Arsenal reject £13m Granit Xhaka transfer offer from Roma as ace leads Switzerland at Euro 2020

ARSENAL have rejected a bid from Roma for midfielder Granit Xhaka, according to reports.Roma boss Jose Mourinho is believed to have been keen on the Switzerland international since arriving in Italy.
Arsenal have reportedly knocked back Roma’s first offer for Granit Xhaka
Roma boss Jose Mourinho is believed to be keen on signing Xhaka
And now the Serie A club have acted on their interest by bidding £13million for Xhaka, report the BBC.
But the offer has fallen short of Arsenal’s evaluation of the 28-year-old, who is contracted until 2023.
Xhaka was signed for £35m in 2016 so the Gunners are unwilling to sell for such a low amount.
Now Roma will decide whether to increase their bid or turn their attention to Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, another player linked with a move to the Stadio Olimpico.
The Gunners are set for a big summer of change with Eddie Nketiah and Joe Willock also attracting transfer interest.
David Luiz has already departed along with eight other players, so Mikel Arteta has some recruitment work to do.
Yves Bissouma and Ruben Neves are two midfielders linked with a move to North London and could replace Xhaka if he does leave this summer.

    Royal Ascot special 🏇🎩

Xhaka has had a mixed career at the Emirates but has been a regular over the last five years, making 220 appearances in total.
He was made Arsenal captain by Unai Emery in 2019 but a high profile bust-up with the fans saw him lose that honour.
Xhaka will currently be focused on getting Switzerland through the Euro 2020 group stage, so may not be weighing up his club future just yet.

Meet the amazing mums behind England’s Euro 2020 stars helping inspire the likes of Rashford and Phillips to success

They say behind every great man is a great woman – and here are the supermums who raised their Three Lions star sons and put them on the path to glory. England’s Euro 2020 stars have often shared stories about their mothers – from their sacrifices helping them reach their potential to the love and support needed to prosper, Rashford, Phillips and Co have revealed how grateful they are.

    Raheem Sterling and Nadine
England’s hero against Croatia, Raheem spoke glowingly of his mum back in 2019 for giving him the confidence and self-esteem to overcome racist abuse he faces as a footballer.
She raised him alone after his father was murdered in Jamaica, and the family relocated to North West London.
Nadine, herself, was an inspiration for Raheem – she was a professional athlete for the Jamaican national athletics team.
In the past, the Manchester City winger has credited her for his running style.

    Kalvin Phillips and Lindsay
The Yorkshire Pirlo put in a star-performance against Croatia – laying on the assist for Sterling’s goal.
Growing up in Armley, West Leeds Phillips endured a tough childhood after his father went to prison.
Lindsay worked two jobs to support her family, sometimes skipping meals to make sure Kalvin, his two sisters and brother were well fed.
It was fitting Lindsay was there to see her son’s crowning moment.

    Marcus Rashford and Melanie
Rashford’s charitable nature, which saw him receive an MBE after campaigning for free school meals, can be traced back to mum Melanie, who he said gave him his morals.
Just like Lindsay Phillips, Melanie too skipped meals so Rashford and his siblings could eat.
As soon as Rashford hit the big time, he showed his gratitude by moving his mum to a stunning Manchester mansion.

    Tyrone Mings and Dawn
When the England centre back was a kid, he was forced to live in a homeless shelter with mum Dawn and his three sisters.
They shared two bunk beds and a sofa, with no means to survive.
In fact, Mings was so tight for money when he came through the ranks playing non-league football, he supplemented his income pulling pints at a local pub.
In 2015, he shared a heart-warming text exchange with his mum after he paid off all her debts.

    Jordan Pickford and Susan
Another mum who wouldn’t miss her son in action is Susan Pickford.
The retired school worker from Sunderland is regularly seen watching England’s No1 from the stands alongside Pickford’s wife Megan.
When Pickford would set off for training at Sunderland’s academy aged eight, she would pack his bags with Tupperware containers of chicken and pasta.
Amusingly, she once told him to grow up during a youth game after he had a tantrum and kicked a post in disgust over letting in a goal.

    Jack Grealish and Karen
It’s through mum, Karen that Jack might’ve got his football prowess from.

Billy Garraty also played for England too.

