Euros 2020 final will still be held at Wembley, says No10 after UEFA row

PLANS are still on track to host the Euros final at Wembley, Downing Street stressed today, amid a behind-the-scenes row over exempting visiting fans and footie chiefs from isolation.UEFA bosses want overseas spectators and VIPS to dodge the mandatory 10-day quarantine – and have reportedly threatened to move the match from Britain.

Tournament organisers are lobbying Government to allow supporters to swap isolation for a 24-hour stop-over with rigorous testing and bubbling.
Whitehall sources this morning said no final decision on exemptions have been made, and Wembley is committed to hosting July’s semi finals and final.
Downing Street said today: “No decisions have been taken. But we continue to look forward to putting on the semi-final, and final at Wembley, and we’re working closely with UEFA.”
PM Boris Johnson suggested some changes may be made to accomodate them and keep the peace.
Speaking to reporters earlier he said: “We will do what we have to do to keep the country safe from Covid, that will be our priority.
“We will be talking to UEFA about what we want and see if we can make some, some sensible accommodations, but the priority obviously has to be, has to public health.”
Ultimately, UEFA have the final say on where the game is played, and today suggested there’s an alternative stadium ready if they pull the plug on Wembley.
A statement said: “We are in discussions with the local authorities to try to allow fans of the participating teams to attend the matches, using a strict testing and bubble concept that would mean their stay in the UK would be less than 24 hours and their movements would be restricted to approved transport and venues only.
“We understand the pressures that the Government face and hope to be able to reach a satisfactory conclusion of our discussions on the matter.
“There is always a contingency plan but we are confident that the final week will be held in London.”
Abandoning Wembley would the devastate 45,000 fans set to fill the north-west London stadium to half-capacity.

The Times reports that Hungary has been eyed up as the back-up plan because of its relaxed border measures.
Most travellers to England have to undergo 10 days mandatory quarantine, with the option to test-to-release on day five.
Exempting overseas fans from this could go down like a cup of cold sick at a time when the tough controls are preventing millions of Brits from taking holidays.
Last month, ministers slapped down UEFA chiefs who demanded two thousand VIPs skip quarantine as the price for holding the Champions League Final in Britain.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden told MPs “they wanted to bring a large number of people to the match”.
He added: “The Government was unable to give an assurance that we would be willing to vary our quarantine rules in the way they wanted.
“People have made huge sacrifices for this. We would expect people entering the UK, except in very exceptional circumstances, to observe the quarantine.”
If ministers let chiefs and other foreign fans skip quarantine to attend the match, there will likely be a huge backlash from Brits.
Many thousands of people have to isolate when returning home from amber and red list countries thanks to the recently-introduced traffic light system.

But the 28-year-old remains a firm Three Lions supporter and decided to watch the opening game win in a Fan Park – loving every minute.
The Manchester United star said: “It’s crazy, you don’t realise until like you’re actually in it how much it means to everyone.
“Everyone’s watching the game and everyone’s in a beer garden, and the sun was out, the drinks are flying everywhere.
“You don’t realise how important it is to the whole nation, to be to be putting on that shirt and playing for your country
“It gives you a different, different perspective.  It’s crazy how many people really love football and want to be part of football.”
Despite missing out at the last moment, Lingard played in both England warm-up matches and continued to be a big personality around the squad.

That has carried on now he is on the outside and says he would not have it any other way.
Lingard added: “It’s my country at the end of the day. I support the boys, I’ve been with them for a long time, I know all the lads.
“I know what it’s like going to a major tournament and they’re going to need all the support that they can get – I’m always here to support.”

Hundreds of keen and rowdy football fans have packed Leicester Square in London this afternoon ahead of tonight’s game.
Some carried umbrellas or wore raincoats to protect themselves from the downpours hitting the capital but others braved the elements as they loudly sung and chanted together.
Fans draped in Scotland flags filled the square – setting the tone for tonight’s crunch clash.

⚽ ENGLAND vs SCOTLAND BETTING SPECIAL ⚽

Scottish fans made their voices heard yesterday as they overtook parks and landmarks in a boozy display, chanting: “We’ll destroy the English b******s”.
And the raucous behaviour has carried on today with some cheeky fans revealing what a true Scotsman wears under their kilt by baring their backsides.
Others have started letting off flares to choruses of “Yes sir I can boogie” – famously sung by the Scots team as they qualified for the Euros.
And England fans have already started making the pilgrimage to Wembley covered in damp St George’s flags.

