Sterling insists ‘there are a lot of different reasons’ why he hasn’t been scoring for Man City after Euro 2020 heroics

ENGLAND matchwinner Raheem Sterling has insisted that there are ‘a lot of reasons’ for his Manchester City rut after netting at Euro 2020.A number of Three Lions fans wanted to see Jack Grealish start ahead of the 26-year-old for the Wembley clash against Croatia.

Having scored just once in his previous 16 appearances for his club, Sterling did not come into the tournament on good form.
Yet he repaid Gareth Southgate’s faith by calmly netting the winner after a fine through ball from Kalvin Phillips.
Speaking post-game to BBC Sport, the winger stated: “It feels good to score.
“I always said if I played at Wembley at a major tournament I had to score and it’s great to finally do that.
“There’s a lot of different reasons why I haven’t scored for my club and it’s totally irrelevant now.
“I’m here with England and I’m enjoying my football.
    “That’s the most important thing.”
Sterling’s scoring form for his club is in stark contrast to his consistent production for England.

In his last 17 internationals, he has been directly involved in 19 goals with 13 strikes and six assists.
And the Three Lions have not lost any of the past 11 games he has scored in.
Sterling is expected to get the nod to start against Scotland on Friday and a strong Euros could reinvigorate his City career.
I know what I can bring to the team and it’s as simple as that.Raheem Sterling

SunSport revealed earlier this month that Arsenal were tracking the ex-Liverpool talent, with Pep Guardiola chasing Tottenham’s Harry Kane.
Sterling noted: “I think one of the things about playing football and being in major tournaments for a long time now is knowing when to block the noise out.
“I just tried to focus and come into this tournament with a clear head. I know what I can bring to the team and it’s as simple as that.”

Austria 3 North Macedonia 1: Ex-West Ham star Arnautovic has to be restrained by Alaba in wild celebrations

MARKO ARNAUTOVIC had to be restrained by skipper David Alaba as he blasted Austria to their first Euros win.The former West Ham forward was trying to prove a point to boss Franco Foda after he was left on the bench despite declaring himself fit for the match.

His 89th-minute strike was met with him mouthing off to the camera as he pointed to his previously injured thigh – which ruled him out of the friendly against England last week.
It led Alaba to grab him by the chops to calm him down, but the Austrian skipper revealed he was just relieved to start the tournament with a win.
He said: “We’re very happy because we wanted to win this first game, we wanted to start well in this tournament.
“In 2016 we didn’t start well. We have a really good squad with a lot of potential. You could see it today with two guys who came off the bench and scored so that was very important for us.”
Stefan Lainer expertly volleyed Austria into an 18th-minute lead, and then paid tribute to stricken Denmark star Christian Eriksen.
The former Spurs star suffered a cardiac arrest during his country’s 1-0 defeat to Finland.
But veteran striker Goran Pandev capitalised on some horrific defending from Austria to bring the minnows level.
Austria tried to step things up in the second period, and a wonderful ball from Marcel Sabitzer was finished off by Gregoritsch.

He too held up a shirt in tribute to Eriksen.
The points were secured when substitute and former West Ham man Marko Arnautovic slotted home number three.
But it was not plain sailing for the Austrians.
After reaching the Euros by beating Georgia in the playoffs following Nations League success, some would assume the North Macedonians were just happy to be here.

