One in four England fans believe IT’S COMING HOME – but nearly two thirds fear Germany will dump us out of Euro 2020

ONE in four England fans think football is coming home this summer – but nearly TWO-THIRDS reckon a Germany KO is the most-likely scenario. The Three Lions rose to the top of Group D with 1-0 wins over Croatia and Czech Republic, while picking up a point against stubborn Scotland.
Nearly a quarter of SunSport readers think England will win Euro 2020 – but close to two-thirds say it’s a last-16 KO
Confidence will be high in Gareth Southgate’s squad after topping the group without conceding a single goal.
But clinching top spot means a last-16 tie with the Group of Death runners-up Germany.
England take on their bitter rivals on Tuesday, with kick-off 5pm.
And a staggering 58.5 per cent of more than 7,000 SunSport readers believe the Three Lions will LOSE against Germany to crash out at the last-16 stage.
Should England beat the Germans, they will take on the winner of Sweden vs Ukraine in the quarter-finals.
Only 1.8 per cent of readers reckon that will be England’s downfall, with 7.2 per cent believing the semi-final will be as far as Southgate will take his squad.
And while 7.9 per cent of supporters think we’re destined to lose in the final, there are still some optimistic fans out there.
A chunky 24.5 per cent of SunSport readers reckon England will go all the way and finally bring football home after 55 years of hurt.

England have played Germany SEVEN times in major tournaments down the years.
Bobby Moore and Co famously won the 1966 World Cup final at Wembley 4-2 after extra-time, but lost in the quarters 3-2 just four years later.
The two footballing powerhouses drew 0-0 in the second group stage at the 1982 World Cup, while England lost on penalties in the Italia 90 semis.
Current boss Southgate infamously missed in the Euro 96 shootout as Germany progressed to the final, before England got their revenge with 1-0 group stage win four years later.
Most-recently, England lost 4-1 in the last-16 of the 2010 World Cup, best-remembered for Frank Lampard’s controversially disallowed goal.

German fans fuming after they’re barred from Euro 2020 clash with England due to Covid rules

WHINING German fans threw a strop yesterday after learning they’ll be barred from the Euro 2020 clash with England due to Covid rules. But there was zero sympathy from Three Lions supporters as it came just 24 hours after Chancellor Angela Merkel tried to ban Brits from holiday sunbeds throughout Europe.

To make it to Tuesday’s Wembley showdown, fans of our old foes would have had to fly out of Germany yesterday to stand any chance of completing a five-day UK quarantine period.
They would also have the headache of sourcing hard-to-find tickets for the reduced capacity 45,000-seat game.
And they would then have to take even more time off work to quarantine for two weeks when they got home thanks to their nation’s draconian Covid crackdown on arrivals from the UK.
Earlier this week, Chancellor Merkel urged EU nations to make all arrivals from the UK quarantine — regardless of whether they are double-jabbed — to halt the spread of the Delta variant.

But England fan Graham Hartill, 50, from Dudley, West Mids, blasted: “They’re always first to the sunbeds on holiday and now they’re furious they can’t get first dibs on a seat at Wembley.
“They should stick to the rules and stay home like the vast majority of England fans are having to do.”
Newspaper Bild led the German moaning yesterday as it told their fans they would have to watch at home. Its report read: “Imagine Germany playing at Wembley Stadium — but no German fan is there live.
“Exactly this scenario threatens us on Tuesday. As of now, the national team has to forgo German support from the ranks.
Bukayo Saka and Kalvin Phillips are hoping to start for England in the huge match against GermanyCredit: Getty
“The current entry regulations make a trip to London almost impossible.”
As well as having to leave by yesterday, the German fans would have to get a negative Covid test tomorrow and another an hour before Tuesday’s 5pm kick-off.
Car mechanic Michael Mueller, 23, from Munich, who had planned to travel with baker pal Juergen Litz, 25, said: “It’s heartbreaking — neither of us can get that amount of time off.
“The Brits want us to quarantine too. No way can we get that kind of dispensation from work for a single game — so it’s the TV for us.”
Anton Schumacher, 30, from Cham in Bavaria, said: “The only Germans at Wembley will be those who live in the UK. I would have loved to have gone but Covid has stuffed us.”
Dirk Hoffman, 40, a trucker from Berlin, added: “Corona has come down on the side of the English. Our boys would have loved to see and hear us there, but it is what it is. Still, I think we’re going to win.”
There was zero sympathy from Three Lions supporters as it came just 24 hours after Chancellor Angela Merkel tried to ban Brits from holiday sunbeds throughout EuropeCredit: AP
But England fans were unconcerned by their rivals’ griping.
James Ceppi di Lecco, 37, of Blackheath, South East London, said last night: “It laughable that the Germans are moaning about getting to the game when they’re trying to stop us going on holiday.
“How can they complain when they can do just five days’ quarantine in our country and we have to do 14 in theirs when most Brits are now double-jabbed?”
Tony Stevens, 26, of Bermondsey, South London, told The Sun: “After the way they’ve behaved with trying to stop us from travelling abroad this summer, it does make you laugh.
“We’ll win on Tuesday and carry the boys over the lines.”
Also untroubled by the German fans’ woes, England’s Euro 2020 stars resumed training yesterday after being given a day off by boss Gareth Southgate following their 1-0 win over the Czech Republic.

