Christian Eriksen’s collapse had major impact on Belgium dressing room, reveals close pal Romelu Lukaku after tribute

IT was the backdrop to Belgium’s win over Russia that made their opening performance in Group B all the more remarkable.Just five minutes after watching Christian Eriksen get carried off in Copenhagen, Roberto Martinez was supposed to conduct a pre-match briefing for their evening game.

The Belgian boss realised very quickly that this would be a worthless endeavour.
There were tears in the team room on Saturday, not least from talisman Romelu Lukaku who is close friends with Inter Milan team-mate Eriksen.
So much so that Lukaku admitted later he ‘spent more time with him than my own family’ during his time in Italy.
Lukaku said: “I cried a lot because I was scared, obviously.”
Equally shaken would have been defenders Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, who played alongside Eriksen at Ajax and Tottenham.
Both were starters in Saint Petersburg, but their thoughts at that moment were very much in Copenhagen.
Spaniard Martinez said: “We were watching it live, then in the next five minutes were going to our team meeting.
“You can imagine that the last thing we wanted to speak about was football.
“There was a real shock – a real sadness.
“There were tears. We have got a lot of team-mates in our dressing room who have shared big moments with Christian.
“From Thomas Vermaelen to Toby Alderweireld to Jan Vertonghen and now currently Romelu Lukaku.
“We then all got better news about his recovery and our thoughts are with Christian.”

Indeed, it was that more encouraging news prior to kick-off that perhaps allowed the world’s top-ranked team to refocus on the job in hand.
What a performance they put on, too. Not least by Lukaku, who was determined not only to score but send a message to pal Eriksen live on TV.
His turn and shot back across the goalkeeper for a tenth-minute opener against the Russians was followed by a dash to the camera and shout of, ‘Chris, Chris, I love you’.
Thomas Meunier added a second on 34 minutes before turning supplier two minutes from time by sliding in Lukaku for his second and Belgium’s third.
The former Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea striker now has 62 goals in just 94 appearances for his country and helped turn Inter into Serie A champions.
Now, when judging this performance, also factor in that they did it without key man Kevin De Bruyne.
The Manchester City superstar has recovered from surgery on a facial injury but not soon enough to play their opener.
The experienced and influential Axel Witsel is in the squad, but not a starter, having been out since January after rupturing an Achilles tendon.
Then there is Eden Hazard. For so long the 108-cap superstar has been at the heart of what the Red Devils do. In the last World Cup in 2018, Fifa named him the second best player in the tournament and awarded him the Silver Ball.
But his fall from grace since moving from Chelsea to Real Madrid two years ago has been so dramatic that even his lesser-known brother Thorgan gets a start ahead of him.
Manager Roberto Martinez and captain Eden Hazard are hoping to inspire Belgium to European glory this summerCredit: Getty

And it was Thorgan’s ball from the right – spilled by keeper Anton Shunin – that set up Meunier for No 2.
Consider how Meunier became involved in the game, too, when assessing this opening performance from the Belgians.
Leicester defender Timothy Castagne was taken off with the same injury suffered by De Bruyne – a broken eye socket – following a sickening clash of heads in the 27th minute.
He will play no further part in the tournament.
But the enforced switch proved seamless as right-back Meunier came on and took to his task so impressively.
He is another who plays for Borussia Dortmund – how does that Bundesliga side do it?
Meunier scored just seven minutes after coming on and, two minutes from time, he waltzed through a now static Russian side to slip Lukaku in for his second.
Foxes star Youri Tielemans had long since outsmarted the opposition’s press to dominate midfield.
There will be greater challenges ahead, of course.
But the first team to qualify for these finals has already served notice that they aim to be the last to leave.

However, Denzel Dumfries then headed the decisive goal in the last ten minutes.

    THROWBACK
The last player to score a later winning goal for the Netherlands at the EUROs was current manager Frank de Boer at EURO 2000 against Czech Republic.
    GOALS HIGHLIGHTS
Best game of the tournament so far with some cracking goals, starting with Wijnaldum’s opener.
The 30-year-old pounced on Bushchan’s parry and passed the opener high and home.

Weghorst decided he wanted in on the action, and minutes after Wijnaldum’s opener, he doubled the Netherlands’ lead.
Smart finish from the big man.

