    THAT’S A WRAP
Thanks for joining us this evening, for a spot of bedtime reading, here’s our match report.
We’ll be back tomorrow for plenty more football, including the BIG game!
    TABLE TALK
The Netherlands progress to the knockout stages after picking up six points from their opening two games.
It’s all still to play for, for Ukraine and Austria.

    A PIECE OF DEPAY
Memphis Depay had moments of magic today, but Jimmy Flloyd Hasselbaink believes he needs to do more.
The former Dutch player said: “He takes the penalty really well, but if they want to progress and go further he needs to play better.
“He needs to do a lot more.
“He needs to be more the number ten and carry them.”
Here’s a clear-cut chance he missed this evening.

    DANGEROUS DUMFRIES
The 25-year-old bagged two goals in his first two European championship games for Holland.
The first to do it since Ruud van Nistelrooy.
2 – Denzel Dumfries is the second player ever to score in his first two European Championship games for the Netherlands, after Ruud van Nistelrooy. Delighted. pic.twitter.com/t5WLEvEfZZ— OptaJohan (@OptaJohan) June 17, 2021

    COMFORTABLY THROUGH
Holland are through to the round of 16 despite playing in cruise control which will no-doubt make Austria feel worse.
Speaking after the game on the BBC, Alan Shearer said:: “They made Austria look very average and I don’t think that’s a great Dutch side, the way Austria set up it seemed like they were there to be beaten.
“Austria played that ridiculous high line so it was only a matter of time before they got punished – they were poor this evening.”
    FT: HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    93. Incredibly Wijnaldum holds onto the ball on both sides of the box, despite real pressure from Hinteregger.
His fancy footwork ensured he escaped the Austrian’s clutches, but his subsequent pass gave the ball away.
    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    90. Four additional minutes in Amsterdam.
    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    89. De Ligt has only just recovered from a groin strain and seems to be limping.
The Dutch team will be pleased that it only appears to be cramp and in an excellent display of sportsmanship it’s an Austrian player who helps him stretch it out.
    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    87. Lazaro whips a ball into the box well, from the right, destined for Sabitzer
But De Ligt is up to clear it, again.
    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    85. Just a few minutes away from securing their spot in the round of 16 and Netherlands are refusing to give Austria so much as a sniff in their box.
Wijnaldum sparks their counter and once again Austria struggle to contain them.
    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    83. De Jong still appears to have plenty in his legs as he works the ball down through his half to pick out Wijnaldum deep in Austria’s half.
    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    83. Final changes for Austria, as Lienhart is on for Dragovic.
While Onisiwo replaces Schlager who had a decent game.
    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    82. Lainer whips in a dangerous cross from the right, as Austria enjoy a spell of possession.
It’s met by De Ligt who nods it away, but only so far as Schlager on the left.
    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    80. Schlager hasn’t stopped for Austria in midfield today, but he hasn’t been given any time near goal by Holland’s back three.
Alaba bursts into life on the left and pulls the trigger from about 25 yards out.
He aims for the far post and is only inches away- why hasn’t he been playing there all evening?!
    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    78. Wijnaldum is applying pressure in midfield, he hustles Sabitzer off the ball before he can do anything with it.
Could Austria have done any better with Arnautovic and his attacking threat? He’s let his team down this evening by his antics in the last game.
    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    76. There’s a lot to do in the last 14 minutes, but Austria aren’t giving up.
Holland, however, are denying them space and time on the ball.
    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    75. Another substitution for Holland.
     Gravenberch replaces De Roon,
    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    74. Here’s Dumfries goal for your viewing pleasure.

    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
Dumfries was incredibly calm in front of goal as he all-but wrapped up the game.
Bachmann was desperately trying to appeal for offside, but it was clearly on and he received a booking for his protests.

