Euro 2020: France abandon plans to take the ‘divisive’ knee before clash with Germany

France had planned to go down on one knee before Tuesday’s game against Germany in Munich, which they won 1-0.
But players were troubled by arguments in the media before the game, so decided to abandon the gesture.
“It was a collective decision,” said Hugo Lloris, the France captain who also plays for Tottenham Hotspur.
Discussing taking the knee, Lloris said that it was supported by all Premiership clubs, but this was not the case in the UEFA-organised Euro 2020.
“We assume that if we have to do it, all the nations must do it with the support of UEFA,’ said Lloris.
“This is the case in Premier League, where the movement is united. In this competition, it is less the case.

“This does not mean that we do not support the cause, we especially do not want racism in our sport and in society.”
Another France squad member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: ‘The truth is that players were concerned about the fierce reaction to the gesture, and felt that it was dividing more than uniting.’
Far-right politicians in France have been critical of the knee taking, saying it was deliberately provocative.

Italy 3 Switzerland 0: Watch Manuel Locatelli hit stunning double as Italians put Euro 2020 rivals on notice

Dapper on the touchline and with more swagger on the pitch than ever seen in Italy – it’s going to take something special to beat this lot.The first team through to the last-16, the Azzurri turned on the style again to breeze past Switzerland.
Italy sent out a stern warning to their Euros rivals by beating Switzerland 3-0Credit: AFP

Manuel Locatelli’s brace – his first ever double as a new hero was anointed in the Eternal City of Rome – and Ciro Immobile made it a perfect two from two.
Both of the Sassuolo midfielder’s were absolute peaches, and you can see why Pep Guardiola and Manchester City head a long list of admirers.
Coach Roberto Mancini’s cool clobber has caught the eye on the touchline in a way only Italians can.
And the ex-City boss has ripped up the nation’s rulebook built over decades, transforming an often slow, defensive side into anything but.
Fun, full of flair, attack, attack, attack – these are certainly strange times.
The 2016 version scored just four goals before going out in the quarter finals, whereas Mancini’s boys have already bagged six.
But in a perfect marriage of style and substance, they remain as dogged at the back as ever, making it 31 goals scored – and 16 hours – without conceding.

As much as they love to fly forward, from front to back they press, harry and chase like there is no tomorrow.
The only dampener was an early injury to skipper Giorgio Chiellini, with the veteran defender going off feeling his hamstring.
But with qualification sealed, the 36-year-old has nine days to try and rest up and go again.
Plenty of changes are likely for the final group game against Wales on Sunday, while Switzerland – on one point – have to beat Turkey to stand a chance.
As always, the Italian players got the pulses racing with a rousing national anthem in front of an expectant crowd at the Stadio Olimpico.
And it was full-throttle stuff from the off as the hosts carried on from where they left off after smashing Turkey.
Left-back Leonardo Spinazzola was a constant menace then and was at it again early doors, crossing beautifully only for Ciro Immobile to spoon a free header over.

Chiellini had them ahead 19 minutes in from a corner but VAR intervened and spotted a handball before he sent the crowd wild.
Moments later there was a hint of unease when the warhorse handed over his captain’s armband and left the pitch with a hamstring problem.
But a minute after they had their goal, and what a thing of beauty it was.
Manuel Locatelli started it with a raking ball out to Sassuolo team-mate Domenico Berardi on the right.
Berardi then charged to the box and did his man all ends up before sweeping across the six-yard box for the onrushing Locatelli to sweep home.
It all looked a breeze for the Italians, picking their time to turn it on against the meek Swiss.
Lorenzo Insigne had one headed off the line, Spinazzola poked just wide, and the writing looked on the wall long before the break.

And a half-time rethink hardly did Switzerland any favours, with Locatelli doubling the lead after 52 minutes.
Another stunner, the ball was worked to the midfielder on the edge of the box.
Under no pressure, he took one touch to sort himself before unleashing a venomous left-footed drive into the bottom corner.
Keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was a bystander for the first hour, but when finally called into action was up to task, getting down to block Steven Zuber’s near post shot.
And Italy made it 3-0 for the second game running – having never managed it in the Euros before – late on when Immobile fired home from 20 yards.

Who can England play in last 16 at Euro 2020?