Just when Ukraine looked down and out for the count, captain Yarmolenko waived his magic wand of a left foot.
And the West Ham man found the top-left corner with an emphatic finish.

Minutes later, Malinovskiy delivered a good free-kick into Holland’s penalty area, and Yaremchuk headed the equaliser home.
Game on at this point, and you could hear the tension and unrest in the crowd.

An unlikely goal source in Dumfries scored the winner to spare the Dutch’s blushes.
He got up well to meet Ake’s cross and his powerful header got the beating of Bushchan.

In conclusion, what a game of football!

Well, then. What a second half of international football!
Captain Wijnaldum took charge early on in the second half and latched onto the loose ball fumbled by Bushchan.
The 30-year-old placed the ball high into the back of the net to hand his team the lead.
Minutes later, Weghorst smashed the second past Bushchan to put the Netherlands in dreamland.
The game looked lost for Ukraine, until Yarmolenko decided he was going to cut inside and use his wand of a left foot.
The West Ham man cut inside and unleashed a powerful curing effort, picking out the top-left corner.
Malinovskiy stepped up and delivered a good free-kick into the box in the 79th minute.
And big man Yaremchuk managed to shake off his marker and head the equaliser home.
The crowd thought they were in for a nervy end to the game – but it was Dumfries who scored the winner.
Ake delivered a good cross towards the back post, and the right-back rose high to head the ball past Bushchan.

Team news, injury updates, latest odds for Spain vs Sweden as La Furia Roja look to take back Euros crown

SPAIN are back trying to win yet another major international trophy at Euro 2020 but they must first overcome Sweden in their opening game. La Furia Roja have been on the slide since 2014 when they were dumped out of the World Cup at the group stages, but they’ll be looking to claim back the Euros title they lost to France five years ago this summer.

Spain’s clash with Sweden will get underway from 8pm UK time on Monday, June 14 in Seville.
    What’s the form?
Spain head into Euro 2020 in rather scintillating form, having battered Lithuania 4-0 in their final warm-up game.
They drew with Portugal 0-0 just before that but in their last Nations League clash with Germany, Luis Enrique’s side ran out 6-0 winners.
Spain easily qualified from the Euro qualifying group, coincidentally ahead of their group stage opponents Sweden.
The Swedes finished in second place, four points above Norway who missed out on a play-off place.
Sweden beat Poland 4-2 in their final Euro 2020 warm-up game.

    Who’s in and who’s out?
The big news from Luis Enrique’s squad is that for the first time ever, there are no Real Madrid players in the squad for a major tournament.
Sergio Ramos was left out of the team in favour of Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte, who switched allegiances from France to Spain earlier this year.
Expect Laporte to start, with the likes of Alvaro Morata and Gerard Moreno up front for Spain.
Sweden will be without Zlatan Ibrahimpvic after he sustained an injury while playing for AC Milan toward the end of their Serie A season.
The Swedish FA said: “Zlatan has informed [head coach] Janne Andersson that his injury will stop him from participating in the European Championships this summer.
“Get well, Zlatan, we hope to see you on the football field again soon!”

    Watch out for…
The fact that both Spain and Sweden will be without their two most-experienced players this summer in Sergio Ramos and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Spain boss Luis Enrique has also had to deal with coronavirus issues with his squad, as Sergio Busquets tested positive recently, though it’s hoped it’s only a false positive.
In the meantime, Enrique has called up Brais Mendez, Rodrigo Moreno, Carlos Soler, Raul Albiol and Pablo Fornals as precautions.

    If the game’s rubbish…
Then look out for Spain’s starting striker Alvaro Morata’s wife Alice Campello.
The 26-year-old Italian stunner has three children with Morata, whom she married in 2017 when the Juventus man was playing for Chelsea.
Campello has a whopping 2.4million followers on Instagram and can often be seen at Morata’s games. So expect to see plenty of her this summer at Euro 2020.

