Why are France, Portugal and Germany in the same Euro 2020 group?

EURO 2020 is underway and it’s the turn of the group of death to swing into action. All of the past three tournament winners have been drawn together in possibly the toughest group in the history of the European Championship.

Germany boss Joachim Low has been set a tough test in his final tournamentCredit: AFP
The group sees 2014 world champions Germany, European champions Portugal and current world champions all face off.
Hungary are the other team in the group and the government in Budapest has announced a full capacity crowd for all games in the city.
And they’ll need every one of their Hungarian supporters if they are to cause an upset in this group.
Why have Portugal, France and Germany been drawn in the same group?
When the draw for the Euros was made back in 2019, Uefa decided on a new system which would seed teams based purely on qualifying performance.
And while Portugal did qualify comfortably for Euro 2020, they didn’t enjoy a particularly impressive campaign as they finished behind Ukraine.
That led to them being seeded third for the European Championship and primed for a tough group.
It was also thanks to the Ukrainians that France ended up in the group of death.
France won their qualifying group but took just one point from two games off Turkey.
And that meant Ukraine were able to poach the final top seeded spot when Artem Besyedin scored a last minute equaliser in their final game in Serbia.
Meanwhile Germany and Hungary were both pre-drawn into Group F as Munich and Budapest had already been chosen as the group’s two host cities.

Who is hosting the matches and how many fans will be at each game?
As Germany qualified with more points-per-game than Hungary, they will play all three of their games in Munich.
However, they will play in front of just a 20 per cent capacity – the lowest of any host city – after the Bavarian government refused to approve a bigger crowd.
Hungary meanwhile will play France and Portugal in Budapest in front of a full stadium before heading to Munich to face Germany.
France vs Portugal will take place in Budapest, also with no limit on capacity.
    How many teams qualify?
The top two teams qualify automatically from the group.
However, there is also a possibility that all three of France, Portugal and Germany could go through.
The four best placed third placed teams will each qualify for the knockout stages at the Euros.
And it was under this system that Portugal emerged winners at Euro 2016. More

Team news, injury updates, latest odds for Hungary vs Portugal at Euro 2020

PORTUGAL are looking to retain their European Championship crown… and five years on from glory they have a much better team. They get started against Hungary on Tuesday with the game getting underway at 5pm on ITV 1.
Cristiano Rolando, 36, will spearhead Portugal’s attackCredit: GETTY IMAGES
Portugal and Hungary are joined in Group F by world champions France and former world champions Germany.
    What’s the form?
European champions Portugal are unbeaten in their last six international fixtures.
And their last defeat came at the hands of the French back in November 2020.
Impressively, Hungary are unbeaten in their last 11 international fixtures, with their last defeat dating back to September 2020 against Russia.
Hungary did, however, draw their last warm-up fixture ahead of the tournament against the Republic of Ireland.

    Who’s in and who’s out?
Portugal boss Fernando Santos has a very strong 26-man squad to pick from, including big names such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Ruben Dias.
Portugal’s squad for this summer’s tournament is arguably stronger than the team which won Euro 2016.
As for Hungary, they have a handful of Bundesliga stars in their ranks this summer.
Peter Gulacsi (RB Leipzig), Willi Orban (RB Leipzig), Roland Sallai (Freiburg) and Adam Szalai (Mainz) will all be key for Hungary.
But star man Dominik Szoboszlai will miss the tournament after failing to recover from a groin injury.
The 20-year-old had a good start to the season for RB Salzburg, but shortly after moving to sister club RB Leipzig he picked up an injury.

    Watch out for…
With a stronger team, Portugal should be winning games inside 90 minutes.
Back in 2016, they drew all of their group games, only won one game inside 90 minutes and somehow still won the tournament.
This time, Ronaldo has the likes of Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes and Joao Felix supplying him with goal-scoring opportunities.
Hungary could spring a surprise shock with Portugal’s poor group stage showing in the last tournament.
He’s [Ronaldo] our leader, our captain. As usual he’s preparing in the best way. He’s one of the best professionals around. The numbers speak for themselves. He’s still going, he’s still a beast, so expect nothing else but greatness.”Jose FontetalkSPORT

    If the game’s rubbish…
Check out anything Ronaldo – specifically his £17million car collection, or his uncertain future at Juventus.
The 36-year-old had a good individual season in Italy, but the team’s overall performance saw them drop the title to Inter Milan and finish 4th in the Serie A.
Ronaldo managed to find the back of the net 36 times this season across all competitions.
And his goals will be important for Portugal this summer.

