Spain boss Luis Enrique is extreme sports junkie who ran the Marathon des Sables and an Ironman Triathlon

MOVE over Robert Downey Jr, here’s the real Iron Man.Spain boss Luis Enrique will demand his team give their all and don’t stop running for 90 minutes at Euro 2020.
Luis Enrique competed in the gruelling Marathon des Sables in 2008
Enrique loves to cycle the most testing sections of the Tour de FranceCredit: Twitter @LUISENRIQUE21
And that’s because the 51-year-old, once linked with a move to the Premier League with Chelsea, is an adrenaline junkie who has shown tremendous stamina in the past and has completed the most gruelling race EVER.
In 2008, the LaLiga winner (as both a manager and player) ran the Marathon des Sables, an endurance race that’s the equivalent of six marathons.
And it’s not the mileage that’ll kill, but the extreme conditions.
Des Sables takes place in the uncompromising surroundings of the Sahara desert, where temperatures can exceed 50 degrees centigrade.
Over six days, competitors have to complete 156 miles to finish the ultramarathon.
The longest stage lasts an incredible 57 miles.
And it’s such a hard task, competitors MUST carry all their provisions in a backpack.
The Marathon des Sables was created by French concert promoter Patrick Bauer in 1986.
Ever since then it’s been an annual event attracting thousands of runners every year.

Enrique was renowned for being a hard-working and energetic player during his days at Barcelona and Real Madrid.
So, when he hung up his boots in 2004 it wasn’t too much of a surprise to see him keep up his fitness.
However, his love of pushing himself to the limits seems now more impressive than his football career.
In 2005, he ran the New York Marathon in a time of 3:14:09.
Cycling and swimming are totally different from running. The training is far more pleasant.Luis Enrique
A year later he tried his hand at the Amsterdam Marathon and clocked in at 3:00:19.
Then at the Florence Marathon in 2007, Luis finished the race in an astonishing 2:58:08.
And if you think that’s great, wait till you hear this.
In the same year, Enrique took part in the 2007 Ironman competition in Germany.
That’s a 140-mile triathlon race that’s been dubbed the hardest endurance race in the world.
The adrenalin junkie isn’t just partial to a spot of running either.
The keen surfer, who loved crashing waves when he lived in Australia, loves cycling too.
He finished the Quebrantahuesos – a 127-mile race through the Pyrenees – which loosely translated means “bone crusher.”
Still, that didn’t deter Enrique, and in an interview with FourFourTwo he spoke about his fitness regime.
The most gruelling race on earth
THE Marathon des Sables is justifiably known as the most gruelling race on earth.
The monstrous course is 156 miles, equivalent to six marathons, run through the Sahara desert in six days in Morroco.
    The conditions are horrendous.
Temperatures can hit 120F (50C) and all the 1,5000 competitors must carry all their provisions for the whole race in a backpack.
This must include all their food, of at least 2,000 calories a day,  and mandatory kits such as a venom pump.
Racers sleep in an open sided tent with seven other competitors.

“When I left football I wanted to take up running, but after 45 minutes my feet would swell up because I was used to football,” he revealed.
“In football it’s 50 metres, then stop, 10 metres, then stop.
“I was used to that. I could run for a long time, but in a football way.
“Marathons were at the same pace all the time. That was hard to adapt to, but I did after a lot of training and then I started doing triathlons.

“Cycling and swimming are totally different from running. The training is far more pleasant.”When I’m training, for three days I run in the morning and swim in the afternoon.
“Then I go on the bicycle every three or four days.”
Judging by the high-standards Luis has set himself, training sessions with the Spanish national team must be hell on earth.

Scotland 0 Czech Republic 2: Tartan Army already fighting to stay in Euro 2020 after Patrick Schick’s 50-yard wondergoal

SCOTLAND’s return to the international big time ended in bitter frustration as Steve Clarke’s team were put to the sword by the bouncing Czechs. Two goals from striker Patrik Schick – one an extraordinary lob from the halfway line – leaves the Scots bottom of Group D.

