Ministers ‘want independent review’ over scenes of chaos at Wembley during Euro 2020 final as emergency talks held

MINISTERS are calling for an independent body to take over the FA’s investigation into last week’s chaos at Wembley in light of corruption allegations.Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden has already called in Mark Bullingham, the FA’s Chief Executive, for crisis talks after reports emerged hooligans bribed matchday officials to let them in during last weekend’s Euro 2020 final.

The FA has promised a thorough investigation, but Westminster says an independent body should be in chargeCredit: Getty
The minister was forced into action following a Times probe that found multiple security breaches and stewards being paid thousands to let ticketless fans in.
This comes as a row heats up over the UK’s ability to host the 2030 World Cup after thousands of ticketless fans bulldozed through security barriers and personnel during the England-Italy final last Sunday.
The Times’ investigation found six breaches of disabled entrance and exit doors and says it has evidence of more.
There are also claims security were pocketing thousands of pounds to open emergency exit.
The hooligans are reported to have assaulted Italy fans, smuggled in cocaine, and continued their streak of violence long after the match finished.
Trust between Westminster and the footballing body has gotten so frayed that Dowden ordered Bullingham in for emergency talks last Monday.
Dowden wants the FA to hand over control of its investigation of the incident to an independent body, but stopped short of ordering a fully independent inquiry.
One inside source told The Times: “Ministers were deeply concerned and want there to be thorough examination of the decisions made to ensure such shaming scenes are never repeated.
“They think someone independent should review what happened.”
The FA has promised to “carry out a full review and investigation” and highlighted staffing number were higher than what was required for the night.
It also hit out at “people who illegally forced their way into the stadium”.
    ‘WE’VE JIBBED WEMBEY BEFORE’
Some hooligans entered by tailgating ticket holders through turnstiles while others bribed security staff.
One hooligan, called Dominic, said corruption among matchday officials was so rampant that “jibbers” – people who cunningly acquire an item with the exchange of cash – were shopping around to get the best prices.
“We’ve jibbed Wembley before and thought because of the empty seats there would be no real issue.”
“It’s well known that Wembley is probably the easiest jib in the business,” he continued.
He and a friend were set to pay a steward £150 each to enter but decided to rush through with the crowds instead.
“We approached a few [stewards] outside the ground and one or two came up to us but they wanted too much,” he told The Times.
He said ticketless fans were thrown out of disabled entrances by stewards only to be “left to try [it] again”.
Two 18-year-old stewards from east London have so far been arrested after allegedly advertising their passes on Facebook.
They have both been released under investigation.
Ten men are wanted by police in connection with the chaos caused at Wembley Stadium last SundayCredit: PA
This comes as cops released pictures of ten men wanted in connection to the storming of the stadium.
The Met Police issued an appeal for help identifying “those who we think have questions to answer”.
An estimated 5,000 ticketless thugs barged and blagged their way into Wembley Stadium last Sunday in an attempt to watch the game between England and Italy.
Crowds of people were filmed streaming up Wembley’s outer stairwells ahead of the match, which saw England defeated 3-2 in an agonising penalty shootout.
The Met Police said in a statement that after the match “officers began the painstaking process of reviewing hundreds of hours of CCTV and body-worn video content from Wembley Stadium and other key locations”.

It added: “The meticulous investigation will continue to identify further people of interest or indeed other offences which may have occurred.”
Anyone who can identify the people in the released images is urged to contact the police.
Detective Sergeant Matt Simpson, from the Met’s Public Order Crime Team, said: “Following the scenes of disorder both at Wembley Stadium and in central London, we made a commitment that those responsible would face consequences. More

Man Utd fans hail ‘agent’ Luke Shaw over Declan Rice holiday bromance as England pals relax in Mykonos