But Arsenal ace Bukayo Saka, 19, still found time for a chat about his man-of-the-match heroics — chilling on a bean bag at their St George’s Park training camp in Burton, Staffs.
Flying winger Saka told online sports host Josh Denzel his phone was jammed with messages of congratulation after his brilliant Euros debut.
He said: “My phone was booming — I didn’t know where to start with replying. It was amazing — one of the best moments of my career and my life to step on to the Wembley pitch.”

Emile Heskey admits England’s 5-1 thrashing of Germany still fills him with joy… even if fans’ song isn’t the kindest

DO NOT be surprised to hear Emile Heskey’s name being sung at Wembley on Tuesday night. The Three Lions cult hero managed just seven goals in his 62 caps.
Emile Heskey grabbed himself a goal as England stuffed Germany 5-1 20 years agoCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd
It was a memorable night for the travelling England fans in MunichCredit: PA
But he entered England folklore when he made it 5-1 against Germany 20 years ago.
His old mucker Michael Owen had already scored a hat-trick, while Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard also blasted a banger.
But it is the memory of Heskey racing on to Paul Scholes’ pass and finding the corner, before celebrating with a DJ record-spin and a golf putt, that best summed up that mad mauling in Munich.
Supporters have chanted ‘Five one and even Heskey scored’ to the tune of the Village People’s Go West ever since and will no doubt power it out ahead of the last-16 clash with the Germans.
Heskey, 43, said: “Wherever I go in the world, I always bump into an England fan who will say they know exactly where they were when that game was being played.
“That just fills you with joy because it’s a memory that everyone cherishes and I was a part of for a whole nation.
“I did that 20 years ago and 20 years on they’re still chanting my name. It’s not a bad thing!”
That goal in 2001 immortalised Heskey in England’s footballing history.

A DVD was even made of the game, which the former Leicester and Liverpool striker has a copy of — although he claims he never watches it.
Gareth Southgate’s squad have a great opportunity to make themselves legends at these Euros, with their side of the draw about as kind as it gets.
First, they will have to beat Germany, who, despite some patchy recent form and an unconvincing group display, Heskey still feels will be a tough nut to crack.
He said: “With a German team of old, you know exactly what you’re getting — powerful engines.
“You think of German technology and that’s the team — something that goes and goes, never stops, works and looks good.
“Now they’ve got a new generation that are finding their own feet. They’re in transition.
“But it’s still a German side. I don’t think they’re ever going to lie down and say, ‘We’re not as good as England’.
“England should take the best things from themselves, know they can go out there and beat this Germany side with their tactical know-how, the management and the players showing on the pitch that they can perform under pressure and that they are the better players.”

Heskey would favour England switching to a back three of Harry Maguire, John Stones and Tyrone Mings against Germany, with Luke Shaw and either Reece James or Kieran Trippier as the wing-backs for their delivery.
He feels Southgate will stick with two-goal Raheem Sterling as well as his two holding midfielders.
It means that if they do revert to three centre-backs, it is likely to be a shootout between Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka for that last spot behind Harry Kane.
Heskey added: “Jack set up the goal against the Czech Republic and was fantastic.
“But Saka has given them a dilemma. He showed a fearlessness, he took people on and that’s what we’ve been begging for.”
Whatever Southgate goes for, Heskey agrees that Tuesday’s encounter is a landmark moment in the England manager’s reign.
Michael Owen grabbed a hat-trick for the Three LionsCredit: PA
No one expected the Three Lions to make the World Cup semi-finals three years ago but now many are pointing out how favourable the draw was in that tournament.
England have hardly set the Euros alight but have done what was required.
Beat a big-hitter like Germany, though, and people will begin to believe.
Heskey, who played with Southgate for England, added: “It’s a huge game for his legacy. Get through this to the quarters and the semis.
“That’s massive for Gareth because you’re not saying he’s taken an easy route — he’s beaten Germany.”
Heskey knows just what that feels like.