Now they will travel to Wembley on Friday knowing they must get something against England to stand any real chance of progressing to the knock-out stages for the first time in their history.
There was a major spanner in the works for Clarke’s plans when Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney was ruled out by ‘a little niggle’.
But that couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the first crowd in Scotland since lockdown was imposed 15 months ago.
It certainly sounded as though there were a hell of a lot more than 10,000 inside Hampden when they belted out their national anthem ahead of kick-off.
And they almost had even more to get excited about inside five minutes when John McGinn was only denied by a crucial block from Thomas Kalas.
The Czechs knew they were in for a difficult afternoon when the supporters were asked to make some noise for them and responded with a loud chorus of booing.
There is a lingering bitterness in Glasgow after Slavia Prague knocked Rangers out of the Europa League in March and Ondrej Kudela received a ten-match ban for racism.
The visitors, though, were not going to be put off by a bit of heckling and forced the first save of the game when Schick tested the reflexes of veteran keeper David Marshall.

But the Scots were quickly back on the front foot when skipper Andy Robertson broke down the flank and teed up Lyndon to poke an 18th minute shot just wide of the near post.
They came even closer to a breakthrough when Ryan Christie rolled the ball into Robertson’s path for a rising shot which keeper Tomas Vaclik did well to turn over.
Yet just when it seemed that they were taking control, they fell behind to Schick’s towering header as the Bayer Leverkusen striker outjumped Grant Hanley to nod in Vladimir Coufal’s 42nd minute cross.
The visitors could have been out of sight within the first minute of the second-half when Marshall was twice forced into crucial saves by Schick and Vladimir Darida.
Scotland came within an inch of an equaliser when Jack Hendry’s first-time shot came back off the bar before Kalas almost turned the ball into his own goal.
But their fate was well and truly sealed in the 52nd minute when Schick beat the backtracking Marshall with an extraordinary effort from all of 50 yards out.

If two or more teams finish level on points after having played all three group stage games, head-to-head record will decide which team finishes higher.
This means that if three teams finish level on points, their position in the group will be decided exclusively on results against each other, with games against the fourth team being almost irrelevant.

Arnautovic says Austria celebration vs North Macedonia wasn’t racist amid claims he shouted ‘I f***ed your Albanian mum’

AUSTRIA’S Marko Arnautovic insists his crazy celebration was not a racist tirade against North Macedonians of Albanian heritage. The hothead striker of Serbian descent had to be contained by skipper David Alaba after coming off the bench to make it 3-1 on Sunday.

The ex-West Ham star, 32, reacted by screaming at Leeds’ Ezgjan Alioski, who is part-Albanian but chose to play for the country of his birth, North Macedonia.
Serbian newspaper Informer alleged that an angry Arnautovic blasted: “I f****d your Albanian mother.”
There is still plenty of tension between Albania and Serbia, centering around the historically-disputed Kosovo.
Many of the North Macedonian players are half-Albanian and Arnautovic apologised for his actions, but is adamant it was not a racial slur.
He said: “I am not a racist and will never be a racist.
“There was a battle of words in the emotion, from both sides.

“My friends, who have grown into my family, are from all over the world.
“To all those people who felt addressed: I’m sorry.”

Austria’s sporting director Peter Schottel added: “Trash talk is part of football.
“The most important thing is that Marko has made it clear he has nothing to do with politics.
“The second thing is that it was cleared up after the game. The topic has been resolved.”

