the finals, faces a selection headache on Ramsey.
Page has spoken openly in the build-up that there is a nagging fear he could break down if he is pushed too hard, too soon.
So Page needs to work out what Ramsey’s best impact against the Swiss will be.
Does Ramsey, one of eight survivors from Euro 2016, start in the hope he can dictate the game like he did in France five summers ago against Slovakia, Russia and Belgium?
Does he gamble and use him in an unfamiliar false nine role which didn’t work against the Albanians at the weekend?
The Dragons will be praying Ramsey is on the ball this summerCredit: Alamy
Or does Page ease Ramsey into the tournament with a softer approach and pray the 63-cap ace can provide a moment of magic off the bench to win three points as the sun goes down in Baku, the intensity drops and the game opens up in the final half an hour?
Whatever decision Page opts for, Wales will need a firing Ramsey, who was suspended from the Euro 2016 semi-final defeat to Portugal, to progress into the knock-out stages as they bid to emulate Coleman’s Class of 2016.
Ramsey, who won’t be able to share rooms with close pal Chris Gunter due to Covid-19 bubble restrictions, added: “It’s a different set-up with a different environment. We’re all excited, not just me, a lot of the players who haven’t experienced this before. They’re really buzzing and we just can’t wait for the first whistle to go.
“It’s a very difficult group. But our target is to get out of the group so we’re going to have to be fully focussed, hit the ground running and it’s going to be essential for me.
“Obviously I haven’t played as much as I would have liked over the last few years but I definitely feel I’m one of the most experienced here now and the roles have changed for us to help along the younger players.
“From our experiences, talking to them, giving them advice, even though a lot of them already know how to perform at a high level. But just being able to talk about our experiences at Euro 2016 is only going to help us as a team.”

England new boy Ben White was making 300-mile trip back to Brighton when Gareth Southgate gave him shock call-up news

The central defender had left Middlesbrough in a car provided by the FA and was 90 minutes into the 300-mile journey south.
Yet after a quick conversation, which White will remember for the rest of his life, he mentally tore up his list of potential holiday destinations and turned his attention to Wembley.
Then, he prepared for a quick turnaround in Brighton before heading to St. George’s Park this morning to meet up with his new international team-mates.
After a jubilant phone call to his parents, Carole and Barry, the rest of the trip to the seaside on Sunday flew by as his head was now firmly in the clouds.
White, 23, impressed in his two games at Middlesbrough. He delivered a goal-line clearance to ensure a 1-0 win over Austria last week.
And the Albion ace then produced a measured display in an otherwise ropey Three Lions defensive performance in Sunday’s 1-0 victory against Romania.
James Ward-Prowse was the other main option to replace crocked Trent Alexander-Arnold and the Southampton schemer can count himself unlucky to miss out.
But England’s car-crash defending, which saw Tyrone Mings struggle in both friendlies, was clearly the reason why Southgate opted for another centre-back.
White’s route to Euro 2020 has been unconventional, as he had not been selected for England at any level until now.
BETTING SPECIAL – GET ENGLAND TO WIN EURO 2020 AND HARRY KANE TO BE TOP SCORER AT 18/1

He once heard of a potential selection for the Under-19s but it never materialised.
White comes from the Dorset town of Ferndown and with neither parent a football supporter, he was not pushed into the sport.
At an early age, he was thankful that a customer of his hairdresser mum agreed to go in goal in his back garden so he could practice his shooting.
After being rejected by Southampton aged 16, he joined Brighton and had successful loan spells at Newport, Peterborough and Leeds before enhancing his reputation for Graham Potter’s side at the Amex over the last year.
Southgate name-checked White for the first time when announcing his World Cup squad for the qualifiers in March.

