Does Euro 2020 have third-fourth place playoff in the group stages?

THE Euros has been designed to keep as many teams in the tournament as possible and the excitement flowing. And after last year’s delay, it’s finally going to go ahead.

According to reports, Euros matches at Wembley are likely to be at full capacity.
Wembley could be a full house for when England meet Scotland in the group stages on 18 June.
Does Euro 2020 have a third-fourth place playoff in the group stages?
No. Euro 2020 does not have a third-fourth place playoff in the group stages of the competition.
And this is largely due to the procedures Uefa follow in order to rank teams as the group stages progress.
All of the qualified 24 teams are split up into six groups of four, and the top two qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament.
Four of the best 3rd placed teams will join them in the next stage as well.
However, in the event of two or more teams finishing level on points, goal difference will decide who finishes higher up in the table.
And if goal difference cannot separate the two or more sides, Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams will decide.

England Euro 2020 squad could still be CHANGED with Southgate having option to axe stars from 26-man side before Croatia

GARETH SOUTHGATE can change his final 26-man Euro 2020 squad right up until the first game against Croatia. That could mean a reprieve for the stars who have missed out such as James Ward-Prowse and Jesse Lingard.

Bosses had to submit their full selections by June 1.
However, Uefa rules permit unlimited changes ‘in the event of serious injury or illness before the first match’.
That includes players who test positive for coronavirus.
And it means Southgate has the option to make adjustments right up until Sunday lunchtime when his side open their campaign.
Harry Maguire, Jordan Henderson and Bukayo Saka have all struggled for fitness in the build-up to the tournament.
All three look sure to be fit at some stage, albeit Maguire and Henderson are doubts to face Croatia at Wembley on Sunday.
As revealed by SunSport, the Manchester United skipper will miss the group game against Scotland as well.
But should Southgate feel their injuries are too disruptive and they will not be ready to play their part, he may turn to some of the players axed from the 33-man provisional Three Lions squad.

Ward-Prowse and Lingard were deemed among the most unfortunate to miss out with Ben Godfrey, Aaron Ramsdale and Ollie Watkins also omitted.
Replacements brought in must be medically certified and once a player has been taken out of the 26, they cannot be re-added – such as crocked Trent Alexander-Arnold who was taken out for Ben White.
Should a goalkeeper get injured during the tournament, another stopper can take their place.
It is highly unlikely Southgate will exercise this option, though.
Despite 26-man squads, managers can still only name 23 players for a Euro 2020 matchday squad, including three goalkeepers.
Five substitutes are permitted from the 12 on the bench.

Euros 2020 – England star Kieran Trippier’s dad confident England will win Euros and calls for him to be next captain

KIERAN Trippier’s proud dad is confident England will win the Euros – and is calling for his son to become the next Three Lions captain. The Atletico Madrid star, 30, will have all eyes on him during the tournament as Premier League clubs line up to bring the full-back home.

But no one will be watching Trippier as closely as his dad Chris, who is hoping his son can repeat his heroics after scoring in the World Cup semi-final in 2018.
Chris, from Bury, Greater Manchester, has already spoken to his son from the England training camp and wished him well.
And he believes football could finally come home this summer as Gareth Southgate’s men prepare for their first game on Sunday.
He told The Sun Online: “I am very confident England will do very well and hopefully win it.
“I see an England/France final with us winning.”

Hod carrier Chris is rooting for Kieran for more reasons than one – claiming the star should become the next captain if Harry Kane hangs up the armband.
And he said he wasn’t surprised to see his son’s name appear in Southgate’s 26-man squad.
Chris added: “I was confident as Gareth seems to like him.
“In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if he in next in line for the captain’s armband after Harry Kane.
“And I have no worries about there being so many full-backs as they can all play in different positions.”
Trippier is currently at the centre of transfer market speculation with Man Utd hoping to sign the ex-Spurs star.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be eager to strengthen his options at right-back – potentially moving Aaron Wan-Bissaka to a different position.