Euro 2020: Watch Cristiano Ronaldo prank Portugal pal Pepe as superstar sneakily pours freezing cold water on his head

CRISTIANO RONALDO pranked Portugal team-mate Pepe after giving him a shock in training. Ronaldo, 36, sneakily poured freezing cold water on the defender’s head as they enjoyed a recovery day after qualifying for the Euro 2020 knockout stages.

Ronaldo finds it very funny and Pepe takes the prank well
The record-breaking Juventus superstar spotted his old pal as he relaxed on the sidelines at Portugal’s training camp after Wednesday’s gruelling 2-2 draw with France in Budapest.
Pepe, 38, was blissfully unaware, but luckily cameras caught Ronaldo as he tip-toed towards the his former Real Madrid team-mate with a cheesy grin on his face… and poured water straight over his head.
Pepe then reeled in shock as Ronaldo ran away giggling.
Portugal’s official Instagram page captioned the clip: “Extreme heat? The captain is here to help.”
it’s no wonder Ronaldo and Pepe were all smiles after helping Portugal qualify from the Euros’ ‘Group of Death’.

Portugal were briefly heading out in a dramatic finale to the group stage but secured their progress to the knockout stage, with France and Germany also going through.
It was a momentous occasion for Ronaldo as his double helped him join Ali Daei as the joint highest scorer in international football, with a ludicrous 109 goals – five of them coming in only three games in this tournament.
And the pair will need their game faces on once again by Sunday night as they face top ranked Belgium in the second round.

    MORE FROM RASHFORD
And Rashford admits he has been unable to produce his best form in recent months.
He said: “Obviously I am not performing at my best, and what I know I can perform to.
“Whatever that is down to, it doesn’t really matter because it has been going on since early on in the season.
“I managed to get through the season with United. I think I had 36 goal involvements so I can’t look back at the year and say ‘mmm, I should have taken time off to do this and do that.’
“I just want to be available for every game.”
    RASH DECISION
Marcus Rashford could face shoulder surgery after the Euros, making him a doubt for the start of Manchester United’s Premier League campaign.
Rashford has played through pain to ensure his place in England’s squad for the Euros.
And asked whether he needed an operation, Man Utd ace Rashford, 23, said: “I have to decide after – it’s either an operation or I don’t get an operation on my shoulder.
“I’m not 100 per cent sure if I need it yet. I’ll finish strongly here and like I said I’ve got a few weeks off to just relax and decide what I’m going to do.
“The doctors have not said how long I’d be out for.
“The reason I don’t know is that when the season was going, and before I came here (with England), I knew there was no chance I was going to be getting the operation so I did not know how long the operation would put me out for.
“I am fully concentrated on here (England). When the tournament is finished then I will ask the question.
“But to get to this stage where I am now, it was a massive aim of mine back at the beginning of the season. I’m prepared mentally and physically for games.”

    MORE FROM STERLING
The City winger is unfazed by the prospect of renewing the historic rivalry with Germany next Tuesday at Wembley.
Sterling, who has never played against the Germans before, told the Lions’ Den show: “Those games were crazy. The France one was high quality throughout, both teams.
“We knew we were going to get second place in that group and we knew that it was going to be a challenge. In this tournament you need these challenges.
“We need now to go against Germany and we need a big performance. If you’re going to win this tournament, if you’re going to be in with a shout
“You’ve got to put in these big performances against these big sides, and that’s what we are going to try to do on Tuesday. I’m not really looking into the history, the battles.
“What has happened, has happened. All we can do us be here now and be present.”