MANCHESTER UNITED fans hailed ‘agent’ Luke Shaw after striking up a bromance with Declan Rice. The England pair are on holiday together in Mykonos after starring at Euro 2020.
Luke Shaw and Declan Rice have struck up a bromance over the summer
They have been letting their hair down on the Greek island in the week after their final heartbreak against Italy, going out for food and enjoying the swimming pool with ocean views.
Fellow England heroes Kyle Walker, Mason Mount, Ben Chilwell, Jack Grealish, Kalvin Philips and Ben White are there too – as is snooker hero Judd Trump.
The Manchester City right-back was filmed belting out a rendition of Sweet Caroline as they dined out at a restaurant.
But Red Devils supporters’ eyes were drawn to Shaw and Rice hanging out together – in the hope the left-back can convince the West Ham ace to join him at Old Trafford this summer.
After seeing the pair shine on the same side at the Euros, United fans will be dreaming of them doing the same under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
One said: “Agent Shaw working on Rice.”
Another wrote: “Need Shaw to do the fine work of taking Declan Rice aside and coming out the other side with his mind set on United.”
And a third added: “Agent Shaw. Keep on a Declan mate.”
Rice was linked with a transfer to United last year and has rejected two new contract offers at West Ham.

However, Chelsea are also monitoring his situation at the London Stadium.
The Blues could try and lure their former youth-team player back to the club after releasing him at 14. – but would likely need to stump up at least £80million.
Mount and Rice are best mates so would not doubt relish the chance to play together in the Premier League as well as the Champions League.

Wembley stewards arrested after ‘attempting to flog passes to England’s Euro final for £4,500’

TWO Wembley stewards have been arrested after allegedly attempting to sell passes to England’s Euro final for £4,500.The passes were offered, along with high-vis bibs and wristbands, on a Facebook site titled UEFA Face Value Tickets Swap and Sell.
Trouble brews outside the stadium as fans gather ahead of the Euro 2020 finalCredit: Reuters
Snaps show off the stewards’ view of the pitch during the Denmark semi-final
One of the stewards’ hi-vis bib that was part of the package allegedly being sold off by the stadium workers
But the buyer they met was a Sun on Sunday investigator posing as a fan desperate for tickets.
And the would-be sellers were held in a sting operation after we alerted police.
The stewards could have unwittingly given access to terrorists targeting England’s biggest game since 1966.
And the scandal laid bare the appalling state of the matchday security operation which led to 2,500 yobs storming the stadium amid frightening scenes.
Meanwhile, an MP demanded action as a second Sun on Sunday investigation uncovered a 40 per cent cut in the Wembley policing bill over just two years.
And, although stadium owner The FA is likely to have earned more than £1million for each of the seven Euros games it hosted, private stewards were paid as little as £8.90 an hour.
We were offered the passes after would-be sellers quit their posts in the stadium hours before the kick-off against Italy.
A pass that gave entry to Wembley Stadium was offered to our undercover investigator
The package of pass, wristband and hi-vis bib was allegedly offered for a combined price of £4,500
The initial advert had said: “Steward pass available x2 with uniform and pass. Anyone wants to get in I have 2 passes and 2 uniforms and wristbands for you to go in and watch the game.”
Facebook messages were then sent explaining how to assume their identities, along with pictures of a security pass on a lanyard, a white matchday wristband and the yellow bibs. Images were also posted showing a steward with a prime view at England’s semi-final win over Denmark.
Asked what to do about the picture on the pass,   the would-be vendor added: “You can print a photo and stick it on.
“They don’t check like that. It’s not as secure as you think.”
They added: “As long as you got the wristband and pass you’re sorted. Everywhere in the stadium and stands. You can go to the toilet, take it off and go and sit somewhere. All you have to do is show your wristband to two people. Not even the pass. When you get in that’s it. Job done.”
The pair were held by six officers as they waited to complete the deal outside a supermarket near the stadium. They were arrested on suspicion of fraud, handcuffed and led to a police van. Our investigator has now given a statement to police.
Police confirmed: “Two men were taken to a West London police station and have since been released under investigation.”
Last night, a spokesman for the FA  said: “We are aware of the matter and we are supporting the police with their investigation. We are not in a position to comment further at this time.”
Just before kick-off touts were demanding up to £62,500 for a pair of tickets.
But European football chiefs reckon as many as 5,000 ticketless yobs may have got into the stadium. One, Charlie Perry, told how he bribed his way in for £250.
Videos showed innocent fans being trampled in stampedes, with England hero Harry Maguire’s dad suffering suspected broken ribs.
Figures obtained by The Sun on Sunday show the FA paid just £203,388 for police officers inside the ground in 2018-2019, the last full season before lockdown. Yet they shelled out £337,431.78 in 2016-17, meaning the total fell by £134,043  or 40 per cent.

