Kylian Mbappe has ‘oversized ego’ and it’s a problem for France at Euro 2020, says former PSG winger Jerome Rothen

FORMER Paris Saint-Germain winger Jerome Rothen believes Kylian Mbappe’s ‘oversized ego’ is proving to be problematic for France. The 43-year-old, who won 13 caps for Les Bleus, has stated that Didier Deschamps is struggling to control the Les Parisiens striker’s attitude.

Mbappe was involved in a public spat with Olivier Giroud prior to Euro 2020 where the Chelsea ace aimed a dig towards the 22-year-old.
The ex-Arsenal centre-forward accused Mbappe of failing to pass to him during the 3-0 friendly win against Bulgaria.
His statement left Mbappe feeling ‘frustrated’ and ‘angry’, while he insisted that Giroud’s comments ‘affected’ him ahead of the tournament.
Mbappe started all three of France’s Euro 2020 group games, but failed to chip in with a goal or assist with his performances questioned.
And ex-Rangers loanee Rothen – part of France’s Euro 2004 squad – has hit out at Mbappe as he claimed no-one can be satisfied with his displays so far.
He told RMC Sport: “That he is the leader on the pitch, no problem… that it [his ego] extends to off the field too, that bothers me.
“I think Didier Deschamps can no longer manage it and it is problematic. It is even surprising that he lets Kylian Mbappe do so many things.
“It can be seen in his performances on the pitch. Today, we cannot say that Kylian Mbappe has had a successful Euros.

“Is he in the right like he was at PSG throughout the end of the season? I would say no.
“We expect much better from Kylian Mbappe. Everyone thinks that Mbappe is one of the best players in Europe.
“But if you immediately put him in the category of the very best, you cannot be satisfied.”
Mbappe is heading into the final year of his contract at Parc des Princes and has been linked with a shock move away this summer.
It has been reported that Real Madrid could make a swoop for the player after Euro 2020.

They were pictured training in the Herzogenaurach sunshine and even enjoyed a bike ride.
Meanwhile, the England squad were put through their paces with some heavy lifting at their St George’s base.
German boss Low, who leaves the side after the tournament, decided to give his players a second day off to rest.
It came after their dramatic 2-2 draw against Hungary which secured second spot in Group F.
Germany thought the players would benefit more from an extra 24 hours of relaxation, rather than being put through their paces in training.
Instead, they will only train properly over the weekend before going through a light session ahead of making the flight to London on Monday.
Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell are moving closer to returning to full training ahead of the Germany clash.
Mount and Chilwell did drills on a pitch well away from the rest of the England squad – and socially distant from each other.

The Chelsea pair have been in isolation since their ‘close contact’ with Blues team-mate Billy Gilmour.
Gilmour tested positive for Covid-19 after chatting in the tunnel with Mount and Chilwell following the bore draw with Scotland on June 18.
Their quarantine period will expire only at midnight on Monday, but they will be available for selection against Germany.

DENMARK fans took over Amsterdam today ahead of their highly-anticipated clash with Wales in the first of Euro 2020’s last-16 ties. The travelling Dragons supporters meanwhile were greatly outnumbered after they were blocked from following Gareth Bale and Co from their group-stage heroics in Baku to the Netherlands.

SunSport revealed that the last-16 tie – which kicks off at the Johan Cruyff Arena – favours the Danes due to coronavirus travel guidelines.
Neither the UK nor Denmark is listed as a ‘safe’ country by the Netherlands’ Covid rules but, as a Schengen area nation, Danes were told they can exploit a loophole to watch the match.
Wales supporters have been told that they will not be allowed into the Dutch capital and would have to make do watching from home.
And the ticket allocation originally destined for their Welsh rivals was instead handed over to bolster their support.

Denmark fans flooded Rembrandtplein square in Amsterdam all decked out in their country’s colours with shirts, scarves and hats.
Many enjoyed the weather with pints while others with small children flopped onto the lawn hours before kick-off.
Several Denmark supporters also sported Christian Eriksen’s No10 kit as they queued to get into Ajax’s home stadium.
The midfielder, 29, collapsed in the first-half of his nation’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Eriksen underwent an operation to fit a ‘heart-starting’ device called an ICD to help prevent future problems.
Later that week, the Inter Milan ace was discharged from hospital in a major boost.
And Eriksen even visited his Denmark pals at training ahead of their last-16 showdown with Wales.

Barcelona set to be compensated £2.5m by Fifa for Ousmane Dembele’s injury while on Euro 2020 duty with France

BARCELONA are reportedly set to be compensated £2.5million by Fifa after Ousmane Dembele suffered an injury on Euro 2020 duty. The 24-year-old was forced to leave France’s Euro 2020 squad this week after he suffered an injury in the draw with Hungary.