    STERLING EFFORT
Raheem Sterling says winning the Euros with England would top anything he has achieved with Manchester City.
He said: “I think winning something with the national team, England, would definitely be the greatest achievement that I could possibly do.
“I mean not me…that the team could possibly achieve. You win stuff with your clubs and it’s a great achievement, but this is on a bigger scale.
“You’re representing a nation, a country. So to achieve something with England would be the biggest thing to happen in my footballing career.”
    WINGING IT
France suffered a DOUBLE injury scare on Thursday when wingers Thomas Lemar and Marcus Thuram both hobbled out of training.
The two stars both looked to be in pain during a recovery session following yesterday’s 2-2 draw with Portugal.
Tottenham transfer target Thuram, 23, looked to be visibly in pain as he fell to his knees on the training ground in the Hungarian capital Budapest.
While Atletico Madrid star Lemar, 25, was clearly distraught as he put his head in his hands while being helped off the field by two others.
Didier Deschamps now faces an anxious wait over their fitness after setting up a last-16 clash against Switzerland on Monday.

    HUNGARY FOR CHANGE
Gini Wijnaldum is ready to lead Holland off the pitch if they suffer racist abuse in Budapest.
He said: “You could lose a game because of those kinds of slurs. In this case Uefa should be there to protect the players and they should make the decision.
“Players often get punished for protecting themselves so Uefa needs to take a lead role in this.
“They should be the ones to say ‘if this sort of thing happens we will cancel the game and stop playing’.
“It is not acceptable and we don’t want it. When it happened in the beginning and I started thinking about it. I think different things.
“I started to think ‘would I walk off the pitch?’ — which I might, actually.
It could be the case that I will walk off the pitch but I will speak with the players about it first.
“If such a thing happens and the referee stops the game, the players of the opposing team say ‘we are not going to take this’ and they walk off the pitch then you would feel a lot better as a player and it would make a greater statement rather than to do it alone.”
    WAIST MANAGEMENT
England fans have launched a petition for Gareth Southgate to bring back his iconic waistcoat for next week’s Euro 2020 clash with Germany,
The Three Lions will take on their old foe in Tuesday’s last-16 clash at Wembley.
And supporters are eager for Southgate to slip back into his famous waistcoat after it stole the show on England’s run to the 2018 World Cup semis.
The Three Lions boss has opted for a more casual look at the Euros so far, wearing a polo shirt under a jacket.
But football fans from social enterprise notjust clothing have launched a petition for the waistcoat’s return, along releasing a waistcoat t-shirt with all profits donated to Football Beyond Borders.
A Southgate Christmas jumper raised over £50,000 for charities including NHS Charities Together, The Trussell Trust and Save The Children.

    LEW BEAUTY
Arsenal are reportedly prepared to pay upwards of £50million to sign England star Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer.
The Gunners are keen to bolster their attacking options with doubts over the future of Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette, according to The Telegraph.
DCL is contracted to Everton until 2025, but it is believed the Toffees would struggle to turn down a big-money bid for the England international.
    WALE TO WIN
David Brooks feels he owes Wales boss Robert Page a debt of gratitude for not turning his back on him after he played for England.
Four years ago, Brooks was at the centre of a mix-up when he was named by Page’s Dragons for the Toulon tournament before the Three Lions then called him up.
Brooks opted to play for England Under-20s, was named 2017 player of the competition and helped the Young Lions taste glory in France before recommitting to Wales.
Brooks said: “The whole start of it was kind of a big misunderstanding. I’d arranged to go away with England and everything was already planned. On the day of the announcement at the tournament, about an hour before I was getting announced with England, Wales announced their squad.
“I hadn’t been contacted, I’d never been called up before so I didn’t know anything about it and I was kind of just in the squad.
“I spoke to Pagey on the phone and said I’d already made commitments and promises that I’d go away with England. He wasn’t really phased by that so I had to thank him for not turning his back on me.”
    BBC BLAST
The BBC has received 6,417 complaints after it continued broadcasting as Denmark star Christian Eriksen received emergency treatment during Euro 2020.
The 29-year-old collapsed on the pitch during his country’s first group game against Finland, leaving teammates and fans in tears.
The 6,417 complaints are significantly less in comparison to other incidents the Beeb has been involved with.
For example, the BBC confirmed it received 109,741 complaints from the public over its coverage of the Duke of Edinburgh’s death.
The figure made the coverage of Philip’s death the most complained-about programme in the corporation’s history.