While the coach said White was not quite ready to be selected in the spring, things have clearly changed. This team for Euro 2020 is proving to be a difficult puzzle to piece together.
England have a major problem in central defence, with Harry Maguire slowly recovering from ankle damage and Joe Gomez missing altogether.
Although Conor Coady has come in, England look short of quality and it seems likely they will switch to a back three for Sunday’s game against Croatia.
That could even open the door for White to start.
At the World Cup in Russia, Southgate only decided to play with a back three because he wanted to start Maguire but felt he was too inexperienced to play in a central two with John Stones.
Southgate accepted England’s defending as a team was poor on Sunday and was unhappy with the work-rate from his forwards.
He said: “I didn’t like us without the ball in the first half but that was the whole team. That started from the front.
Gareth Southgate criticised his side’s defending against RomaniaCredit: Getty
“We weren’t disciplined in the way we defended. Our recovery runs were not good enough. It meant that the midfield was stretched and the back players had too many decisions to make.
“They were having to come into spaces where they shouldn’t have needed to be. Without doubt we can improve on that.
“There is a lot of work to be done on the training ground as, without a doubt, we cannot give up the number of chances we did against Romania and not expect to be punished.”
Southgate now faces a big few days to select his team for the side which eliminated England from the 2018 World Cup semi-finals.
Asked how he decides the  starting XI, Southgate said: “We are constantly talking as a coaching staff, constantly looking at the players and looking at the opponent.
“Because the best team for the game with Croatia may not be the best team for the game with Scotland. We have to make sure we get those calls right.”

“I did not clearly see the point of impact. I knew that the foot was high, that a sending-off was an option.

England go into yet another tournament waiting on players to get fit – when will the Three Lions ever learn?

If they’d released another updated version of Three Lions for these Euros, then those might have been the most suitable lyrics.
It’s coming home — provided Harry Maguire (ankle) and Jordan Henderson (groin) pass late fitness tests.
Gareth Southgate said we’d never go down this path again. He experienced the circus surrounding a half-fit David Beckham at the 2002 World Cup and observed a similar situation with Wayne Rooney four years later.

Maguire and Henderson are not even comparable to Beckham or Rooney, both of whom were THE main men for England when we got out prayer mats and asked the big man to heal their broken metatarsals.
Harry Kane would be the only comparable figure today and the England skipper is merely coping with a long-term ankle weakness. Which we’d almost forgotten about.
Neither Maguire nor Henderson are truly world-class players and though they captain England’s two most famous clubs, we’re talking about one bloke who spent two nights in a Greek jail last summer and another who has just openly defied his manager’s orders.
When you’ve attended a year of behind-closed-doors matches, you do recognise who the lead vocalists are.
And from my earwigging, Maguire and Henderson were two of the four shoutiest men in the Premier League last season, along with Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel and former Crystal Palace assistant manager Ray Lewington.
Harry Maguire is facing a race against time to be fit to face CroatiaCredit: Getty
Boss Gareth Southgate has taken a risk by selecting unfit playersCredit: Getty
Maguire is an expert badgerer of referees and a fine organiser of United’s defence.
Henderson is a top-class cajoler, talking team-mates through games, in a way that Kane doesn’t.
In a relatively inexperienced squad, they do leave genuine holes.
But surely neither man is going to start games in the group stage, in which England’s final match is just two weeks today.
And Southgate’s team are then likely to face an extremely tough last-16 game against France, Portugal, Germany or Spain.
With that in mind, both seem frivolous, ill-advised selections.
Southgate argues that an expanded 26-man squad makes picking Maguire and Henderson justifiable.
But on Sunday, he faced a tough decision before choosing Brighton centre-back Ben White over Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold in his squad.
Given Maguire’s injury and Tyrone Mings’ poor form, there is every chance White is not just going along to make up the numbers.
David Beckham wasn’t fully fit during the 2002 World CupCredit: PA
And had Ward-Prowse got the nod, you could easily envisage him coming off the bench in a tight match, given his set-piece prowess.
So Henderson’s selection is bizarre, as best articulated by Roy Keane before England kicked off against Romania on Sunday.
He snarled: “I’ve heard people say they want him around the place. For what? Does he do card tricks? Does he have a sing-song? Does he do quizzes in the evening?”
Now Keane can sometimes become a caricature of himself, scatter- gunning his hard-nut insults.
But this time he nailed Southgate, his former ITV sofa buddy, who worked alongside him at Euro 2012 — another tournament Rooney struggled to ‘play himself into’ because of suspension rather than injury.
And Keane’s words seemed especially prescient when Henderson — who has never scored for England and missed a World Cup shootout spot-kick against Colombia — snatched a penalty from Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hands and saw his effort saved by Romanian keeper Florin Nita.
This was entirely out of character from Henderson, a genuine team man and certainly no rampant egotist.
But when you haven’t played for 3½ months and are desperately trying to prove your fitness for a tournament, that’s exactly when a player can go rogue.

