PHIL FODEN paid tribute to Paul Gascoigne by recreating the England icon’s famous haircut from Euro 96.The Manchester City star has fans hoping the new look will help him inspire the Three Lions this summer the way Gazza did 25 years ago.

Foden – who has already been compared to Gascoigne in terms of playing style – took things to a new level by unveiling his fresh trim for the Euros.
Ahead of England’s first Group D game against Croatia on Sunday, the 21-year-old revealed he has bleached his usually dark locks blonde.
And in case any fans were in doubt about the Gascoigne reference, Foden captioned a picture on his Instagram story: “Euro 96 vibes.”

Explaining his new look, the attacker said: “I’ve had the same haircut for ages now. I thought I’d try something new.
“I woke up this morning with a lot of comparisons to Gazza and Eminem, it was my own thing and people have turned it into something else.”
Foden, who claimed the rest of England’s squad reacted positively to the change, will now be hoping to emulate his idol’s exploits at Wembley.
Gazza shone for England back in 1996 as the Three Lions reached the semi-finals on home soil.
It was also at Wembley against Scotland where he scored one of the country’s most iconic goals – the same location and rivals Foden is set to face later this month.

“It wouldn’t be too bad if I tried to bring a bit of Gazza on the pitch! I’ve dyed it now so it’s got to stay around, not going away any time soon.”

And he trained separate from the rest of the team on Monday.
Now the KNVB have confirmed Van de Beek is ‘struggling with an injury’ and has been ruled out.
United team-mate Marcus Rashford sent a message of support for his pal.
The England forward tweeted: “sorry mate @Donny_beek6 take some time for yourself and keep your head high x”

“National coach Frank de Boer does not call for a replacement for Van de Beek.”
The Dutch get their Group C campaign underway against Ukraine on Sunday before taking on Austria and North Macedonia.
Van de Beek’s injury is a miserable end to a disappointing season.
He made his £39million transfer from Ajax to Old Trafford last summer but has struggled in England.
Unable to dislodge Bruno Fernandes out of the United No10 spot and less suited to a defensive midfield role, Van de Beek made just 19 Premier League appearances – four as a starter.
His only goal came in the defeat on the opening day of the season against Crystal Palace and the one assist was at home to Burnley in April.
He was linked with an exit – to Jose Mourinho’s Roma or a return to Ajax – but SunSport understands the Red Devils will reject any approaches.

‘Land of Fire’ Azerbaijan can’t wait to host Wales fans at Euro 2020… until they play Turkey

THEY have the longest journey of any team in Euro 2020, but Wales fans are being welcomed with open arms in Azerbaijan. The country was one of only three – the other two being Hungary and Russia – to tell Uefa in April that fans of all teams playing at the national stadium could enter without quarantine.

Wales face by far the longest journey of any team at Euro 2020 as they travel to AzerbaijanCredit: PA
Wales will stay ten days in Baku as they face Switzerland and TurkeyCredit: Getty
Azerbaijan FA (AFFA) Vice-President Elkhan Mammadov told SunSport: “We believe the participating countries’ fans have to be able to fly and support their teams. It’s very important.”
The Azerbaijanis have also made a huge statement of intent by announcing games in Baku will take place at 50 per cent capacity, while venues like Wembley will only be a quarter full for the group stage.
Wales fans determined to make the 6,000-mile round trip will need only a match ticket and a negative PCR test to enter Azerbaijan.
“They can get a visa on arrival by presenting a match ticket or they can get a visa online in advance. There’s no quarantine.”
Azerbaijan is hoping up to two thousand fans of Robert Page’s side will brave six-hour flights each way and a ten-day quarantine on return to the UK.

As long as they have a match ticket and a negative PCR test, Wales fans will be free to enjoy BakuCredit: EPA
Azerbaijan’s FA is hopeful of up to two thousand Welsh fans flying to Baku for the tournamentCredit: Getty
But the warm welcome the Dragons get won’t necessarily extend to support for the team on the pitch in one particular fixture – Wales vs Turkey.
Mammodov said: “Because we speak almost the same language, because we have a shared history, because it’s our region and we have six or seven flights a day to Istanbul, most of the locals will support Turkey.”
Turkey has become a second team for people in Azerbaijan – a country that has never qualified for an international football tournament, with youngsters typically excelling in chess instead.
He added: “Every family in Baku, every person, every kid can play chess and we have produced World Cup winners.”
President Ilham Aliyev’s late father even described the Azerbaijanis and Turks as one nation with two countries.
But Mammodov did say: “I think for Wales vs Switzerland, whoever is more active socially with the local people will earn more support.”
And there will be plenty of time for that with bars in Baku open as normal, rules around wearing masks outside scrapped and pints costing £1.50.