Watch Patrik Schick score Euro 2020 ‘goal of tournament’ with insane 50-yard strike against Scotland for Czech Republic

Patrik Schick’s incredible goal for the Czech Republic vs Scotland
As Czech Republic broke Schick saw Marshall out of position and went for the audacious effort.
And he produced one of the greatest finishes in Euros history as he perfectly whipped the ball up and over Marshall from 50 yards out.
The poor goalkeeper was left in a heap in his own net afterwards.
The goal was the furthest out anyone has scored from at the European Championships since 1980.
The wonder goal sealed a 2-0 victory as Scotland’s return to a major tournament for the first time since 1998 ended in disaster.

Social media exploded immediately after the goal hit the back of the net, with football fans stunned by the strike from Schick.
Former England striker Gary Lineker gave his humorous reaction to the goal, adding: “That goal was Schick.”
And Piers Morgan also got in on the act by posting: “HOLY SCHICK!!! The Czechs just deflowered Scotland with a 51-yard wonder-goal. Incredible.”
Former Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil said: “Ohhhhhhhhhh Schick. I guess we have already the goal of the tournament.”

One said: “Got to be a contender for best goal so far of the #Euros2021!”
And another added: “It is the best. Don’t let that commentary subdue you. One of the greatest goals ever scored in international tournament football.”
While a third said: “That should carry an x rating. Absolutely obscene goal.”

The Czech forward added to his first half header which gave his team the lead at the break.
Scotland had several chances to claw themselves back into the game in the second half but they failed to convert as their wastefulness in front of goal proved costly.
Speaking about his incredible goal after the match, Schick said: “I checked already in the first half and I thought if the chance comes along, I know he stays very high [up the pitch].
“So when the ball came I just had a quick check where he was standing and I saw he was high so I tried it. It was a nice goal.”
It was a thoroughly disappointing start to the Euros for Scotland who are playing in their first major tournament in 23 years since they qualified for the 1998 World Cup.
The defeat against the Czech Republic comes just four days before they travel to Wembley Stadium to take on England in a game they now desperately need to get something from.
If they are beaten by England, the Scots will be hoping a win in their final group game against Croatia is enough to see them advance through to the last 16.
Scotland have never been past the group stage of a major football tournament.

Denmark’s hero captain Simon Kjaer could be promoted to AC Milan skipper after giving Christian Eriksen CPR

AC MILAN are considering making Denmark hero Simon Kjaer their captain, according to reports. The Dane stopped Christian Eriksen from swallowing his tongue before performing CPR on his stricken team-mate on Saturday.

The Dane has been widely praised for his heroic actions after Christian Eriksen’s cardiac arrest on SaturdayCredit: The Sun
And the Italian giants are thinking about making him their permanent skipper as a result, according to Sportsmediaset.
Milan legend – and the club’s technical director – Paolo Maldini is said to support the move.
And Kjaer also has the fans’ backing with some supporters even starting a social media campaign to get him the armband, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
Eriksen, 29, collapsed during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland and the team doctor said he ‘was gone’ before they started cardiac resuscitation.
He needed 13 minutes of intense medical treatment – including CPR and defibrillator shocks – but was thankfully stretchered off the pitch awake soon after.
It was confirmed on Sunday the former Tottenham man had suffered a cardiac arrest but was stable.
And he sent a brief message to the public on Monday.
Denmark captain Kjaer has been widely hailed for his decisive action just moments after Eriksen collapsed.

