Euro 2020: Scotland supporters find unofficial fan zone right next to Wembley despite Sadiq Khan’s warning not to travel

THE Tartan Army has secured an unofficial fanzone in the shadow of Wembley for our Euros showdown with England. Some 800 supporters will pack in to London’s Crystal Club for a nine-hour bash on Friday.

It comes after city chiefs failed to offer travelling hordes a spot to gather.
Sadiq Khan tonight repeated his appeal for ticketless Scotland fans to stay away from London — amid fears up to 20,000 could travel south for the Auld Enemy blockbuster.
The Tartan Army have secured just 2,600 briefs for the Wembley clash, but supporters’ chiefs estimate eight times as many could flood the UK capital.
But the traditional party spot Trafalgar Square is off-limits as it’s being used as a fanzone for local NHS workers — and no other outdoor locations have been set up for the travelling hordes.
Mr Khan said: “It is absolutely fantastic that Scotland are playing in their first international tournament for 23 years — and I cannot wait for Friday’s match.
“Scottish fans are renowned around the world for bringing a party atmosphere with them to the big tournaments.
The Crystal Club right next to Wembley will host 800 Scots fans
“But with Covid restrictions still in place on both sides of the border, the best thing for fans without tickets to the game or a safe place to watch is to enjoy the game from Scotland and not come to London.
“In an ideal world I would welcome the Tartan Army to London for this match with open arms.
“But with Covid cases increasing, and with so much at stake as we fight this awful virus, I’m afraid that it just cannot be this time.”
Backing the call, UK Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston added: “There is a real sense of excitement building for Friday’s game between Scotland and England.
Sadiq Khan has urged ticketless fans not to travel to LondonCredit: PA
“It’s going to be a historic moment for both teams, the fans lucky enough to be at Wembley Stadium and fans watching across the country.
“But we continue to advise fans without tickets to enjoy the match close to home and not travel to London unless you have somewhere already finalised to watch the game safely.”
All 32 trains departing Edinburgh and Glasgow for London are fully booked on Friday.
Thousands of others are expected to fly or drive south for the Euros showdown — the nations’ first meeting since a 2-2 draw at Hampden in June 2017.

Sven Lister, of the Rosyth Tartan Army supporters club in Fife, told of his fears at the lack of planning for a Scots invasion.
He said: “I reckon there will be about 20,000 or so turning out.
“It just worries me that they have not done anything.
“There’s going to be groups wandering, possibly not getting to see the football, which would cause trouble.”
The  Crystal Club will host live music, DJs, food and drink for the ticket-only bash starting at 2pm on Friday — six hours before kick-off.
The two-floor venue, which will stay open to 11pm, will be decked out in Saltires and Scots banners.
A spokesman for the club said: “We open pre-game and during the game we will  put it on TVs for the fans to watch.
“With the Covid rules, everyone will have to be seated. There will be waiters walking around taking orders and everything.
“How Wembley works now is we get assigned a team and we can only bring that team’s fans in. It’s purely Scottish fans.
“It’s mainly for people who have tickets for the match. We are right next to Wembley. There is a road separating us from the stadium. You can leave five minutes before kick-off and still make it on time.
“It’s somewhere to go before the game. We have done this before and only a few stay behind to watch the game.”
Asked if it was like a fanzone, he replied: “Kind of, yes.”

Scots-based organisers of the Crystal Club bash said the event was already sold out.
And they urged those attending to stick to the rules laid down by bosses at the sprawling 1,000sq ft party venue.
Ted Christopher, 67, said in an update: “This event is pre-sales only. There will be no cash entry on the day. Everyone going to the game must retain their ticket if they want re-entry after the game.
“Post game will be restricted to ticket holders only.
“But the game will be shown for those without match tickets and food will be available.”
The Scottish Government and Scottish FA have also asked fans not to travel to the Group D tie.
England defeated Croatia 1-0 in their opening match on Sunday.
Steve Clarke’s men slumped to a 2-0 loss against the Czech Republic 24 hours later at Hampden. More

France 1 Germany 0: Hummels own goal gives French tight victory as Mbappe and Benzema have goals ruled out