Beating them twice in qualifying, including a 4-1 thrashing, the pressure was on Austria to deliver.
But Macedonian boss Igor Angelovski has built a well-organised outfit who have gone from 132nd to 62nd in the world rankings since he took charge in 2015.
His best bit of business though was convincing Pandev to come out of international retirement.
With the scalps of four-time World Cup winners Germany already under their belts from a 2-1 victory in March, they were always likely to cause an upset.
And boy did they roll up their sleeves and give it a go.
Goran Pandev looks to the heaven after bringing North Macedonia levelCredit: AFP
Being their first ever appearance at a major tournament since their independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991, it was no surprise all 11 Macedonians on the pitch were full of energy.
They found themselves in the right areas but could not find the quality to whip up any real danger.
And Austria made them pay as Lainer sneaked in behind to volley home a perfectly flighted ball by RB Leipzig maverick Sabitzer.
He celebrated by holding up a shirt saying “Eriksen stay strong” as the footballing world continues to show their support for the Denmark midfielder.
Yet, his sublime finish would come undone when a defensive mix up gave veteran Pandev his moment to become the second oldest goalscorer at the Euros in the 28th minute.
Arnautovic had a somewhat bizarre celebration after scoringCredit: Reuters
Leeds star Ezgjan Alioski’s cross ricocheted off two defenders and found its way into the box which left Real Madrid newbie David Alaba shielding the ball for keeper Daniel Bachmann to collect.
But the Watford stopper’s spill allowed the 37-year-old Pandev to roll in his 38th national goal on his 120th cap into an empty net.
It was all he needed after building a career of being at the right place at the right time as he once won the treble under Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan.
Sub Gregoritsch spoiled any hopes of Macedonia recreating the heroics seen by Iceland in 2016 by stabbing home Alba’s cross 12 minutes from time before Arnautovic added the extras late on.

Watch Pandev, 37, score for North Macedonia as Austria ridiculed for ‘comedy’ defending in Euro 2020 opener

GORAN PANDEV scored North Macedonia’s first ever goal at a major tournament thanks to a comedy of errors from Austria. The veteran striker, 37, capitalised on an error from goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann to cancel out Stefan Lainer’s opener to draw his country level.

Goran Pandev, 37, scored North Macedonia’s first ever goal at a major tournamentCredit: AFP
First, Martin Hinteregger’s attempted clearance smacked Marcel Sabitzer in the face and rebounded kindly into the path of Aleksandar Trajkovski.
Austrian keeper Bachmann raced out to win the ball but he also made a mess of the save – with the ball landing at the feet of Pandev.
The North Macedonian striker was then given the simplest of tasks in finishing into an empty net despite the efforts of David Alaba.
And fans on social media were quick to poke fun at the comical defending, with one tweeting: “Can anyone add the Benny Hills theme song to this?”
Another said: “Pandev with a proper FIFA break your controller type goal!”
A third added: “This goal is a mess but I am here for it.”
Pandev, aged 37 years and 321 days, became the second-oldest player ever to score at the Euros after Austria’s Ivica Vastic (38 years, 257 days) netted in 2008 against Poland.
North Macedonia ultimately slipped to a 3-1 defeat but before the game, he claimed that his country could be the surprise package this summer.

Pandev said: “It means a lot, it is an immense source of pride for us, because until recently it was unthinkable that a national team like North Macedonia could participate in such an important competition.
“We, on the other hand, have always believed in it. This generation made history.
“We have had other strong players in the past, but only we have managed to accomplish this feat. Nobody will ever be able to take this away from us.
“Our ambitions are great, we hope to do well and win a few games. “The goal is to pass at least the group stage.
“We know it will not be easy, but we are also aware of our strength so we will try to do this too.”

Speaking to BBC Sport after the match, Lampard said: “I would not worry about Harry Kane, he is our man.
“Save one today, the team played really well, there will be a really positive feel about the group.
“Harry Kane will deliver when it comes.”
The 27-year-old had a decent game against Croatia but failed to match the performances of goalscorer Raheem Sterling and midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
And fellow BBC pundit Alan Shearer was slightly concerned with Kane’s sharpness, particularly when he failed to get on the end of a goal-mouth cross in the second half.
The ex-Newcastle forward said: “He looked a little bit slow, that ball that came across I was expecting him to put it away… other than Harry Kane everyone looked really sharp.”