    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    70. The Netherlands are firmly in control and are in defensively in cruise control.
They do have a slight scare as a miscommunication at the back sees the ball roll just by their post- but Austria are too slow to pounce.
    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    69. Austria try to respond to going two down as they make another substitution.
    Baumgartner is replaced by Lazaro.
    HOLLAND 2-0 AUSTRIA
    66. Depay spots a gap as Austria’s high line costs them.
A lovely lob over the top of Austria’s back line picks out Malen who races towards goal.
With the keeper running off his line, towards him in the centre of the box, he calmly squares the ball to Dumfries.
The ever-willing Dumfries pokes the ball in to the back of the net, calm as you like.
    GOOOOAL
DUMFRIES PERFECTLY GIFTS HIS SIDE A SECOND

    HOLLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    63. Holland react as Ake is on for Blind.
    And Malen replaces Weghorst
Wijndal is the third substitution, he comes on for Van Aanholt.

Euro 2020: England skipper Harry Kane says his team can beat Scotland and go on to win the tournament

ENGLAND  skipper Harry Kane last night said they can beat Scotland on Friday evening — and then go on to win the Euros. The Three Lions striker, 27, believes they have “a great opportunity” to lift the trophy on home soil  — while cooler temperatures at Wembley tonight  will be a relief.

Kane revealed it was a childhood dream to lead England to its first major trophy since 1966.
He said: “Of course we believe we can win it. We also understand it hasn’t been done for our country for a long time and there’s a lot of hard work along the, hopefully, seven games that we play.
“From my point of view, of course it’s been a dream since I was a kid to win a tournament and lift a trophy with England and to have that opportunity now is exciting.”
He added: “It’s very rare to have a home tournament and for me personally this is as close as it’s going to get. We’ve got to try to use that to our advantage.”

The side roasted in last Sunday afternoon’s 1-0 win over Croatia, but Kane said of tonight’s cooler  conditions: “It will be easier in that aspect.  It was a tough game at 2pm, it felt about 40 degrees on that pitch but I thought we handled that well. It will be nice to play at 8pm in the evening.”
England and Tartan Army supporters  are braced for a blockbuster clash between neighbours, and Kane acknowledged its importance.
He said: “We know what it means to represent England and play Scotland. We will try and use those feelings for our advantage.”
Kane scored a stoppage-time leveller against Scotland in a World Cup qualifier at Hampden in 2017 — his first game as captain.
A strong Scottish performance went unrewarded against the Czech Republic after they were denied on several occasions by the Czech’s impressive keeperCredit: EPA
He recalled: “We went 1-0 up and felt fairly comfortable. Then, all of a sudden, to go 2-1 behind with two great free-kicks was a kick in the teeth, really. The atmosphere that day was incredible, the stadium was going crazy. I thought we showed great resilience to go and get an equaliser after all of that had happened. That was a special occasion for me.”
But he said it was important to stay calm tonight in what promises to be an equally  frenzied atmosphere. He went on: “It is going to be a tough game.
“There has been a lot of build-up around it. But it is our second game at a major tournament and our focus is to try to win and make sure we try to qualify  and give ourselves as much of a chance of getting through to the next round as early as possible.”
He insisted: “We’ve got a great team, we’re in a good place.”
But there was no danger of underestimating Scotland, who lost their opening game 2-0 against the Czech Republic.
England skipper Kane also paid tribute to his former Spurs team-mate Christian Eriksen, who collapsed  in Denmark’s opening game last SaturdayCredit: AFP
He said: “We have huge respect for Scotland. They have a lot of great players, a lot of experienced players. Andy Robertson, for one, has won the Premier League, won the Champions League.”
Kane told how England wanted to  at least match their 2018 World Cup performance, when they reached the semi-finals.
He added: “I think that’s the aim. If we fell short of a semi-final, we’d all be disappointed as players, as a country and as staff as well.
“I think we have been moving in the right direction in the last three or four years so the next step is to go one step further, at least, and try and get into that final and hopefully try and win it.”

He also paid tribute to his former Spurs team-mate Christian Eriksen, who collapsed  in Denmark’s opening game last Saturday. He said: “It has been difficult, it has been really hard to watch.
“Thankfully Christian is alive. My wife has spoken to his wife and what I understand everything is going in a good way.
“Christian is in all of our hearts. It’s a reminder of how quickly things can change. We want to wish him well and I hope to see him soon personally.
“The most important thing is he’s getting better day by day and that he knows our thoughts are with him.” It is estimated that more than half the population of England and Scotland will watch  this evening’s game.  And England manager Gareth Southgate said the side were desperate to perform well for their  supporters.