Team news, injury updates, latest odds for France vs Germany at Euro 2020

FIVE years on and France are looking to right the wrongs of 2016, and claim the crown they fumbled in the final against Portugal. And they start off their group stage campaign against former world champions Germany.
Karim Benzema returns to France international duty for the first time in almost six yearsCredit: GETTY IMAGES
France and Germany are joined in Group F by defending European champions Portugal and underdogs Hungary.
The game is due to get underway at 8PM, and ITV 1 will be showing the game.
    What’s the form?
Heading into this summer’s tournament, France have avoided defeat in their last 23 games dating back to November 2018.
Their last defeat came at the hands of the Netherlands in a 2-0 away defeat.
As for Germany, they have put in some poor showings at the last two major tournaments.
The Germans have won two of their last three games, with a defeat coming against North Macedonia.

    Who’s in and who’s out
Germany manager Joachim Low has recalled Bundesliga duo Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels for this summer’s tournament.
Champions League-winning trio Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Antonio Rudiger have all received a call-up.
And there’s also a place for German wonderkid Jamal Musiala.
As for France, Karim Benzema returns to the squad after spending six years in exile.
The Real Madrid forward was arrested over the alleged blackmail of fellow French player Mathieu Valbuena – an allegation Benzema has always denied.
He also accused boss Didier Deschamps of bowing to pressure after he was dropped.
There’s a place for Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram.
The young forward enjoyed a fruitful season in front of goal, scoring 11 goals and providing 12 assists across all competitions

    Watch out for…
Keep an eye out for Musiala – it will be interesting to see whether he gets game time.
Also, it is Low’s last tournament in charge of Germany so they’ll be looking to give their coach a good send-off.
France are firm favourites to win the competition with their stacked team.
Kylian Mbappe is the obvious big-name player that springs to mind, and he’ll look to cement his place in world class status.

    If the game’s rubbish…
Well, maybe look into Olivier Giroud and Mbappe’s little feud after the Bulgaria game.
Giroud appeared to hit out at Mbappe following the win against Bulgaria in the warm-up fixture ahead of the tournament.
And Mbappe has reportedly refused to accept an apology for the Chelsea forward.
Giroud told L’Equipe du Soir: “I was a little quiet because, sometimes, I make runs and the balls aren’t forthcoming.
“I am not saying that I always make the best runs, but I am seeking to offer solutions in the box.”

The Juventus star eats clean and nutritious food SIX times a day in his bid to play at the highest level.
And there is absolutely no room for sugar in Ronaldo’s books.
The Portugal captain appeared to take offence when presented with Coke bottles at a press conference before Tuesday’s Euros clash with Hungary.
Wearing a bemused expression, Ronaldo grabbed the two containers of fizzy pop that were placed in front of his microphone before moving them out of sight.
The ex-Man United and Real Madrid ace then produced a bottle of water, which he waved at journalists before declaring: “Drink water!”
SunSport revealed how Ronaldo eats six meals each day to stay in tip-top shape.
His meals include steak, calamari and even fresh swordfish.
And Ronaldo takes up to FIVE naps a day to help him digest the grub.

He said: “We’ll see if my son will become a great footballer.
“Sometimes he drinks coke and eats crisps and it irritates me, he knows that.
“Sometimes I tell my son to take a dip in cold water to recover after a run on the treadmill and he says, ‘Dad, it’s so cold there’.

Spain 0-0 Sweden LIVE RESULT: Spaniards dominate possession as Swedes miss two sitters in Euro 2020 clash

SPAIN and Sweden played out a goalless draw in a game full of changes.La Roja set a record for most first half passes in the history of the European Championship but were unable to find a way through.
And they could even have found themselves behind.
First Alexander Isak hit the post and then he did brilliant work to set up Marcus Berg, who put a tap-in wide.
    THAT’S ALL FOR NOW
Spain dominated the game, and showed their class on the ball – but they couldn’t translate the high possession into goals.
And Sweden arguably had the best chances of the game through Isak and Berg.
Slovakia top the group for now, with Spain and Sweden two points behind.
Spain face Poland on Saturday, June 19 with kick-off scheduled for 8pm.
And Sweden take on group leaders Slovakia on Friday, June 18 with the game due to get underway at 2pm.
    Goodnight!
    ISAK’S A STAR
Isak started the move, before laying the ball on a plate for Berg at the back post.