    SunSport columnist Dave Kidd
Southgate is trying too hard with Henderson and, as a result, Henderson tried too hard for Southgate.
Yes it was a meaningless friendly and England just about sneaked a 1-0 victory anyway.
But that episode was a serious indictment of the folly of selecting unfit players.
Southgate was fuming afterwards, perhaps recognising that this one was, partly, on him.
With Declan Rice starting against Croatia and the brilliant 17-year-old Jude Bellingham and solid Kalvin Phillips in reserve, the inclusion of Ward-Prowse would have given England enough decent, fit, central midfield options.
Maguire is more important to Southgate than Henderson, given England’s lack of depth at centre-back, especially with Joe Gomez a long-term absentee.
But even old Slab-head, that summer-of-love cult hero in Russia, feels as if he is just there because Southgate likes ‘having him around the place’.
Who knows, maybe Maguire does card tricks too. Maybe he’ll have a sing-song.
Does anyone know any decent football anthems?

EVEN after Gareth Southgate made an impassioned defence of his players taking the knee, they were booed as they did it before Sunday’s friendly against Romania.
He spoke long and hard about the issue on Saturday, then said he didn’t want to discuss it again during the tournament — though he answered one post-match question in Middlesbrough.
The England boss could not have been clearer in articulating his players’ motives in taking the knee, but he still correctly assumed some would boo.
Southgate understands the wide-ranging, almost statesmanlike, role of England manager and tackles that side of the job better than any predecessor.
But when he says he’d like to draw a line under the issue for the duration of the Euros he is correct.
His players will not benefit from fighting a prolonged culture war.
And those attention-seeking eff-wits who boo an anti-racist gesture, then peddle fairy stories about millionaire footballers supporting Marxism, do not want to listen to reason.
They want to be heard. And denying them publicity’s oxygen may be a more successful tactic.
England will continue to take the knee before every game at the EurosCredit: PA

BEFORE Declan Rice’s England debut in 2019, a couple of pro-IRA tweets were unearthed from five years previously.
The West Ham midfielder had switched allegiance from the Republic of Ireland two years ago — and the tweets were from when he was 15.
Rice apologised, we all moved on and he is now widely recognised as a thoroughly likeable and intelligent man.
When Ollie Robinson made his England Test cricket debut last Wednesday, it emerged the pace bowler had published sexist and racist tweets in 2012, aged 18.
These tweets were more troubling than Rice’s but few men do not grow up significantly between the ages of 18 and 27.
He was suspended, dropped and hammered by the ECB. Cricket’s authorities are right to have a strong voice on anti- discrimination but one can only hope Robinson — England’s best bowler against New Zealand — is able to thrive at the top level, as Rice has done.

World Cup holders France are among the favourites to triumph at Euro 2020
    When does it start?
You can sign-up for Dream Team Euros right now – it should be available via the Dream Team app (you may have to refresh your app) but users can also access the game through Dream Team’s site.
You’ll be able to pick a prototype XI before team entry opens on May 21st – all player prices are subject to change until then.If your prototype team is revealed to be over budget you’ll have to shuffle the pack until it’s valid but don’t worry, you can make as many changes as you want before the tournament gets underway.
Scoring starts once the first game kicks off, which is Turkey v Italy at 8pm on June 11th, and finishes after the final on July 11th.
You can still enter a team after the first match has kicked off but you won’t get any points for the games that have already taken place or started – it’s best to settle on starting XI before the first kick-off.
Harry Kane already has one Golden Boot at a major international tournament – could he fire England to glory this summer?
    Which players should you pick?
Goals are worth their weight in gold so you’ll want to include some Golden Boot favourites – Robert Lewandowksi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku and Kylian Mbappe all catch the eye but these big names will drain your budget so think carefully.
It’s a similar story in midfield, N’Golo Kante may be world-class at what he does but he doesn’t score many goals – the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Kevin De Bruyne are more likely to etch their names on the scoresheet.
At the back, you want a keeper and defenders capable of registering consistent clean sheets.
Belgium conceded just three goals in their qualifying campaign so perhaps Thibaut Courtois is a prime candidate?