Les Bleus had only brought on the winger as a substitute earlier in the second-half before he was struck down with a knee issue.
Dider Deschamps said after the game: “It’s a hit to the tendon, behind the knee, it will be necessary to check.
“He played on, he attempted a cross and felt some fairly significant discomfort. I brought him off. We will have to watch it.”
BETTING SPECIAL: GET ENGLAND TO BEAT GERMANY AT 14/1
SunSport previously reported that Dembele is set to go under the knife to repair the damaged bicep femoris muscle in his right leg.
And the former Borussia Dortmund winger could be kept out for as much as four months which would see him return to action in October.
As a result, Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claim that FIFA’s Protection Program will compensate Barcelona for Dembele’s injury.
The report adds that the Catalans will receive £17,600 every 24 hours the Frenchman is out if he is absent more than 24 days.
Dembele’s operation for his latest thigh issue could take place in Finland where he was treated on in 2017 and last February.

France international Dembele had enjoyed a largely injury-free season with Barcelona to earn his place in the squad.
Having missed all of Les Bleus’ matches in 2019 and 2020, he earned a recall in March of this year.
But his injury could scupper any plans Manchester United had to try and secure a transfer for him this summer.

Mount had established himself in Southgate’s starting 11 before the bizarre chain of events forced him and Chilwell to return to England’s base at St George’s Park in separate ambulances.
They have been confined to their hotel rooms except when training on their own to maintain fitness, with separate FA staff overseeing them to prevent any further Covid mishaps.

A week later, 7,200 fans watched Manchester City beat Tottenham in the Carabao Cup final.
Before 21,000 spectators gathered to watch the Foxes secure a shock victory over Chelsea on May 15 at the Home of Football.
In total, there were 28 confirmed coronavirus cases from the 58,000 that attended sporting and cultural events in April and May.
Six of those positive cases were recorded at the World Snooker Championship that welcomed 10,000 fans over 17 days.
The news will come as a welcome relief for Boris Johnson and Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin ahead of England’s clash against Germany.
There will be 45,000 supporters in attendance at Wembley for the Euro 2020 last-16 clash on Tuesday,

“The last 18 months have taught us – both on and off the pitch – how integral fans are to the fabric of the game.
“This tournament has been a beacon of hope to reassure people that we are returning to a more normal way of life and this is a further step along that road.
“I am grateful to the Prime Minister and the UK Government for their hard work in finalising these arrangements with us, to make the tournament final stages a great success in Wembley.”

Pepe FUMES at Rui Patricio after he ignored his and Cristiano Ronaldo’s advice that Benzema would kick penalty left

PORTUGAL centre-back Pepe was left raging after his keeper Rui Patricio refused to listen when he told him where Karim Benzema was going to place his penalty. The French striker, who was a long-time team-mate of both Pepe and Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid, tucked his penalty away into the bottom left corner.

But that was before Pepe could be seen gesticulating to Patricio from behind Benzema’s back, telling him to dive in the exact spot where the forward ended up putting the ball.
Ronaldo could also be seen speaking with his keeper before Benzema stepped up.
Yet the 33-year-old shot-stopper refused to take the advice of his fellow countryman and went on to dive the wrong way.
Benzema’s spot kick was the second of three penalties on the night as Ronaldo dispatched two for Portugal to take his tally at Euro 2020 to five goals.
France conceded the first pen after Spurs captain Hugo Lloris caught Danilo Pereira in the head attempting to clear the ball from a corner.
And speaking at halftime, BBC pundits Alan Shearer and Rio Ferdinand both felt it was a stonewall spot-kick.
Shearer said: “I think it’s a pen. Lloris has mistimed coming out and whacked him in the face”, while Rio added: “That’s GBH”.
Manchester United icon Ferdinand then agreed with his former teammate Frank Lampard that ‘keepers have been given leeway for years’.

Pepe shouted at Patricio for not listening to him after Benzema scored the penalty
Ferdinand said: “Goalkeepers are a protected species aren’t they. It was dangerous, reckless and I’m pleased it was given.”
However, the 42-year-old couldn’t say the same for France’s penalty after Nelson Semedo was penalised for body checking Kylian Mbappe.
Karim Benzema stepped up to convert but asked for his thoughts, Ferdinand added: “This is a terrible decision.
“I don’t think there’s any doubt in any of our minds. It’s good defending from Semedo, I’ve been critical of him. That’s not a penalty for me.”
Referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz – who officiated the Champions League final – ultimately gave a third penalty after the break.
Jules Kounde was adjudged to have handled the ball and Ronaldo bagged his second of the night to rescue a 2-2 draw with France.
The clash was the first time in Euros history that three penalties had been awarded in one game.