    Jude Bellingham and Denise
As champions of their son go, there are few more vocal than Denise.
The mum of teen sensation Jude regularly shares her son’s success on social media.
“One minute you’re a Kings Norton District Cup Year 7 winner and the next minute you’re a DFB-Pokal Champion,” she wrote on Twitter after his club Borussia Dortmund won the cup. “Well done son,” she added.
She also shared a stat when Bellingham became England’s youngest ever U21 star and goalscorer.

    Phil Foden and Claire
Claire has been praised in the past for keeping Phil’s feet on the ground since his meteoric rise to PFA Young Player of the Year and Manchester City star.
And she revealed how easy it was raising young Phil.
“He was the cheapest kid ever. Just get him a ball and he’d be happy,” she revealed.
“He didn’t care about anything else, games, toys, nothing, just a football.”

    Harry Kane and Kim
Kim travelled to Russia to watch her boy go on to win the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup.
And the proud mum was ever-present when he played for local team Ridgeway Rovers in Chingford, Essex on the touchline.
“We just want him to keep doing what he’s doing,” she once said.
“We are all football fans and a football family. We spend every weekend watching Harry, going round the country to see him.”

    Jordan Henderson and Liz
In Sunderland, Jordan’s mum Liz runs a company that provides a programme that keeps kids active.
As a youngster, she preached the importance of a balanced diet, as well as the benefits of early nights.
“She gives me a bit of stick, but my dad does, too,” Jordan once said.
“I will be indebted to them both for the rest of my life, and I try to make them as proud as possible every time I play.”

    Kyle Walker and Tracey
Admittedly, Tracey isn’t a fan of watching her son play in the flesh and prefers to watch on the TV.
However, when he was a kid playing youth football in Sheffield – she was always on hand to provide directions to games.
“My dad’s not the best on directions,’ Kyle said. “We’d go to matches on the team coach, but go back with our parents so that was when Dad and I got lost.
“We’d ring Mum and say: ‘Where are we? Can you help us get back?’ She’d reply, ‘Look for the M1!'”

    Harry Maguire and Zoe
Whenever Harry broke a window playing football outside, Zoe happily turned a blind eye.
A hairdresser by trade, she was quick to slaughter her son for turning up to an England training session with his football stuff in a bin bag.
Despite Harry’s superstar status, Zoe still makes sure he contributes around the house when he’s around.
“I still live a normal life,” Harry said. “I do jobs at home, stay as grounded as I can. Mum and Dad expect it. They don’t make excuses for me.”

    ROSSI READY TO RUMBLE
Hungary may be in the so-called group of death, but coach Marco Rossi is confident his men can pull off a shock.
He said: “We’ll do everything to push ourselves to the limit. We know who we’re up against.
“We’ll keep our feet on the ground, but, of course, we want to achieve our dreams. Dreaming is free, so we dream.
“Our dream remains between us, of course. We talk about it and want to live that dream. Let’s hope it continues during the Euros.”
Hungary play host in the Puskas Arena in front of a rare 61,000 capacity crowd, with life in Budapest back to normal for residents carrying immunity cards.
That’s after Viktor Orban, Hungary’s Prime Minister, defied the European Union to make use of vaccines available from Russia and China and accelerated the release of national lockdown regulations.
Hungary reached the last 16 of Euro 2016. In that tournament they played Portugal in the group phase in a 3-3 draw.

    FERREIRA: TIME TO SHINE
Former Portugal international Paulo Ferreira has stressed the importance of Fernando Santos’ side getting off to a winning start today.
Ex-Chelsea defender Ferreira, who won 62 caps for his country between 2002 and 2010 told 101 Great Goals: “It’s really important to start the competition well.
“We had that in Euros in2004 when we lost the first game against Greece and then we obviously had to push hard to win the next two games and get to the knock-out stage.
“This year it’s the same, we need to play well against Hungary and hope that France or Germany loses one of their games. It will be very important for us to win the first game so we can carry that confidence into the second game.
“It’s a tough group. Unfortunately, one of the big teams will lose out and I hope it won’t be Portugal.
“It’s a really, really tough group but we also can’t forget about Hungary because people just think about Portugal, France and Germany but you never know!
“You can be surprised because the Hungarian team have nothing to lose. They have the chance of playing against top players and they want to show up as they know all eyes are on the Euros.
“You need to respect Hungary as well as you never know what they can produce.”

    ALL EYES ON CR7
All eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo today.
A five-time Ballon d’Or winner, in his 19th year as a professional footballer, he netted 36 times for Juventus last season.
Ronaldo also scored 11 goals in Euro 2020 qualifying.
He’s looking to close in on the all-time top scoring record in men’s international football this month. He needs just six to surpass Iran’s Ali Daei, who sits on 109.