Kane’s slow start to the tournament shouldn’t concern Southgate just yet, especially after a win against the 2018 World Cup finalists.
The England manager will be hoping his star striker can deliver against Scotland on Friday, June 18.
The Tottenham forward was in stunning form last season, scoring 23 Premier League goals and setting up another 14 to claim both the Golden Boot and Playmaker awards.
But there is huge speculation surrounding his future as it is understood he wants to leave the North London club in a bid to win his first major honour at club level.
Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea have all been linked with Kane in recent weeks, although the bookies currently believe he will stay at Spurs beyond the summer.

Jose Mourinho reveals he cried when Christian Eriksen collapsed on pitch and prayed for ex-Tottenham star

JOSE MOURINHO has spoken of his terror at seeing Christian Eriksen suffer a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020.The Denmark star, 29, collapsed during Saturday’s game with Finland and required CPR on the pitch in Copenhagen.

Fans, players and Eriksen’s family desperately awaited further news before it was confirmed that he was awake and in a stable condition.
And Mourinho, who coached the midfielder for two months at Tottenham, has revealed his shocked reaction to the incident.
The 58-year-old told talkSPORT: “Today I cannot stop thinking about what happened yesterday. I think it’s a day to celebrate, not to be sad.
“Hopefully football went in a direction where the organisation, the protocols the level of the doctors and the specialists, and I also believe God was looking at football in that moment.
“Everything together made Christian to be with us, to be with his family, to be alive.
“It was much more important than football but at the same time I believe that it also showed the good values of football.
I prayed, I cried, but how many millions did it around the world? I believe many because football can bring people together.Jose Mourinho
“The love, the solidarity, family spirit. It was not just about his family it was about the football family. Football bringing people together.
“I prayed yesterday, I cried yesterday, but how many millions did it around the world? I believe many because football can bring people together.”
Mourinho took over at Tottenham in November 2019, after Eriksen had revealed his desire to quit the club ahead of his contract expiring.
And the player later revealed the dignity he had been treated with by the Portuguese coach.
Eriksen said in February of last year: “After I told him where my feelings were and what I would like to do, he told me just to be happy and if I was needed I would play.”
After a couple of months under Mourinho, he completed a move to Inter Milan and won the 2020-21 Serie A title.
The ex-Chelsea and Manchester United boss had hoped to go head to head with Eriksen and the Nerazzurri next season once he takes over at Roma.
But he instead reflected on Eriksen’s health having contacted Spurs star Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for an update.

Mourinho continued: “Yesterday, for the wrong reasons football brought people together, at the end we can celebrate Christian is alive.
“Of course, I didn’t speak with him but I spoke with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this morning and Pierre is very positive about Christian.
“The news is good, so I think it’s a moment to celebrate.”

England last hosted a major tournament 25 years ago for Euro 1996 – one Gareth Southgate will definitely want to forget after missing a crucial penalty in the semi-finals.
But his young team being led out under Wembley’s arch combined with a 30C heatwave has put a smile on the nation’s faces after a devastating 15 months.
A year-long delay to the tournament due to Covid also means excitement simmering under the surface has now exploded across the country.
Fans have been urged to rally behind the troops, give Covid the middle finger and finally allow hope to cut through the bleakness of the pandemic.

The virus has dampened the tournament – with just 22,500 fans allowed in for the match – but they still roared loudly enough for the missing supporters.
An official fan zone set up in London’s Trafalgar Square was attended by 750 key workers invited to to watch the match on a big screen.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said the excitement of the Euros was needed after “the darkness and trauma” of the pandemic.
Speaking at the official fan zone, he added: “We’ve invited our amazing key workers to thank them for all they’ve done for our city.

“They’ve gone above and beyond over the last 18 months … this is our way to thank them.
“You can tell how excited I am I’m one of the first people here … bring it home. It’ll be nice to see people face to face, facial expressions, body language.
“The best thing about football is that it brings people together.”
Addressing the England team directly, he said: “To Gareth (Southgate) and the entire England squad, London is behind you. Bring it home.”

Other fans flooded Box Park in Croydon and Wembley to watch Our Boys throughout the tournament.

