Ukraine ordered to change Euro 2020 kit on eve of tournament after furious Russia complain over controversial strip

UEFA has asked Ukraine to change their Euro 2020 kit following a complaint from Russia. The issue was sparked on Sunday when Ukraine released their kit for the tournament as the front of the strip shows off a map of the country that includes Crimea.

The Ukraine strip features a ‘Glory to Ukraine!’ slogan on the back
Another slogan reads ‘Glory to the heroes!’, which may be why Uefa has requested a change
Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, considering the area to be part of their territory.
And that is why the Russian Football Association has submitted a complaint to Uefa, despite the United Nations still recognising Crimea as being part of Ukraine.
But according to French journalist Francois Pinet, Uefa has taken Russia’s side in the dispute.
He tweeted: “UEFA steps in and asks Ukraine to change shirt following Russia’s discontent.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also posed with the shirt, so Uefa may be keen to get rid of the politics behind the design.
After all, Ukraine’s shirt also includes well-known military slogans on the inside and on the back of the kit.
They read: “Glory to Ukraine!” and “Glory to the heroes!”, and that may be why Uefa have asked them to change kits.

Ex-Arsenal star William Gallas predicts France will win Euro 2020 because of Karim Benzema return and World Cup triumph

WILLIAM GALLAS believes France’s World Cup triumph and the return of Karim Benzema will fire them to Euro 2020 glory. Didier Deschamps’ side head into this summer’s tournament as favourites and boast arguably the most strength in depth of all 24 nations.
Opponents will be afraid of Benzema, Gallas believesCredit: AFP
Gallas knows a bit about playing for France, having won 84 capsCredit: PA:Empics Sport
Of the 26-man squad, 14 became world champions in Russia three years ago.
And Gallas reckons that could prove critical, as it did in 2000 and 2012, especially in the Group of Death with Germany, Portugal and Hungary.
He told SunSport: “We have a big chance to lift the trophy. We have the strongest squad in the tournament.
“Winning the World Cup will definitely help them win the Euros.
“When you win the World Cup, often they win the European Championships. We did it in 1998, we won the World Cup and two years later, we won the Euros. Spain did the same.”
One of the 12 players brought in is Karim Benzema.
He was exiled for six years for his alleged role in a sex-tape blackmail of former French team-mate Mathieu Valbuena – an allegation Benzema has always denied – but was reintroduced after a 30-goal season for Real Madrid.
Benzema limped off with a knee problem in Tuesday’s 3-0 friendly win over Bulgaria but Deschamps is confident the striker will be available to face Germany on Tuesday.
Benzema should be fit despite suffering a knock against BulgariaCredit: AFP

Gallas added: “Karim Benzema has come back and we have a strong, strong striker in him.
“Everybody knows Benzema is one of the best strikers in the world. He had a great season.
“He was not selected for some reasons but stayed strong in his head, focused on what he had to do.
“Opponents will be afraid to play against Kylian Mbappe and Benzema. They have got a lot of qualities to play together.
“I’m sure both of them will score goals. I wouldn’t want to defend against them.”
In midfield, N’Golo Kante and Paul Pogba will hope to link up successfully once again.

Gallas suggested the Champions League winner is the best player in the world right now but is unsure why Pogba often performs better for his country than for Manchester United.
The former Arsenal and Chelsea defender, representing 888sport, added: “What Kante did this season with Chelsea was unbelievable.
“Who is better than him? We don’t have to be a former player to know how good he is.
“Everybody likes to speak about strikers because they score the goals. But N’Golo deserves to win the Ballon d’Or. N’Golo has won everything.”
On Pogba, Gallas continued: “He had some injuries this season. Everyone wants to see him playing as he was for Juventus because he was magnificent there.
“Everybody knows his quality. It was difficult for him, he was under a lot of pressure on his shoulders.”

Which teams are taking the knee at Euro 2020?