He added: “For me, it’s always about creating those moments for our fans.
“There are two parts of the job as a manage — getting the best from the players and creating moments for the fans to enjoy.”
Pubs around the country will be showing the game, but one landlord has been warned he will be fined if punters cheer.
Before the Croatia match, Leon Kelly was visited by council officers  at his Level One bar in Darwen, Lancs. They told him he faced a £1,000 fine if supporters made any loud noises. He said: “I just sort of looked at them like, ‘What? How on earth am I supposed to do that?’.
“Do I pause when someone’s about to take a shot on goal and warn everyone to keep quiet?”

Councillors said his  marquee is “partially enclosed” so “singing and shouting” increases Covid risk.
Meanwhile, scientists also warned of fans having heart attacks during  stressful matches.
Cases rise by more than five per cent during big tournaments. If England reach the final, the risk of it being fatal will soar by up to 50 per cent, German researchers said.

Which teams have qualified for Euro 2020 knockout stages?

THE second round of Euro 2020 group fixtures is underway and teams are already booking their places in the last 16.And with some third placed teams able to progress this time around, all is not lost for sides who haven’t been successful in their opening matches.

Here’s all you need to know about the teams that have gone through so far.
Which teams have qualified for the Euro 2020 last 16?
The following teams have qualified for the Euro 2020 last 16:

    Italy
    Belgium
    Holland

The Italians followed up their 3-0 win over Turkey by hammering Switzerland by the same scoreline to make if through to the last 16.
They now take on Wales in Rome knowing a draw will be enough for them to top Group A.
And Belgium have joined them after seeing off Denmark 2-1 in Copenhagen, while Holland go through as Group C winners following victory over Austria.

Have Wales qualified for the Euro 2020 last 16?
Wales’ brilliant win over Turkey in Baku has put them on the verge of qualification.
However, even though they would need a mathematical miracle not to go through, they are not quite there yet.
To not go through, Wales would need to lose to Italy while Switzerland beat Turkey with at least a five-goal swing.
That would put the Welsh in third position, where they would need to wait for the results from other groups.
But with the four best third placed teams going through, the Dragons would still be in a strong position on four points.
In Euro 2016, Northern Ireland were the lowest ranked third placed team to qualify, with three points and a goal difference of zero. More

Netherlands 2 Austria 0: Dutch join Italy and Belgium in Euro 2020 last-16 but result knocks North Macedonia out

MEMPHIS DEPAY led the way as Holland announced they are back in the big time. The former Manchester United forward scored a penalty and made the second goal as the Dutch swept into the last 16 of Euro 2020 and won Group C with a game to spare.

Memphis Depay fired the Dutch ahead early on from the penalty spotCredit: Getty
And they will be overwhelming favourites to reach the quarter finals on Sunday week in Budapest with a favourable match against one of the best third place teams.
Holland failed to qualify for the last World Cup and Euro 2016. They lost every group game at Euro 2012.
But they are on the road to redemption after Depay inspired a win which should have been even more comfortable against feeble Austria.
Depay, 27, fell out of form and favour quickly during his disappointing two year spell at Manchester United and he won’t be remembered at Old Trafford for years to come.
But four years on he looks a more mature player on the pitch and as the more experienced of Holland’s two-pronged attack force is happy to take the lead from relative rookie Wout Weghorst.
He showed it by confidently drilling home the penalty which put his country in command with 11 minutes on the clock – the perfect start to a decisive game in front of a home crowd known to change opinion with the wind.
A quick VAR check was needed to decide whether Austria skipper David Alaba had trod on the foot of Denzel Dumfries in the box or just outside. There was no question it wasn’t a foul.
The Netherlands were in total control for the first half, limiting Austria to just one long range shot from way outside the box from Martin Hinteregger and that was more a sign of frustration than anything else.