    MIK TAKER
Former Man Utd defender Mikael Silvestre has urged England boss Gareth Southgate to be more adventurous at Euro 2020.
He told Ladbrokes: “I think Gareth Southgate could be more adventurous in midfield, rather than playing two defensive midfielders, and maybe he’s just being cautious.
“There are 70 million managers in England watching from home, and even more around the world, and so it’s sometimes easy for us to talk about who should be playing.
“England have to step things up a gear moving forward in the tournament now.
“We’ve seen players like Harry Kane struggling, but you can’t put all of the responsibility on him.”
    WHERE THERE’S A WIL
Jack Wilshere has named his England XI to play Germany in response to Gary Neville picking his team.
The ITV pundit wanted to see Wilshere’s team after the former Arsenal midfielder criticised his omission of Phil Foden and Jack Grealish.

    TOP FRIENDS
Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema shared a heartwarming chat at half-time of their Euro 2020 encounter.
The former Real Madrid pals formed two-thirds of the feared BBC triumvirate at the Bernabeu, alongside Gareth Bale.
Therefore, their Group F meeting on Wednesday was a personal reunion inside a hugely-anticipated Euros clash.
At half-time and with the score one apiece, the forwards embraced and smiled as they shared a brief chat.
They then swapped shirts as they entered the tunnel in Budapest, continuing the discussion towards the dressing rooms.

    SHEER CLASS
England stars were treated to a surprise live gig from pop star Ed Sheeran ahead of their crunch clash with Germany.
The Three Lions will renew their rivalry with the Germans next Tuesday in their Euro 2020 last-16 tie.
And manager Gareth Southgate lightened the mood in the camp by having Sheeran belt out a number of his hits at St George’s Park.
Sheeran’s impromptu gig took place on Wednesday, which has so far been players’ only day off during the tournament.
And according to The Daily Telegraph, Southgate’s troops were ‘thrilled’ by the outdoor acoustic concert.
The players were said to have sat around the ‘Shape of You’ star as he played a number of his hits.
Sheeran, 30, was given special permission to enter the England bubble.
    FEELING WELL
The FA is reportedly deciding whether it is possible for Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell to take part in full training with the rest of the England squad.
Social distancing measures would have to be put in place as the Chelsea pair have had to self isolate since coming into close contact with Scotland’s Billy Gilmour, who test positive for Covid-19 after Friday’s draw at Wembley.
Mount and Chilwell have since trained in private at St. George’s Park, and have not come into contact with the rest of the squad.
But the FA is looking into the training methods used by clubs during project restart in 2020, according to Sky Sports.
Players were split into groups of five and trained without coming into contact, tackling was also forbidden.
Mount and Chilwell were sidelined for the 1-0 win over Czech Republic but will be available for selection against Germany on Tuesday.
But they will have to isolate until then, despite both returning negative tests after the match against Scotland.
As a result, they will not be allowed to participate in training unless the FA finds a solution.
    VIRUS FEARS
England are embroiled in a coronavirus scare after a Sky Sports reporter tested positive at the training base.
The Daily Mail report how the journalist and cameraman were asked to leave St George’s Park.
The reporter is now self-isolating at a hotel, just five days before England’s crunch Round of 16 clash with Germany.
It comes after Three Lions duo Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell were forced to self-isolate for 10 days after coming into close contact with Billy Gilmour.
A Sky Sports spokesperson commented: “A reporter is isolating in a hotel and awaiting the result of a PCR test.
“The camera operative tested negative and has left St George’s Park to self-isolate.”
It remains unknown whether the positive test will have any further repercussions on anybody involved within the camp.
    BALE FORCE
Wales are wrapping talisman Gareth Bale in cotton wool to ensure he is fully fit to face the Danes.
Captain Bale, as well as Joe Rodon and Kieffer Moore, trained separately from Robert Page’s squad during the open section of yesterday’s (Wed) training session in Rome.
Wales fly to Amsterdam today for Saturday’s Euro 2020 last-16 tie with Denmark with Bale recovering after suffering four fouls against Italy – the most of any Welsh player.
Boss Page said: “Gareth did take a kick, a knock but he’ll be fine. There’s no need now to train him for fitness.
“Now it is all about recovery for the next game and we will protect him a little bit more than we normally would. He will be fit.”
If Page’s Wales progress to the quarter-finals they would face a return to Baku and another victory in Azerbaijan could set up a potential semi-final clash with arch rivals England at Wembley.
    CLASH OF THE TITANT
England welcome Germany to Wembley on Tuesday with a place in the Euro 2020 quarter-finals at stake.
But there will also be a healthy dose of pride on offer for two nations with a long and fascinating history of footballing rivalry.
An inaugural 3-3 draw in May 1930 was a strong hint of what was to come as the first four meetings between the pair threw out 22 goals.
During this period, England’s dominance showed with seven wins in a row, including an infamous visit to Berlin in 1938, that culminated in the 1966 World Cup final.
Geoff Hurst’s hat-trick at Wembley may have had a helping hand from a potentially dubious goalline decision (more of that later) but etched his name into English folklore.
To this day, that 4-2 win at Wembley marks the Three Lions’ only World Cup triumph.