Police are also investigating how some fans made their way into the stadium without ticketsCredit: Reuters
And last night Tory MP Julian Knight — chair of the powerful Commons Culture, Media and Sport select committee — urged ministers to “bang some heads together”.
He said: “The events of last weekend could quite easily have ended in tragedy. When it comes to such events the authorities must spend whatever is required to make sure fans are safe and maintain public order.”
As few as 20 officers were inside Wembley when yobs forced their way in. Ken Marsh, chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation staff association, said: “This shambles was caused by penny-pinching on behalf of Wembley and the FA.
“They have made tens of millions from this tournament yet don’t want to pay for policing. If you think private security firms can do as good a job as the police — well, you can see how it unfolded.
“There has been an erosion of investment into policing at football going back many years, which we have warned about. We are lucky there were not deaths or a terrorist attack.”
A Wembley spokesman said: “We will carry out a full review and investigation into the events. This will be done in collaboration with the police, the Greater London Authority, the Safety Advisory Group and the tournament delivery stakeholders.”
England lost the final in a penalty shootout after Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka missed their spotkicks — sparking a barrage of online racism.

Last night it emerged Prince William, who commiserated with the England team in their dressing room, has since sent private messages to the trio.
A source said William was “sickened” by the “unacceptable and abhorrent” abuse.
The Prince, president of the FA, has also been liaising with football chiefs about putting pressure on social media giants. He said last week: “All those involved should be held accountable.”

Donnarumma’s penalty kick heroics saw him named Player of the Tournament – the first goalkeeper to receive the award.
Fellow Italians Jorginho and Federico Chiesa wouldn’t have been too far behind in the running for the individual accolade.
The former AC Milan keeper – who made his professional debut at 16 – wanted some new ink to celebrate his first and most likely not his last international trophy.
The tat of the trophy is located on the shot stoppers left arm.
And Donnarumma showcased his new ink on his Instagram story to the 3.2million who follow him.
Donnarumma will now embark on a new journey at club level.
He will now play his trade in the French Capital, Paris, for Ligue 1 powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain – joining on a free transfer.

ITALY defender Leonardo Bonucci has trolled England again, this time taking to Instagram to pose with a bowl of pasta alongside his pal and centre-back partner Giorgio Chiellini. The 34-year-old Juventus star played a key role for Italy in the Euro 2020 final win against England at Wembley, scoring the equaliser in the 67th minute to cancel out Luke Shaw’s early opener.

And the stellar centre-back stepped up in the nail-biting penalty shootout and picked out the top-left corner.
Bukayo Saka stepped up last for England and saw his penalty saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma – crowning Italy European champions.
Bonucci – in the manic celebrations in the aftermath of the penalty shootout – grabbed the camera and declared ‘it’s coming to Rome’, digging at at England’s adopted anthem Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home).
And in his post-match press conference, Bonucci guzzled down a bottle of beer and Coca Cola and fired another shot back at English fans for mocking Italian cuisine.
Bonucci said: “You all still have to eat a lot of pasta!”
And now, Bonucci has posed alongside Chiellini with a bowl of pasta as the pair enjoy the sun after their historic victory.
Bonucci captioned the Instagram post: “We keep eating pasta … and you?”