    TEAM NEWS
Portugal’s preparations were disrupted on Sunday when Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo tested positive for Covid-19 and was replaced in the squad by Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot.
There are nine Premier League players in the Portugal squad, including Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes, Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, Manchester City pair Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva and Wolves quartet Rui Patricio, Nelson Semedo, Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves.
The Hungary squad includes Bristol City midfielder Adam Nagy, while goalkeepers Peter Gulacsi and Adam Bogdan both had spells at Liverpool.
They saw Dominik Szoboszlai ruled out of the tournament, while wing-back Szilveszter Hangya also missed out through injury.
Hopes are likely to rest on the shoulders of striker and captain Adam Szalai, along with fellow Bundesliga forward Roland Sallai.

It’s safe to say Hungary fans are looking forward to today’s game…

    REPEAT OFFENDERS
Fernando Santos, who led Portugal to European Championship glory five years ago, believes his side can hold onto the trophy, as Spain did in 2012.
He said: “Portugal arrive to this competition the same way we did in 2016, with the same confidence and belief to achieve something important like in 2016, where we managed to do it, and now we are with the same confidence.
“Like in the past, we have what it takes to win again.
“Obviously, as contenders to win, if we don’t get through the group phase it will be a failure. But I don’t believe that will happen to Portugal.
“I think people have the right and are correct to demand that we do everything in our power to win, using our quality, organisation, commitment, and I believe we are prepared for that.
“Portugal have the ability to go toe-to-toe with any team that also has ambitions to win the tournament.”

3000 Finland fans were allowed into the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen for their Euro 2020 opener against Denmark.
    ENGLAND*
England will allow Scotland fans to attend the game against the Three Lions at Wembley.
However, this trip would not involve crossing a border and no exemption is set to apply to fans of Croatia and the Czech Republic from overseas.
The FA are also reportedly considering allowing fans of the semi-finalists and finalists attend games under a bubble arrangement.

The full-back tested positive for coronavirus on Saturday and is “doing well” after being placed in isolation.
The reigning European champions said: “In accordance with the COVID-19 protocol defined by UEFA before the Euro 2020 matches, all players and members of the entourage underwent RT-PCR tests on Saturday.

    HEND-ING THERE
Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has been ruled out for the rest of Euro 2020 due to a hip injury but Jose Mourinho still believes he will become a “phenomenal” player.
Mourinho told The Times: “I think they [England’s trio] are good goalkeepers. I don’t think they are phenomenal goalkeepers or, in Dean Henderson’s case, not yet phenomenal. When I say not yet, I say he will be.
“I met him at United when he was a kid and I always remember him asking me to go on loan. He was saying when I come back, I come back to be the No1.
“He told me that when he was the fourth choice. He is a kid with an incredible self-confidence and I think he is ready”
    WHAT’S ON
Today marks perhaps the most exciting day of the Euro 2020 group stage with the group of death in full action.
Underdogs Hungary, who had the misfortune of joining three of the tournament’s biggest favourites, will take on Portugal in one-and-a-half hours at the Puskas Arena.
And later tonight we will get to watch the most highly-anticipated game of the first round of fixtures.
Germany and France are going to collide in what promises to be a highly entertaining encounter
    ‘FREEDOM’
Paul Pogba says he has more ‘freedom’ with France than he does at Man Utd.
Speaking to L’Equipe, he said: “It’s true that at Juve it was different from Manchester United.
“We were already playing with three midfielders [at Juve], in 5-3-2. I had the freedom, I had to be in the box, to attack.
“It was an obligation. In Manchester, I have the freedom to go into the box, but the priority is to play and defend.
“We [France] play in 4-2-3-1, also a diamond. I am a little more in the transmission, in the construction.
“But I have more freedom than in Manchester to enter the box, to make runs forwards.
“At the same time, when you have Griezmann, Kylian, you don’t want to enter their spaces, you don’t need to.“I would like [at Manchester United] to play more offensive [laughs]. To score fifteen goals per season is what I would like.
“But Patrick [Vieira] said it, we must put ourselves at the service of the collective.
“In Manchester, as in blue, the collective will always come before the player.”