    FULL-TIME STATS
Look at the possession and passes completed!

    FT: SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
Sweden hold three-time winners Spain to a draw in Seville!
The Spaniards had 85 per cent of the ball throughout the whole 90 minutes, but couldn’t score.
Sweden, in fact, had the best chance of the game.
Isak, surrounded by three Spanish players, showed his quick feet to find a yard and deliver a low cross towards the far post.
But an unmarked Berg sliced the huge opportunity wide. Not the best of starts for Spain at Euro 2020.
    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!
THE FULL-TIME WHISTLE GOES IN SEVILLE!
SWEDEN HOLD ON FOR A DRAW!
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
90+5. Moreno heads wide of the post.
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
90+4. Oyarzabal wins Spain a late corner.
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    90+2. CHANCE!
Pedri clips the ball in behind Sweden’s backline for Alba to run onto.
The left-back gets to the byline again and delivers a great cross towards the far post.
Sarabia doesn’t read the situation well, and the ball bounces off his knee and into the arms of Olsen!
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    90. BIG SAVE!
Sarabia cuts inside off the right flank and floats a cross into Sweden’s penalty area.
Moreno meets the cross unmarked, but he is denied by the legs of Everton’s Olsen!
    Should score.
The fourth official holds his board up and there will be six, yes six additional minutes played.
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    89. Alba is wonderfully picked out running down the left channel.
And the Spain captain manages to get to the byline and deliver a low cross towards the near post.
Moreno flicks the ball towards goal, but it deflects off the leg of Danielsson and goes behind the goal.
The linesman has his flag up for offside, but the replay says otherwise – Spain should have had a corner-kick.
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    87. SUBSTITUTION!
Pena, otherwise known as Fabian, who plays for Napoli is on for Koke in the midfield.
Defensive man on for a creative player in Koke.
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    85. Incredibly resilient display from Sweden, they thoroughly deserve the point IF they get it!
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    83. DOUBLE SUBSTITUTION!
Olsson is taken off for Cajuste, and Bengtsson is on for Forsberg who has been largely anonymous.
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    81. Alba plays a quick ball into the path of Oyarzabal inside Sweden’s penalty area.
The Real Sociedad winger shows a good burst of pace to get to the byline and drill a low cross into the six-yard box.
But Danielsson thumps the danger clear.
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    79. Swedish players are starting to pick up little knocks and cramp, but it’s not at all surprising – they’ve been chasing the ball for large parts of the game.
No20 Olsson is the latest victim as he lunged to intercept the ball.
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    77. Sarabia cuts inside off the right-hand side and waives his wand of a left foot, sending a good cross right into the six-yard box.
Moreno almost gets on the end of it, but Olsen punches clear for Sweden.
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    75 SUBSTITUTIONS!
Spain make a double substitution and Moreno finally comes on for Olmo in attack.
    And Oyarzabal replaces Torres.
And for Sweden, Newcastle’s Krafth is on for Lustig who appears to have picked up an injury.
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    73. BLOCK!
Llorente gets to the byline and cuts the ball back towards the edge of the penalty area.
Olmo takes a touch and sends a low strike towards goal, but Danielsson blocks!
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    71. You can see signs of Spanish frustration now. They’re conceding sloppy free-kicks.
Sweden do look happy with the draw, and it would be a massive, massive point if they can get it.
Berg misses at the back post, unmarkedCredit: GETTY IMAGES
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    69. Thiago wins Spain a free-kick in a promising position inside the opposition half.
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    67. DOUBLE SUBSTITUTION!
Berg’s night comes to an end after his dreadful miss and he is replaced by Mainz’s Quaison
And arguably Sweden’s best player Isak is taken off for Claesson.
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    66. Torres has temporarily moved up front for Spain, and he has an eye for goal.
But how long until we see a 20-goal-a-season striker in Moreno? He should be on!
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    64. DOUBLE SUBSTITUTION!
Liverpool’s Thiago and PSG’s Sarabia are on for Rodri and Morata.
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    62. Enrique has seen enough, he has signalled for two or three players to go and warm-up down the touchline.
Moreno and Thiago are off down the line getting their legs warm.
    SPAIN 0-0 SWEDEN
    60. BIG CHANCE!
Isak starts a sweeping counter attack and receives the ball back on the edge of Spain’s penalty area.
The youngster is surrounded by three Spanish defenders and he skilfully gets away from them all.
He lays the ball on a plate at the back post and his strike-partner Berg fails to convert!