Team news, injury updates, latest odds for Poland vs Slovakia as both sides aim for winning start at Euro 2020

PERENNIAL international tournament outsiders Poland get their Euro 2020 campaign underway against Slovakia. Both sides are in a tough group alongside two-time Euros winners Spain and a Sweden side without their legendary striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Poland vs Slovakia will be shown live on ITV 1 on Monday, June 14 with the game set to get underway at 5pm UK time at the Gazprom Arena in St Petersburg, Russia.
    What’s the form?
Poland head into this summer’s tournament with two draws from their two warm-up games over the past week against Russia and Iceland.
But the Poles topped their Euro qualifying group comfortably and are one of the hot favourites to get our of their group.
Slovakia, on the other hand, came third in their group behind Wales and Croatia, but qualified by beating Republic of Ireland in the play-offs.
They also head into Euro 2020 off the back of two draws against Austria and Bulgaria.

    Who’s in and who’s out?
Poland hero Robert Lewandowski will obviously start every game for Poland, having recovered from injury which kept him out the last portion of Bayern Munich’s season.
But the 32-year-old is doubtful the quality of the games this summer will be top-tier thanks to the hectic schedule the coronavirus pandemic has put upon football over the past year.
“The quality of games will go down. It’s not possible to stay with this quality on the top with so many games,” he said.
Leeds man Mateusz Klich could start in midfield, while Southampton star Jan Bednarek is likely to take his place in a back three for Paulo Sousa’s side.
Slovakia will have their own legend, Marek Hamsik, in their side, as well as Inter Milan’s own Milan Skriniar.
Newcastle shot-stopper Martin Dubravka will be in between the sticks for Slovakia.

    Watch out for…
The easy answer is Robert Lewandowski, Poland and Bayern Munich’s star striker. But we’ll go a little rogue here.
Milan Skriniar, often-linked with a big-money move to the Premier League and Inter Milan wall at the back could be the difference in this game.
The Slovak centre-back was brilliant throughout Inter’s Serie A-winning campaign and will be the man his side look to to keep the goals out during Euro 2020.
“I think we are well-established as a team. We have been together for a long time, we have rehearsed some things. We still have some time in St Petersburg for the first match with Poland, which will be very important,” he has said ahead of the game.
Milan Skriniar is one of the best defenders in the worldCredit: AFP

    If the game’s rubbish…
Then see if you can spot Robert Lewandowski’s wife Anna Lewandowski cheering on her striking expert of a husband during the Slovakia clash.
The 32-year-old is a bit of a striker herself – in Karate, having won multiple medals at the European and World Championships.
Lewandowska, also a nutrition specialist has two daughters, Kiara and Laura, with Lewandowski – and all three are expected to be present at Poland’s Euro 2020 games.

De Gea, 30, is not the only one feeling the heat in Seville.
The city is in the midst of a heatwave, with the pitchside temperature expected to be 30°C when the match kicks off at 9pm local time.
Enrique said: “There will be many factors in the match, with the heat being one of them.

He said: “I would love that and I’m convinced it will be the case.
“And I will continue to be convinced until I see evidence to the contrary. I am an optimist.
“Our first target is to get out of the group and then we will see if we can get past the round of 16.”

Spain’s preparations have been hit by a Covid outbreak which has sidelined captain Sergio Busquets and led to the whole squad being vaccinated.
But stand-in skipper Jordi Alba said: “We’re all in perfect shape, both physically and mentally, and are looking forward to playing this match.”
Spain finished above Sweden in their qualifying group, beating them 3-0 in Madrid in June 2019 before drawing 1-1 in Solna four months later.

Why do some England fans boo taking the knee at Euro 2020?

ENGLAND enter Euro 2020 with tensions between the players and some fans rumbling on over the taking of the knee. The Three Lions have stated that they will perform the gesture throughout the tournament, though a section of supporters have made their disapproval known by booing it before games.

England have been booed by a section of their supporters while taking the kneeCredit: AFP
In England’s warm-up matches against both Austria and Romania, a mix of boos and applause for the gesture was heard.
While in the opener against Croatia, mainly applause were heard but some boos still rang out.
Why do England take the knee?
England, like all Premier League clubs over the past season, state that they take the knee in support of racial equality.
Rejecting the idea that it is a political gesture, Gareth Southgate said: “I think we have got a situation where some people seem to think it is a political stand that they don’t agree with.
“That is not the reason the players are doing it. We are supporting each other.