    ‘WE WERE CONFIDENT’
Scotland captain Andy Robertson said both the country and the team were confident heading into their group stage opener against the Czech Republic.
But the host nation fell to a 2-0 defeat with Schick getting on the scoresheet twice.
Robertson said: “It’s hard to put your finger on it just now. Everyone in the country wanted to get off to a good start.
“We were confident, excited, and it comes down to not taking our chances.
“You can’t say we’ve not created, we’ve had some really, really good chances that we should have done better with. If you do better on that, then it’s a different game.
“It’s a tough lesson for us that at the highest level, at the best tournaments, you have to take your chances. Czech Republic did that, we didn’t.”
    RON TOP
The legendary Cristiano Ronaldo is taking part in his 5th European Championships!
The football Icon has scored 104 goals for his country in 175 appearances.

    GERMANY TEAM GUIDE
Germany face France later on today in their Euro 2020 group stage opener!

    FAMILY FIRST
Rio Ferdinand believes Christian Eriksen is unlikely to play football again after his cardiac arrest.
The 29-year-old was resuscitated on the field during Denmark’s Euro 2020 defeat to Finland on Saturday.
Medics confirmed that he ‘was gone’ before being given CPR and shocked with a defibrillator.
Eriksen is now recovering in hospital and provided a positive update reassuring fans that he ‘is fine under the circumstances.’
His collapse left the footballing world in shock including BBC pundit Rio Ferdinand who spoke of his emotions seeing Eriksen fighting for his life.
Speaking on his Vibe With Five Youtube show, he said: “I don’t think he plays again, I’ve got to be honest.
“If I’m him I’m not thinking about that probably, I’d just want to be healthy for the sake of my family really.”

RICE: WEST HAM FORM GAVE ME FULL CONFIDENCE
West Ham midfielder Declan Rice has said that his fine form has given him full confidence for Euro 2020.
He said: “I did see the comments before the game (Croatia) and of course you don’t want to talk too much.
“You want to just go out on the field and show what you can do. I thought our gameplan was excellent.
“We – me, Mase [Mount] and Kalv [Phillips] – have been working on our distances and Mase and Kalv pressing and me sitting just behind them and allowing them to express themselves and having the freedom to do what they want and I think it worked really well on Sunday.”
Rice has taken confidence from his strong performance on Sunday in the win against Croatia.
He continued: “We knew we had to be at the top level and if I’d have had asked myself two years ago to go out there and perform at a high standard, of course I’d have gone out there and done it but maybe I’d have had some doubts.
“But on Sunday, in my mind, after the season I’ve had with West Ham and the performances I’ve had with England recently I had full confidence before the game that I could go out there and perform to a high standard and I think everyone did that.”
    GREALISH NOT TRAINING
Jack Grealish is not part of training with the rest of the England team today.
According to Sky Sports, Grealish is in the gym doing some work on his own – but it is unknown whether it is injury related.
Dean Henderson dropped out of the squad not long ago, hopefully Southgate isn’t handed another injury worry.
    BREAKING: HEND OF THE ROAD
Dean Henderson has been forced to WITHDRAW from England’s Euro 2020 squad with a hip injury.
Sheffield United stopper Aaron Ramsdale has been called-up as his replacement.
Henderson, 24, has returned to Manchester United after picking up a hip injury in training, with his Euros campaign over.
The Old Trafford stopper had been on the bench for the 1-0 win over Croatia.

    FRANCE TEAM GUIDE
France are the firm favourites to win this summer’s Euros, and they have the likes of Mbappe, Griezmann, Pogba and Kante to pull it off.
The French lost on home soil back in 2016 to Portugal in the final – a shock defeat.
Now, five years on and a World Cup under their belt from 2018, they’ll look to add a European Championship to the collection.

    GOOD LUCK, LENO
Arsenal wish their No1 goalkeeper good luck ahead of Germany’s group stage opener against France tonight.

    SHOULD NEV-ER HAPPEN
Gary Neville has blasted the decision to allow full crowds into the Wimbledon finals this summer.
The Manchester United legend let rip on Twitter after the plans were announced despite Boris Johnson’s decision to delay ‘Freedom Day’ until July 19.
Wembley will host half capacity 45,000 crowds for FOUR Euro 2020 games.
Euro matches have been officially declared Covid-19 vaccine ‘pilot events’.
This means fans who’ve been double jabbed for more than two weeks will be allowed to attend, along with un-vaccinated supporters who can show they’ve tested negative.
Wimbledon’s men’s and women’s finals at Centre Court could also be played at maximum capacity under the trial.
They would be the first events in 15 months to be packed to the rafters.
And the government is also in talks with F1 bosses at Silverstone about hosting next month’s British Grand Prix in front of a capacity 140,000 crowd.
But well-liked pundit Neville was furious when the news was announced.
The 46-year-old, referencing the latest advice to wedding attendees, tweeted: “Can’t dance at a wedding but can stuff strawberries and champagne down your neck at The All England Club packed with tens of thousands crammed like sardines in a tin.”

