I hope England and Croatia go far – but I can’t cope with both in the final

THANK God, or hvala Bogu, that’s out the way.The best team won, but no one’s heartbroken; no one’s been humiliated. I’d have settled for that.

Watching England play Croatia yesterday, my heart was as split as the light and dark areas of the Wembley pitchCredit: Getty
From the anthems to the final whistle, it was an hour and a half of hell during which my heart was as split as the light and dark areas of the Wembley pitch.
Early on the commentary said: “Croatia are all over the place.” Quite right, but it still enraged me; it felt like he was criticising my mum.
Then Croatia improved, which was a relief but only led me to start feeling bad for England.
I looked at Tyrone Mings playing so well and wondered how I could possibly have wanted anything other than for him to be on the winning side.
In the interview I did for The Sun with Tony Adams, Tony said how much he rated him.
Tyrone Mings played so well, I was convinced I was just on his sideCredit: Getty
I shared this with Tyrone by text and he responded immediately, saying how appreciative he was.
“I’m just an England fan, but actually playing,” he added, evidently still pinching himself. Well played, my man.
Croatia can at least console themselves that they won the fans’ beauty contest hands-down.
Every shot of England fans seemed to feature pale, shirtless blokes leaping about, bellies a-wobbling.
Croatia’s fans seemed, as usual, to be mainly female supermodels.
I’ve made enquiries in the past as to whether agencies are flying them in especially from Zagreb or Split, but this has always been denied. Loving their work, anyway.
Just like his shirt, Adrian is half-English, half-Croatian

And I’m loving the thought that I can now go crazy for two different teams in at least four more games.
Hopefully they’ll both go further than that, but please not both of them as far as the final.
    That would finish me off.

Raheem Sterling gets England off to winning start with goal in his ‘back garden’

HOTSHOT Raheem Sterling got England off to a winning start at the Euros yesterday — scoring a goal just a stone’s throw from where he grew up.The Manchester City star gave “football’s coming home” a meaning of his own as he netted at Wembley — the area where he was raised.

Raheem netted the winning goal at Wembley – the area he was raised in
Raheem, who was awarded the MBE two days earlier for services to racial equality in sport, was the only scorer as England beat Croatia 1-0 in front of thrilled fans.
It was the Three Lions’ first opening game triumph in a Euro tournament in 53 years and sent them roaring into Friday’s crunch clash with Scotland.
Raheem, 26, lived in Neeld Crescent in the shadow of the stadium in the North West London borough of Brent.
As a kid he dreamed of football glory as he gazed up at its iconic arch being built.
Before yesterday’s match he posted a picture of himself as a boy clutching a trophy with the words: “Never forget where it started. #boyfromBrent.”
England’s glory overshadowed a moment of controversy before kick-off when their players took the knee in an anti-racism gesture.
Some fans booed but they were drowned out by massive cheers for Gareth Southgate’s team.
He paid tribute to his boyhood dream with this throwback snap

Last night Raheem said: “It’s a great feeling for me playing at Wembley, not far from where I grew up as a young boy and seeing the stadium being built.
“I’ve always said, if I played at Wembley in a major tournament I’m scoring at Wembley, in my back garden. I said I have to score — and it’s great to finally do that.”
A noisy Covid-reduced 22,500- strong crowd watched the tight match in blistering 30C heat.

They — and millions watching on TV — erupted in celebration early in the second half when Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips sent an inch- perfect pass through for Sterling to blast home.
Some people had queued outside pubs and restaurants from 7am to bag their spots for the 2pm kick-off — with table service still in force.
Harry Leach, who waited outside The Distillery, in Birmingham, said:: “When I started queuing there were already 120 people in front of me and I would say about 120 behind.
“Everyone was excited, they were all singing England chants.”

Millions of others gathered in homes, gardens and fan zones.
Huge screens were put up in Trafalgar Square.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who was hosting key workers as a “thank you”, said the excitement of the Euros was needed after “the darkness and trauma” of the pandemic.
James Wright, 43, of Great Cornard, Suffolk, who was at Wembley, said: “The atmosphere was electric. When that goal went in you would have had no idea Wembley was three quarters empty and full of fans in masks. It was deafening.”
Boris Johnson, at a press conference at the end of the G7 summit in Cornwall, sidestepped calls to condemn fans who booed. He said: “Everybody should cheer for England”.
The PM tweeted congratulations on the team’s “fantastic start”.
England boss Southgate said: “It’s lovely to have given our fans and our country a really enjoyable afternoon.”

