But the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was frustrated on the night as Thorgan Hazard’s wondergoal earned a 1-0 win to send Roberto Martinez’s side through to the quarters.
So desperate was Ronaldo, 36, to claim the accolade, he chased every single ball from the get-go.
But he ended up being left red-faced just before the end of the first half as he tried to close down Courtois.
The speedster looked to force a mistake out of the Real Madrid stopper by putting him under pressure.
But the cool, calm and collected Courtois effortlessly knocked the ball past the Portuguese legend to maintain possession.
And fans watching the game across the world ended up having a field day.
One said: “Courtois sending Ronaldo back to Turin.”

Keane aimed a cheeky dig at Arsenal when praising Saka
Manchester United icon Keane agreed “he’s been playing well”, before adding “… in a poor Arsenal team.”
Mikel Arteta’s side finished eighth in the Premier League and perhaps the most disappointing moment came in the Europa League semi-final exit to Villareal.
And despite their problems Saka still shone, scoring seven and assisting ten goals in all competitions.
It was just his second full season as a professional and yet he was named Arsenal’s player of the year, and was also nominated for the PFA’s Young Player of the Season award.
He took that form into the match against Czech Republic on Tuesday, impressing in England’s 1-0 win.
Keane’s comments led one Arsenal fan to fume on social media, tweeting: “No matter what situation, Roy Keane will always have a dig at us”, along with an eye-roll emoji.

Nigel de Jong an emotional wreck on ITV watching Holland loss to Czechs at Euro 2020 and shouts ‘what am I seeing?!’

NIGEL DE JONG embodied all Holland fans as he watched in agony during his side’s Euro 2020 exit at the hands of the Czech Republic.A 2-0 defeat in Budapest sent Frank de Boer’s Dutch team sent home at the last-16 stage, following Matthijs de Ligt’s red card.
Nigel de Jong’s emotion was plain to see as Holland crashed out to the Czech Republic
Former Manchester City midfielder De Jong, who won 81 caps for his country, watched the game while working as a pundit for ITV.
After the match, presenter Mark Pougatch directed him towards a montage of the 36-year-old’s reactions to the dramatic second-half.
De Jong admitted ‘I was very hopeful’ and laughed as the clip showed him with his head in his hands, crying out: “Oh my God!”
At De Ligt’s red card, he responded: “Oh my God, it’s a red. No way, what am I seeing?!”
Viewers praised De Jong for his analysis and authenticity having seen his country crash out of the competition.
One Twitter user wrote online: “Feel for Nigel de Jong, looks really upset after Netherlands loss but been one of the best pundits today, should be on more regularly.”
Jaja commented: “Nigel De Jong watching that Netherlands display is a mood…”
Phil added: “Hope ITV keep Nigel de Jong for the rest of the Euros. He was obviously gutted with that result/performance but he was 100 per cent right with his analysis.”
BETTING SPECIAL: GET ENGLAND TO BEAT GERMANY AT 14/1

Glen said: “Nigel De Jong good value in the studio. He’d have two footed someone when they went down to 10.”
And another tweeted: “Nigel De Jong should’ve smashed up the studio.”
Tomas Holes put Czech Republic ahead on 68 minutes after De Ligt was dismissed for handball and Patrik Schick wrapped up the win late on.
The post-mortem has already begun in Holland and De Jong gave his initial take on coach De Boer’s setup.

He said: “We had the players on the pitch to change the system to a 4-2-3 or 4-4-1 but still played with five defenders at the back.
“It looked like De Boer was defending the 0-0 as long as possible. At the end of the day, there was no belief after the red.
“There was a lack of belief, a lack of intensity, a lack of character. We really missed a leader out there.”

In fact, his signing was one of those that sparked the Premier League revolution, making it one the international powerhouse league we know today.
He also managed the Blues, as well as Watford in his only two managerial appointments.
But the affable bearded ace has had a tough time in his personal life, where he has been battling cancer.
When was Gianluca Vialli’s ill and what was the diagnosis?

Vialli, 56, revealed in November 2018 he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
He underwent chemotherapy and about 18 months later announced he was all clear of the disease.
Honest Vialli told RAI 1: “I cannot fight with cancer because I would not be able to win this battle, it is a much stronger opponent than me.
“Cancer is an unwanted travel companion, but I can’t help it.
“It got on the train with me and I have to go ahead (and) travel with my head down, never giving up, hoping that one day this unwanted guest will get tired and leave peacefully for many years because there are still so many things I want to do in this life.
“I realise that people can look at me, see that I am doing alright, and hope that they might do the same.
“Maybe because I was a footballer and a strong man, but also fragile and vulnerable at the same time, so I think someone may have recognised themselves in this.
“I’m here with all my faults and my many fears, but also with the desire to do something important.”