IT was always going to take something special to separate these two giants – but no-one expected quite the Humm-dinger which did so.And so much for German boss Joachim Low finally sleeping easy again at the progress his rebuilt Mannschaft has made.
Germany veteran Mats Hummels can’t adjust his feet quick enough as he puts through his own net for the France winnerCredit: AP

For the soon-to-depart gaffer will have nightmares about the goal that decided this heavyweight showdown every time he closes his eyes.
A comedy, tin-legged attempt to clear from the recalled Mats Hummels which instead flew into his own net and turned up the heat on Low and Co.
And you know that saying about how a manager stands or falls by his big decisions. Well you can chalk this one up as a definite backfire.
Hummels’ international career had ended after the horror show that was the 2018 World Cup, when he and Thomas Muller were told they were surplus to requirements.
Approaching the Euros, Low had a change of heart, both returned to the fold…and Hummels shot himself and a whole nation squarely in the foot.
He was actually on the scoresheet the last time these two met as well. Only that was in the right net, and the winner in a 2014 World Cup quarter-final.
Funny old game, eh? Well, at least it is if you’re not from Germany, anyway.
To be honest, though, as much as the winner itself was a scuffed, slapstick strike, France just about deserved it.
Defender Lucas Hernandez celebrates with France team-mate Antoine Griezmann after the own goal opener from Germany’s Mats HummelsCredit: AFP
Karim Benzema celebrates, only for his late goal to be ruled out for offsideCredit: Reuters
Indeed, if it hadn’t been denied by two hair’s-breadth offside calls, Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzeman would have been celebrating goals and it would have been a stroll.
Both just about correct, but boy it was close.
And for all the goal was hardly a memorable one, the brilliant vision and delivery from Paul Pogba to help tee it up certainly was.
Only he spotted Lucas Hernandez ghosting down the left and floated the perfect outside-of-the-boot pass into the space.
Hernandez drilled over the cross, Hummels got his legs in a right old mix and the ball arrowed off his shin into his own net.
Wunderbar for the French, blunderbar for the Germans.
It was a moment of redemption for Pogba, too, because minutes earlier he had risen unopposed to meet an Antoine Griezemann corner and somehow headed over from six yards.

Kylian Mbappe rounds off some sweet footwork with a goal that was also erased for offsideCredit: Reuters
It was a rare blip for the Manchester United midfielder, who was spraying passes around so impressively even Graeme Souness would have found it hard to put the boot in.
Then again, maybe not. And Pogba did dip noticeably after the break…although having said that everyone in a blue shirt did.
That was down in no small part to Germany finally getting their act together and realising it wasn’t illegal to pass to your own team-mates. They did precious little of it in the first half.
And if Adrian Rabiot had raised his head instead of having tunnel vision for the target, it would have been wrapped up before the men in white sorted themselves out.
Kylian Mbappe was denied by this sliding challenge from Mats Hummels, which left most of France screaming in vain for a penaltyCredit: AFP
    ELASTIC LEG
Kylian Mbappe sent Rabiot  haring clear down the left, but with Griezemann free and screaming for a pass, he chose to shoot and clipped the outside of the post.
The Germans off the hook, and the same again as they shortly after…this time thanks to a linesman’s flag. One that was, to be fair, pretty dead eye with its accuracy as well.
Not half as clinical as Mbappe, though, who – picked out by another stunning Pogba pass – curled a through a crowd of legs and in off Manuel Neuer’s far post.
Cue wild, yet very brief, French celebrations, as the PSG striker had strayed half a yard too far before Pogba’s ball.

At least there was no doubting he was onside when he gave Hummels a five yard start but shot through and looked for all the world like he was about to end any doubts.
Yet somehow Hummels, at 35 some 11 years older, stretched an elastic leg and just got studs on the ball before he pulled the trigger.
Mbappe felt it was a dead-cert penalty. So, in fairness, did all of France, but not referee Carlos Grande.
It mattered not, so we thought, when Pogba sent him scooting away again, he picked out Benzeman right in front and bang, game over.
Well actually not quite, as VAR official Juan Martinez decided Mbappe had again gone a split second early and Germany breathed again…they just couldn’t make the most of it.
So all in all the most disappointing of openings for Low. Yet still no reason to be too entirely downhearted.

