Romelu Lukaku says he belongs in ‘world class’ group with Harry Kane and Robert Lewandowski but isn’t given same credit

BELGIUM striker Romelu Lukaku has called for people to recognise him as a world class striker ahead of Belgium’s Euro 2020 last-16 clash with Portugal. Speaking to the media in his press conference before tonight’s game the Inter striker asked for people to put his name up there with the world’s greatest strikers.
Romelu Lukaku speaking to the press ahead of tonight’s Euro 2020 tie
🗣 “When people talk about Lewandowski, Benzema, Suarez, Kane, they say it’s a world-class level.”With me, it was always about ‘good form’… I belong with that group.”Put some respect on Romelu Lukaku’s name.#EURO2020 pic.twitter.com/nvo7yRdW4U— Goal (@goal) June 27, 2021

Lukaku said: “People have tended to describe things this way.
“When they talk about [Robert] Lewandowski, [Karim] Benzema, [Luis] Suarez, [Harry] Kane, they would say it’s world class level and with me it’s always about being in good form.
“In the last two years I think I have shown it’s not just good form.
“I belong with that group, I am at that level.”
The 28-year-old’s stats at international level certainly back up his claim, he’s scored a whopping 63 goals in 96 games for his country.
He also has a better goals-per-game ratio than ANY international with over 50 strikes.
Lukaku has also been in sparkling form for Inter this season, scoring 30 goals in 44 games as well as chipping in with ten assists to help fire Antonio Conte’s side to a first Serie A title since 2010.
He is the joint-second top scorer at Euro 2020 so far with three goals, the same number as Robert Lewandowski.
The striker bagged a brace in the 3-0 win over Russia on matchday one, as well as the second in the 2-0 win against Finland on matchday three.
Only 63 players in the history of football have scored 50+ international goals. Of those playing for a UEFA nation in the 21st century, only one has a goals per game hit rate of >0.65: Romelu Lukaku.— Nick Harris (@sportingintel) June 21, 2021

Romelu Lukaku firing home his third goal of Euro 2020 against Finland
Romelu Lukaku celebrates after sealing the win for Belgium in the 2-0 victory over Finland
That’s one more goal than Karim Benzema who has bagged twice for France so far, and three more than Harry Kane, who is yet to get off the mark at Euro 2020 after winning the golden boot at the 2018 World Cup.
Kane in fact has mustered just one effort on target in three games for Gareth Southgate’s England.
Luis Suarez is also in indifferent form for his country, with the striker failing to register a goal for Uruguay in the entirety of 2021 so far, including their ongoing Copa America campaign.
BETTING SPECIAL: GET ENGLAND TO BEAT GERMANY AT 14/1

Lukaku is next in action tonight in the mouthwatering last-sixteen clash between Belgium and Portugal at the Estadio de la Cartuja in Seville, in what is the first major tournament meeting between the sides.
An equally appealing quarter-final fixture against Italy then awaits the winners of tonight’s tie.

Man Utd star David de Gea ‘among Spain Euro 2020 players practising penalties’ after Europa League final nightmare

LUIS ENRIQUE has got his Spain side practising their spot kicks in training after their recent woes from twelve yards.Daily Mail Spanish football expert Pete Jenson reports that even David De Gea is getting his eye in from the spot should any of Spain’s remaining Euro 2020 fixtures be decided on penalties.
David De Gea is yet to feature for Spain at Euro 2020
Manchester United shot-stopper David De Gea will be hoping that he won’t be needed from twelve yards in the event of penalties in Spain’s last-16 tie against Croatia after his missed penalty in the Europa League final last month handed Villarreal the trophy.
An incredible 21 players had converted their spot kicks in the Europa League final in Gdansk before David De Gea stepped up and missed to give Villarreal an incredible 11-10 win on penalties.
It’s unlikely De Gea will have to endure the nightmare of penalty taking duty though if it comes to it as he is second-choice Spain keeper behind Athletic Bilbao shot-stopper Unai Simon.
Spain boss Luis Enrique has reportedly been organising mock penalty shoot-outs in training, which have included practise kicks for goalkeepers De Gea, Simon and Robert Sanchez of Brighton.
BETTING SPECIAL: GET ENGLAND TO BEAT GERMANY AT 14/1
The Euro 1964, 2008 and 2012 winners are in woeful form from twelve yards out, missing their last FIVE penalties in a row.
That includes two spot kicks this tournament, with Alvaro Morata failing to convert against Slovakia in Spain’s last group game, and Gerard Moreno hitting the post against Poland in the game before.
Enrique is said to have picked out four penalty takers in Gerard Moreno, Morata, Sergio Busquets and Koke, but that still leaves him short in the event of a penalty shootout.
Last month’s Europa League final between Manchester United and Villarreal finished 1-1 before going to penalties
De Gea was the last man to take a penalty before the first takes would have had to go again
Geronimo Rulli saves David De Gea’s spot kick