EURO 2020 is on its way and one new feature of the tournament looks set to be the differing stance teams will take against racism.England have become embroiled in a big row with the players condemning fans who booed them taking the knee against Austria and Romania.
England will continue taking the knee throughout Euro 2020Credit: PA
And manager Gareth Southgate said the players are even more determined to take the knee following the booing.
Here’s what all 24 teams will be doing during the tournament.
Which teams are taking the knee at Euro 2020?
    England
England will continue to take the knee during Euro 2020, as they have been since the murder of George Floyd last year.
The team have stated that they believe the gesture is not a political one and designed simply to show support for racial equality.
Gareth Southgate said: “I think we have got a situation where some people seem to think it is a political stand that they don’t agree with.
“That is not the reason the players are doing it. We are supporting each other.”
    Wales

Wales have taken the knee over the past year and will continue to do so.
Interim manager Rob Page said: “We had a meeting and we all think it’s still important to take the knee.
“That’s the message we’ve given out. We’re all in it together and there were no issues.”
    Belgium
Belgium are the only non-British team to announce they will take the knee throughout Euro 2020.
Romelu Lukaku said of any negative reactions: “I don’t care. I fight for diversity.
“Not only for the black community, also for the women. Colour, sexuality, faith, it doesn’t matter. Everybody should be respected.”
Which teams will not take the knee at Euro 2020?
    Hungary
Hungary point to the Uefa Respect badge as Ireland take the kneeCredit: Reuters
The Hungarian FA are the first association to confirm they will not take the knee at Euro 2020.
In a statement they said they view the knee as a political gesture in defiance of Uefa and Fifa rules.
It read: “The basic values of the sport are equal opportunities, respect for the teammate and the opponent.
“Football may have become the most popular sport in the world because it belongs to everyone.
“The Hungarian national team not only follows the international rules and norms in all cases, but also pays tribute to everyone – be it an opponent, a fan or anyone else.
“MLSZ has been fighting all forms of hatred for years as part of the ‘Hate is not a track’ campaign.
“The rules of UEFA and FIFA do not allow politicization on the pitch and in the stadium either, which the MLSZ not only accepts but also agrees with.
“The national team will not express its condemnation of any form of hatred by kneeling before the matches.”
During their warm-up game against Ireland, Hungary pointed to the Uefa Respect logo on the sleeves of their shirts while the Irish team took the knee and were booed by a sizeable portion of the 15,000 crowd.

    Croatia
England’s first opponents at Euro 2020 do not intend to take the knee.
An official statement read: “CFF and the players are against any form of discrimination.
“But the FA provides the players with the right to choose, as the act itself isn’t a part of Croatian culture and heritage.
“The players chose not to kneel down before the Belgium game, but they’ve taken a respectful stance towards the gesture made by their Belgium colleagues.”

What are the other teams doing?
    Italy
Serie A players took the knee last summer, however the national team did not take the knee in their most recent friendly against Czech Republic.
It is not known whether the Azzurri will remain standing, take the knee in all their games or only take the knee against Wales.

    Turkey

Turkey have not taken the knee in their recent internationals.
However, club side Istanbul Basaksehir did kneel against PSG after alleging that their assistant manager Pierre Webo was racially abused by fourth official Sebastian Coltescu.
Coltescu was revealed to have told referee Ovidiu Hategan to book “the black one” when pointing to the Basaksehir bench.
Uefa adjudged Coltescu to have been guilty of “inappropriate behaviour” but not racism and suspended him until the end of the 2020/21 season.
    On the fence
    Switzerland
Switzerland have not taken the knee in their recent games and their stance for the Euros is not known.
    On the fence
    Denmark
Denmark took the knee against both England and Belgium last autumn.
Christian Eriksen said at the time: “We all support the fight against all forms of racism.”
They have also joined other national teams in supporting political causes such as the ‘Football supports CHANGE’ initiative, condemning World Cup 2022 hosts Qatar’s treatment of migrant workers.
Their stance on the gesture in the Euros is unknown.
    Lean yes
    Finland
Finland took the knee before their Uefa Nations League game against Wales and were vocally supportive of the gesture.
Captain Tim Sparv said: “The whole team stood behind it. All the players and the backroom staff wanted to oppose racism.”
Their stance on performing the gesture at the Euros is unknown.
    Lean yes

    Russia
Russia have not made any public comment on taking the knee but their national team has never performed the gesture.
Russian side Krasnodar allowed their players to make their own decision on kneeling before their Champions League games against Chelsea.
In Russia, four players chose to kneel while at Stamford Bridge eight players decided to perform the gesture.
    Lean no
    Holland
The Dutch team have a number of players who have been vocal in their support of Black Lives Matter.
However, when they played Scotland and Georgia in their recent warm-up games, both teams chose not to kneel.
Holland have also been vocal in support of improved conditions for migrant workers in Qatar, alongside Norway, Denmark and Germany.
They have made no comment on taking the knee at Euro 2020.
    On the fence
    Austria
Austria chose to join England in taking the knee in their recent friendly in Middlesbrough.
It is not known whether they will do so in their Euro 2020 games.