They bossed large chunks of the second half and could mount a good case for deserving a share of it. Well that’s their argument and they’re sticking to it.
Yet what it does do is crank up the heat ahead of Saturday’s clash here in Munich with Portugal, Group F table-toppers after their opening game win.
With maybe even third place being good enough, it is not crisis point yet. But Germany cannot use that as a safety blanket.

England hero Raheem Sterling’s Euro 2020 winner is a poignant reminder that dreams can happen

RAHEEM STERLING has a tattoo of a young boy, with a ball in his hand, wearing the No 10 shirt and looking up at Wembley Stadium.Sterling grew up next to the building site which transformed into the new national ground.

Raheem Sterling strokes his winner against Croatia to cap his fizzing display against Croatia in England’s Euro 2020 openerCredit: PA
His house was tucked away in the nook of Neeld Crescent, meaning there were rarely any cars on the road and perfect conditions for a kickabout.
It was there that the glowing arches of the  spectacular modern Wembley were built — and also Sterling’s dreams.
On Sunday, the local hero was crowned king of his back garden with the winning goal over Croatia.
Gareth Southgate resisted the public  clamour to start Jack Grealish and instead opted for the Manchester City man.
I think we clearly have a boss who has trust in his players, despite countless fans and also some pundits questioning his choices.
For me, what was more important was the belief Sterling’s goal gave to the thousands of boys and girls playing in back gardens, council estates and school playgrounds in the hope of making it big.
It was a special moment for our country and you could see how much it meant to Sterling.
Alex Scott says Raheem Sterling is an inspiration to so manyCredit: Rex
But it was also a  poignant reminder that dreams can happen.
I went running yesterday morning and saw loads of young boys and girls playing football with their England shirts on.
It made me smile because it shows the effect players like Sterling can have on kids.
When I was a kid my   football journey began in a battered old cage that I played in every day in my Arsenal kit.
But my surroundings didn’t matter to me, I still celebrated every goal like I was at Wembley in front of thousands of England fans.
I dreamt of playing at the national stadium or just being there as a fan.
Singing the national anthem alongside real fans gives me goosebumps when I think back to my upbringing on a tough London estate.
I had to pinch myself when I was there for England’s Euros opener against Croatia and I will again when Southgate’s side face Scotland on Friday.
Singing the national anthem alongside real fans gives me goosebumps when I think back to my upbringing on a tough London estate.
And it’s special to see the Three Lions are finally being roared on by a crowd after a year behind closed doors.
Scotland skipper Andy Robertson, who led his team-mates out in Monday’s 2-0 loss to the Czech Republic at Hampden Park, was also living out a childhood dream.
Just five years ago at the start of his career, he was juggling playing for Queen’s Park with working full-time at Hampden Park answering the phones.

But now he is starring in Scotland’s first major tournament in 23 years and playing for  Liverpool.

Why was Clive Tyldesley bumped off ITV’s prime football commentary slot?

CLIVE TYLDESLEY, known as the voice of England football, was axed from his position as ITV’s Prime commentator last July after 22 years in the role. The 66-year-old spoke to the biggest ever British audience for a single game when the Three Lions lost to Croatia in the 2018 World Cup semi-final in front of 24.3million viewers.

Why was Clive Tyldesley bumped from his role?
The Radcliffe born broadcaster’s voice has provided the backdrop to many memorable Champions League nights, as well as World Cups, European Championships, England friendlies and FA Cups.
Although ITV have stood Tyldesley down from his previous role, he will still be in the commentary box in a supporting role for Euro 2020.
According to the Daily Mail, Tyldesley and ITV mutually agreed more than two years ago that his role would change at some point in 2020, because the broadcaster felt that this would be the right moment for a new leading voice.
The move away from ITV allowed Tyldesley to work for rival broadcasters throughout the 20/21 season including Amazon Prime Video.
Sam Matterface was in-turn announced as ITV’s new principal figure in place of Tyldesley for any future England games.
Tyldesley will be commentating for ITV at the Euro Championship
Tyldesley claimed he considered “storming out” of his meeting with ITV bosses after he was presented with the news.
However, after a change of heart, he realised he would still be able to cover top-tier matches and continue to fulfil his passion.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, he said: “I could have stormed out, but I thought, no I quite fancy commentating on France versus Italy.
“No more England, so it will be a slightly strange thing.
“Once the decision has been taken you have to absorb it, realise it’s not the end of the world. It’s nice if you’re missed a little bit.”
Tyldesley also opened up on his replacement, Matterface, insisting he holds no bad ties with his 43-year-old replacement.
He added: “I don’t think ITV replaced me with a younger man for the sake of that, I think they replaced me with a different kind of commentator.
“And even though I was shocked by the decision and didn’t agree with it, I can accept it, because Sam commentates in a different way.
“But when I hear that somebody as capable as Mark Pougatch has been replaced on the BBC by somebody who has got a younger voice, but broadcasts in the same way, only not as well, I can’t fathom that out at all. More