Skipper Harry Kane said: “Massive performance to start the Euros with a win in the sun at Wembley. Raheem Sterling on fire — perfect.”
The result was payback after Croatia beat England in the World Cup semi-final in 2018.
Richard Wilson, 60, watching in Teddington, West London, said: “What a start — just what the country needs.”

According to The Mirror, Atletico will not let Trippier leave the Spanish capital unless a potential suitor bids £30m.
Reports claim United have offered £10m for the ex-Tottenham defender – around half of what Atletico paid for him two years ago.
The Old Trafford club are said to be willing to offer up to £20m for Trippier, who helped his current employers win LaLiga last season.
He’s also been linked with Arsenal, with rumours suggesting they may agree a swap deal with Atletico for Spanish defender Hector Bellerin.
But, as SunSport revealed earlier this month, Trippier is keen on a move to Manchester – telling his England colleagues he wants to join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team.
The 30-year-old is from nearby Bury and spent four seasons at Lancashire side Burnley before moving to Spurs in June 2015.

One United legend that isn’t in favour of signing the Manchester City academy graduate is Rio Ferdinand, who believes the club should keep their faith in current right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The Red Devils have been linked with a number of players in the last few days, with Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho believed to be top of their shortlist.
Another attacking threat they’re rumoured to be keen on is Bayern Munich star Kingsley Coman – and he is said to want out of the German club.
And there is speculation about a second Atletico player – Saul Niguez – with United, Chelsea, Bayern, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain all believed to be interested in the Spain international.

Euro 2020: England aces’ heart tests revealed after horror collapse which felled Christian Eriksen

ENGLAND’S stars all had cardiac screening tests to reduce the risk of the horror collapse which felled Christian Eriksen, it was revealed yesterday. The FA ordered thorough heart checks on the football aces leading the charge towards Euro 2020 glory.

They would not be allowed to play unless they had passed specialist electrocardiogram tests, checking for abnormalities, within the last year.
The players also had to have a detailed echocardiogram ultrasound scan within the last two years.
FA sources said it is now policy to regularly monitor England’s top men’s senior stars — and also England players across every age group.
    ‘NO CHANCES TAKEN’
Precautions and training were ramped up after the horror collapse of Bolton star Fabrice Muamba during an FA Cup match against Tottenham in 2012.
In addition, all England medical staff are now required to have an Advanced Trauma Medical Management In Football certificate.
That means all medics will be ready to act to save lives should a player suffer a collapse or serious injury.

He was taken off the pitch on a stretcher after 13 minutes of intense medical treatment
A source told The Sun: “All England medical staff also have the highest standard of medical equipment with them pitchside to quickly and efficiently manage incidents.
“They’re ready to react quickly and effectively should the worst kind of incident occur, both in a match and training scenarios.
“It’s an issue which is taken incredibly seriously in the light of what happened to both Fabrice and Christian. No chances are taken.”
Denmark’s team doctor Morten Boesen confirmed that Eriksen was “gone” before being revived. He said: “We did cardiac resuscitation, it was a cardiac arrest.
“When I got to him he was on his side, he was breathing, I could feel a pulse but suddenly that changed and we started to give him CPR.
“The help came really fast from the medical team and the rest of the staff with their co-operation, and we did what we had to do and managed to get Christian back. How close were we to losing him?
“I don’t know, but we got him back after one defibrillation so that’s quite fast. The examinations done so far look fine. We don’t have an explanation why it happened.”

Denmark head coach Kasper Hjulmand revealed Eriksen said: “I don’t remember much but I’m more concerned about you guys. How are you doing? I think you’re feeling worse than I am. I feel as if I’m about to go training now, boys.”
Hjulmand said: “That’s typical Christian. It was good to see him smile. Christian is in good spirits and it’s a huge relief for the players. We’ve been on the ropes.”
Former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, who coached Eriksen before the player left for Inter Milan, said: “I prayed yesterday, I cried yesterday. God was looking at football.”
Prior to England’s game against Croatia, fans at Wembley applauded Eriksen as the stadium announcer wished him a speedy recovery.
Skipper Harry Kane tweeted: “Chris. I’m sending all my love to you and your family. Stay strong mate.”
Meanwhile, the BBC removed footage of Eriksen’s collapse from its iPlayer yesterday as broadcasting regulator Ofcom prepared to launch a probe.
    Ref’s wife ‘proud’By Richard Moriarty
THE wife of the English ref at the centre of the Christian Eriksen health scare yesterday told of her pride at his actions.
Premier League ref Anthony Taylor was widely praised for his quick action in halting the game within three seconds of the ex-Spurs star collapsing during Saturday’s clash between Denmark and Finland.
Taylor, 42, born in Wythenshawe where Marcus Rashford also grew up, was congratulated by Prince William for “calm and swift action”.
And his wife Anne-Marie told The Sun: “I am very proud of him.”
Asked if he was upset by what happened, she said: “I have spoken to him. He is fine now. He is good.”

