Jordan Henderson faces real fight to win back England Euro 2020 place after Kalvin Phillips’ outstanding game vs Croatia

KALVIN PHILLIPS became the first Leeds player to assist a goal at Wembley since David Batty in 1999.A pass for Steve McMananman in a 6-0 win over Luxembourg was never going to live long in anyone’s memory.

But the whole of Yorkshire — along with the rest of the country — raised a glass to a moment of pure class from Phillips to create Raheem Sterling’s match-winning goal.
Hopefully, this particular assist will be remembered as the moment which started England off on their journey to an exciting, successful Euro 2020.
After the 1-0 win over Croatia, ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’ was trending on twitter. And the subject was certainly not Batty.
Phillips, 25, also Leeds-born, was making only his ninth international appearance but he looked like a player accustomed to a major summer tournament every couple of years.
It was not just the close control and clever nudge of the ball which finally unlocked the Croatian’s defence.
Here was an outstanding performance from Phillips. He was energetic off the ball, dynamic in possession and he worked perfectly with Mason Mount but in particular, Declan Rice.
Sterling landed the Uefa match-of-the match award but it should have gone to Phillips. And to think many fans were concerned about Phillips’ inclusion in the starting XI.
    Jordan who?

Phillips said: “It was very enjoyable. It is great to get an assist and a great feeling for the three points.
“It was really warm and it took its toll towards the end of the game. It was a great result but I know there are two more group games left and we have to be as good as that if not better.”
Delighted boss Gareth Southgate said: “Kalvin is a fabulous boy to work with, so unassuming. I thought his performance was outstanding.
“Two passes in the first-half in behind the defence were top level and his contribution for the goal summed his day up, really.
“I think we know we are asking him to play in a slightly advanced position from the one he plays at his club. But he’s got the technique to be able to do that.
“It gives us a bit more solidity in midfield and allows us to effectively play four attacking players, with Mason in midfield as well.”
Croatia’s midfield, crammed with quality, was a reason Southgate played with a back four and central three. Under normal circumstances, Jordan Henderson would have been running the midfield engine room alongside Rice.
While the Liverpool’s captain’s vast experience will be missed, Phillips — who has improved immeasurably under boss Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds — proved he can more than fill that role.
Kalvin Phillips was one of the stars of the show as England beat Croatia
Henderson, who underwent a groin operation in February, looked incredibly rusty in his 45-minute cameo in last week’s friendly against Romania.
Realistically, he will not be match-fit until the knockout stages.
Yet he faces a real fight to get his place back if Phillips keeps delivering composed performances like this.
Phillips was the only player on either side to complete all of his passes in the first half at Wembley (18/18), while no player completed more long passes than him (3).
And in the key moment of the game, he received a decent ball from Kyle Walker and skipped past the outstretched leg of Duje Ćaleta-Car before teeing up the killer pass for Sterling.
Phillips only made his debut in the 0-0 draw with Denmark last September, the same night Jack Grealish got his first cap.
There has been much anticipation of Grealish making an impact at the Euros and this could still happen.
But the first relative newcomer to grab his chance is Phillips — and 65-year-old Argentine Bielsa could surely have not been any prouder.
Southgate added: “To be able to work with the coach that he has at Leeds and to have a season of playing in the Premier League will have given him tremendous confidence coming into this tournament.
“All the attributes were there: the range of passing, the athleticism, the desire. For us he’s just a very good footballer — high performance, low maintenance. We like that a lot.”

The incident had haunting echoes of Muamba’s own fight for life after collapsing while playing for Bolton against Tottenham in 2012.
Muamba, forced to retire, tweeted: “This makes you realise how fragile life is and how quickly you can lose a loved one.
“Like everyone, I am relieved to hear Christian is in a stable condition and that he is doing ok.
“Credit of course must go to the brilliant medical staff who got to him so quickly and did an amazing job to make sure he was ok.
“His team-mates who rallied around him also did a great job and should be really proud.
“The most important thing and number one priority for us all is to give Christian and his family space and time to heal and recover.”
On a personal note I am just happy he has been able to speak to people.Fabrice Muamba

And the urgent attention Eriksen received is likely to have been vital in his treatment.
He continued: “On a personal note I am just happy he has been able to speak to people.
“We also need to make sure his wife and children have support because mentally it can be really traumatic for them as well.”

Why was Clive Tyldesley bumped off ITV’s prime commentary slot?

CLIVE TYLDESLEY, known as the voice of England football, was axed from his position as ITV’s Prime commentator last July after 22 years in the role. The 66-year-old spoke to the biggest ever British audience for a single game when the Three Lions lost to Croatia in the 2018 World Cup semi-final in front of 24.3million viewers.

Why was Clive Tyldesley bumped from his role?
The Radcliffe born broadcaster’s voice has provided the backdrop to many memorable Champions League nights, as well as World Cups, European Championships, England friendlies and FA Cups.
Although ITV have stood Tyldesley down from his previous role, he will still be in the commentary box in a supporting role for Euro 2020.
According to the Daily Mail, Tyldesley and ITV mutually agreed more than two years ago that his role would change at some point in 2020, because the broadcaster felt that this would be the right moment for a new leading voice.
The move away from ITV allowed Tyldesley to work for rival broadcasters throughout the 20/21 season including Amazon Prime Video.
Sam Matterface was in-turn announced as ITV’s new principal figure in place of Tyldesley for any future England games.
Tyldesley will be commentating for ITV at the Euro Championship
Tyldesley claimed he considered “storming out” of his meeting with ITV bosses after he was presented with the news.
However, after a change of heart, he realised he would still be able to cover top-tier matches and continue to fulfil his passion.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, he said: “I could have stormed out, but I thought, no I quite fancy commentating on France versus Italy.
“No more England, so it will be a slightly strange thing.
“Once the decision has been taken you have to absorb it, realise it’s not the end of the world. It’s nice if you’re missed a little bit.”
Tyldesley also opened up on his replacement, Matterface, insisting he holds no bad ties with his 43-year-old replacement.
He added: “I don’t think ITV replaced me with a younger man for the sake of that, I think they replaced me with a different kind of commentator.
“And even though I was shocked by the decision and didn’t agree with it, I can accept it, because Sam commentates in a different way.
“But when I hear that somebody as capable as Mark Pougatch has been replaced on the BBC by somebody who has got a younger voice, but broadcasts in the same way, only not as well, I can’t fathom that out at all. More

    FAN REACTION TO ARNAUTOVIC
Premier League fans found Austria star Marko Arnautovic’s angry celebration quite entertaining and even demanded his return to English football.
One tweeted: “Arnautovic celebrating a goal by nearly fighting his team-mates, that’s why he’s in my fantasy team.”
Another wrote: “Marko Arnautovic coming off the bench, rounding the goalkeeper and scoring the third goal, all while looking absolutely furious in the process. Bring this man back to the Barclays.”

It also proved to be quite a special finish that will leave in history:
37 – Aged 37 years and 321 days, North Macedonia’s Goran Pandev is the second-oldest player ever to score at the EUROs, after Austria’s Ivica Vastic (38 years 257 days) vs Poland in 2008. Golden. #EURO2020 pic.twitter.com/OsuGlza92X— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) June 13, 2021