Cristiano Ronaldo outburst sees Coca-Cola lose $4BILLION in value as company responds to Portugal star

CRISTIANO RONALDO wiped $4BILLION off Coca-Cola’s market value after his press conference stunt on Monday. The Portuguese legend – who scored two late goals in a 3-0 win against Hungary – had told the watching world to ‘Drink Water!’ as he sat down to speak to the media.
Coca-Cola had $4billion wiped off their share value after Cristiano Ronaldo said ‘Drink water!’ at a press conference
Cristiano Ronaldo removed two bottles of Coke before the win over Hungary
Ronaldo, 36, has a famously strict diet
The Juventus forward had removed two bottles of the fizzy drink from the desk in front of him during his pre-match press conference ahead of their opening game win.
    Coca-Cola’s share price promptly dropped from $56.10 (£39.80) to $55.22 (£39.19).
At one point during the day 1.6 per cent of the company’s value had been wiped off – although there was a late recovery, with the price back up to $55.44 (£39.38) at closing.
Coke has since issued a statement in response to CR7’s actions, saying “everyone is entitled to their drink preferences” and that everyone has different “tastes and needs”.
A spokesperson added: “Players are offered water, alongside Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, on arrival at our press conferences.”
Ronaldo, 36, has a famously strict diet and avoids sugary foods, eating clean up to six times a day to maintain his incredible physique while he ages.
While still at Real Madrid, the club doctor said he had the body of a player ten years younger and could continue playing at the top level into his 40s.
While the drinks company were trying to save face on Tuesday, Ronaldo was his typical self on the pitch against Hungary.

It was the Cristiano Ronaldo show once again as the star made history in Portugal’s victory.
Hungary are next in action when they take on France at 2pm on Saturday, with Portugal against Germany following at 5pm.
Ronaldo now needs just four goals to become the all-time top scorer in men’s international football. You wouldn’t bet against him doing it this summer.

    DOWN BUT NOT DISHEARTENED
A few quotes coming out of the Hungary camp.
Goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi said: “With a little luck, we could have even scored a point. That would have been a great thing. We will try again on Saturday.”
Szabolcs Schon said: “My childhood dream of being able to enter the European Championship in front of 65,000 spectators came true.”
Attila Szalai added: “I’m disappointed because not much was missing to score. We worked well, this defeat is annoying. We fought hard, we slipped, we climbed.”

    G NEV – RONALDO OBSCENE
Gary Neville has been waxing lyrical about Cristiano Ronaldo on ITV.
The former Manchester United defender said: “It’s an obscene record – 106 goals for his country is absolutely ridiculous.
“He continues to beat individual record after individual record.
He wants to be the best player in the world and seen as one of the greatest of all-time in terms of scoring more goals than anyone and he’ll go and do it.
“His physical shape is absolutely incredible.
“He’s adapted from being someone who sprinted from the left wing or the right wing.
“Now he’s not doing as much running in games and he’s not as explosive but he’s just basically a poacher.
“You wouldn’t traditionally think of him as a centre-forward but he’s now a striker and a brilliant goalscorer. There are no words left for him really.”

Ronaldo doubled the lead from the spot two minutes later after Willi Orban pulled back Rafa Silva.
But Ronaldo still wasn’t done, dancing round the Hungary defence and Gulacsi to grab his second and Portugal’s third in injury time.