Eriksen was revived and stretchered off the pitch awake

The 32-year-old defender dashed from his position and pushed aside other players to immediately place Eriksen into the recovery position, clearly unconscious.
Kjaer realised what was going on and worked to stop the 29-year-old from swallowing his tongue and then took the life-saving decision to start performing CPR on his stricken friend.
And the 108-cap international’s inspiring actions could see him promoted at the San Siro.
Current club captain Alessio Romagnoli rarely starts these days and could reportedly leave in the summer.
And vice-captain Gianluigi Donnarumma is said to have agreed a £200,000-a-week deal with Paris Saint-Germain after deciding to leave Milan this summer at the end of his contract.
Kjaer has been at Milan since September when he joined from Sevilla for around £3.2million. He played 39 times in all competitions last season and scored once.
Christian Eriksen’s life was saved by the fast reactions of team-mates and medics after Kjaer intervened
Eriksen’s worried team-mates look on as he receives treatment on Saturday night
On Monday, Denmark keeper Kasper Schmeichel said it was ‘damn nice’ to see Eriksen laughing and smiling when he visited the playmaker in hospital with Kjaer.
And the Leicester keeper also revealed his admiration for his national team captain.
He said: “I am incredibly proud to have him as captain.
“It does not surprise me that he did as he did. He has an incredibly sensitive and human side of him.
“Simon and Christian spend a lot of time together in Milan as they live close to each other.
“We did not make any decisions. We did, as we did. I think it’s a very natural thing. Simon… I do not know what to say. He is an exceptional person.”

After England star Phil Foden’s Gazza-like haircut, here’s what other Euro 2020 heroes look like with iconic hairdos

WHEN it comes to haircuts, England’s stars over the years have had plenty of styles.Forget the short back and sides, some have even experimented with cornrows, ponytails and mullets.
Phil Foden shows off his new Euro 2020 dyed haircutCredit: PA
Foden’s hairstyle was inspired by Paul Gascoigne’s Euro ’96 French cropCredit: Rex
Even in time for Euro 2020, Three Lions playmaker Phil Foden has paid tribute to Paul Gascoigne’s famous dyed blonde french crop by getting a similar hairdo.
But have you ever wondered what Harry Maguire would look like with a Bobby Charlton comb over? Or even Jordan Pickford with a David Seaman-like ponytail?
Here’s how today’s England Euro 2020 stars look with iconic hairdos from former Three Lions heroes.
    Harry Kane/Wayne Rooney
When Wayne Rooney was preparing for his last tournament as an England player at Euro 2016, a hair transplant had restored some of his locks.
Harry Kane certainly isn’t lacking in the hair department, sporting an old-fashioned short-back and sides with a lifted quiff.
However, give the Tottenham striker Rooney’s thin thatch and it gives him a totally different look.

    Jordan Henderson/David Beckham
We could’ve gone for a variety of Becks’ haircuts, but it’s the cornrows that Beckham debuted in 2003 that were certainly his most outrageous.
And on Jordan Henderson they look truly bizarre.
Who do you think pulls them off best though?

    Harry Maguire/Bobby Charlton
Perhaps the most famous England haircut of all time is the Bobby Charlton combover.
The Manchester United legend wasn’t bothered by the fine strands of hair covering his crown.
Current Red Devils star Harry Maguire normally has a thick head of hair – so this looks most unusual.

    Raheem Sterling/Ian Wright
Sterling was England’s Euro 2020 hero against Croatia.
And while Ian Wright never quite hit the heights as the Manchester City winger has with his international career, he still was a crucial part in the Three Lions qualifying for a World Cup in 1998.
When Wrighty played, he went for a shaved look. Sterling, of course, goes with a shaved afro… but if you swap the two.

    Jordan Pickford/David Seaman
England goalie legend David Seaman had one of the most recognisable hairdos in football.
Slicked back on top with a pony-tail it was iconic until he cut it off for charity in 2005.
Doesn’t quite suit Pickford as well though.
Jordan Pickford sporting a ponytail just like David Seaman’s

    Jack Grealish/Chris Waddle
The Aston Villa man certainly looks after his hair and sports a trendy look with long locks on top and shaved sides – like someone from the Peaky Blinders.
In his day, Chris Waddle was somewhat of a pop icon and favoured a mullet – once famously showing it off on Top of the Pops singing ‘Diamond Lights’ opposite Glenn Hoddle.

    Marcus Rashford/John Barnes
In 1990, and throughout most of his career, John Barnes styled his hair into a small afro.

Red Devils star Rashford also embraces his afro – but has grown his much bigger.
So what would he look like with Barnes’ do? Wonder no more.