Alvaro Morata sees his penalty saved by Newcastle’s Martin Dubravka

2010 World Cup winners Spain take on Croatia tomorrow at 5pm in Copenhagen for a place in the last-eight of Euro 2020, where a clash with the winners of France vs Switzerland awaits.
Spain could only finish as runners-up in Group E behind Sweden, and were not even guaranteed of their place in the last-sixteen until the 5-0 drubbing of Slovakia on matchday three.
Their opening game was a drab 0-0 draw against group winners Sweden before a 1-1 draw with Poland saw them needing a win against Slovakia to guarantee progression to the last 16 of the tournament.
Should Spain beat Croatia tomorrow and either France/Switzerland in the last-eight, they would set up a mouthwatering clash against the winners of Belgium/Portugal vs Italy.

Matteo Pessina pulls off ‘best celebration ever’ after Italy winner against Austria with fans loving his face slide

ITALY’S Matteo Pessina delighted football fans last night with his hilarious celebration after scoring in the Azzurri’s 2-1 win against Austria. The Atalanta midfielder scored Italy’s second goal in extra time to help Roberto Mancini’s side progress to the quarter-finals of Euro 2020.

BETTING SPECIAL: GET ENGLAND TO BEAT GERMANY AT 14/1

And after finding the net Pessina took off in celebration and started running towards the corner flag.
Instead of a conventional celebration though he ended up diving flat on his face, much to the amusement of football fans around the world.
One fan simply reacted to the celebration by tweeting: “Pessina’s celebration is the best ever.”
Another tweeted: “Pessina there with the best celebration I’ve ever seen.”
Fans are comparing the celebration to the ‘dead fish’ celebration from the FIFA video game which is perhaps where Pessina got inspiration for the bizarre reaction to doubling Italy’s lead last night.
After four wins from four to start Euro 2020, Italy set a a new national record of 31 GAMES unbeaten to reach the last eight of the tournament.
Last night’s round-of-16 clash against Austria was their toughest test of the tournament so far, although things are only going to get more difficult for Mancini and Co.
They’re set to face the winners of the mouthwatering clash between Belgium and Portugal in the last eight.
Should Italy progress from that game then their semi-final would be against the winners of France/Switzerland vs Croatia/Spain.

The game last night saw the first goal that the Azzurri had conceded all tournament after three clean sheet victories in the group stage.
And they were made to work hard for the win as Austria pushed the four-time World Cup winners all the way to extra-time.
Substitute Federico Chiesa put Italy ahead with a smart finish, before Pessina doubled Italy’s lead just before the extra-time break and set off in what is now an iconic celebration.
Juventus winger Federico Chiesa celebrates putting Italy 1-0 ahead
Pessina, 24, was initially left out out Roberto Mancini’s final 26-man Italy squad and was only called into the team after an injury to Inter midfielder Stefano Sensi.
Azzurri fans will be thanking their lucky stars that Pessina is in the squad though, with the Atalanta midfielder also scoring the only goal of the game in the 1-0 group stage win against Wales.
Pessina started in the much changed line-up against Wales as Italy were already through and came off the bench yesterday, but his two goals in two games may have just earned him a place in the starting side for Friday’s quarter final.

Gareth Bale says he DOES want to carry on playing for Wales after storming out of BBC interview in wake of Denmark loss

GARETH BALE has vowed to carry on playing for Wales ‘until the day I stop playing football’.The Dragons captain cast further doubt over his future when he refused to say if Saturday’s crushing 4-0 Euros last-16 exit to Denmark was his last game for his country.

Bale, 31, stated in May he had made a decision on his future but would not make it public until after the finals because it would ’cause chaos’.
When asked about his future, the 96-cap Real Madrid star walked away from a post-match interview in Amsterdam before the question was finished.
But later Bale said to Welsh TV channel S4C: “I want to continue to play.
“People ask stupid questions all the time, but obviously I love playing for Wales.
“I’ll play for Wales until the day that I stop playing football.”
Bale, who spent last season on loan at Tottenham and scored 16 goals, has one year remaining on his Real contract, worth an eye-watering £650,000-a-week.
If Bale does stick around then his next target will be to try and lead Wales to the World Cup for the first time since 1958.
The Dragons have qualifiers against Belarus and Estonia in September after a win over the Czech Republic and a loss to Belgium in their opening two Group E matches.