ENGLAND will be bidding to end a 55-year wait for silverware in this summer’s European Championships. In each group, the top two qualify for the knockout stages but similarly to Euro 2016, four of the six best third-placed teams will also join the list of teams vying for the chance to progress further in the competition.
Gareth Southgate will be hoping to get England off to a winning start vs CroatiaCredit: AFP
England will kick-start their campaign in-front of 22,500 fans at Wembley this Sunday as they take on their World Cup semi-final nemesis in Croatia, before a fiery Friday night clash with rivals Scotland.
The Three Lions will then conclude their set of group games against the Czech Republic on June 22.
Who could England play in the last-16?
England have been slashed firm favorites to top their group (group D) and come out with three wins from three.
However, whoever finishes top of group D, will face either Germany, Hungary, France or current holders Portugal from group F, dubbed the ‘group of death’.

Essentially winners of group D will play the second placed finishers from group F and if England win their group as the bookies have predicted – they will most likely be matched in a bumper round of 16 tie.
However, if England finish runners-up in their group, they would be drawn against the second in Group E.
Group E consists of three-time winners Spain, Sweden, Slovakia and Poland – with the Spaniards tipped favorites to progress as group winners.
If England finish as one of the third placed-best teams, they would face the winners of Group C, B or E.
Group C is made up of Netherlands, Ukraine, Austria and North Macedonia, whilst group B features Denmark, Finland, Belgium and Russia.

In the last edition of the Euro championships, held in 2016, Slovakia, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and eventual winners Portugal all progressed to the knockout stages as the best third-placed teams.
On Portugal’s way to triumph, Fernando Santos’ side failed to win a single game in their group, drawing all three.
If England are to go through as one of the best third-placed teams, they would essentially need to win one and draw one, based on the previous tournament.

Recuperating Eriksen, 29, will watch the game from a hospital bed as he recovers from a horrifying cardiac arrest.
Belgium forward Lukaku admits he was in tears as he watched Eriksen fight for his life on the pitch during Denmark’s Group B opener against Finland.
And now Lukaku, 28, is ready to take a moment during the clash on Thursday to honour the Danes’ No 10.
Lukaku, who scored twice in Belgium’s opening 3-0 win over Russia, said: “We will kick the ball out and stop playing in the tenth minute to applaud and as a salute for him. This is the most important thing.
“I want to go and see Christian in hospital. I will send Christian a message after the game, but right now I need to give him some time with his family.”
Roberto Martinez is also fully behind taking time out of their game to honour Eriksen — and says his Belgium players may also commemorate him pre-match too.
But the Red Devils boss says after the tenth minute, the focus will return to winning the game — which could see them qualify for the knockout stages.
Martinez said: “There is a real intention to show our well wishes towards Christian.

Christian Eriksen’s life was saved by the fast reactions of team-mates and medics

“The uncertainty when the incident happened was tough for our players who have shared dressing rooms with him.
“Once we got the good news that he reacted positively, now it is almost a celebration. But then the game needs to be played and it’s an important game.
“The players will know the importance and what is at stake, and that focus will shift quickly — but we should still send a big message.”

Inspiring moment Man Utd star Paul Pogba tells mum ‘we will get the cup’ after France’s Euro 2020 win over Germany

PAUL POGBA hopped into the stands to promise his mum France will win Euro 2020 in inspiring footage after they beat Germany 1-0.The Manchester United midfielder was bare-topped as he greeted his family and gave mum Yeo Moriba his shirt following his man-of-the-match performance.
Franche hero had a rousing message for his family after beating Germany

It was suggested Pogba could have breached Uefa’s strict coronavirus rules by entering the fans’ area at Munich’s Allianz Arena.
But the clip appears to show the bare-topped 28-year-old only with his family.
Jubilant Pogba could be heard saying: “It’s not over. We will get the cup.”
The former Juventus star – along Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante – dominated the clash for the tournament favourites.
And it was Pogba’s sweet pass that teed up Lucas Hernandez for the match-deciding cross on 20 minutes.
Recalled Germany defender Mats Hummel turned the ball into his own net for the only goal.
Pogba, though, was also caught up in one of the most bizarre moments of Euro 20202 so far.
Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger appeared to nibble at Pogba’s back – but the exchange went unpunished by match officials and Uefa.
Pogba said: “It was nothing big. You saw the television pictures and it is all over now, in the past.

“He nibbled a little bit and I felt it so I told the ref but I am not crying for a yellow or a red card.
“Me and Toni have known each other for a long time and I just want to play football.
“He has not received any card and I don’t want him suspended because of that situation. We hugged at the end and it is over.”
Rudiger also explained he and Pogba had spoken after the match and cleared the air.