Spain 0 Sweden 0: Alvaro Morata misses sitter as Euro campaign gets off to jittery start for Luis Enrique’s men

The three-times winners got their 2020 campaign off to a disappointing start as they wasted a stack of chances against a bog-standard Swedish side.
It capped a miserable week for the Spaniards, whose preparations were marred by a coronavirus outbreak.
Luis Enrique saw his stars dominate their Group E opener but unlike the Covid vaccines they had to take last week, they failed to break the skin.
The disgruntled home fans certainly would have had even more of the needle with their coach had Sweden’s Alexander Isak and Marcus Berg not missed sitters on rare counter attacks either side of the break.
Enrique ended weeks of speculation about who would play in goal by selecting Unai Simon over David De Gea – just when the Manchester United man thought his season could not get any worse.
In truth, Athletic Bilbao keeper Simon did what was asked of him – but then with a name like that he was always going to.
As for Sweden, they were delighted with a draw.
Janne Andersson’s boys probably could believe how wasteful their opponents were in front of goal.

They will have to attack more in their matches against Slovakia and Poland – while Spain need to be more clinical if they are to take the heat off under-fire Enrique.
The former Real Madrid and Barcelona player showed once again he is his own man and not afraid to make unpopular calls.
He did it when he overlooked Sergio Ramos, thus not including a single player from Real Madrid in his squad.
He did so when he stubbornly insisted on naming just 24 players in his group, rather than take up UEFA’s full quota of 26.
And he did it again by selecting Simon instead of De Gea.
It is a little over two years to the day since Spain thrashed Sweden 3-0 in a 2020 qualifier.

The nations then drew 1-1 in Solna in October 2019 as the Spaniards finished top of their group ahead of the Swedes.
Spain have not made it past the last 16 of a major Finals since winning this tournament back in 2012.
Enrique knows another early exit here and he will not be the only one sweating in Seville.
After another sweltering day in Spain’s fourth largest city, the temperature at the Estadio La Cartuja was still 30 degrees when this clash kicked off at 9pm local time.
Security around the ground was also red-hot with Spain’s  King Felipe watching from the stands.

The result leaves the whole group open following Slovakia’s surprise win over PolandCredit: EPA
The monarch saw his nation start the brighter with Dani Olmo blazing their first real chance over the bar from inside the area in the sixth minute after the Swedes had failed to clear a corner.
Leipzig star Olmo then had a close-range header from Koke’s delicious cross brilliantly kept out by the left palm of Sweden’s Everton stopper Robin Olsen – when a goal looked a certainty.
Swedish fans, who had been loud all day in every sense as they sat outside the local bars and cafes dressed in their yellow shirts, were reduced to an uneasy silence as their heroes struggled to get a foot on the ball let alone a foothold in the game.
You could hear a collective Scandic sigh of relief when Koke drilled a 23rd minute shot only inches wide following a dreadful gaffe from Mikael Lustig just outside his own six-yard box.
The Atletico ace was causing the Swedes all sorts of problems but sadly he could not get over the ball when he arrived perfectly on the end of Olmo’s centre, sending it way over the target.
Such was Spain’s superiority, Simon did not have a ‘save’ to make until he had to tip Sebastian Larsson’s overhit cross over the bar in the 36th minute – with the Swedes high-fiving their skipper like it was a genuine attempt on goal.

Alvaro Morata should have put the hosts ahead moments later but with only keeper Olsen to beat he sidefooted wide.
And it almost proved costly as Sweden, having offered nothing for almost the entire first half, nearly went into the internal ahead as Alexander Isak shrugged Ayermic Laporte before scuffing a shot which Marcos Llorente diverted the ball onto his own post before it rebounded into the arms of his keeper Simon.
When Morata dragged a shot wide from another favourable position at the start of the second half, the natives began to get restless.
Their mood hardly improved when another Sweden counter ended with Marcus Berg slicing the ball high and wide from just a few yards out in the 62nd minute.
It was the miss of the night – and that is saying something.
As the fourth official held up the board for six minutes of stoppage time, the Spanish armada turned into the Alamo as Gerard Moreno had a close-rage header saved by Olsen, who was then grateful to flop onto Pablo Sarabia’s weak effort.