What is his role with the Italy team at Euro 2020?
Vialli has been friends with Azzurri manager Roberto Mancini since their time together at Sampdoria.
After his cancer diagnosis, former Manchester City boss Mancini offered Vialli the chance to join up with the national team as their chief delegation officer.
Also part of Mancini’s coaching team is former Juventus and Crystal Palace star Attilio Lombardo.
Chelsea fans were delighted to see Vialli celebrating wildly at Wembley during Italy’s extra-time win over Austria at Euro 2020. More

Gareth Southgate reveals England have been practising penalties to face Germany for a LONG time and before Euro 2020

GARETH SOUTHGATE is relying on the penalty plan that broke England’s shootout curse ahead of facing Germany at Euro 2020.The Three Lions had won only one of their seven tournament shootouts before the former defender took charge.

And yet, as the man who infamously missed his kick against Germany at Euro 96, Southgate has pioneered back-to-back victories when spot-kicks were required.
Eric Dier fired home the winner in a dramatic last-16 win over Colombia at the 2018 World Cup.
Jordan Pickford was the hero in 2019’s Nations League third place play-off beating of Switzerland.
Southgate is going back to the same well as England prepare for the Euro 2020 knockouts.
He told ITV on Sunday evening: “We’ve obviously won our last two penalty shootouts.
“So we have a process that works for us through that preparation and we’ve followed that same process.
“There’s a little bit more focus on it this week but we don’t start it this week as that would be too late, and also we didn’t want to make a bigger thing of it than it is.
“We created a process that works for us, we think the players understand that and we’ll be well prepared if it comes to that moment.”

Much has been made of the history between England and Germany as well as the Three Lions’ historic tournament strife ahead of the game.
But Southgate insists that is for the fans with his young squad focused on writing their own, successful, chapter into football history.
The manager added: “I don’t need to demystify it, the history is an irrelevance for them.
“We’ve got boys born into the 2000s – which is scary for us but the reality of the team!
“It’s of no consequence to them what we did with Peter Bonetti in 1970 or what happened in 1990, and so on.
“Of course they were watching that stuff and getting a bit of an understanding of it but it’s not something we’re speaking to them about.

“This team have put down lots of historic performances in the last couple of years and made their own history, their own stories.
“This is how they should view this game – we’ve only won one knockout match in the European Championship as a country.
“So they’ve got a great chance to go and be the first team since 1996 to do that.”

Matthijs De Ligt sent off for clear handball as last man in first VAR overrule as Holland crash out of Euro 2020

Commanding centre-half De Ligt was originally shown a yellow card by referee Sergey Karasev for handball just outside the penalty area.
But Karasev was then instructed by VAR Stuart Atwell to check the pitch-side monitor to decide whether De Ligt was denying Patrik Schick a clear goalscoring opportunity.
And the referee decided he WAS – and upgraded the yellow to a red.
Some on social media thought the decision was harsh as De Ligt was well off-balance as a result of his tussle with Schick.
But the majority believe it was the right decision.
One footie fan wrote on Twitter: “I think De Ligt turns badly and is falling over anyway, the opposition player does stumble over the back of him.”
But Liam Macca wrote: “What was De light thinking?”
Another wrote: “De Ligt literally falls over then slaps the ball away.”
Hunter Ayre was succinct in writing: “Lights off for De Ligt then.

“Simply awful defending and now putting his team-mates in a very thought spot.”
And just 13 minutes after being reduced to ten men, Holland were also a goal down.
Tomas Holes flashed a header past Maarten Stekelenburg to put the unfancied Czech’s 1-0 up, before star man Schick scored a second to set up a quarter-final clash with Denmark.

England have DREAM route to Euro 2020 final.. if Gareth Southgate’s men win last-16 blockbuster vs Germany

ENGLAND could now have a DREAM route to Wembley glory next month… if they survive their last-16 clash with Germany. And Holland’s shock defeat to the Czech Republic on Sunday has made it even better.

Gareth Southgate led the Three Lions to victories over Croatia and the Czechs, with a hard-fought draw over Scotland sandwiched in between.
And results elsewhere seem to have presented England with their best chance yet to win a first major tournament since the 1966 World Cup.
England finished top of Group D after Tuesday night’s win at Wembley.
As a result, they face the unenviable challenge of taking on the runners-up in the feared Group F.
On a rollercoaster night of action, England looked set to face each of France, Portugal, Germany and Hungary at different stages.
But come full-time it is, somewhat inevitably, a clash with our old enemies the Germans awaiting Southgate’s Lions.

That blockbuster takes place on Tuesday at Wembley, kicking off at 5pm.
If England can break with tradition and win, they will play their quarter-final clash against either Sweden, who surprisingly pipped Spain to top spot in Group E, or 3rd-place qualifiers Ukraine.
England beat the Swedes at the same stage in the last World Cup, as Harry Maguire and Dele Alli netted in a 2-0 win.
That clash would take place on July 3, with kick-off in Rome at 8pm.

In the semis, England are now in line to face either Wales’ conquerors Denmark or the Czechs again, after they stunned remaining ‘giant’ in the Three Lions’ half, Holland, on Sunday.
That leaves favourites France in the other half of the draw, along with giants Portugal, Belgium, Italy and Spain.
If all goes well, England could be facing one of them at the end of the glorious summer, in the final at Wembley on July 11.