Fans will also down a whopping 50million pints and eat their way through 30million burgers and 20million sausages.

    ERIKSEN UPDATE
The whole world watched in shock yesterday as Inter Milan star Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland.
Medics managed to resuscitate Eriksen, who was stretchered out of the arena to the hospital and his condition has been “stable” ever since.
Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen confirmed the former Tottenham star suffered cardiac arrest and “was gone”.
Boesen said: “Yeah, he was gone and we did cardiac resuscitation.
“It was cardiac arrest, how close were we? I don’t know.

    STILL GOR-ING ON
No player has ever been more successful that Genoa star Goran Pandev throughout North Macedonia’s history.
Pandev has enjoyed a glittering 21-year career, which has seen him play for the likes of Galatasaray, Napoli, Lazio and Inter Milan.
In fact, the popular striker was part of Jose Mourinho’s star-studded Inter side that won a historic treble, which included the 2010 Champions League title.
And of course, the 37-year-old is North Macedonia’s record scorer with 30 goals in 111 appearances, which also makes him the nation’s most capped player ever

    NORTH MACEDONIA STATS
Euro 2020 marks the first ever major international competition in which North Macedonia have ever qualified.
Igor Angelovski’s men made it to the European championships after winning their play-off final against Georgia 1-0 thanks to Goran Pandev’s winner.
North Macedonia have been on quite a roll as they have been undefeated in their last four outings, winning a staggering three along the way.
One of them included a famous 2-1 victory over Germany in Duisburg last March in the World Cup qualifying round with goals by Pandev and Elif Elmas

    AUSTRIA STATS
Austria are still looking for their first ever win in the European championships after two failed attempts in 2008 and 2016.
The Austrians qualified for Euro 2020 after finishing second in Group G behind table-toppers Poland, with just five points ahead of North Macedonia.
But Franco Foda’s men are in desperate need to improve their form as they failed to score or win any of their last three international games, losing twice in the process.

    HEAD-TO-HEAD
This will be the third time Austria and North Macedonia cross paths in the last two years as they faced off in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.
The Austrians won both fixtures against Igor Angelovski’s men and thus pose as favourites to gain the first three points of Group C.
Austria won 4-1 in Skopje with a goal by Valentino Lazaro, an own goal by Egzon Bejtulai and a brace by Marko Arnautovic – all of which cancelled out Martin Hinteregger’s oggie.
Franco Foda’s men also won the return fixture in Vienna with a score of 2-1 after David Alaba and Stefan Lainer hit the target before Vlatko Stojanovski’s consolation goal

    GOOD EVENING FROM BUCHAREST
Welcome to our live coverage of the Euro 2020 group stage match between Austria and North Macedonia at the National Arena.
This marks the first match of Group C where both competitors have also been drawn with the Netherlands as well as Ukraine, who play later on tonight.
Austria manager Franco Foda has received a significant injury boost as captain Julian Baumgartlinger, Marko Arnautovic and Christoph Baumgartner are all available for selection.
Bayer Leverkusen ace Baumgartlinger recently dealt with a cruciate ligament injury and Hoffenheim’s Baumgartner seems to have recovered from an ankle problem.
Former West Ham star Arnautovic recently overcame a thigh strain but is unlikely to start ahead of Stuttgart striker Sasa Kalajdzic.
Manager Foda will have to decide whether he will start Real Madrid signing David Alaba in defence or midfield, with the latter scenario gathering more pace.
North Macedonia manager Igor Angelovski, on the other hand, is not dealing with any injury concerns ahead of this historic match for his national team.
Leeds ace Ezgjan Alioski is set to start as a left wing-back whereas Napoli’s Elif Elmas could feature in midfield close to the former.
Genoa star, and national hero, Goran Pandev is expected to lead the line, but he will probably not be alone as Mallorca striker Aleksandar Trajkovski may join the former Inter Milan and Lazio forward up front