Trippier helped Atletico bag the La Liga title in May after joining the Spanish club from Tottenham in 2019 for around £20million.
The Bury-native grew up as a Utd fan despite playing for rivals City as a schoolboy.
But with an opening £10million bid rejected by the top-flight Spanish team, Trippier might not be returning home any time soon.

Scotland confirm they WILL take a knee for England Euro 2020 clash at Wembley in fight against discrimination

SCOTLAND players will take the knee in solidarity with their England counterparts when they play at Wembley in Euro 2020.The Scots had stated on Thursday that they would continue standing in solidarity against racism during the tournament but the reaction has prompted a partial rethink 24 hours later.
Scotland boss Steve Clarke had talks with his captain Andy Robertson on taking the kneeCredit: PA
England players will be joined by Scotland in taking the knee before their Euros clashCredit: Getty
Scotland will still stand before their Hampden Park games but make an exception for their Auld Enemy encounter in London on June 18 as a gesture of togetherness with their opponents,
Gareth Southgate’s troops were booed by some of their own fans when they kneeled ahead of two warm-up games at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough.
But Scotland head coach Steve Clarke has revealed his side will now kneel beside them a week today.
He said: “In light of divisive and inaccurate comments being perpetuated by individuals and groups, whose views we denounce in the strongest terms, we have reflected today as a group.
“We remain committed to our principles of taking a stand but we must also be unequivocal in condemning the opportunistic false narrative being presented by some.
“We have therefore agreed that we will show solidarity with our counterparts in England, many of whom are team-mates of our own players, and who have found themselves on the receiving end of abuse from fans in recent international matches.
“We will continue to take a stand – together, as one – for our matches at Hampden Park.
“For our match at Wembley, we will stand against racism and kneel against ignorance.”
Clarke added that Scotland had begun standing for their opening World Cup qualifiers in March.

England continue to take a stance against racism and inequalityCredit: AP

Days earlier Motherwell and Dundee United switched from taking the knee to standing in a bid to revive the anti-racist message.
The following day both Celtic and Rangers players stood in solidarity with Ibrox midfielder Glen Kamara after he was racially abused by Slavia Prague player Ondrej Kudela, whose ten-game Uefa ban rules him out of the Czech Republic’s clash with Scotland on Monday.
Clarke said: “I explained in March the rationale behind the squad decision.
“Not only is it consistent with the collective approach from Scottish football above but the purpose of taking the knee, to raise awareness and help eradicate racism in football and society, has been diluted and undermined by the continuation of abuse towards players.
“For the avoidance of doubt: me, my coaching staff, my players and my backroom team take a stand against racism and all forms of unacceptable and discriminatory behaviour across society.
“We do so to raise awareness of the ongoing problem but also as a reminder to those who have the ultimate power and responsibility to implement meaningful change.”
Skipper Andy Robertson stressed that the squad’s reasoning was to keep the focus on meaningful change to fight discrimination in football and society.

The Liverpool star said: “In Scotland, the football family has stood against racism all season.
“It was our collective view that the national team would do the same.
“Our stance is that everyone, players, fans, teams, clubs, federations, governing bodies and governments must do more. Meaningful action is needed if meaningful change is to occur.
“But it is also clear, given the events around the England national team, taking the knee in this tournament matters as a symbol of solidarity.
“For this reason, we have collectively decided to again take the knee as a team for the fixture against England at Wembley Stadium.
“The Scotland team stands against racism but we will kneel against ignorance and in solidarity on June 18.”
Croatia are again expected to stand while England take the knee
Meanwhile England’s other Group D opponents Croatia will NOT take the knee when they face each other.
Croatia also did not take the knee for their final friendly ahead of this year’s tournament against Belgium.
And the Czech Republic are yet to confirm whether they will or not. They opted instead to point at the ‘Respect’ logo on their shirts before a game against Wales in March.