The stormy weather hasn’t dampened anyone’s spirits with pubs already filled with the Tartan Army.
And London stations are packed with Scotland supporters spilling out of sold-out trains from Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Around 20,000 fans have made the trip across the border in a huge display of support for their team.
But Scotland have been allocated less than 3,000 tickets for the sellout 21,500 qualifier at Wembley.

The oldest fixture in international football is steeped in history – with the last time England took on the Scots in the Euros way back in 1996.
Gazza marked his winning goal with his infamous dentist chair celebration as the Three Lions went on to win 2-0.
Wembley historically hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for Scotland – with England beating the Auld Enemy 18 times in 32 games at the stadium.
The last time the two teams met at Wembley saw Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana and Gary Cahill steering England to a 3-0 win for the World Cup qualifier in 2016.
Scotland fans had been urged not to travel without tickets or having arranged a safe place to watch the game.

The Met Police were forced to issue a 48-hour dispersal order in central London yesterday allowing officers to remove troublemakers from the streets.
Chief Inspector Joe Stokoe, spokesperson for the Met’s policing operation during Euro 2020, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the Euros in London. People have waited a long time for this to take place and we know that everyone is very excited, so we ask members of the public to look after themselves and each other and enjoy the occasion safely and responsibly.
“Our officers are here to look after you so please speak to them if you have any concerns. Stay vigilant and report anything suspicious to police, and please be mindful of the weather too, which is not expected to be good.
“There will of course be people in London who won’t be watching the game and we urge you to consider those people and behave respectfully.
“London also remains in a public health crisis. There are government guidelines in place and we ask people to follow these and remain socially distanced.
“We have contingency plans to deal with any number of potential incidents as they arise but my message is clear: if you don’t have ticket to the matches, fan zone or officially booked into a pub, bar or club, please do not come to London – you could end up missing the game.”
Thousands of boozed-up fans wearing kilts and Scotland jerseys were chanting “we hate f***ing England”.
Others were seen jumping up onto the William Shakespeare fountain in Leicester Square while others partied in Hyde Park.
One naked Scottish fan was led away from his party in Hyde Park ahead of the match tonight.
Police confirmed a 25-year-old man was arrested for indecent exposure in Hyde Park but later cautioned and released.
And a second man was arrested for the attempted theft of a police officer’s hat, assault with intent of avoiding arrest and assault of emergency worker.
Scotland lost their first qualifier to the Czech Republic 2-0 on Monday, the day after England beat Croatia 1-0.

The teams last played competitively in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, with England winning 3-0 at Wembley and the teams drawing 2-2 at Hampden.
Scotland and England played each other in a friendly at the end of each season for decades.
But the traditional joust was scrapped over repeated crowd trouble.

Denmark reconvened at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium, just five days on from the horrific events that saw Eriksen, 29, suffer a cardiac arrest on the pitch against Finland.
Backed by a passionate crowd, his Danish team-mates provided a spirited performance – taking a second minute lead through Yussuf Poulson.
It was clearly more than just a goal for the Danes, who emotionally celebrated the opener.
Kevin De Bruyne came off the bench to turn the game, assisting Belgium’s equaliser and scoring a brilliant winner.
But that turnaround didn’t dampen Eriksen’s spirits.
From his hospital bed around 400 yards away, the former Spurs star sung his team-mates praises on WhatsApp.
Striker Braithwaite, who hit the bar late on, revealed: “Eriksen wrote in the Whatsapp group after the game, he said we had been fantastic, I read the text on my way to the dressing room.
“We had a great start, we proved to be mentally strong. We played for Christian and the whole country.

Christian Eriksen’s life was saved by the fast reactions of team-mates and medics

“We felt the whole stadium around us, it was amazing.”
Eriksen has reportedly undergone a surgery to fit a cardiac implant, after his collapse last weekend was caused by ‘rhythm disturbances’ in his heart.
No decisions have yet been made on whether he will be able to resume his career, although he is set to be discharged from hospital today.

Who is England vs Scotland referee Mateu Lahoz and how many tournaments has he officiated at?