What are the groups at Euro 2021?
Your strategy will likely depend on the fixtures. Players facing tough opponents are less likely to score points than those with a relatively easy ride – at least in theory.
With that in mind, here’s a reminder of the groups…
GROUP A: Italy, Turkey, Wales, Switzerland
GROUP B: Belgium, Denmark, Russia, Finland
GROUP C: Netherlands, Austria, Ukraine, North Macedonia

The Bayern Munich star has remained first-choice for club and country for over a decade and lifted the World Cup in 2014.
Before Die Mannschaft’s game against Latvia on Monday, he donned a special pair of ‘100’ gloves to mark the occasion.
And the Neuer was warmly welcomed into Dusseldorf’s Merkur Spielarena as he captained his country for the landmark.
No keeper from the men’s national team had reached 100 caps for Germany before the 35-year-old, with 1970s star Sepp Maier coming closest on 95.
Silke Rottenberg and Nadine Angerer have both achieved the feat for the women’s side.
Joachim Low said ahead of the game: “From the first moment he was with us, I had the feeling he would go on to be one of the world’s great goalkeepers.”

Neuer is expected to be first-choice for Germany’s Euro 2020 bid, with Kevin Trapp and Arsenal’s Bernd Leno also in the squad.
And he watched on as his team-mates dismantled Latvia having drawn with Denmark in their other warm-up friendly.
Ilkay Gundogan and Serge Gnabry were both on the scoresheet as Low’s men led 5-0 by half-time before Timo Werner and Leroy Sane made it 7-1.
World champions France await in Munich for the opening game of their Group F campaign on June 15.

England legend Rio Ferdinand blasts ‘ignorant’ fans who booed knee and says they ‘haven’t got a clue’

RIO FERDINAND has slammed fans who boo England players taking the knee as ‘ignorant’.A number of supporters at the Three Lions’ Euro 2020 warm-up friendlies jeered the pre-game gesture.

Footballers have largely backed taking the knee to emphasise their stand against racism, with many stars abused in escalating scenes online.
The hate has not been limited to social media however, with ex-defender Ferdinand targeted while working as a pundit during Manchester United’s recent game at Wolves.
And while some have criticised taking a knee for having links to political aspects of the Black Lives Matter movement, the 42-year-old has strongly denied any association between the two.
Ferdinand told his YouTube channel: “These fans, these ignorant people going to these games, they haven’t got a clue.
“They don’t know what the players are kneeling for. It’s not a political stance.
“All these people saying, ‘BLM is a political movement’ – [the knee] is nothing to do with [BLM]. So take that out of your mind.

There is no valid reason for booing. They’re meant to be here helping the team, pushing them along.Rio Ferdinand
“The players, the manager are telling you, ‘This is not a political campaign, the reason why we kneel is nothing to do with politics’.
“This stance is about racism, about people being treated the right way and respectfully, and not based on the colour of their skin.
“There is no valid reason for booing. They’re meant to be here helping the team, pushing them along.
“The players’ narrative around this is nothing to do with politics so please just support this team, support these players.

“They don’t want injustice, they don’t want people to be judged off the colour of their skin. And they’re kneeling because of that. So why are you booing?”
A number of Conservative Party MPs and right-wing pundits have fuelled claims that taking a knee is a political gesture.
England manager Gareth Southgate has criticised those booing his players and explained: “We feel, more than ever, we are determined to take the knee throughout the tournament.
“We accept there might be an adverse reaction but we’re going to ignore it and move forward.

“We are all trying to move towards equality — and support our team-mates because of some of the experiences they’ve been through — but people decided to boo.
“The players are sick of talking about all the consequences of should they, shouldn’t they.
“They’ve had enough really. And as far as I’m concerned, they are not going to take any more questions on this through the tournament. If it happens, it happens.
“Their voices have been made loud and clear. They are making their stand — but they want the focus to be on football.”