BETTING SPECIAL: GET ENGLAND AT 50/1 OR SCOTLAND AT 120/1

How the top pundits of the two channels stack up against each other

Holland should have been home and hosed by half time and the worry for coach Frank de Boer is that the return of defender Matthijs de Ligt made them so much tighter at the back but they wasted chances to have the win sewn up so much earlier.
On 24 minutes Depay lashed a shot into the side netting with venom which suggested he was eager to continue his fruitful run of scoring at the moment.
Having missed the last two major tournaments, the Dutch are on a mission to rejoin the elite of European and World football.
Maybe it’s the burning desire to re-establish themselves at the top which caused the Barca-bound star to suddenly lose his cool in front of goal at the end of a sweeping Dutch move which deserved reward.
A huge diagonal ball was pumped forwards by Crystal Palace’s left back Patrick Van Aanholt to giant striker Wout Weghorst on the break into the Austrian box.
Depay gave the Dutch the lead after just 11 minutesCredit: Getty
Denzel Dumfries then doubled the advantage after being teed up by DepayCredit: Reuters
The Wolfsburg man’s international naivety showed when he opted to square the ball across the six yard box to Depay instead of blasting it into the back of the net.
Even more baffling was Depay’s fumble when he merely had to tap in for goal number two only to scuff his left foot shot and send the ball over the bar.
De Boer had his head in his hands as did Depay and the entire Dutch team because that would have been enough to put the sorry Austrians to bed and make the second half a cruise.
Depay has been deadly in orange recently – a penalty against Georgia in the final warm up game before the tournament and two against the Scots in a friendly, which included a last-minute, face saving equaliser in a 2-2 draw.
An earlier double against Gibraltar meant his confidence should not have been in question. Not exactly glittering opposition but then Austria did not look much better given their poor first half performance.
Holland have joined Italy and Belgium in the knockout stagesCredit: Getty
They rallied in the second half but hopes of a fightback ended when Depay hooked a superb pass over the high-line of Austria’s midfield in the 67th minute.
Sub Donyell Malen raced free into the box then squared for wing-back Denzel Dumfires to score his second goal in as many games at Euro 2020.
Austria have never progressed from the group stage in their two Euros appearances and now face a winner-takes-all showdown with Ukraine in their final group match for who goes through.
Victory for Holland means curtains for tournament newcomers North Macedonia who they play in a now meaningless match on Monday.

England defenders face ‘different test’ against Euro 2020 rivals Scotland, claims Martin Keown with Maguire set to play

ARSENAL legend Martin Keown believes Scotland will pose a physical threat to England’s centre-backs in their Euro 2020 clash. And reports suggest Harry Maguire will make his comeback from injury against the Auld enemy on Friday.
Ex-England defender Martin Keown reckons Scotland’s forwards will make life difficult for England’s centre-backsCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd
Harry Maguire, 28, is set to be in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man squad for the matchCredit: Getty
Speaking to BBC Sport, Keown said: “Scotland are capable of playing good football but they didn’t set up to do that against the Czech Republic. They were very direct.
“I was quite shocked and surprised how often Scotland went long in that game. Especially in the first half, every time the keeper David Marshall got it, he launched it.
“If they adopt that style again, it will be a different test for our centre-backs, and for Declan Rice in front of them, because it will be a throwback – more akin to the kind of game England manager Gareth Southgate might have faced as a player at club level rather than international level.”
And there’s a good chance Maguire, 28, will be one of those centre-backs as Gareth Southgate has confirmed the player will be involved in some capacity.

Whether that will be as a starter or just in 23-man squad remains to be seen.
The Manchester United captain hasn’t played since suffering an ankle injury in a Premier League match against Aston Villa last month.

BETTING SPECIAL: GET ENGLAND AT 50/1 OR SCOTLAND AT 120/1

England have the superior head-to-head record against Scotland

Keown also reckons Scotland’s biggest threat is their captain Andy Robertson down the left wing and has urged them to show more quality in the final third.
The former England defender is also hoping to see Arsenal star Kieran Tierney make his tournament debut after missing the Scots’ opener against Czech Republic through injury.
And the ex-Celtic defender may have to face Villa skipper Jack Grealish, with reports suggesting he will START at Wembley.

Scotland legend Derek Whyte has urged Steve Clarke’s side to beat England in London and become ‘legends’.
Scotland haven’t celebrated a victory over the English for nearly 22 years, although they did hold them to a 2-2 draw in their last meeting in June 2017.
The last time the two sides met at in a major tournament was at Euro ’96, when Paul Gascoigne scored an iconic goal in a 2-0 England win.