But Robert Page’s side will have to pick up the pieces following the drubbing by the Danes in the Dutch capital which was Wales’ heaviest defeat in a competitive game since September 2012.
Bale added: “We’ve just started the World Cup campaign. We were just saying in the dressing room now, we need to take this experience into that.
“I feel like we have a very good way of playing when we play well and we need to keep that confidence high, keep playing football and I think we can qualify for the next World Cup.”

Pepe FUMES at Rui Patricio after keeper ignored Cristiano Ronaldo’s and his advice that Benzema would hit penalty left

PORTUGAL centre-back Pepe was left fuming after keeper Rui Patricio refused to listen when he told him where Karim Benzema was going to place his penalty. The France striker, who was a long-time team-mate of both Pepe and Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid, tucked his penalty away into the bottom left corner.
Ronaldo had a word with his keeper before Benzema took the penaltyCredit: Getty
But that was before Pepe could be seen gesticulating to Patricio from behind Benzema’s back, telling him to dive in the exact spot where the forward ended up putting the ball.
Ronaldo could also be seen speaking with his keeper before Benzema stepped up.
Yet the 33-year-old shot-stopper refused to take the advice of his fellow countryman and went on to dive the wrong way.
Benzema’s spot kick was the second of three penalties on the night as Ronaldo dispatched two for Portugal to take his tally at Euro 2020 to five goals.
France conceded the first pen after Spurs captain Hugo Lloris caught Danilo Pereira in the head attempting to clear the ball from a corner.
And speaking at halftime, BBC pundits Alan Shearer and Rio Ferdinand both felt it was a stonewall spot-kick.
Shearer said: “I think it’s a pen. Lloris has mistimed coming out and whacked him in the face”, while Rio added: “That’s GBH”.
Manchester United icon Ferdinand then agreed with his former teammate Frank Lampard that ‘keepers have been given leeway for years’.

Pepe shouted at Patricio for not listening to him after Benzema scored the penalty
Ferdinand said: “Goalkeepers are a protected species aren’t they. It was dangerous, reckless and I’m pleased it was given.”
However, the 42-year-old couldn’t say the same for France’s penalty after Nelson Semedo was penalised for body checking Kylian Mbappe.
Karim Benzema stepped up to convert but asked for his thoughts, Ferdinand added: “This is a terrible decision.
“I don’t think there’s any doubt in any of our minds. It’s good defending from Semedo, I’ve been critical of him. That’s not a penalty for me.”
Referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz – who officiated the Champions League final – ultimately gave a third penalty after the break.
Jules Kounde was adjudged to have handled the ball and Ronaldo bagged his second of the night to rescue a 2-2 draw with France.
The clash was the first time in Euros history that three penalties had been awarded in one game.

Wayne Rooney demands Jack Grealish is dropped as Man Utd legend picks ultra-defensive England team to face Germany

WAYNE ROONEY believes Gareth Southgate must change England’s shape against Germany – and sacrifice Jack Grealish in doing so. Southgate has switched between a 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 so far in the delayed European Championship.

Last Tuesday, he deployed the latter with ultra-popular Grealish helping England to a 1-0 win over Czech Republic as he played in the No10 role.
But Manchester United legend Rooney, currently managing Derby, would prefer a three-man central midfield, with pacey wingers next to Harry Kane.
It would mean Grealish is dropped, with Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling providing speed out wide.
Rooney, 35, wrote in his column with The Times: “After all my championing of Jack Grealish, I wouldn’t play him from the start against Germany.
“He was one of England’s better players against the Czech Republic and it is not that my opinion of him has changed.
“My thinking is entirely down to how the Germans play. Different opponents demand different approaches and Tuesday’s game is tailor-made for Marcus Rashford — but not Jack.
“Germany play three at the back with a high line and what they try to do is almost suffocate you.
“They pass side to side, get the ball in wide areas, come back and go all the way out to the other flank, then get balls into the penalty area.

“And when you win it, they want you to play a pass to feet because that means — with their line pushed right up — they can go and press you high up the pitch.
“The more players you have who want to take the ball to feet, the more they can press, so instead of Jack I’d be looking to have runners either side of Harry Kane.
“My instruction would be to attack the spaces behind their wing backs when they go forward and make runs down the channels to the sides of their centre backs — especially given Mats Hummels’s problems against pace.”