    LOW AND BEHOLD
England will face old foes Germany for the first time since 2017 in their crunch Euro 2020 last-16 clash.
The Three Lions take on Die Mannschaft on Tuesday at Wembley after Joachim Low’s side scraped second spot in their group.
It has been just under four years since the pair last met, battling out an underwhelming 0-0 draw at the home of football.
Boss Gareth Southgate picked England’s most inexperienced side since 1980 for the friendly as he looked to cast an eye over a number of names.
Here’a how that starting XI looked.

    WINNING FORMULA?
Gary Neville has revealed his England side to play Germany which includes a formation switch.
The Manchester United legend, who was England’s assistant coach from 2012-2016, gave his tactical verdict on Twitter.
With the Three Lions set to play arch rivals Germany in the Euros last 16 at Wembley next Tuesday, Neville selected a defensive 5-2-3 formation.
It would match-up with Germany’s set-up, with Joachim Low having also opted for a three-man central defence in the tournament.
    Here’s how it looks.

    GREAT DANE
Denmark pulled off a remarkable result against Russia on Monday to keep their Euro 2020 dream alive – but it wasn’t anywhere near as heroic as this fan’s efforts to carry a mountain of beer.
A 4-1 victory over the Russians booked the Danes a place in the last-16 of the tournament.
But instead of marveling at Andreas Christensen’s stunner, footy fans across the world are now in awe of an unidentified Danish fan carrying a huge stack of beer.
Two days after the match, footage of a man carrying 12 – yes 12 – pints of beer started doing the rounds on social media.
And to top it off, he had a hotdog sandwiched between the top row of beer.
The beer-loving bloke – who was rocking a Denmark cowboy hat – expertly made his way up the stairs at the Parken Stadium without spilling a single drop of the amber nectar.
The Danish fan made his way through the crowd with a whopping 12 beers in hand

    MIK TAKER
Former Man Utd and Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre has urged England boss Gareth Southgate to be more adventurous at Euro 2020.

    SACRE BLEU
Cristiano Ronaldo may have equalled Ali Daei’s international record… but French publication L’Equipe were still far from impressed.
The Portugal superstar scored twice from the spot in a hugely entertaining 2-2 draw with rivals France.
It took his international tally to 109 – meaning he is just one goal away from beating Iranian legend Daei’s all-time feat.
Ronaldo is also now surging ahead in the race for the Euro 2020 Golden Boot with five from his opening three matches.
Despite his achievements, L’Equipe still handed Ronaldo a measly six in their notoriously tough player ratings.
The publication are renowned for their brutal rating system with a perfect 10 rating being dished out just 12 times.
L’Equipe gave Cristiano Ronaldo a six rating for his performance against France
    COULD BE KIE
Gareth Southgate looks prime to bring Kieran Trippier back into the starting XI to face the Germans after being benched against Scotland and Czech Republic.
According to the Daily Mail. Southgate is keen to start him as he believes his dead-ball quality could prove key next Tuesday,
Nine of England’s 12 goals at the World Cup 2018 came from set-pieces but they have yet to take advantage during the Euros.
Southgate said: “Our delivery hasn’t been good, really.
“There was the one where John Stones hit the post (against Scotland) which was bang on the money and Trippier’s delivery in the first game was excellent, but we haven’t matched that since.
“It’s quite rare for us. We have gone four or five matches without a set-piece goal and that’s an area where we can improve upon.”

Euro 2020: If England don’t play Jadon Sancho, Germany should try to get him a passport, says Lothar Matthaus

LOTHAR MATTHAUS is baffled by Jadon Sancho’s lack of England action – and wishes he could get a German passport! Borussia Dortmund star Sancho, 21, has played just SIX MINUTES at the Euros.