Hundreds of viewers complained after live footage of the frantic attempts to revive him was beamed into millions of homes.

Host Gary Lineker later apologised in a tweet.

Jude Bellingham celebrates historic Euro 2020 cap in tweet exchange with Oasis legend Liam Gallagher

JUDE BELLINGHAM capped a record-breaking day for England by celebrating on Twitter with Liam Gallagher. The Oasis legend, 48, had posted the phrase ‘Hey Jude’ just after watching the young midfielder make his Euro 2020 bow on Sunday.

And 17-year-old Bellingham sent back ‘Hey Liam’ in reply, much to the delight of his fans.
Manchester City devotee Gallagher had provided entertaining updates to his 3.5million followers throughout the clash with Croatia.
At half-time and with the game 0-0, he called for Sergio Aguero to be given a chance to score for the Three Lions and tweeted: “Get Sergio on.”
But Raheem Sterling’s winner earned ‘C’mon Raheem’ and ‘It’s coming home’ remarks from the singer.
Gallagher posted a cheeky selfie after the opener but was left furious at City starlet Phil Foden’s booking with the score at 1-0.
He tweeted: “That’s not a yellow you s*** house.”

On 82 minutes, Borussia Dortmund star Bellingham replaced Harry Kane to become the youngest player to ever appear at a European Championship.
What’s more, at 17 years and 349 days old, he is now also the youngest England international to play at a major tournament.
And he threw himself into the action, winning possession twice and touching the ball ten times in ten minutes.
Croatia were chasing the game throughout his runout yet Bellingham still produced four successful passes from five attempts.

Bellingham will hope to start in England’s game against Scotland on Friday but Kalvin Phillips’ star performance on Sunday should guarantee his place.
Manager Gareth Southgate said: “We are going to need all those attacking players through the tournament. We can make changes and we will need to.
“The key was to get pressure on Croatia’s midfield players and we managed to do that. That limited some of the supply and the defenders dealt with the longer balls well and read the game well.
“It was a day when everybody who got onto the pitch performed well and that was set up by the whole group.”

Speaking during punditry on ITV, Neville said: “I think we’ve got an outstanding international manager who’s got unbelievable experience.
“I thought he managed that game unbelievably today. You talk about who the best player was, it might be Kalvin Phillips or Raheem Sterling but our biggest asset is our manager.
“The clamour in the past would have been for Grealish and he didn’t even bring him off the bench.
“So, he’s willing to make the unpopular decisions, ones that some of us ultimately – at times – don’t think he should make because he knows that group better than anyone.
“He’s had seven or eight tournaments now, as a coach now, with the U21s, as a player.
“He’s vastly experienced and I feel really comfortable with him there – as an England fan – and what he did today was really good.”

Neville, who was Roy Hodgson’s assistant between 2012 and 2016, endured a difficult time with England as they failed at the 2014 World Cup and subsequent Euros.
That management team was initially replaced by Sam Allardyce – but he resigned after just one match following allegations of corruption in September 2016.
Former Under-21 coach Southgate became the caretaker boss and eventually got the top job two months later – arguably the FA’s best managerial appointment since Terry Venables in 1994.
The ex-Middlesbrough manager has guided England to the semi-finals of the World Cup and Nations League – and his team have started their Euros bid with a win.
England’s next opponents in Group D are Auld Enemy Scotland, who face Czech Republic at Hampden Park on Monday in their opening match of the tournament.