Sterling’s winner against Czech Republic was his 14th in 19 England games, making him a favourite to start.
But Bukayo Saka put in a man of the match performance, while Jadon Sancho got his first piece of action having come off the bench.
Rooney, England’s all-time top goal scorer, cannot split the trio, meaning he would be happy to see any one of them start.
He explained: “Rashford is ideal for the job and one of Raheem Sterling, Bukayo Saka or Jadon Sancho would complete my forward line.
“Raheem has been in brilliant form and Saka impressed against the Czechs, while Sancho knows the German players the best, so I don’t think you could lose with whichever option you chose.
Wayne Rooney would leave Jack Grealish out against GermanyCredit: AFP
“Germany had 62 per cent possession against France, 58 per cent against Portugal and 75 per cent against Hungary, and they should have a bigger share of the ball than England.
“Their centre backs will push to the halfway line. The first thought when England win it should be to play into the channels and have Rashford, and Sterling/Saka/Sancho going in behind.
“Having runners will get England up the pitch and take Germany’s counterpress away.”
Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips have been Southgate’s midfield pairing so far, with Mason Mount playing further afield.
But with Mount potentially ruled out having trained on his own due to his coronavirus isolation, Rooney would give a fit Jordan Henderson the nod.
The Liverpool captain came on against Czech Republic, but still faces question marks over his fitness.
Rooney said: “I would go with a midfield three, rather than a two, plus a No 10, which was Grealish’s role against the Czechs.
“It’s important not to be outnumbered in the middle because Joachim Low has forward players who drop back in, like Thomas Müller and Kai Havertz, and Joshua Kimmich, who comes in from right wing back to centre midfield.
Jordan Henderson has question marks over his fitnessCredit: PA
“Provided Jordan Henderson is fit I’d start him alongside Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips but Henderson has to be 100 per cent.
“In a game of this size, where Germany will keep the ball and make you run, you will suffer if you’re not completely there physically.
“I’d use Jude Bellingham instead if there is the slightest doubt about Henderson.”
Rooney, who captained England from 2014–2017, would also keep an unchanged backline of Luke Shaw, John Stones, Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker.
And it also allows for impact off the bench with playmakers Grealish and Phil Foden overlooked.
Rooney added: “That extra man in midfield would help Gareth Southgate to start the game solidly, feel how it’s going and maybe look to make the difference by introducing the quality of Grealish or Phil Foden from the bench.
“Against Germany you have to be cautious.”

England line up bid to host 2030 World Cup and European Super League farce could help bring it home

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham believes that the European Super League farce could help England secure hosting the World Cup in 2030.The 50-year-old footie supremo is hoping Uefa back England and Ireland’s submission to bring the game’s biggest competition home for the first time since 1966.

And with Spain and Portugal looking to co-host the tournament, Bullingham is hoping Uefa fails to back their proposal.
All six English clubs involved in the European Super League proposal pulled out following fan pressure.
And they all agreed to massive fines from Uefa should they be involved in another future plot.
Meanwhile Real Madrid and Barcelona are yet to withdraw from the hated competition.
Uefa may have halted disciplinary proceedings into the clubs, but Bullingham is hoping their poor relations prove to be a stumbling block over a World Cup held on the Iberian Peninsula.
England on the other hand boast good relations with Uefa following the government’s decision to allow 60,000 fans to attend the Euro 2020 semi-finals and final at Wembley.
Uefa will back only one European bid with its 55 member-nation votes and the FA is overseeing a feasibility study about whether to throw its hat in the ring.
Confirming England’s bid, Bullingham said: “I think we have got lots of credit from lots of different parts of football from around the world for the way in which the European Super League ended.

“And that’s great and we were a key part of that and we’re proud of the role we played.
“I think overall our relationship with Uefa, not just from from a Government point of view, but from an FA point of view is massively important.”
Before adding: “We’re doing a feasibility study at the moment to ascertain what would a bid look like, what’s the governance of it and, fundamentally, can we win it?
“I think our fundamental question is can we win it, have we got a genuine chance?
“I think all of us would like to host a World Cup here. It would have a massive impact on everything we’re trying to achieve, from grassroots participation to impact on our own finances.
“It would be great. But we’re only going to bid if we can win.”

“That is not the reason the players are doing it. We are supporting each other.”

“That’s the message we’ve given out. We’re all in it together and there were no issues.”
    Belgium
Belgium are the only non-British team to announce they will take the knee throughout Euro 2020.