    GASCOIGNE BLONDE
Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka surprised his wife with his new hairstyle, and he shared her reaction to Instagram.
The midfielder is currently away on international duty with Switzerland.
And his new hairdo will make its debut when Switzerland takes on Italy tomorrow night.

    REDKNAPP ON TAKING THE KNEE
Former footballer and manager Harry Redknapp stands against all forms of racism.
But questions how long players will continue to take the knee.
Redknapp says he was ‘all for it early on’ but ‘now maybe we have to look somewhere else’.
Speaking to GB News, he said: “I don’t know how much longer we go with it (taking the knee).
“Anything that can eradicate racism out of sport I’m all for it, but…. I don’t know really, I hate it when there’s people booing it.
“It’s not a good way to start a football match or anything really, it shouldn’t happen.
“I think that’s totally wrong that they (fans) do that.
“I’ve been all for it early on, but maybe now we have to look somewhere else, and…. I don’t know how long we’re going to keep doing it for – it can’t go on forever can it.”

    HUNGARY TEAM GUIDE
Hungary face European champions Portugal today at 5pm, and they’re without key man Dominik Szoboszlai.

    PAU-ER PLAY
Manchester United centre-back Victor Lindelof won the man-of-the-match award after Sweden’s 0-0 draw against Spain.
The 26-year-old shone as his side held on for a draw in their Euro 2020 opener against a Spanish side including United defensive target Pau Torres who could replace Lindelof in the Red Devils’ starting XI.
Posting a picture of Lindelof with his star-of-the-match trophy after the game, the official Euro 2020 Twitter account wrote: “Excelled in the air, organised his defence and brought calm to proceedings.”
Many in the comments argued Sweden’s keeper Robin Olsen should have been given the award after making several key saves.
But Lindelof – who often gets stick from United fans – played very well as his country picked up a well earned point from arguably their toughest Group E fixture.

    HUNGARY FOR SUCCESS
A group of death and an injury to their best player before the tournament – Hungary are up against it at Euro 2020.
Marco Rossi’s underdog side will be without star man Dominik Szoboszlai when his team plays three semi-finalists from Euro 2016 in Group F.
According to transfermarket, the value of Hungary’s expected first XI for the tournament is a measly £47.5million.
The central European side still have a few notable names in Szoboszlai’s absence including his RB Leipzig team-mate Peter Gulacsi.
But the rest are made up of players from teams in the Hungarian league, the Slovakian first division and even Bristol City in the Championship.
And it is those men that will be tasked with competing against the £1.2BILLION worth of superstars at France, Germany and Portugal.

    SMILE!
Christian Eriksen has shared a photo from his hospital bed on Instagram.
And the Danish midfielder appears to be in good spirits, which is fantastic to see!
He captioned the post: “Hello everyone.
“Big thanks for your sweet and amazing greetings and messages from all around the world.
“It means a lot to me and my family. ♥️🙏
“I’m fine – under the circumstances. I still have to go through some examinations at the hospital, but I feel okay.
“Now, I will cheer on the boys on the Denmark team in the next matches. Play for all of Denmark 🇩🇰. Best, Christian.”

    HOLY SCHICK
Czech Republic striker Patrik Schick scored goal of the tournament so far yesterday.
And it’s hard to see how his halfway line strike can be topped…… maybe an Alisson-esque goal?
Ohhhhhhhhhh Schick😱🤪 I guess we have already the goal of the tournament ⚽🏆👏🏼 #EURO2020— Mesut Özil (@MesutOzil1088) June 14, 2021

    TODAY’S GAMES
There are two games to be played today and the focus is firmly on the ‘Group of death’, Group F.
Hungary take on defending champions Portugal in Budapest, with kick-off expected at 5pm.
And France take on Germany at the Allianz Arena, Germany at 8pm.
The expectation is that three teams will go through from this group, with one of France, Germany, or Portugal qualifying for the knockout stages as one of the best 3rd place teams.