Adama Traore’s Barcelona academy experience was similar to Lionel Messi’s but his tactics left Karanka pulling hair out

ADAMA TRAORE was a rough diamond in 2016 when he joined Middlesbrough.Ex-Boro boss Aitor Karanka explains how he helped him become a key player for Spain.
Adama Traore has emerged as one of Spain’s most versatile and dangerous playersCredit: Getty
The Wolves star has transformed himself into one of Luis Enrique’s most useful assets
THE fact Adama Traore goes into these Euros as one of Spain’s most versatile and dangerous players shows how far he has come.
Because the idea of the stocky winger having the discipline to play wing-back when I first took him to Middlesbrough five years ago would have seemed impossible.
CASINO SIGN UP OFFER: GET £10 FREE BONUS WITH NO DEPOSIT REQUIRED
But this is a really humble kid who never stops wanting to learn and improve.
Sometimes you find very good players who think they have reached the top, yet Adama is the opposite.
Through that mentality he has transformed himself into one of Luis Enrique’s most useful assets — and he can get better because his potential is amazing.
Adama has always had the ability to conjure something out of nothing with his tremendous pace, power and dribbling skills.
That was what set him apart in Barcelona’s La Masia academy, where he had a similar experience to Lionel Messi — he would get the ball and score but did not need to defend.
Sometimes you find very good players who think they have reached the top, yet Adama is the oppositeAitor Karanka
When he came to us at Boro, he had had a difficult time at Aston Villa where he struggled to adapt to life in Birmingham and had troubles with injuries.
The first thing to do was create a relationship with him and then it was more about tactics and trying to fix the mistakes he was making.
I had to try to teach him the right movements and where he should be when we lost the ball, while being careful not to stop his ability going forward.
I spent a lot of time with him in my office with the tactics board working on things.
He was surprised because after a few meetings I didn’t say anything. I told him, ‘Look, I am tired because I’m always teaching you. Tell me where you should be’.
And he knew everything, he went to the board and explained it all. He knew what he should do — but he didn’t do it in the games.
I always had Adama next to me on the pitch and I would tell him what he should do.
Aitor Karanka claimed Traore had a similar experience to Lionel Messi in Barcelona’s academyCredit: Getty
Former Birmingham City manager Karanka was in charge of the speedster at MiddlesbroughCredit: JOHN CLIFTON
One day Victor Valdes and Alvaro Negredo came to my office and said, ‘Look gaffer, we are feeling that Adama is a little bit concerned because you are always behind him.
‘Can you give him freedom? Because you know sometimes he’s looking at you and we are losing his creativity.’
But it was part of the process for him. He improved more and then he started to take the right decisions.
Before, he would do amazing things and then he would lose the last pass or he would shoot when he didn’t need to.
As for his amazing physicality, he didn’t work on it because he likes his body but because he knew the work he did was helping him improve as a football player.
Adama continued to improve under Tony Pulis and then with Nuno Espirito Santo at Wolves, who helped him become so versatile.
Now he can play on the wing, in a front two and wing-back in a back five.
It makes him so important to Spain, whether they start him or use him as a weapon off the bench.
As for his amazing physicality, he didn’t work on it because he likes his body but because he knew the work he did was helping him improve as a football playerAitor Karanka
Adama is one of a new breed of Spanish players and Enrique is having to do things differently, because we don’t have the quality of the players we had a decade ago who played such wonderful, tiki-taka football.
We would have loved to have kept those players for another 30 years but it was impossible.
Now we have a young team and the preparation has not been easy following Sergio Busquets’ positive Covid test.
It may seem a surprise to those who do not follow LaLiga that there are no Real Madrid players in the squad.
But there were only ever five possible Real players who would have been included — Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal, Lucas Vazquez, Marco Asensio and Nacho, and the first three have struggled with injury.
It has been important to pick players in good form after such an exhausting season and in Villarreal’s Gerard Moreno, Spain have one to watch.
Moreno scored 30 goals this season, including against Manchester United in the Europa League final, and he’ll be important to the team.
Another player who can catch the eye is Barcelona’s 18-year-old midfielder Pedri, who has had a really good season.

You cannot forget experienced players like Koke either, while Enrique wanted to bring young players into defence like Eric Garcia.
Garcia’s inclusion has been a surprise in Spain but his experience in England at Manchester City is good for the team.
I don’t know if we are one of the favourites but Spain will be very competitive.
It will still be deemed as a failure at home if we do not win it, though, after our recent success!

But we need to put everything into perspective. Spain are going through a transition and that process needs time and understanding.
I am working for Uefa as an observer at the tournament, analysing games from a tactical perspective and choosing the man of the match.
It is important to always keep learning — as Adama always understood.