The Hungarian FA were the first association to confirm they would not take the knee at Euro 2020.
In a statement they said they view the knee as a political gesture in defiance of Uefa and Fifa rules.
It read: “The basic values of the sport are equal opportunities, respect for the teammate and the opponent.
“Football may have become the most popular sport in the world because it belongs to everyone.
“The Hungarian national team not only follows the international rules and norms in all cases, but also pays tribute to everyone – be it an opponent, a fan or anyone else.
“MLSZ has been fighting all forms of hatred for years as part of the ‘Hate is not a track’ campaign.
“The rules of UEFA and FIFA do not allow politicization on the pitch and in the stadium either, which the MLSZ not only accepts but also agrees with.
“The national team will not express its condemnation of any form of hatred by kneeling before the matches.”
During their warm-up game against Ireland, Hungary pointed to the Uefa Respect logo on the sleeves of their shirts while the Irish team took the knee and were booed by a sizeable portion of the 15,000 crowd.
The gesture is thought to be hugely unpopular with a core group of Hungarian supporters, who marched to the Puskas Arena before Hungary’s game against France with an anti-kneeling banner.

Les Bleus were criticised in some sections of the French media after kneeling against the Welsh.
And captain Hugo Lloris said after the opening game against Germany: “It was a collective decision.
“We assume that if we have to do it, all the nations must do it with the support of UEFA.
“This is the case in Premier League, where the movement is united. In this competition, it is less the case.
“This does not mean that we do not support the cause, we especially do not want racism in our sport and in society.”
Another France player said anonymously: “The truth is that players were concerned about the fierce reaction to the gesture, and felt that it was dividing more than uniting.”
It is not known whether France will take the knee if the opposition does.
    Germany
Bundesliga players took the knee after the murder of George Floyd last season.
However, the national team have not been kneeling in 2021.
It is not known whether they will take the knee when England perform the gesture in their last 16 game.
Nevertheless, politics and football resolutely DO mix in Germany.
Like Holland, the German team has been active in demonstrating for better conditions for migrant workers in Qatar.
And during Germany’s match with Hungary, the Mayor of Munich saw his request to light the Allianz Arena in rainbow colours rejected by Uefa on grounds of potential politicisation of football.
However, thousands of Germany fans responded by attending the game wearing rainbow flags while captain Manuel Neuer wore a rainbow armband.
And midfielder Leon Goretzka celebrated by making a heart gesture in front of the Hungarian fans after equalising in the 2-2 draw.
Which teams are taking the knee in some Euro 2020 games?

Scotland have made their decision ahead of their opener against Czech Republic
Scotland stars originally said they would NOT be taking a knee prior to their Euro 2020 matches.
The Scottish FA confirmed they will continue to promote an anti-racist message by standing before matches.
But just a day later, they decided to do so in their match against England only.
Scotland skipper Andy Robertson said: “It is important we continue to tackle the issue of racism and raise awareness of the need to change people’s mindsets but also their behaviours.
“Prior to our World Cup qualifiers in March we spoke as a group and felt that taking a stand was the best way for us to show solidarity and also to reinforce the need for meaningful change in society.”
As per their announcement, Scotland did not kneel against the Czech Republic and Croatia at Hampden but did against England at Wembley.

    Italy
Italy were not thought to be taking the knee in any of their Euro 2020 games.
In their opening two matches against Switzerland and Turkey, neither team performed the gesture.
And when Wales took the knee in Rome, the Italians initially kicked off the match as normal.
However once the referee called them back, five players did take the knee – Rafael Toloi, Federico Bernardeschi, Emerson Palmieri, Andrea Bellotti and Matteo Pessina.
Following that confusion, vice-captain Leonardo Bonucci said Italy would in future take the knee if the opposition choose to do so.
He commented: “If in fact the opponents were to choose to kneel in that case the team would do the same, kneel, out of respect for the sensitivity of the opponents.
“This is where the group chose a line.
“After all, it could happen very soon: if all goes well, already in the quarterfinals he could meet Lukaku’s Belgium, which has made its own flag with messages against racism.
“Belgium would kneel and Italy would follow them. Without taking a position of its own, but sharing that of whoever they will face.”
    Turkey
Turkey did not take the knee in their opening match against Italy or their third game against Switzerland but did in their second game against Wales.
    Switzerland
Switzerland did take the knee in their opening Euro 2020 game against Wales but did not in their second game against Italy or their third game against Turkey.
    Finland
Finland did not take the knee in their first two Euro 2020 games against Denmark and Russia, but did in their third game against Belgium. More