And ahead of Tuesday’s huge last-16 clash with old foes Germany, World Cup-winning legend Matthaus said: “He was one of the best players in the Bundesliga for the last two years.
“If he is not good enough for England, we would like to give him a German passport.
“It has surprised many in Germany.”
Matthaus warns England have to beat Germany inside 120 minutes or prepare for more penalty shootout heartbreak.
The two sides face each other in a major tournament for the eighth time on Tuesday.
Victories for the Three Lions have been few and far between – the World Cup final in 1966 and a 1-0 win in the 2000 Euros group stage stand alone.
And England have never beaten Germany in a shootout – including scarring defeats at Italia 90 and Euro 96, when current boss Gareth Southgate missed.

Matthaus said: “England have a chance to win – but not with penalty kicks.
“If it goes to penalties, Germany will win, so England have to do it inside 120 minutes.
“We are always very good with penalties. It’s always a little bit of a joke between the Germans and the English but if it goes to a shootout then we are the favourites. You start to think about what has happened in the last 30 or 40 years. When we played in 1990 and 1996…
“It’s a lot of pressure for the English players because they read every day in the newspapers all the stories about penalties.”
Matthaus was involved in the shootout with England at the 1990 World Cup, scoring Germany’s second before Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle missed theirs.
Matthaus added: “In 1990, we knew we could win the World Cup and we were ready to win it.
“This confidence was growing in the tournament and we showed it.
“The best game was against England in the semis. England had a fantastic team and they were getting better and better throughout the tournament – it was a strong fight between England and Germany to go the final.”

    England’s sorry record against Germany

Another tough battle is expected on Tuesday as Southgate welcomes Joachim Low’s underperforming side to Wembley.
Home advantage could prove crucial yet Matthaus believes the Germans will love playing at England’s “magical” national stadium.
He added: “Nobody wanted this game so early. Maybe we would have accepted England versus Germany in the final. It could have been another final like 1966!
“England don’t like to play against Germany but Germany also don’t like to play against England.
“But the players have to be happy to have a big game in Wembley. It doesn’t get any better.
“Wembley is something magical still and in the last 20 or 30 years we had very good experiences – we won Euro 96 there, Didier Hamann scored the last goal in the old Wembley. We like Wembley.”
Stuttgart-born Jamal Musiala, who represented England from Under-15s to Under-21s has switched allegiance to Germany.

He became the youngest German player to feature at a major tournament, at 18 years and 177 days, after coming off the bench during their 2-2 draw with Hungary.
And Matthaus said: “For me, he has to start against England.”

Matthaus was speaking as research from Official Accommodation and Attractions Booking Partner of UEFA EURO 2020™, Booking.com found that 61% of English supporters would rather see Germany, their main rivals, win the upcoming tournament, than skip their next holiday.

The Liverpool manager, clearly relishing the prospect of Tuesday’s game at Wembley, has instilled that famous German mentality at Anfield.
He labelled his Reds side “mentality monsters”, but Henderson also believes England are now stronger psychologically compared to flaky teams of the past.
He said: “In football or in any sport, mental strength is a huge part of things and I feel we’ve got a lot of players in the squad who are very mentally strong. That’s going to be important come Tuesday.
“We’ve shown over recent years that we manage games better and we always keep going until the very end.
“Winning the penalty shoot-out against Colombia in the World Cup was a big thing.
“So mentally I do feel we’ve improved over the last few years.
“A big part of tournament football is managing games and being controlled in certain situations so that has been a real positive.
“Hopefully we can continue that and improve in one or two areas.

“We still give Germany a lot of respect, they are a top, top team with world class players.
“It will be a tough game but we are in the knockout stages of the Euros so it is always going to be tough.
“Over the last few games, we’ve been good defensively and very solid.
“We would have liked to have scored a few more goals but we have been winning games, keeping clean sheets and topped the group so there is still a lot of positivity. We need to take that into Tuesday.”
Henderson, 31, had a groin operation in February and struggled on his return in a friendly against Austria.
He was then handed a 45-minute run-out in the 1-0 win over the Czech Republic on Tuesday.
He said: “It was very pleasing to get some minutes the other night. I feel good. I’ve felt good for a while now.
“I played in the friendly a few weeks ago. I have been training for a long time, feeling well. I just need to make sure I’m ready when called upon.”
Henderson is convinced England have the ability to see off the Germans.
He added: “We’ve got quite a young squad but that can be a positive.
“A lot of these lads just go out and play, enjoy the game and play with no fear.

“It would mean everything to us to get into the next round.
“To beat Germany as well is special because it’s always a big game.
“We’ll look forward to the game and all we can do is give absolutely everything we’ve got on Tuesday. Hopefully that’s enough to win.”