Hungary 0 Portugal 3: Cristiano Ronaldo becomes Euros highest scorer EVER with late double in nervy win

CRISTIANO RONALDO’S double made him the Euros’ all-time record scorer as holders Portugal stung unlucky minnows Hungary with a late triple.Ronaldo bagged an 87th-minutepenalty and a glorious stoppage-time clincher to total 11 strikes in European Championship tournaments, two more than French midfield magician Michel Platini.

Raphael Guerreiro had only bundled Portugal ahead on 83 minutes to break the hearts of 61,000 in Budapest.
That was also cruel on a hard-working Hungary side who until then had looked strong value for a draw in this Group of Death opener.
Ronaldo’s history-making also covered up for his amazing miss earlier on.
The Juventus frontman, 36, skied a delightful cross from Bruno Fernandes over the bar, then held his heads in shock and embarrassment.
Only Spain a decade ago have successfully retained a Euros crown.
And Portugal started with six of the Euro 2016 winners in their team for this Group F opener at the Puskas Arena, a ground used by Liverpool and Manchester City for Champions League matches due to coronavirus restrictions.

Portugal’s firepower was vastly superior to their hosts but for so long their big names fluffed their lines.
Ronaldo was furious when Diogo Jota opted to shoot rather than passearly on.
And while the Liverpool forward later saw a shot on the turn also saved by goalkeeper Gulacsi – himself a former Red – Ronaldo’s efforts were arguably worse.
He toe-ended a volley into Gulacsi, only to then be flagged offside, and then flicked a header wide.
But the most glaring miss saw him blaze over unmarked from six yards after Fernandes’ delicate right-footed centre from the left.
Hungary focused so much on keeping out their opponents out that their own chances were limited, the best seeing Adam Szalai’s weak header easily caught by Rui Patricio.

Gulacsi saved a Pepe header at the start of the second half and then tipped a swerving, low drive from Fernandes around a post.
And although Hungary’s defensive organisation was not the slickest, it was good enough to raise Portugal’s frustration levels.
Substitute Szabolcs Schon even thought he had snatched an historic victory 10 minutes from time when he cut in from the right to beat Patricio at his near post – but a late offside flag was confirmed by VAR to cut short celebrations.
Brief joy then turned to a blitz of despair as Portugal struck twice in eight minutes, Ronaldo as so often, but this time belatedly, snatching the limelight and glory.

Watch Cristiano Ronaldo fume at Portugal team-mate Diogo Jota as he ignores superstar in Hungary clash

CRISTIANO RONALDO raged at his Portugal team-mate Diogo Jota in the first half against Hungary. The Liverpool forward burst through on goal before striking a left footed effort at goal which was well saved by Peter Gulacsi.

Cristiano Ronaldo fumed at Diogo Jota but missed a great chance of his own before scoring twice in a 3-0 win
Ronaldo was in a brilliant position to score himself however, and he fumed at his team-mate for not passing him the ball.
CR7 was unmarked in the penalty area and was better placed than Jota to score.
He would have had time to pick his spot so he struggled to contain his outrage after not receiving the ball, which was understandable.
But later in the half Ronaldo was presented with a brilliant opportunity to open the scoring.
Bruno Fernandes’ low cross found the striker just six yards from goal, with Jota dummying the ball to present Ronaldo with the chance.
The Juventus star blazed the ball over the crossbar in a rather disappointing fashion.
In Ronaldo’s defence he was running onto the ball and met it at its highest point, but a player of his quality should have scored with ease.
Portugal dominated proceedings against Hungary but the score was level at half-time.

Jota almost opened the scoring a second time but his turn and swivel was well saved by Gulacsi, who frustrated the Portuguese attack.
Portugal went on to win the game but it took a long time – and a huge slice of luck – to unlock the stubborn Hungarians.
Raphael Guerreiro opened the scoring with just six minutes to play thanks to a massive deflection.
Then Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in the closing stages to secure a far-from-comfortable 3-0 win.
His first came from the penalty spot but his second saw him roll into an empty net after great team play and a brilliant feint around Gulacsi.
The two goals meant he is now the highest scorer in Euros tournament history with 11 – and is now just four away from breaking Ali Daei’s all-time international goals record.