“So, I was pleased that was drowned out by the majority of the crowd, but we can’t deny the fact that it happened.
“I think the most important thing for our players to know is that all their team-mates, all the staff, are fully supportive.
“I think the majority of people understand it.
“I think some people aren’t quite understanding the message, and I suppose we are seeing that across a number of football grounds at the moment.”
And Jordan Henderson said: “I think it shows that, if there’s still people booing because we’re standing together against racism, then there really still is a problem and we’ve still got to fight it and stand together on that.
“It shows even more that we have to keep going, keep fighting it. From our side, it’s about being together and doing what we think is right – and that’s what we feel is right.”

Why do some England fans boo the knee?
Sadly it is likely that some England fans are booing the idea of racial equality itself, though none are known to have openly said this.
The most common complaints from supporters revolve around the perception of it being a political gesture, the players “lecturing” them and a perceived association with the Black Lives Matter movement.
Andrew, a fan from Lincoln who booed, told BBC Radio 1: “Booing is a way football fans can communicate dissatisfaction.
He added that he sees the knee as “an identity politics agenda that focuses on black people and skin colour, when as far as I am concerned we are all England fans regardless of colour.”
And he finished: “Some seem to genuinely believe booing is an act of racism – I reject that.”
A twitter user who supported the booing stated: “If I want to watch politics, I’d switch on Westminster Live.”
Reasons such as opposition to Black Lives Matter or keeping politics out of football have been given by England fans who booCredit: Getty
The Free Speech Union, who represented a Cambridge United fan who was banned until he could satisfy the club he wasn’t a racist, provided the following explanation for his actions.
“In the case of our member, he didn’t boo because he disapproves of BLM, but because he wants to keep politics out of football.
“Why shouldn’t he be allowed to express that view, provided he does so in a lawful and peaceful way?
“We take no view on the politics of BLM – we would be taking our member’s side if he’d been punished for applauding the players’ gesture or roaring his approval.”
How did taking the knee start?
Kneeling throughout history has been a gesture of prayer and Reverend Martin Luther King led civil rights protesters to take the knee in prayer in 1965.
However, the knee as a gesture in sport was started by NFL player Colin Kaepernick in 2015.
The then-49ers quarterback began the protest by sitting down during the US national anthem.
He stated of the gesture: “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.
“To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way.
“There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

However, after Kaepernick sat down, a former US Green Beret – Nate Boyer – wrote him a personal letter explaining that while he supported the cause he was protesting for, he was disappointed that he had chosen to express his views in the way he did.
After that, Kaepernick decided to meet up with Boyer and they agreed that rather than sitting, Kaepernick would kneel for the anthem.
That gesture, they perceived, was a more respectful one as it is typically used as to honour fallen members of the armed forces.
Do footballers take the knee for Black Lives Matter?
Though supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement do take the knee, footballers have stated that they are not kneeling for this reason.
The knee in English football was adopted after the murder of African-American George Floyd by white police officer Derek Chauvin in May 2020.
At the time, the Premier League and its clubs explicitly did support Black Lives Matter, with the organisation’s logo sewn onto every player’s shirt.
However, after a statue of Winston Churchill was vandalised by BLM protesters in London and the BLM UK Twitter account criticised the state of Israel, the Premier League moved to distance itself from the cause.

The Black Lives Matter U.K. account tweeted: “As Israel moves forward with the annexation of the West Bank, and mainstream British politics is gagged of the right to critique Zionism, and Israel’s settler colonial pursuits, we loudly and clearly stand beside our Palestinian comrades.
    “Free Palestine.”
When the 2020/21 season started, English football clubs agreed that rather than kneeling in solidarity with Black Lives Matter, they would kneel in support of a new No Room For Racism campaign.
However, a number of clubs continued to display the Black Lives Matter logo prominently in their stadiums throughout the season.
What is the FA’s view on taking the knee?
FA Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Director Edleen John stated that the FA supports the players’ right to protest in support of racial equality.
She added: “When you’re booing players taking a knee, you are booing the right of those individuals to have a voice and to protest against inequality.”
The FA has not given a view on whether it supports action being taken against fans who boo the knee.
However, unlike overt racist abuse, booing the knee is not thought to be a criminal offence.