Wales fans are set for perfect beach weather during Euro 2020Credit: Getty – Contributor
“The great thing is it’s a holiday, not a two or three-day trip.
“Wales are here longer than any other team. They arrived [Monday] and they don’t leave until June 17.
“You can get a full taste of Baku city, the weather is wonderful and the beach is only a 25-minute drive away.”
In 2014, Atletico Madrid memorably won La Liga and reached the Champions League final in shirts with the sponsor ‘Azerbaijan: Land of Fire’ – a private venture from a rich patriot keen to boost tourism.
Mammodov said: “Land of Fire in terms of passion, in terms of history and in terms of energy.
“15 or 16 centuries ago there was a big religion of fire believers here, who built fire temples.”
The Baku Fire Temple is a Unesco World Heritage Site and one of the top tourism sites in Azerbaijan today.
But Mammodov adds: “Later we realised it was just gas and oil.”

Not that Azerbaijan has done badly out of gas and oil, with their £280m new stadium built in 2015 and hosting Chelsea vs Arsenal in the 2019 Europa League final.
But in the longer term Azerbaijan wants to qualify for major tournaments rather than just hosting them.
Mammodov said: “This is one of our dreams and my personal dream.
“Until now, we have been a country of individual sports. Wrestling, judo, karate, chess… and refereeing.
“Tofiq Bahramov, who you call the ‘Russian linesman’ that won England the 1966 World Cup, was actually from Azerbaijan. His grandson worked with us at the AFFA until recently.
The ‘Russian linesman’ from the 1966 World Cup final Tofiq Bahramov is honoured with a statue outside the stadium named after him in BakuCredit: Getty Images – Getty

“We are working for qualification and trying to achieve it.
“We’re laying the foundations with the achievements of Qarabag, Neftchi and Gabala – three clubs playing in the Europa League group stage.
“So I think it won’t be long until our national team is seen at a European Championship.”
For now however, hosting Wales, Switzerland and especially Turkey will more than do. More

Stephen Kenny wants fledgling Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu to experience battle amid a hostile atmosphere as he attempts to steel him for September’s World Cup qualifiers.
The 19-year-old Manchester City keeper, who spent last season on loan at League One Rochdale, was handed a senior debut for his country in March’s World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg with number one Darren Randolph and Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher injured, and has retained his place since.
However, asked if the uncapped Kelleher, 22, would get his chance in Tuesday night’s friendly against Hungary in front of a partisan crowd at the Szusza Ferenc Stadion in Budapest, Kenny admitted he had a big decision to make.
Bazunu is one of a series of young players to have been handed their chance by Kenny, 19-year-old Tottenham striker Troy Parrott also catching the eye with two goals against Andorra, and Egan admits they have dealt admirably with the pressure of the step up. More

He said: “As a striker, if you are scoring, you are helping the team. That’s always my aim — and to win.
“Of course, I’d love to win another Golden Boot. More importantly, I’d love to be lifting that Euros trophy.
“Whatever way we get there, whether it’s me scoring or others, it doesn’t bother me as long as we are winning games.
“That’s why we play football on the highest stage, to be involved in the biggest games. Once most guys are on the pitch, instinct takes over.”
But Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate said: “The individual awards are very special and have been richly deserved.

“But Harry is at that moment with us when you forget about the number of caps and goals and you are thinking about the team having success.
“If the team progresses, there is more chance he will hit those numbers as he will have more games.”
Southgate has been hit by a string of injuries and selection headaches.
Yet Kane claims England have a stronger squad than three years ago.
Speaking to the Official England Podcast, he added: “We’re probably in a better place.
“I feel now we’ve had more experience, players playing in the biggest games for their club and players who have played in that World Cup.
“We know there is still a lot of hard work that goes into it.
“We don’t just turn up and win the tournament.
“We haven’t won as a country for a long, long time, so there needs to be a good mentality.
“The tournament environment is difficult. You are away from your family and friends for a long time, so we’re there to create a real brotherhood among ourselves.
“There’s going to be moments when players are down and it’s just about picking each other up, talking to each other and keeping each other focused.”

Kane is relishing the prospect of facing Croatia, who beat England 2-1 in the World Cup semi- final.
The skipper added: “It’s a game that hurts. We wanted to win and get to a World Cup final, but in football, it doesn’t always pan out how you want.
“We just fell short in that moment.
“It’s the first game of a major tournament and the most important thing is to beat them and get off to a good start.”