    Who is Antonio Mateu Lahoz?
One of the games most eccentric and entertaining refs, Lahoz often rocks up to stadiums wearing rock-star sunglasses and a beaming grin.
Active since 1999, the Spaniard became Fifa-listed in 2011 and took charge of the World Cup 2014 qualifying games.
He’s a regular fixture in La Liga and has been accused in the past of favouring Real Madrid by some fans.
Lahoz has been a referee since 1999Credit: Getty – Contributor
Lahoz is also famous for handing out yellow cards for the slightest of confrontations while ignoring potentially dangerous challenges.
A bizarre showing in Italy’s World Cup qualifier defeat to Sweden saw him blasted on the internet, with one viewer ranting: “The referee in the game is far too bothered about being the centre of attention.”
Giving an insight into his style, Lahoz revealed: “For me, reading what is being said in the media in the lead up to a game is fundamental.
“I want to know how every player comes into the game, if there is pressure, if they have been accused of diving, how many bookings they have. I spend hours reading, watching videos and making notes on my next game.”Has he officiated at the European Championship before?
Mateu Lahoz made his European Championship debut by taking charge of Belgium’s 3-0 win over Russia in St Petersburg. More

Euro 2020 last 16 fixtures and dates: England can qualify tonight following Belgium, Holland and italy

THE Euro 2020 group stage is reaching squeaky bum time and some teams have already made it through. The Netherlands became the latest team to book their place in the last 16 by beating Austria 2-0 in Amsterdam.

England could face a tougher test if they win Group D than finish runners-upCredit: EPA
But the draw is complicated by the introduction of spots in the knockout stages for the four best third placed teams.
That means we may not know all the ties until the group stages are finished on Wednesday, June 23.
    Euro 2020 last 16 fixtures
    Saturday, June 26
    Italy/Wales/Switzerland vs Belgium/Russia/Finland/Denmark (5pm) – Amsterdam
    Italy/Wales vs Austria/Ukraine (8pm) – Wembley
    Sunday, June 27
    Netherlands vs 3rd place Group D/E/F (5pm) – Budapest
    Belgium/Finland vs 3rd place Group A/D/E/F (8pm) – Seville
    Monday, June 28
    Runner-up Group D vs Runner-up Group E (5pm) – Copenhagen
    Winner Group F vs 3rd place Group A/B/C (8pm) – Bucharest
    Tuesday, June 29
    Winner Group D vs Runner-up Group F (5pm) – Wembley
    Winner Group E vs 3rd Group A/B/C/D (8pm) – Hampden Park

Who can England play in the last 16?
England are in the interesting position of potentially earning an easier tie if they finish runners-up in Group D than if they win it.
Should England win the group, they will face the runners-up of Group F, containing Portugal, Germany, France and Hungary,
If England finish second, they will face the runners-up of Group E, containing Spain, Sweden, Slovakia and Poland.
However, winning the group gives England the advantage of playing every game at Wembley, except a quarter-final in Rome.
If England finish runners-up, they will head to Copenhagen for the last 16 before a quarter-final in St Petersburg.
Should England finish third, their last 16 opponent will depend on which teams go through in the other groups. More

Inside England’s ‘most patriotic’ street where ALL 88 homes show their support for the Three Lions

A STREET in Bristol claims to be the ‘most patriotic’ in England with ALL 88 homes showcasing their support for the Three Lions.Bunting of the St George’s flag is stretched across from every house on one side of Torrington Avenue to the other.

This street in Bristol is full of England flags
Bunting of the St George’s flag is stretched across from every house on one side of Torrington Avenue to the other
Kelly Perks and her son Timothy
The flags went up on Saturday on the street in South Bristol, with homeowners on the street getting actively involved.
Ladders were rested against each house, with the entire street working together to showcase their love for England ahead of their much-anticipated clash with rivals Scotland today.
The idea started before the 2010 World Cup when two women living on the street came up with an idea.
Ever since – as long as England have been involved in a major tournament – the road has been peppered with flags.
One of the two original organisers, who asked not to be named, said: “It was a couple of us who started the idea but then the whole street got involved.
“We were chatting and said: ‘why don’t we put some flags up?’
“It’s a real joint effort. Everyone chips in to buy them – sometimes they need replacing but we put them up during every tournament.”
Kelly Perks, who has lived on the street for 18 years, said everyone went berserk after Raheem Sterling sealed England’s victory over Croatia on Sunday.
The 40-year-old said: “When England scored against Croatia everyone rushed out.
“They were waving their flags and blowing their whistles. It’s the best street in England for fans.”

Ken Pickford (left) and Kevin Coyle on Torrington Avenue
Luke Burton and his family have only been on Torrington Avenue for a year and a half.
But the dad-of-four said the gigantic display of flags has brought the neighbours together.
“It’s amazing how we all come together,” the 33-year-old said.
“The street is always in the papers, everyone here is big England fans.
“You get good and bad streets – it’s the same everywhere – but all of us get on well.
“I can’t wait for the game on Friday, we’ll all definitely be watching it.

Another resident who has been on the street for 26 years said: “It took about two days for everyone to get the flags up.
“It’s nice to see everyone involved.”
Another resident said: “It’s become a real tradition, everyone loves it.”