Ex-Bayern striker Sandro Wagner admits Germany have a problem up front and need a striker like Harry Kane

IT IS not often Germany are looking over at an England camp with a tinge of jealousy.Four semi-final and two final appearances at the last seven major tournaments – including lifting the World Cup in 2014 – will tell you that.
Sandro Wagner thinks Germany have a problem up frontCredit: Getty – Contributor
Harry Kane with England boss Gareth Southgate after beating Croatia on SundayCredit: Rex
But in recent years there is one area, or perhaps one person, who has left the usually gold-tinted Germans green with envy: Harry Kane.
Former Germany and Bayern Munich striker Sandro Wagner explains: “We don’t have a No.9 like Harry Kane. We have Timo Werner, and other fast players. They are different players. That is the problem.
“In the next years we need to find someone to manage that.”
Gone are the days of top goalscorer Miroslav Klose, Jurgen Klinsmann and Gerd Muller firing Germany to final after final and trophy after trophy.
That challenge currently lies with Chelsea’s Werner – a player who is expected to have a similar impact that Kane has when he dons a Three Lions shirt, or any shirt for that matter.
But Werner has instead been singled out for criticism over his lack of ruthlessness in front of goal last season – a trait German fans will simply never accept.
Wagner, who saw Werner up close in national team squads before his retirement in 2018, is far more sympathetic to his current struggles.
He said: “Even in Germany he got criticised. Since he has turned professional he got criticised and it was not always easy for him.
“I played alongside him in the national team and he is a very good person. Not someone who speaks a lot or makes a lot of loud words in the media. He is very quiet.
Timo Werner trains with the Germany team as they prepare for their opener against FranceCredit: AFP
“And on the field you see that he is not someone who would suit playing for Bayern. A team that has 90 per cent of the ball.
“That is not the best system for him, and that’s why he sometimes struggles in the national team.
“You saw with Chelsea in the Champions League final he is a very good player when the team plays deeper and hits on the counter attack.
“He needs space in behind the defence and when he doesn’t have space he has problems.
“He has had an okay season though, and many players who move to the Premier League have problems. It is a good education for him and he will be a better striker for it.”
Wagner believes Germany’s lack of options up top stems from an ineffective youth system, something the 33-year-old is passionate about as he steps into management, ending a career that included two Bundesliga titles and one Confederations Cup.
After rejecting several offers to become an assistant coach in the Bundesliga, Wagner is taking his licences while in charge of SpVgg Unterhaching’s U19s, and is also spending this summer as an expert pundit and co-commentator on ZDF for the Euros.
It is because of this that he has been dubbed the ‘new Jurgen Klopp’.

Wagner said: “I have had very good offers in Germany and a lot of conversations with many clubs but I think this is a good opportunity to work at a smaller club where I have to do everything.
“I want to be the complete coach with all the faces of my sport and of a person who can manage 20 to 30 people and that’s why I want to learn every single step.
“I am very hungry to have a good career.”
Asked what has gone wrong with the youth systems in Germany, Wagner explained: “We have too many people who are deciding how the youth play who have never played before.
“And they only train the youth team so they can fast track themselves into being a Bundesliga manager. They want to develop themselves and not the players.
“We have plans to change it and we want to develop players like Phil Foden, who at 13 was maybe not too strong and won’t win games but you see him become faster and stronger.
“You have to be able to see the future.”
Wagner’s admiration for English football continues when discussing his coaching idols, which include compatriots Klopp and Thomas Tuchel as well as Brendan Rodgers, and plans to one day join them in the Premier League.
What is it about Leicester boss Rodgers?: “Nobody counts on him to produce big things. He is an underrated manager and a classy man whop plays very good football.
“As a person, he does not act. If I can feel it when I am thousands of kilometres away from him, then his team will feel that every day every hour.”
And when asked about his own philosophy, he continued: “The first thing I want is winners. Every training session is a competition. We have to learn to win every day.
“The big players I played with like Frank Ribery and Michael Ballack. They are winners.”

This current German side arguably have lacked those sorts of winners since their disastrous group stage exit at the 2018 World Cup – a tournament Wagner was not picked for.
But Wagner is confident his beloved country – who take on reigning world champions France in their group opener on Tuesday – have the squad to return to the glory days.
He said: “Russia was a very bad hour for German football, how we presented our football culture.
“We have to make a good mentality from the first minute, even starting against the likes of France. We are Germany and we have to be ready to play football our way.
“We have Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels back. We have the best keeper in Manuel Neuer. We have good defenders in Niklas Sule and Antonio Rudiger.
“In midfield we have Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan. We also have Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane, Kai Havertz and Werner up front.
“I don’t know if France or England’s squad is that much better? The only target for this summer then is to win, nothing else.”