What has the global reaction to the knee been?
Most national teams do not generally take the knee in their matches, but do if they are playing against England, Wales or Ireland.
(Scotland have been taking the knee but chose to stop in March and Steve Clarke has stated that they have yet to make a decision on kneeling in Euro 2020.)
However, this is not always the case, with Czech Republic refusing to kneel against Wales and Poland doing likewise against England.
Both teams chose instead to perform the “apolitical” anti-racism gesture of pointing to the Uefa Respect logo on the sleeves of their shirts.

When England played Romania, two Romanian players chose not to kneel.
Nicolae Stanciu stated that he had refused to kneel in support of Slavia Prague team-mate Ondrej Kudela, who received a ten-game ban from Uefa for racially abusing Rangers’ Glen Kamara.
The other player, Ionut Nedelcearu wrote on Instagram that he “did not feel that I should do it out of a simple obligation.
He added: “My view and attitude towards life is that the messages that we as members of the society should send against racism should be much clearer and should concern all the manifestations of racism that we experience in our daily lives.
“From my standpoint it is rather hypocritical to believe that we fulfill our duty against racism simply by obeying an order to kneel!”
In Hungary’s Euro 2020 warm-up with Ireland meanwhile, the Hungarian team chose not to take the knee while the Irish did and were roundly booed by the 15,000 crowd.
Most teams at Euro 2020 have chosen not to take the knee and the Belgium team were booed by many in St Petersburg when they performed the gesture against Russia.

Team news, injury updates, latest odds for Scotland vs Czech Republic as Scots get Euro 2020 campaign underway

SCOTLAND are back in the international big time as they take on Czech Republic in their Euro 2020 opener at Hampden Park. Steve Clarke’s side will be gunning for a massive win to open up their tough Group D campaign, which also includes games against England and Croatia.

⚽ Follow ALL of the latest news and updates from Euro 2020 with our live blog
And you can catch all of the action live on BBC One from 2pm on Monday, the first of THREE games throughout the day.
    What’s the form?
Scotland are participating in their first Euros since 1996, when they were also in a group with heated rivals England.
Heading into this summer’s tournament, the Scots were unbeaten in their two warm-up games against Holland and Luxembourg, beating the latter 1-0.
Scotland finished third in their qualifying group but managed to overcome Serbia on penalties in the play-offs to reach Euro 2020.
Czech Republic were beaten handily 4-0 by Italy last week but they bounced back with a win against Albania to head into the Euros with a victory under their belts.
“It’s behind us now, we need to learn from this, concentrate on the match against Albania and then put all our thoughts towards Scotland and ensure we don’t perform like that again,” Czech boss Jaroslav Silhavy said.
The Czechs finished second in their qualifying group, which was topped by their third Euro 2020 match day opponents England.

    Who’s in and who’s out?
Scotland included Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour in their young squad, which also includes David Turnbull and Nathan Patterson.
Ole McBurnie has a foot injury so will not be available, while Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack also misses out with injury.
Andy Robertson, John McGinn and Scott McTominay are all expected to start for Clarke’s side against Czech Republic.
Former Scotland player Steven Naismith said:
“Billy Gilmour is an exceptional talent. He is somebody who has come into the international scene and made an impact in a short period of time.
“I’m sure the other boys in the middle of the park will be trying to keep him out.”
Their opponents, on the other hand, will have West Ham stalwart Tomas Soucek anchoring the midfield.
Hammers right-back Vladimir Coufal is in the 26-man squad, as is Bayer Leverkusen start Patrik Schick.

    Watch out for…
West Ham’s Tomas Soucek, who was instrumental in the Hammers’ sixth place Premier League finish last term.
An engine in the middle of the park, Soucek can break up play and get forward with pace, often popping up late on the edge of the box or at the back post for corners.
Soucek notched 10 times for West Ham in the league last season, and he’ll be hoping his form continues with the Czech Republic this summer.

    If the game’s rubbish…
Have a look to see if Patrik Shick’s long-term partner Hana is in the crowd.
The Czech beauty can often be spotted watching her man’s games from the stands and this summer at the Euros will be no different.
Hana boasts over 4,000 followers on Instagram and got married to Leverkusen star Schick last year.