    North Macedonia
North Macedonia have not declared any position on taking the knee.
    Lean no
    Ukraine
Ukraine have not announced a position on taking the knee.
    Lean no
    Scotland
Scotland stopped taking the knee in March with manager Steve Clarke suggesting the gesture had become diluted.
He stated: “Recent events and past events show that you have to keep changing people’s mindsets about racism.
“I think the knee when it was first proposed and first taken was a really powerful symbol.
“It’s maybe now become a little diluted, there’s been some high profile cases recently, which shows the racism and the abuse is still there. It’s not acceptable to anybody.
“And maybe just taking a stand as opposed to the knee will just waken everybody up to the fact that if we go to sleep it will never go away.
“We have to keep confronting it, pushing forward and making sure that in years to come racism of any form is not acceptable.”
However, after England players were booed for kneeling at the Riverside, Clarke left open the possibility of the gesture returning.
He said: “It’s a conversation I’ll have with the players before we play our first game.
“Then we’ll decide what way we’re going to do it throughout the Euros.
“Whether that’s to take a stand against racism or take a knee, we’ll decide as a squad and then we’ll carry it on throughout the tournament.”
    On the fence

    Czech Republic
Czech Republic refused to take the knee in their game against Wales in March and are highly unlikely to do so at Euro 2020.
The Czechs decided to point to the Uefa Respect logo in their sleeves on that occasion as a “neutral, apolitical gesture”.
The players will discuss the gesture again before the Euros.
However they are thought to be less likely than ever to take the knee after being angered by the ten-game suspension Uefa handed down to defender Ondrej Kudela after he was found to have racially abused Rangers’ Glen Kamara.
    No chance
    Spain
While some La Liga players have shown solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, the Spain team have never taken the knee and their clubs also tend not to.
Real Madrid did not take the knee against Chelsea, Liverpool or Manchester City while Villarreal chose not to kneel against Man Utd in the Europa League final.
When Granada played Man Utd, only Brazil winger Kenedy took the knee.
Spain have made no statement on taking the knee at Euro 2020.

Poland are almost certain not to take the knee at Euro 2020 with the gesture being criticised by both their FA president and sections of their support.
The Poles refused to kneel against England and instead pointed to the Uefa Respect logo on their sleeves.
Polish FA President Zbigniew Boniek labelled the gesture “populism” that “achieved nothing” and said: “I am absolutely against such actions.
“Footballers sometimes kneel, and if you asked some of them why they were kneeling, they wouldn’t even know.”
    No chance
    Slovakia
Slovakia took the knee against Ireland and Scotland last October but were criticised in the Slovakian parliament.
After this, the country’s FA said the players had only taken the knee because they believed Uefa had instructed them to do so and would no longer perform the gesture.

    Portugal
Portugal have not taken the knee in their warm-up friendlies though many of their Europe-based players have done so in their domestic leagues.
They have made no statement on performing the gesture at the Euros.
    On the fence
    France
France took the knee in their first warm-up friendly against Wales but not in their second one against Bulgaria.
This would suggest that they will only take the knee during Euro 2020 if the opposition does.
They have made no statement on what they intend to do during the tournament.
    On the fence
    Germany
Bundesliga players took the knee after the murder of George Floyd last season.
However, the national team have not been kneeling in 2021.

It’s a major boost for fans wanting to attend this summer’s tournament.
Parken in Copenhagen will let in 25,000 spectators up from 15,900 that was initially planned.
And there will be up to 27,000 fans in attendance for games in Bucharest.
Both stadiums will host three group stage fixtures and a round of 16 tie in the tournament.
England, meanwhile are awaiting a Government decision on June 21 to see how many fans will be allowed in at Wembley.
The Government, FA and Uefa have agreed to cap crowds at 22,500 for the three group matches, 25 per cent of Wembley’s capacity.
But successful use of a vaccine passport starting on Sunday will allow bigger crowds to attend the knock-out stages and could see more than 45,000 at the final next month.
Fans seeking to attend the games against Croatia, Scotland and the Czech Republic at Wembley will have to show the NHS app confirming they have received both Covid jabs at least 14 days before or a negative lateral flow test taken within 48 hours of the game.

They state: “All ticket holders aged 11 and older must present evidence that they are at a low-risk of transmitting Covid-19 to enter Wembley Stadium.
“Failure to do so will mean you’re unable to attend the match.”