Speaking after the win at Wembley, Bonucci said: “I’ll convince him we are going on holiday together, so I will convince him no worries.”
Chiellini is set to sign a new one-year deal at Juventus which would only keep him at the club until the summer of 2022, and it is unclear whether he will shelve any retirement plans to lead the Azzurri into Qatar.

Italy fan gets Giorgio Chiellini’s cynical tug on Bukayo Saka tattooed on his arm after Euro 2020 triumph

AN ITALIAN superfan has got Giorgio Chiellini’s cynical tug tattooed on his arm following their Euro 2020 triumph. The veteran centre-back famously took a yellow card when he yanked back Bukayo Saka in last Sunday’s final.
One superfan opted to get Giorgio Chiellini’s foul on Bukayo Saka tattooed on his arm
Arsenal teenager Saka was looking to break clear in injury time with the score tied at 1-1 after Chiellini misjudged the flight of the ball.
However, the cunning defender guaranteed his opponent did not get away by grabbing the neck of his jersey and hauling him down.
England fans raged at the tactics and wanted to see a different colour card.
And after Italy went on to lift the trophy following the penalty shootout win, one supporter opted to get Chiellini’s challenge permanently inked on his skin – such was the magnitude of the moment.
The tatt shows the incident with the European Championships trophy – complete with red, white and green ribbons – just out of Saka’s grasp.
To make matters worse for Saka and England, Chiellini then claimed to put a curse on the winger in the shootout.
Saka saw his decisive spot-kick saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma after the defender uttered the word ‘kiricocho’ from the halfway line.

Daniel Sturridge is now England’s forgotten man as a free agent having last played a club match 17 MONTHS ago

DANIEL STURRIDGE still had the world at his feet back in 2016 — despite being part of England’s shameful Euros exit. The striker, who had scored in the Europa League final for Liverpool a few weeks earlier, was expected to push on at Anfield under Jurgen Klopp.
Daniel Sturridge was enjoying his best football at the time of the last Euros in 2016Credit: Getty
But today Sturridge is a free agent and training with Real Mallorca having last played a match 17 MONTHS ago.
The former Chelsea forward, now 31, claims he is training every day with his team of fitness coaches and is determined to make a comeback.
Maybe there will be a club who will benefit from a player with great natural talent even though, at times, he has not always been prepared to put his body on the line.
Sturridge is not the only one of Roy Hodgson’s squad in France who, after a humiliating 2-1 loss to Iceland in the last 16, saw their careers go backwards.
In Sturridge’s case, his last game came on February 22, 2020, for Trabzonspor in a 2-2 draw with Besiktas in Turkey.
But the foolish decision to advise his brother to bet on him potentially moving to Sevilla cost him.
Sturridge was banned for four months for breaching betting rules and saw his Trabzonspor contract ripped up.
Since then, he has spent a fair amount of time in Los Angeles, where his dog was stolen before being returned after an appeal to the public.

But his current, clubless plight is a far cry from 2016.
He went into the Euros on the back of scoring in Liverpool’s 3-1 Europa League final loss to Sevilla — his 13th goal of the season.
And he scored a 91st-minute winner as England beat Wales 2-1 for their first victory although disaster struck with that embarrassing defeat against Iceland in Nice.
Sturridge’s 26th and final England game was a 1-0 win over Lithuania in October 2017, a match which saw debuts for Harry Maguire and Harry Winks.
During that time under Gareth Southgate, the changes within the squad have been remarkable.
Southgate will name his 26-man squad for the Euros today and there will be only six survivors from France — John Stones, Kyle Walker, Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford.
It is easy to forget that the captain for Hodgson at Euro 2016 was Wayne Rooney.
Rooney is still saddened by the decision of Jamie Vardy to quit international football after the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The Derby boss said: “He may be 34 but Jamie is still a brilliant player, who was involved in 24 goals in the Premier League this season.
“He would have been a great asset — not only as an impact substitute but also as a potential starter.”
Sturridge, for sure, could learn a thing or two from Vardy about attitude and commitment.