Traumatised’ England fans relive Aston Villa supporter’s ‘horrific’ 20ft Wembley fall onto concrete at Euro 2020 match

TRAUMATISED England fans have relived an Aston Villa supporters “horrific” 20ft fall onto concrete from a stand at Wembley Stadium during a Euros match.Horrified witnesses saw the fan fall just before the Euro 2020 game between England and Croatia kicked off at 2pm on Sunday.

Witnesses saw the fan fall from this section of Wembley Stadium just before the England game kicked off

The man, known as Jon, is a Villa supporter who suffered two broken ankles, a broken femur and a fractured pelvis, his pals said.
A shocked football fan said he heard a “loud thud” when Jon hit the concrete right next to his seat just after the national anthem played.
The fan told The Sun Online: “I was traumatised and had to leave the stadium early.
“I felt sick, shaken, emotional, couldn’t watch the game afterwards, a steward consoled me in the forecourt at half time.
“Overall it was a horrific incident and even now I keep getting flashbacks, I haven’t slept much.”
He said it was a “miracle” that Jon didn’t land on someone sitting in the stands.
The fan also criticised what he claimed was a slow response from staff at the stadium after Jon’s plunge.
    “The stewards were a disgrace…
“It was a miracle he didn’t land on somebody or land on the other side of the railing which was concrete steps leading into the forecourt.
“The stewards were a disgrace… I believe somebody closer rushed to his attention and I scrambled around trying to find help via a steward,” he said.
“There was no urgency, I’m not sure how long it took for a paramedic to arrive but it seemed a long time.
“It was evident the stewards were not trained for such emergencies.
“Thankfully it looks like he is recovering in hospital. The most important thing is he’s alive, I feared much worse.”
The Sun has contacted the FA for comment about the allegations of a slow response.
    RECOVERING IN HOSPITAL
Jon was taken to hospital after his fall and has undergone a series of operations.
His friends told Birmingham Live that the man was trying to put a St George’s flag on the railings of the third tier at the stadium when he fell.
He is now recovering well, they said, and has received dozens of messages of support.
One said: “Horrible news, Let’s all pray for him. One of the Villa loyal.”
Another said: “I went to school with him, he’s such a lovely lad.”

An eyewitness told The Sun: “I saw him fall, it was horrific, he nearly landed on my feet. He bounced off the concrete in front of me.
“I thought the poor fella was dead. His leg was the wrong way round and there was blood everywhere.
“Everyone nearby was screaming at the stewards to get someone faster.
“He did seem to be down for a while before they got there, but personally I don’t think they could have got there much quicker.
“I just wanted to know if he was alive after. He definitely fell tying up the flag.”
Another supporter at the stadium said the fan fell directly in front of him – having plunged 20ft from the third level of the stadium onto the concrete on the second level.
The supporter who saw the fall told The Sun: “It was awful to witness.
“It happened after the national anthem but before the players took the knee, so probably one or two minutes before kick-off.
“He fell from the upper tier into 208 in the middle tier. When he fell an off-duty firefighter got to him within seconds.
“We were trying to get stewards and medical professionals on scene.”
The fan claimed it took at least five minutes for the man to receive any medical attention.
“The stewarding was absolutely awful, no urgency,” he said.
    ‘CRYING HIS EYES OUT’
An England fan told the Evening Standard: “We saw his legs go over the barrier and then he fell and hit the ground and didn’t move.
“It seemed to take staff ages to get to him. One guy near us who saw the whole thing was crying his eyes out.”
Another fan said: “I didn’t see it but spoke to some of the guys who did at half time. They were traumatised. He fell from the balcony towards the seats and the concrete.”
A Wembley Stadium spokesperson said on Sunday: “We can confirm that a spectator fell from the stands just after kick off in the match between England and Croatia at Wembley Stadium.
“The spectator was given on-site medical attention and was then taken to hospital in a serious condition.”
The spokesperson said UEFA was investigating the incident.
The Wembley spokesperson said: “We will continue to work with UEFA to ensure the matter is fully investigated and we are continuing to monitor the situation.”
There were 22,500 fans at the stadium to watch England win the game after a nail-biting first half that saw Phil Foden hit the post.
A loud roar rang out as Raheem Sterling scored the vital goal in the 57th minute.

Fans had been hoping England would get their revenge after Croatia’s goal in extra time of the semi-finals sent England packing at the 2018 World Cup.
Supporters inside Wembley erupted in cheers as they watched the Three Lions win their first-ever opening game.
They had earlier drowned out a small minority who booed at players taking the knee.