The email added: “Proof of full vaccination – both doses received at least 14 days prior to the match (demonstrated via the NHS App or via the Scottish or Welsh vaccination record services).
“Or proof of a negative Lateral Flow Test (LFT), reported and demonstrated via a text message or email from NHS Test and Trace.
“This can be on your device (including a screenshot) or a printout.
“The test needs to be taken within 48 hours of the time stadium gates open (meaning three hours before match kick-off).

England being backed to win Euro 2020 YouGov poll finds – but most fans would rather see club succeed than Three Lions

ALMOST a quarter of England fans think the Three Lions will win Euro 2020, a YouGov survey has revealed.More than 2000 fans were questioned about the upcoming Euros on behalf of Betfair, with 23 per cent of England fans backing Gareth Southgate’s side to go all the way.

England fans have backed their team to win more than any other team in the tournament
England fans are less loyal to their country than Wales or Scotland fans
Scotland and Wales fans also took part in the survey, but just 5 per cent of Scots and 7 per cent of Welsh fans backed England to win their first Euros.
However, 35 per cent of Scotland fans and 47 per cent of Wales fans will cheer on England, and former Three Lions boss Glenn Hoddle is pleased by the level of support.
He told Betfair: “I’m quite happy with that percentage, I thought it would be far less cheering England on. It’s always been this way, and I doubt it will change for this tournament.
“23 per cent seems a fair number, right on the money. We have a chance without any shadow of a doubt, with some good players – it’s never going to be 80 per cent of the country thinking we’ll win, is it?”
Optimism amongst England fans is high after a successful World Cup, with more supporters backing Southgate’s side over any other.
France rank second with 21 per cent of the vote, while 2016’s winners Portugal – another bookies favourite – rank sixth with just 3 per cent.

In fact, 38 per cent of England fans are more confident ahead of this tournament than the 2018 World Cup, with 30 per cent suggesting Southgate will be a big factor.
And 55 per cent of England fans who think England will win the Euros believe this is the best England team since the golden generation of 2006.
Players like Phil Foden are a factor in that thinking – 82 per cent of England fans think he should start against Croatia on Sunday.
But despite the renewed optimism, the survey reveals that many supporters still favour club over country.

Of the Big Six, Tottenham fans have the greatest allegiance to their club over their country

On average, 57 per cent of football fans in England would rather their team was promoted or won the league over England winning the Euros.
Arsenal and Tottenham fans are the biggest culprits of that thinking, with 60 per cent and 67 per cent of their fans putting club over country.
By contrast, only 42 per cent of West Ham fans and 44 per cent of Manchester United fans would rather they won the league instead of England winning Euro 2020.

Pub drinkers to be banned from singing songs like ‘Football’s Coming Home’ due to Covid rules

FANS drinking in the pub over the weekend will be banned from singing ‘Football’s Coming Home’ and ‘God Save the Queen’.Downing Street has set rules that prohibit customers from singing, especially loudly, because it’s considered a transmission risk.
Fans are banned from singing and standing in the pubCredit: Alamy
The current rules mean that any music in a pub should be played at a low, almost background level, to prevent any shouting, singing or dancing occurring over the top of it.
The government’s guidance covers any hospitality venue for that matter, so it’s not just pubs, and includes restaurants, bars and similar places serving food or drink as well.
Owners and staff at venues will have to adhere to the rules and make sure punters are obeying them too, especially if they are showing the Euro 2020 games this weekend where spirits will likely be running high.
It means fans won’t be able to sing the usual chants that would normally be part of the roaring atmosphere found at the pub during a big football match.
New pub rules from May 17THE latest easing of restrictions came into place on May 17, but there are still rules to follow until the complete easing is due to happen on June 21. These are:

    The rule of six inside
Party up to 30 allowed outside
    Only table service allowed
    Contactless ordering where available
Relaxed limits on max number of customers
Staff must wear masks and gloves
Customers must each check in with the NHS app
Social distancing to be adhered to

Legal expert Graeme Cushion, a specialist in pub licensing, said: “I suspect our patriotism – particularly if England is doing well in the tournament – may get the better of us.”
There are also rules that mean standing and singing are a definite no-no too, as pubs and other venues must continue table service at the current time.
Mr Cushion, a partner at top London law firm Poppleston Allen, said: “Businesses showing games may ask you to sit down and not stand up to sing.
“And if indoors, as soon as you do stand up, you should wear a face mask, which is going to make singing somewhat more awkward.”
The British beer and pub association surveyed 1,000 pub-goers and 85% of supporters have said restrictions will ruin watching the Euros down at the local.
It means there is more pressure on PM Boris Johnson to push ahead with “Freedom Day” on June 21 where restrictions, especially on how hospitality operates, will be lifted and things are set to go back to “normal”.
Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the British Beer & Pub Association, said: “More and more people are getting the vaccine each day.
“It’s time for the restrictions on our freedoms to be replaced by the protection of the vaccination and for businesses and life to get back to normal.”
But it comes as Covid cases have more than doubled in one week despite the massive vaccination rollout attempts.

Mr Johnson has said he may adopt a “mix-and-match approach” to lifting the restrictions on the expected dat though.
But there will be a lift on the 30-person limit on weddings even if the June 21 easing of lockdown is delayed, it’s been reported.
In the meantime, Greene King is giving away FREE pints this weekend – so check out how you can get your hands on one.

The Man Utd centre-back and Liverpool midfielder both had injury doubts hanging over them heading into the tournament.
It’s too early to tell whether either man could feature in Sunday’s opener against Croatia at Wembley.
But seeing two senior men and leaders back among the rest of the group is a shot in the arm for Southgate.
England face Scotland next Friday at Wembley before taking on Czech Republic in their final group game on June 22.
Henderson played 45 minutes in the friendly win over Romania on Sunday having missed the end of Liverpool’s season.
Maguire, meanwhile, hasn’t played since May 9 and missed the last few games of Man Utd’s campaign including the Europa League final.
Henderson’s inclusion in the final 26-man squad was a talking point after his injury problems.
ITV pundit Roy Keane questioned the decision to select the Liverpool midfielder after missing the last few months of the Premier League season.

Speaking before Sunday’s game against Romania, Keane said: “Clearly Jordan’s not fit – I don’t think he should be involved.
“If he can’t start the game against Romania – because physically and mentally today’s game won’t be that tough for him – having not kicked a ball for three-and-a-half months he can’t be right.
“I’ve heard people say they want him around the place – for what? Does he do card tricks? Does he have a sing song? Does he do quizzes in the evenings?

“What does he do? Jordan’s an experienced player.
“Surely Jordan doesn’t want to be around the place as some sort of cheerleader – you want to play and he’s clearly nowhere near it.”
Henderson came on at half-time in the 1-0 win in Middlesbrough.
It was the first 45 minutes Henderson had played since he appeared for Liverpool four months ago as he continued his bid to return to full fitness before England face Croatia in their first group game next Sunday.

But all did not go to plan as he missed a penalty inside the final 15 minutes, with Romanian keeper Florin Nita denying him a first international goal.
Southgate chose the Reds skipper ahead of other midfielders in his provisional squad which included Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse and West Ham loanee Jesse Lingard.

Watch Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘worst free kick ever’ as Portugal captain mocked after Israel win ahead of Euro 2020

CRISTIANO RONALDO was mocked for the ‘worst free-kick’ of his entire career during Portugal’s friendly with Israel. The Juventus superstar was renowned for his set-piece taking, especially earlier in his career with Manchester United and Real Madrid.

But he woefully dropped his standards in Portugal’s final game before the delayed European Championships.
The legendary forward, 36, completed his iconic run up to the ball but riffled one right into the empty stands.
Ronaldo was ruthlessly slammed by fans online, who called for him to stop taking free-kicks all together.
One tweeted: “Who has video of that Ronaldo free kick? That’s the worst free kick I’ve ever seen him take.”
Another commented: “Why does he continue to take them?”
One posted: “He really needs to let go of the free kick duties now.”
Another wrote: “He shouldn’t be allowed to take free-kicks once the crowd returns. It’s too dangerous. The ball can literally hit anyone.”

The failed free-kick mattered little, as Ronaldo was on the scoresheet in the 4-0 win, with Bruno Fernandes scoring twice.
Manchester City’s Juan Cancelo also grabbed a goal giving Portugal a boost going into the Euros.
They have a what many consider ‘The Group of Death’ with fixtures against France, Germany and Hungary.
Portugal open against Hungary and their manager Fernando Santos admitted his side must improve before next Tuesday’s clash.
He told RTP: “In the second I changed things a little, I tried to put one more man next to Ronaldo and two midfielders coming in from the inside, but it didn’t work.
“We started to miss a lot of passes and the ball circulation was not so good. There are many things to improve, certainly.
“Now lets rest and calmly prepare for the Euros. This team has a huge will and an excellent team spirit.”
